[Bug 187547] Re: nautilus eat memory, locks desktop

2008-03-28 Thread logus
I confirm the original bugreport. Can easily reproduce it on current
installation (nautilus 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu1) by cutting-and-pasting some
files (esp. jpg images - no svg's in that folders!) around bunch of
directories. Nautilus began consuming more and more memory, while eating
about 80-90% cpu; if left up leads to fully inaccessible machine with
oom-killer traces in syslog. After pkill'ing nautilus process, all files
moved by last action in nautilus seem to be in their destination dir
(that is nautilus starts leaking after actual file move/copy
operations).

[Bug 158250] Re: user logs out in multiseat makes other seat lockup

2008-03-28 Thread luis
Yes, still an issue. I bought a not too new radeon X800 pci-e and I'm using the
open source radeon driver now. I though either the integrated controller or the
closed source fglrx drivers were part of the problem. I've read that evdev
breaks again the multiuser configuration in Hardy, and that's why I haven't
tried it yet. It was real pain to get evdev to work in Gutsy. And since this is
the computer that my family uses for everything, I can't have it down too long.
I guess that's why I choose Ubuntu in the first place.
I'll try Hardy on a different partition over the weekend.

[Bug 138343] Re: evince consumes a lot of memory (1.5 GB VM)

2008-03-28 Thread Schalken
I have recently been hit by this bug on Gutsy.

Opening http://www.foxkeh.com/downloads/history/history-foxkeh.pdf
resulted in 600MB memory usage in "Best Fit" zoom level (about 70%),
little did I know that trying to zoom in to 400% to get a closeup of one
of the images would result in Evince consuming all 1GB of my memory and
2.5GB of my swap, grinding my system to a halt to the point of me
needing to cut the power.

Yes. Ouch.

[Bug 14774] Re: [shares-admin] Shared folders requires a login

2008-03-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.

I believe this bug has been resolved for hardy, with the removal of
shares-admin from gnome-system-tools. The nautilus-share package which
replaces it supports both anonymous and authenticated shares.

The issue with home directories being shared by default was separately
resolved by way of the samba package in dapper.

Finally, the issue of needing to call smbpasswd separately in order to
access password-protected shares is now being tracked as a bug in the
pam package: bug #201291.

[Bug 84501] Re: Java6 Web Start just opens the Java control panel instead of running the application

2008-03-28 Thread James Stansell
If you install openjdk-6 (6b08-0ubuntu1) in hardy (and possibly icedtea-
gcjwebplugin) and use it instead of the sun-java6 is the problem fixed?
Recent updates in the openjdk package include:

  * Install a wrapper script for javaws, which calls `javaws -viewer' if no
arguments are given (or else starting javaws from the desktop menu
would not do anything).
  * debian/JB-web-start.applications.in: Remove the -viewer option from command.

It sounds like those address this bug, but in the open-source openjdk-6
package instead of the proprietary sun-java6 package. Getting Sun to
update sun-java6 can be problematic, but it should be helpful if we can
confirm that the problem was fixed in openjdk.

Nothing has been removed from the Preferred Applications capplet. If you
mean Removable Drives and Media, the functionality of the Media tab that
has been removed is now handled by Edit / Preferences / Media in
Nautilus, since Nautilus handles mounting now. You should use the
options in that tab to specify what should be done upon media mounting.

[Bug 208605] [NEW] gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in gdk_threads_dispatch()

2008-03-28 Thread Jesse Burt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 208523 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/208523

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

gnome-panel crashes when switching virtual desktops.
This bears *some* similarity to bug #207693 but I didn't think it was quite the
same thing (as it or any of the others I could find). It has been difficult for
me to reproduce consistently but it only happens when I use the hotkey
Ctrl-Alt-[Left|Right] to change virtual desktops. Another user in the
aforementioned bug report states they can reproduce the bug if the mouse cursor
is over the pager window when switching desktops; so far I cannot confirm this.
I am using the current compiz and emerald. In case any of it might be relevant,
my panel has firefox, thunderbird, pidgin, force-quit, and terminal launcher
buttons and the applets: sensors, emifreq cpu frequency scaler, network
monitor, three separators, user switcher, systray (containing pidgin), volume
levels, stock date & time, and logout. nm-applet also crashes or at least quits
every time the panel crashes.

This was also logged at the time:

[Bug 208598] [NEW] clicking 'set system time' sets the time one hour forward

2008-03-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Using the 'Adjust Date and Time' option, if I click on 'Set System
Time', when the dialog closes the system time is set one hour forward of
the time displayed. To set the clock correctly using this dialog, I
have to manually set the time to one hour in the past!

However, if I change my timezone to Europe/London (a timezone which is
not currently on DST), the system clock is correctly set to the same
value as is displayed in the dialog.

So it appears that the offset to UTC is calculated wrong when setting
the system clock, in the case where DST is in effect.

[Bug 208595] [NEW] nautilus fails on sftp (and other remote access protocols)

2008-03-28 Thread JeffV
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm using Hardy Heron Beta. I'm at most ever 12 hours out of sync with
the repositories. This bug has been around for at least the last week -
possibly before, but that's when I first tried Hardy Heron - just before
beta.

If I use gftp or command line ssh, I can visit and use remote
directories and files. If I try to do the same thing through Nautilus,
it fails.

To reproduce on my system with sftp:
Click Places, Connect to Server, Choose Custom Service type, enter the URI
sftp://somesftpserver.com/some/starting/directory.
Username/password dialog pops up.
Answer username and password, and choose to remember until logout.
Connection is made and initial directory is shown in a Nautilus window.
Double clicking on a folder to move into a subdirectory results in a long wait.
Eventually Nautilus responds with:

"Couldn't display "sftp://my-sftp-server.com/big/dom/homespace/www";.

Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of "www": DBus error
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message
bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken."

I've posted here with sftp because I've just had the bug again, but I'm
pretty sure that I've had the same problem doing the same thing using
the ssh option in Connect to Server. On the other hand: as I wrote this
report, I tried using teh ssh option, and I got in with no problems, and
was able to move around the directory structure without the error, so
this should be treated as hearsay.

Having followed my instructions above, I now have a network place
sftp://etc. Double clicking this allows me to open it with a little help
with paths. Clicking on a subdirectory results in a neverending wait.
This might be a different bug. A comparison of which processes were
running before and while experiencing the bug shows that the problem is
in process ssh - i.e. package openssh-client: /usr/bin/ssh .

2008-03-28 Thread René Brandenburger

After I get the issue in nautilus, gvfs-copy doesn't work either,

Error copying file /media/cdrom/LSR/photos/index.html: DBus error

causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message

For my part, I think it's a bug for a very simple reason - there's nothing
about the label on this button that implies that the settings will
immediately take effect based on the contents of the current window.
Indeed, the label I see is "Set System Time...", with trailing ellipsis
which to me *explicitly* suggests that clicking the button will open a new
dialog. I think there's insufficient indication here that clicking the
button will cause the currently-displayed settings to take effect.

[Bug 208365] Re: There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon (timeout?)

2008-03-28 Thread André Pirard
Here you are. The information you asked is at the end of xsession-errors.
Please note that I did find gnome-settings-daemon started.
And that if I kill it, it will restart automatically.
I found no better way than to "kill -9; gnome-settings-daemon"
First time I did this, my session was killed, maybe my mistake.
Later, I received a message saying that g-s-d had restarted too many times.
In the confusion, I forgot --debug :-(

Tell me if you find what you need.
Else, what exactly I must do to help.

Thanks too for the marvelous job you do.

[Bug 208535] Re: Hardy beta: gnome-display-properties allows switching off the only monitor

2008-03-28 Thread Gábor Szeder
Maybe something like this?

Don't allow switching off the only active monitor

Currently, users can choose "Off" from gnome-display-properties'
"Resolution" combo box and apply this change, even if they have only one
active monitor, leaving them without a working display.

With this patch the "Off" entry combo box is added to the "Resolution" combo
box only when the current output is not the only active output.

[Bug 208570] [NEW] strange graphics bug, window looks squished, wrong colors

2008-03-28 Thread Data
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

I see this strange graphics bug (see attached screenshot) in an up-to-
date installation of hardy beta. I should mention I am running it as a
virtual machine in Virtualbox, so this bug should not be hardware-
related, nor related to 3D-driver issues or something like that.

So far, gnome-system-monitor seems the only affected program from the default
installation.
However, I just discovered that I also see this bug in Gnome-do (See second

[Bug 208524] Re: Gvfs ftp module doesn't display file whose name is longer than 42 characters

2008-03-28 Thread Basilio Kublik
Hi Fabien
I can confirm this issue, i create a couple of files starting with one using 40
chars, other with 41, 42, 43 and 77 chars, this without considerate the file
extension as part of the name, and just the first 3 are shown using the gvfs
ftp backend, this does not apply to gvfs sftp nor another ftp clients so this
isn't a limitation of the ftp protocol.

If you think there is more information relevant to this issue you can
provide, please do it in the bug report i open upstream:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524880

If you don't have a GNOME bugzilla account and/or don't want to create
it, please comment here mentioning this so i could update the report
upstream.

Thanks.

[Bug 208524] Re: Gvfs ftp module doesn't display file whose name is longer than 42 characters

2008-03-28 Thread Basilio Kublik
- At the bottom left, a console with the first line containing 0-9 digits until
complete 42 chars, and the following lines some files with names starting from
40, 41, 42, 43 and one of 77 characters, without considering the file extension
as part of
the name.

- The bottom right console shows a ftp client listing the content of the
directory containing the test files, displaying every file.

- At the top, nautilus using the gvfs ftp backend listing just the 3 files
which doesn't exceed the 42 chars barrier.

[Bug 208548] [NEW] en_SE locale needed to get correct weekdays in Sweden

2008-03-28 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

This bug is about the calendar applet in GNOME, but I don't know which
package that is.

Latest Hardy, updated as of 2008-03-29.

In short: When in Sweden, the week should start on Monday, no matter
what language is chosen. When I pick English, it's set to Sunday (locale
becomes en_US).

That it is even tied to language or locale is fundamentally broken, as
is the fact that it is not possible to choose differently if the default
guess is wrong. Why the *language* would matter is anybody's guess.

See bug #2098 among others for background, discussion, etc.

But, as it's broken and is probably gonna stay that way, I ask that a
en_SE locale is added instead. It's extremely common here to use English
language (on Windows installs as well), for a number of reasons. Windows
does the right thing with the calendar though.

If an en_SE locale is added and being picked when a user installs the
English/Sweden combination, it's resolved for us at least, like it was
for en_GB in bug #2098. Picking them off one at a time like that is not
optimal, but it's better than nothing. :)

Thanks!

[Bug 195434] Re: Hardy alpha5: Shutting down GDM takes a long time.

2008-03-28 Thread Dean Moreton
Can confirm this issue with up to date Hardy beta. When shutting down
my laptop with fresh Hardy install X will be dumped straight away and I
am dropped to a terminal for at least 30 seconds until I get a quick
barrage of Networkmanager related messages then finally the shutdown
splash screen.

Looking in /var/log/syslog I noticed gdm was getting a SIGABRT and you
can also see the 30 or so second delay in shutdown:

Not sure if useful but I'll attach a log from /var/log/gdm

[Bug 208535] [NEW] Hardy beta: gnome-display-properties allows switching off the only monitor

2008-03-28 Thread Gábor Szeder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

If there is only one monitor in the system, the user can choose "Off"
from gnome-display-properties' "Resolution" combo box, and there is
nothing to prevent applying the changes, not even a warning. Moreover,
the changes are stored in ~/.gnome2/monitors.xml, and will be loaded on
each subsequent login, even on failsafe logins(!). The user has to
delete that file (or fill in its contents appropriately, if he can)
before login, to restore the display.

A solution to Bug #197673 might be considered as a workaround for this
problem, as it will at least not overwrite monitors.xml with a
monitorless configuration.

But the real solution is clearly to prevent choosing "Off" on all of the
monitors.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 208538] Re: Can't unzip 7z archives in Hardy

2008-03-28 Thread François Tissandier
In fact I was missing the p7zip package.

But it's clearly written in the file roller package description that
7zip is supported, so I thought something was wrong.

It's not big deal, but still wasting some time. So I think:

-the package description should be modified to indicate clearly that
additional packages are needed for some formats.

-file roller could propose to add the missing packages just like totem
proposes to add missing codecs

[Bug 208538] [NEW] Can't unzip 7z archives in Hardy

[Bug 208524] [NEW] Gvfs ftp module doesn't display file whose name is longer than 42 characters

2008-03-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I uploaded file to my freebox hard drive (it is a french set top box)
But the file didn't display in nautilus while it does well in gftp or anyother
ftp client.

With some tests i discovered that the file is not displayed if its name
is longer than 42 characters.

It is really easy to reproduce ... just open an ftp and rename a file in
it to increase its length and the file will disappear from nautilus.

[Bug 193457] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2008-03-28 Thread Francisco Isgleas
Think I got it. Since it was breaking while playing the same files, and
I think g_str_hash() refers to string management, manually edited the
file's tag. After that, rhythmbox does not crash again, at least not
with those tag edited files, and at least not for the same g_str_hash()
issue.

Can anybody confirm this? I guess the problem is that the file's
original tag was edited with iso8859-1 charset, and maybe some wrong
character got into the tag. Now the tag was edited with UTF-8.

[Bug 206279] Re: sftp connection on local network freezes

2008-03-28 Thread fjgaude
With the box I'm having this trouble with, gvfs 0.2.2 is what I'm using
but still have the same issues. OTOH, I installed on another partition
the beta Hardy CD, then installed all the updates, about 200 at once,
and the issue is not there. So we likely have a situation that if you
haven't updated the original beta daily, or something like that, missing
an update or more, then having updates overlay updates, this issue we
are seeing occurs.

I'll keep both installs and keep them updated daily and see what happens
until the release.

Thanks for your interest and desire to make Hardy the best ever.

[Bug 208520] Re: segfault on shutdown after nautilus not responding

2008-03-28 Thread Basilio Kublik
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retarcer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
"/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash" in
a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently.

In case you don't have a .crash file associated to the process, please
change the status of this report back to "New" and provide your
/var/log/syslog, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and the
content of /var/log/gdm as separated attachments.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-03-28 Thread Master Ar2ro
This bug is still present in the hardy beta (hardy-desktop-amd64.iso
from march 28). I attach the complete log of my gdb session. It took me
7 tries at gdb just starting rhythmbox and closing it right after it
starts. It happens when I have an Audio-CD inserted.

[Bug 208503] [NEW] System monitor Processes tab has too many columns by default

2008-03-28 Thread seanh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

do we really need to see the Virtual Memory, Resident Memory, Writable
Memory, Shared Memory, X Server Memory and just plain Memory of every
process by default? This makes the number of columns far too long so
that the horizontal scroll bar has to come into it. How about just
Memory?

Similarly, just % CPU should do instead of % CPU and CPU Time.

This almost gets rid of the horizontal scroll bar but the Command Line
column is too long.

[Bug 204536] Re: sound volume always resets to 100% after reboot

2008-03-28 Thread Master Ar2ro
** Description changed:

Every time I reboot I get the sound volume back to 100%, but the sound
works fine apart from this. It's just *very* annoying to have to reset
the volume every time I boot the PC. I set the volume from the volume
icon in the system tray. I have two sound cards installed on my system
(one on the motherboard and a SB Audigy), but I'm using only the Audigy.
+ Another thing is that the mixer applet often incorrectly shows volume as
+ muted when it's not.

I'm using the hardy beta (hardy-desktop-amd64) from march 19th 2008.

[Bug 208282] Re: Dbus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply

2008-03-28 Thread Bowmore
I'm not convinced this is not a bug.
I can confirm that this problem has occurred recently, actually about one week
ago.

I have a Dlink DNS-323 connected to my network over SMB. The FTP-server
has worked throughout Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy and Hardy alpha/beta without
any complains. I don't use it daily but a week ago when samba among
other things was updated i Hardy it just stopped working. Actually not
true, it works for 1-3 minutes of browsing around and then it hangs and
after another minute or two after which I get this messages saying that
a reponse (DBUS_ERROR_NO_REPLY) is never returned.

When booting my Gutsy and Windows everything works fine.

I checked what happened a week ago at the time when the problem arose.
Among other things I found the most suspected in my mind was that
- samba was upgraded from 3.0.28a-0ubuntu3 to 3.0.28a-1ubuntu1
- smbclient was upgraded from 3.0.28a-0ubuntu3 to 3.0.28a-1ubuntu1
- samba-common was upgraded from 3.0.28a-0ubuntu3 to 3.0.28a-1ubuntu1

I thought (hoped) that maybe 3.0.28a-1ubuntu2 should cure the problem
but it didn't so. I also made at backup of my smb.conf and let i update
that one acc to the author even though there were just a few minor
changes.
