I assume this is caused by the user defined startup application.
I disabled the login-sound via System - Administration -Login Screen,
but the sound still plays at login.
After disabling / unchecking the 'Gnome Login Sound' System -
Preferences - Startup Applications, the sound doesn't play at
I just now solved the problem on a rather recent install of Hardy by
replacing the login.wav file with a silent login.wav of the same length.

I have chosen No sound theme in System - Preferences - Sounds and I still
get a drum sound before login prompt.

Sorry to waste your time, but that's a different issue. Ubuntu has
played that drum sound at the gdm prompt since at least 5.10,
independent of the sound settings. I don't know how to disable it,
because it's the only startup sound that didn't bother me (It's very
short and sort of unintrusive, in

Unfortunately between hardy and intrepid, gconf settings definitions
changed, due to a change in the sound events mechanism for GNOME 2.24.
Unfortunately users will have to adjust their settings acconrdingly.

sound when disabled is the same one I get when it is disabled. It does
not always play when disabled, but it often does. I'm thinking about
putting a dummy custom sound in that doesn't make any sound instead.

I've finally solved this issue, it seems that it is somehow connected to the
gnome window manager being set to metacity.
I was able to customize the sound effects by deleting this folder:
~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager
then logging out and back in again and now everything
there is a problem a sound bank ubuntu... but thanks for support bye bye

By default it seems that the sounds from the Ubuntu theme are missing
(nothing plays to start with), however selecting a custom sound, and
then disabling the login sound causes sound to be played every time,
regardless of if it's been disabled or not.

I also have this issue and another one as well: the very quick drum

I posted a duplicate of this bug yesterday in which I pointed out
another strange behaviour: If you disable the login sound, you can't
play the preview ('play' icon) of the other sounds anymore.

I can confirm this behavior with Intrepid, clean install (everyone that
reported seems to have upgraded from Hardy).
One detail is that I have enable automatic login, and the login sound
plays even if disabled, but if I logout and login again, the sound does
not play.

I can confirm this too, just upgraded from 8.04 , setting it to disabled or
custom will not change the intro sound.
I made a new user to test if this happens with him and it doesn't, instead
