[Bug 228062] [NEW] gnome-volume-manager - could not mount drive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager Yesterday gnome-volume-manager got into a state where it could no longer mount external drives. The drives appeared in the 'Places' menu and also in the 'Places' window in nautilus, but clicking on them had no effect. There was no error information whatsoever reported by dmesg (or in any of the system log views), only the usual messages like [ 2651.681313] sd 22:0:0:0: [sdi] Attached SCSI disk [ 2651.681346] sd 22:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg8 type 0 ie showing that the drive was recognised. When I ran nautilus as root, it could mount/unmount the drives (although it kept segfaulting, with for instance "nautilus[28230]: segfault at 4a2c rip 7f1f8bac1f0f rsp 7fff9706e280 error 4" reported), so it was a permissions problem or an authentication problem. Restarting hal (sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart) had no effect. What fixed it was restarting dbus (sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart). There are two bugs here: (1) the original bug where nautilus/gnome- volume-manager lost permission to mount/unmount, and (2) the fact that no error information whatsoever was reported. Since I can't reproduce (1), I thought it worthwhile still to report (2) - nautilus/gnome- volume-manager should at least report if it hasn't got permission to mount a drive due to a failure elsewhere in the system. Other information: I could not alter the screen brightness until I restarted dbus - the little window appeared when I pressed the keys, but the brightness bar was empty and the brightness did not change. Version information: Ubuntu 8.04 (amd64) nautilus 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu5 gnome-volume-manager 2.22.1-1ubuntu6 dbus 1.1.20-1ubuntu1 hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu8.1 ** Affects: gnome-volume-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-volume-manager - could not mount drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228062 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-volume-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs
I think there are two different bugs overlapping in this ticket. Over sshfs, gedit and anjuta (on gutsy and hardy), fail to save and display a message with something like 'You cannot save ...'. The problem and the message go away if the remote filesystem is mounted with sshfs -o uid=$UID. This seems to indicate that gedit and anjuta are checking the owner and permission bits of the file before trying to write instead of actually trying to save the file. The issue on smbfs with file modified times might be a different issue altogether. -- gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34813 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 174482] Re: Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64
I also have a brand new 64bit laptop that consistantly crashes with a 64 bit Intel Core Duo 2.4ghz. It has a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 (no M$oft) and will consistently crash upon resuming a session . atotic stated the issue very well above. [Bug 228040] [NEW] gnome-power preferences slider values do not agree with gconf settings for gnome-power-manager
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Found using Ubuntu 8.04 gnome-power-manager 2.22.1-1ubuntu4. The values set for the time to sleep (the computer or the display) using the sliders in the gnome-power-preferences dialog do not agree with the values that can be found in gconf under apps > gnome-power-manager > timeout. For instance, I set the slider for the delay to sleep the computer (when on battery power) to 30 minutes using the gnome-power-preferences slider. Then, when I looked at the value using gconf, it said 1200 seconds (20 minutes). I changed the value to 15 minutes in the preferences dialog and then gconf said 300 seconds (10 minutes). Also, while fixing this request, the sliders should be adjusted so that the values can go below 11 minutes. I would like to be able to set my display sleep timeout as low as 30s without have to use gconf. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-power preferences slider values do not agree with gconf settings for gnome-power-manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 209520] Re: SMB error: Unable to mount location when server configured with security=share
As Sebastien has already noted, it is important to be able to track unrelated bugs in separate reports so that we can clearly see when a given bug has been addressed. Currently, there are two bugs related to nautilus SMB support which are being tracked for updates to Ubuntu 8.04. One is that nautilus does not prompt for authentication information when browsing shares on a server; this is tracked as bug #207072. The other is that nautilus doesn't connect successfully if using security=share; that bug is tracked here, and I've now updated the bug description to reflect this. If you are experiencing any other symptoms besides those I've just described, please, do *not* use either of these two bug reports to discuss it. Instead, please file a new bug report, and follow up here with a pointer to the new bug and a (brief) description of your problem. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu Hardy) Target: None => ubuntu-8.04.1 -- SMB error: Unable to mount location when server configured with security=share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/209520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition
thanks for the hint rocko, and thanks for the read sebastian bacher. i know that we cant go around making the ntfs drive owned by the user, but changing the fstab line to something like: /dev/sda2 /c ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1 gives some useful results at least: files are deleted with a single delete key, and appear in trash:// but havent been copied on to the other partition, but are rather stored in the folder .Trash-1000. (if the fstab line is changed back, files in .Trash-1000 do not appear in trash://), so it is all technologically possible Security concerns dont really exist with trash folders on shared drives: If you delete a file that was public on an ntfs drive, you expect it to go to your trash, and will expect it to still be public, and if you really want to get rid of it you will know you have to empty your trash. The problem set up in gutsy was where file were deleted and then vanished from the gui, but still existed on the hard drive, ie security worry as people thought it was gone, but it wasnt. As the files are now in the gui there is no problem any more. This is the expected behaviour. If another user puts a file in your recycle bin maliciously, this can hardly be called a security concern either. The idea of potentially a malicious file appearing in your trash and you opening it is not really something to worry about. The exact same thing could happen in the drive itself, ie a user puts a malicious file in your reservered (ie by social convention) folder on the ntfs drive, and you wonder where it is from and open it. the fact that it is now the trash folder as well adds nothing. if each user has a seperate .trash-{user} folder on the ntfs drives, the above concerns only exist if another user on the system goes out of their way to either read someone elses trashed files, or to put a file into someone elses trash folder. But as there is no concept of any security on this drive, this is already the case: a user can go out of their way read someone else's files, or to put something into someone else's reserved (ie by social convention) folder. by putting an ntfs drive into your computer the users and admin have to accept that there is a potential security hole through this drive, and are relying on trust for your users, the trash is no different all the technology is there now. the only worry is security concerns, but they are really moot. We cant help people who have ntfs drives, they know that security is weaker. They must accept that any files stored on that partition are going to be public untill they are completely removed (but now are not put under the false impression that they are gone), and also that any other user is free to put any file onto that drive, which you might bump into by accident. i suggest using .trash-{user}, and having the contents of that folder appear in the relevant user trash:// folder. if the admin cares about security of files it will be obvious that no files should ever be stored on the ntfs drive (or get rid of the drive), if the admin lets the users store file on this drive, then it is clear that the admin is relying on trust between the users when dealing with files on this drive, so the trash system i just described is appropriate, and isnt any more vulnerable to attack or security comprimise. -- Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

The problem was that it was far to easy to think that the default was the UK international with deadkeys (basically, it was the first option). In hardy the default is correct. I think also that was an "update from previous distro" artefact which meant that gnome required a keyboard, but wasn't defined. It wasn't taking the default from X11 anymore.
