I assume this is caused by the user defined startup application. I disabled the login-sound via System - Administration -Login Screen, but the sound still plays at login. After disabling / unchecking the 'Gnome Login Sound' System - Preferences - Startup Applications, the sound doesn't play at

I've finally solved this issue, it seems that it is somehow connected to the gnome window manager being set to metacity. I was able to customize the sound effects by deleting this folder: ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager then logging out and back in again and now everything
