[Bug 677382] Re: gir-repository fails to build from source in natty: eliminate reverse dependencies

2010-12-17 Thread Timo Jyrinki
New midgard2-core was synced from Debian fixing alternate dependencies
and building now finely in Debian for all architectures, possibly making
this bug valid one again (not that I understand much about the problem)
since it's now dependency waiting on gir-repository-dev instead of
building. Piotrek, what do you think should be done about it, fix it
somehow in Debian or patch separately here in Ubuntu?

[Bug 677382] Re: gir-repository fails to build from source in natty: eliminate reverse dependencies

2010-12-17 Thread piotras
I would fix midgard2-core in Debian to avoid deltas for future sync.
Solution should be to add 'libgirepository1.0-dev, gir-repository-dev |
libgirepository1.0-dev' to build dependencies. And I think this should
not introduce http://bugs.debian.org/603235 again.

Ok, I have attached the txt file to this e-mail. Plus, I reproduced
this bug and got the result from .xsession-errors

ERROR:io-xcf.c:1443:xcf_image_stop_load: code should not be reached

This was the latest error logs from that file.

2010/12/16 Marcel Stimberg marcelcod...@googlemail.com:
Hmm, ok, could you try the following command?
 gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers thumbnailers.txt

This generates the file thumbnailers.txt in the current directory, could you
attach this to the bug report?
When you get the crash, are there any error messages in the file
 ~/.xsession-errors ?

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello, I use Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition and have a problem. I use GIMP as
my primary image editing software and mostly like to compress my works (xcf
files) to make them smaller. Anyways, when I save my file as xcf.bz2 in Gimp
to my home directory or somewhere else, my nautilus crashes while trying to
show thumbnail of the file. I think there might be a problem on this feature
of nautilus. However, if I save my work as xcf.gz or solely xcf, no problem
 occurs.

 Thanks for your interest.

2010-12-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
thank you for your bug report but that's described in the changelog

gnome-control-center (1:2.32.1-0ubuntu2) natty; urgency=low

  * 95_desktop-effects-integration.patch: drop the desktop effects tab,
the desktop environment selection is made on gdm nowadays and changing the
wm is a techinical task, not something that requires a graphical interface.
The capplet which is being patched for the desktop effects is going to be
deprecated in GNOME3 so in any case that would need to be rewritten.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Lonnie : I agree... In July I kind of said please guys, let's stop
complaining / commenting if no new relevant piece of information is
added... But... This bug has been here for so long it's getting
ridiculous (no offense to anyone involved, but this report was created
in sept 2009 and almost everyone gets this bug).

It occurs almost every day on my setup and I saw it occur on every setup
I installed Ubuntu. (provided Compiz was enabled)

I'm definitely not the kind to complain at all, but this is making me
lose faith in the development process :) It seems the GNOME devs don't
use Ubuntu so don't reproduce it and don't care (as it seems related to
the Human / Murrine GTK Engine) / or are too busy with GNOME shell / or
the Ubuntu devs are too busy with UNITY and think anyway in 11.04 the
old UI will be ditched.

But well, the bug will still be in the LTS for one more year (!). And
many people will prefer to keep the old Gnome panels interface.

Well I don't know what to say. Should we set up a bounty ? Or a petition
? I get phone calls of my friends telling me they cannot shut down the
computer or access the applets... Gees !

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics card:
 ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
 panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
 them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

[Bug 655422] Re: Sending pdf and ps files to a printer routinely fails, but removing all personal GNOME/GTK config solves problem

2010-12-17 Thread Matthew Williams
I solved this problem for my HP3055 by deleting the printer from the
server and recreating it. However, instead of choosing the
recommended driver which is Postscript based, I chose the PCL one
instead. I haven't had a problem since.

I don't think that this is a true solution, as I am simply avoiding the
chain of processing elements (ps2ps, pdf2ps) that I believe was causing
my issue. However, my printer now works!

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics card:
 ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
 panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
 them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

nautilus crashes when tries to show a thumbnail of an xcf.bz2 file

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Joaquin : TOMA ? Googled it, didn't find :)

All : hmm, I'm not sure this is relevant but this seems interesting.
Usually I only keep a top panel and corruption appears in the indicators
area and disappears with a killall gnome-panel. I recently started my
/home from scratch and kept everything as conservative out of the
box as possible.

I noticed that : corruption appears here more frequently in the bottom
panel (show desktop applet) (and once in a while in the top panel near
the canonical indicators). So this seems unrelated to the indicators.
More importantly, when calling killall gnome-panel corruption doesn't
disappear systematically. It actually makes it happen about 50% of the
cases !

In other word : starting from an out of the box' Ubuntu install with
Compiz, corruption may be triggered when calling a couple of times
killall gnome-panel and can thus be reproduced very easily. Also, it
is thus 1) not related to the indicators 2) not related to the GNOME
startup itself as it can be reproduced afterwards

We may add 3) seems to be related to themes that use the Murrine GTK
engine ? 4) is definitely triggered when Compiz is enabled.

I'm making assumptions and definitely didn't re-read the hundreds of
comments of this bugreport. Do you think guys we could/should set up a
wiki page or a poll or another statistical tool to have a better
consciousness / visibility of the different factors at play ?

(also : noone interested by a bounty ?)

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Sorry for polluting this thread even more but : some core GNOME
developers do read the upstream bugreport here :
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=596923

Can we agree on a set of facts that we could forward to them ? For
instance, V. Untz is aware that the bug is not triggered by the
indicators as corruption can happen even if all of them are removed.
Also, he seems to take seriously the fact that it would be related to
the Murrine GTK engine.

[Bug 690578] [NEW] I have exactly the same problem - please solution

2010-12-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have the latest updates for 10.10 on the laptop. I have been having
trouble for the last few months with the screensaver. When the computer
goes idle for the allotted time it does not activate the screen saver.
It instead jumps to locking me out and killing all of the programs that
I was working on. Several times I have lost presentations or word docs
because I have to leave the computer for a few minutes. I have tried
changing the config file so that there is a delay between the lock out
screen and the screensaver. I have turned off the lock out option in the
screen saver menu. I have check and rechecked the power settings. I am
no closer than I was before to solving this. I teach and there are
several times in the past week that I have lost the presentation because
I was demonstration something and the computer went into the lock out
screen and I had to restart everything. Is this a bug or am I missing a
fix somewhere?

[Bug 690364] Re: nautilus crashes when tries to show a thumbnail of an xcf.bz2 file

2010-12-17 Thread Marcel Stimberg
The file /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xcf.so is not
part of the standard Ubuntu repositories, and is responsible for the crash. If
you installed this via a .deb package you should be able to find out which
package is responsible with
dpkg -S libpixbufloader-xcf.so

Otherwise you can delete or rename it, e.g. with

sudo mv /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-
xcf.so{,.bak}

[This will ask you for your password]
But you will then also lose support for xcf in applications like eog. You can
still get thumbnails for xcf files by installing the gnome-xcf-thumbnailer
package.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Mahendra Tallur
One more thing that I find interesting :

- earlier I said I could trigger some corruption in the bottom panel, near the
show desktop applet, by invoking killall gnome-panel a couple of times :
this is true
- HOWEVER, I moved the applets and put them back EXACTLY the way they were
before and noticed the corruption didn't happen anymore when calling killall
gnome-panel.
- I thought wtf ? so I started a guest session. The panel looks exactly the
same. And now, calling killall gnome-panel does indeed trigger the very same
corruption in more than 50% of the cases.

But what can be the differences between 2 bottom panels that contain
exactly the same applets at the same location, one of which does trigger
the bug easily...

[Bug 657357] Re: GTK Printing Dialog: Duplex printing on HP inkjets does not work

2010-12-17 Thread jpka
Hi Till, thank you, two-sided printing now works well again. But any
printing using SpliX works *only* when i set 600 dpi resolution. At 300
dpi, printer even not eat paper, but flashing 4 toner LEDs in very
specific manner (it's a secret code? I can't decode this). At 1200 dpi,
printouts is almost black, like 100 times printing random text on same
sheet of paper. I can live well with 600 dpi; and i can give more info
and help testing if it's a bug in SpliX. Thanks!

[Bug 691611] [NEW] Help-Report a Problem... gives no feedback

2010-12-17 Thread Hugh Warrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If you click Help-Report a Problem in Nautilus, nothing happens. At
least, there is no visible indication that you successfully clicked the
menu entry for over a minute, at which point a 'collecting information'
dialog appears. By this time the user might reasonably have tried
clicking the entry a few times, leading to several bug report windows
all appearing on top of each other.

[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start

2010-12-17 Thread Roman Yagodin
One more sympthom: I may manually switch to Ambience theme, but icon
theme remains default.

Some things I done:

1) Removed all indicator applets from desktop panels;
2) In gconf-editor, set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/indicator/showFlags
back to 0/false/unchecked state;
3) Remove all keyboard indicator icons from /usr/share/pixmaps ~/.icons/flags
(with dir). And there was а [possible] duplicate: ru.png  ru.svg files;
4) Reboot;
5) Add indicator applets again.

After this, I have 4 hot and cold reboots - bug doesn't show up...
Crossing fingers :)

 Title:
nautilus crashes when tries to show a thumbnail of an xcf.bz2 file

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Great we found the culprit ;) Notifying the gloobus developers is very

@gloobus developers: There is basically the same bug report for chromium

That bug report contains a stacktrace:

[Bug 691667] [NEW] Clock-applet fragmented

2010-12-17 Thread Sam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Clean Maverick Installation.
Nothing related or clarifying in logfiles.

## Bottom panel
Add clock-applet to bottom panel.
Add three time zones.
Left click opens the applet somewhere up in the air of the desktop and in
addition reaching over the top edge.
Close it with left click.
Left click again shows calendar alone.

## Vertical panel right hand side
Add clock-applet to vertical panel.
Add four time zones.
Left click opens the applet, but cuts it off on top.
Close it with left click.
Left click again, applet only shows two time zones.

Expected is, the applet draws directly from the panel, showing time zones,
earth day-night and calendar on top.
The behaviour in Lucid was ok with same monitor 1680x1050.
e.g. http://wombatdiet.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/gnomeclock.jpg

If it isn't meant as feature I'd consider it as regression.

[Bug 691695] [NEW] Unhandled Exception: GLib.GException: Value for PNG text chunk Thumb::URI cannot be converted to ISO-8859-1 encoding.

2010-12-17 Thread Haggai Eran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

Hi,

I'm using Ubuntu Maverick (f-spot version 0.8.0-1). Some of my photos do
not appear in browse mode, and when I try to open them f-spot crashes
with the following output:

Unhandled Exception: GLib.GException: Value for PNG text chunk Thumb::URI
cannot be converted to ISO-8859-1 encoding.
  at Gdk.Pixbuf.Savev (System.String filename, System.String type,
System.String[] option_keys, System.String[] option_values) [0x0] in
filename unknown:0
  at FSpot.Utils.XdgThumbnailSpec.CreateFrom (Hyena.SafeUri uri, Hyena.SafeUri
thumb_uri, ThumbnailSize size, FSpot.Utils.PixbufLoader loader) [0x0] in
filename unknown:0
  at FSpot.Utils.XdgThumbnailSpec.LoadThumbnail (Hyena.SafeUri uri,

at FSpot.ThumbnailLoader.ProcessRequest (.RequestItem request) [0x0] in
filename unknown:0
  at ImageLoaderThread.WorkerThread () [0x0] in filename unknown:0

The path to the photo does not include only ISO-8859-1 characters, but
is UTF-8 encoded. Is this the cause of the problem? I don't remember any
problems with my paths in the previous versions of f-spot.

Regards,
Haggai

[Bug 691705] [NEW] Rhythmbox controls invalid when playing .asx stream

2010-12-17 Thread Bob Harvey
Public bug reported:

Using Rhythmbox 0.12.8 on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04

When I play BBC streams such as
# http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx
# http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4lw.asx
# http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r5l.asx
 the control gets confused.

If I double-click the item in the list I get a green arrowhead in the
list, but the play/pause control is still a green triangle saying play.
it's tooltip, however, says 'stop playback'. If I click on it it looks
exactly the same but 'not playing' appears underneath and the green
arrow in the list vanishes.

You can't restart with the play/pause control, you have to reselect from
the list.

It's all very confusing. it doesn;t work the way I would expect.

Sometimes the stream doesn't start, it goes straight to pause, and I
have no idea what is going on.

I would expect selecting the stream to initialise the control panel, and
the start/pause button to stop/start playing. I don't care whether it
restarts from the buffer, or restarts live, as long as I can see what is
going on.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Re: [Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-17 Thread Joaquin
TOMA is Spanish, ;)

2010/12/17 Mahendra Tallur 439...@bugs.launchpad.net

Please take a look at the list of duplicate bugs. Please think on how many

screenshots - we all know how the problem looks. We all appreciate your
involvement, but read previous post carefully prior you post your own. We
need to draw constructive conclusions and find the solution.

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics card:
 ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
 panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
 them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

[Bug 691728] [NEW] Right-clicking on Keyring icon causes seahorse-agent to become defunct

2010-12-17 Thread YS1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

Steps to reproduce :

1. Configure Seahorse to display a Keyring icon in the panel when a key is in
memory (through Système Préférences Chiffrement et trousseaux).
2. Run programs which use Seahorse-agent ; enter pass-phrases.
3. Everything works fine. A Keyring icon correctly appears in the panel
(notification zone ?), indicating that some keys are in memory.
4. Right-click on that icon.

Expected behaviour :

I do not know : popup a menu, do nothing, or whatever.

Observed behaviour :

1. The Keyring icon disappears.
2. The seahorse-agent process becomes defunct ; this is shown by running ps
-ef | grep agent.
3. As a result, no further access to the keys is possible : any connection to
the seahorse socket (/tmp/seahorse-whatever/S.gpg-agent) is refused.

[Bug 691782] [NEW] gnome-applets-data needs mono icons for panel

2010-12-17 Thread Cypher2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

visual consistency being the next step in making ubuntu THE best o-s OS.

one very big bugger is the lack of consistency within all icon sets
available throughout the system.

creating new, up to date, scalable and clean icons for everything that
has been overlooked is a must, starting by the gnome-panel and its
useful applets (hmm hmm, cpufreq...)

MAKE THEM ALL MONO

also, purging all old and obsolete xpm versions that are dragged with
the software package versions would be good.. thsoe are ugly and
unnecessary! (view /usr/share/pixmaps)
