I found the cause of the annoyance. For some reason, the virtual
keyboard (Onboard) is automatically set, probably by gnome-accesibility,

Drive is OK. Plays Audio CDs just fine. Installed Ubuntu from it no problem.

Expected DVD to play.
Instead it tried to play but just spat out bits of soundtrack and corrupted
video.

I tried a lot of configurations, at least I really left enough space left
and right of the notification area. whatever I did did not make the skype
icon larger that 1 px (restarting skype for every try).
