[Bug 403304] [NEW] All application links to web browsers consistently fail with no error message

2010-01-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 9.04
Linux 2.6.28-13-generic

No matter what application I start, I cannot get it to open a new web
page. This bug is a bit hard to describe, so I'll do so by example:

In nautilus, go to Help Get Help Online. Nothing will happen.
In xchat, select a link to open it. Nothing will happen.
In any application, go to Report A Problem. When it tries to open a new browser
window, nothing happens. No error message, nothing.

In Prefered Applications, I have Firefox set as the default app. I tried this
also with Opera, but it still did not work.
I can run the specified firefox default command from the command line to open a
new tab, no problems there.

I'm quite confused, as I can't seem to pin down this bug to any particular app.

I first noticed this bug while using xchat a few weeks ago. However, I
just did a fresh install of Jaunty a few weeks ago so I'm not sure if it
was working in the first place.

2010-01-12 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
All of these solutions are no solutions for me; I'm using my
girlfriends macbook and she obviously needs norwegian
machintosh-layout, but I need norwegian dvorak. So this bug still
bites.

Ohwell, she doesn't use the terminal all too much, but I've taught her
CTRL+C closes her while true: python programs, so I can't really just
change it to CTRL+I, because that's wrong and won't work on another
computer.

Sorry for the ugly 's, AltGr only works in gnome-terminal (doh!).

This change is already in Lucid. I think it's unlikely that the patch
will make it in to Karmic - the patch looks non-trivial, and the bug
doesn't really meet the criteria for fixing as a SRU anyway (please see

[Bug 506331] [NEW] pdftohtml fails to set charset

2010-01-12 Thread Rodrigo Rivas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: poppler-utils

Using Ubuntu 9.10, poppler 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1.
Executing pdftohtml x.pdf writes three files: x.html, xs.html and
x_ind.html. The two latter lacks the META lines.
The one I miss is the charset definition:

META http-equiv=Content-Type content=text/html; charset=UTF-8

[Bug 344267] Re: users administration tool deletes all users

2010-01-12 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Too bad, that's generally the problem with such major bugs - they happen
only once, else we would have fixed that for a long time. As I said, I
can't happen anymore in Lucid, at least not with such harsh
consequences. For the rest (group memberships), I let you follow
progress on bug 240437 if you want (it has the very same symptoms but is
reproducible). I have good hope that fixing that one will fix yours too.

Thanks for your interest too! I have to close this report because we
won't be able to get enough information (auth.log is nice for a start,
though, but not enough).

Yeah, that's it. Sorry for the short comment, that was mainly a

But don't hope for a SRU, that fix relies on a whole series of
architectural changes that are being introduced in Lucid.

[Bug 322314] Re: Automatically connect on startup setting confusing - users may expect this to run Empathy on login

2010-01-12 Thread Martin
IMHO the state of Empathy (running/not running) should be remembered
automatically (there shouldn't be a need to save the desktop session).

See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506311 for the upstream
Empathy bug for this. See
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79285#c14 for how Havoc
Penningtion co solved it in Mugshot (but I think there is a better way
with the new session stuff, see AutostartCondition in
http://live.gnome.org/SessionManagement/NewGnomeSession).

Doesn't seem like upstream likes this idea but I think it's the right
way to go from an interaction design viewpoint. (It's a bit unclear to
me if the upstream bug was fixed properly or not. See
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506311#c15 .)

[Bug 506366] [NEW] deskbar don't allow to run bash script anymore

2010-01-12 Thread Beastyvoid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

Since karmic, deskbar doesn't allow anymore to run a bash script. Which
was the case before.

For example, if I have a bash script with executable bit set in ~/bin
called foobar, I was able previously to input in the Deskbar input
field ~/bin/foobar and it would just run it.

Now Deskbar opens the bash script with gedit instead. Of course that's
now what I want from a shell script.

Nautilus is asking me if I want to run it or use the default action, if
I run a bash script from the UI.

I've tried to input into Deskbar input field /bin/bash ~/bin/foobar
but even that is not working.

Version of Ubuntu in which bug is found : Karmic
Version of Deskbar:
ii deskbar-applet 2.28.0-0ubuntu3

Best regards

[Bug 506368] [NEW] UPnP error when setting metadata using SetAvTransportURI

2010-01-12 Thread Tim Cussins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Invoking SetAvTransportURI with metadata causes the RhythmBox media
renderer to respond with an error - invocation error code 714 without
words.

I would expect the media renderer to accept metadata being passed to it

etc, or at the very least silently ignore the metadata passed

[Bug 488158] Re: users-admin should leave adduser handle main group creation

2010-01-12 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yeah, I thought first we might also choose a UID which would also be a
free GID. Anyway, that's fixed another way now: with the default
profiles configuration file (/etc/gnome-system-tools/user-
profiles.conf), we only force group memberships. UID, Home prefix and
shells are now determined by adduser, since we didn't really care.

So that is fixed with 2.29.2, which will be uploaded soon in Lucid.
adduser task is Invalid.

[Bug 89901] Re: [services-admin] Services' description not quite informative

2010-01-12 Thread Tobias C. Rittweiler
This bug has still not been addressed (9.04), and I fully concur with
the previous posters.

It would help already -- and this is hopefully only a small bit of
_technical_ rather than social work -- is if the Services entries
were linked to packages.

So you can get at information about the package, its description,
and, in particular, to get at a link to the official website where one
can obtain more information.

[Bug 206547] Re: Open (but do not raise) new conversation windows automatically

2010-01-12 Thread Pēteris Krišjānis
I strongly disagree with opening windows automatically by default, It
breaks all indicator applet idea and in my humble opinion current way is
the best (give indication that you need to give attention to
conversation. If you can't then you don't have tens of windows lingering
open in the background). Popup windows always have been bad stuff, and I
don't see any real reason to enable it by default just because of legacy
of IM clients. Option will be available and that's nice (thanks to
Guillaume and other devs). But I think it should be left as it is.

It could be enabled when accounts are imported from Pidgin or some other
IM client, for example.

[Bug 502142] Re: my keyboard deconfigure every time i reboot my system

2010-01-12 Thread Susan Cragin
Here's what happens to me. It's very similar but not identical.
My primary keyboard layout is the Dvorak. I used that even to install the
system.
Sometimes my husband needs to use the computer in the morning, so in system /
preferences / keyboard I set the default to USA, and close down the computer.
In the morning, my husband boots up. The keyboard preferences are still set to
USA, but the actual keyboard is Dvorak. In other words, the identities have
changed. Dvorak is now USA, and USA is now Dvorak.
But not entirely.
When I get up, I open hnb, a terminal program.
When I press the keys, the letters come out Dvorak even though the preferences
are still set to USA. But then I press CTL-S to sort, and the keys register as
USA!
The only way to straighten everything out is to re-boot with everything set to
the installation keyboard, which is Dvorak.

So basically, when the computer boots, it goes toward the installation
keyboard, and disregards the changes in preferences / keyboard. Except
for the CTL keys (and maybe ALT -- I haven't checked that.)
