[Bug 409706] Re: gnome-help excessive CPU usage
I am able to reproduce this on a Maverick amd64 system running a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (by running the command yelp ghelp:user- guide -- I cannot try running yelp with no arguments, since this system is affected by Bug 433504). The CPU spikes to 100% for at least 4 seconds. ** Tags added: amd64 lucid maverick -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/409706 Title: gnome-help excessive CPU usage -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 695929] [NEW] yelp takes a long time to load About This Document in the Desktop User Guide
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp On a Maverick amd64 system with yelp 2.30.1-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-docs 10.10.5, and gnome-user-guide 2.30.0+git20100403ubuntu2, I ran yelp ghelp:user-guide. This system is affected by Bug 409706, but I waited several seconds until the CPU spike was over. Then I clicked About This Document on the right. (I have separately tried File About This Document, which behaves the same, except as detailed below.) I have done this several times, and it almost always takes at least ten seconds to load. While loading, the CPU spikes to near 100%. During this time (and immediately before), my CPU is loaded to less than 10% by other non- niced processes. This is a slight annoyance on my system, but I imagine that this lag could cause serious problems on systems with slower CPU's. Note that, unlike in Bug 409706, where the CPU spikes but the page is loaded and usable during the spike, in this bug, the page is not loaded until the spike is finished. (These bugs are also different in that one occurs when yelp is first run, while the other occurs when yelp loads a specific page. I am wondering if I should really be filing this bug against gnome-user-guide...but it seems to me that the cause of the lag is probably in yelp.) I have also found that: (1) After loading About This Document (by either means) and then browsing elsewhere, clicking About This Document in the File menu loads the About page immediately, without wait or excessive CPU usage, no matter what else has occurred in between. (2) After loading About This Document (by either means), clicking another link in the bar on the right (for example, Basic Skills) and then clicking About This Document again loads the About page immediately, without wait or excessive CPU usage. (3) After loading About This Document (by either means), clicking the back button (or clicking N links and then clicking the back button N+1 times) and then clicking About This Document in the bar on the right (NOT from the File menu) produces the same wait time and CPU spike as occurred when loading the About page the first time. I am able to reproduce this bug on a Maverick i386 system (with the same three package versons as on the amd64 system mentioned above), and also on a Natty i386 system with yelp 2.30.2-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-docs 10.10.4, and the same version of gnome-user-guide as on the Maverick systems (2.30.0+git20100403ubuntu2). [Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets
my 2 cents about that issue: there are two cases on my end: - a laptop dual booting windows+maverick (only): never met that issue - a desktop with multi boot: windows+lucid+maverick+natty (all i386) and sharing a single /home. With this config i continuously get issues like related with this report. Its clear to me that's happening because of all these ubuntu distros are sharing a single /home. As there are only common settings and configs, they are conflicting each others: example: as my latest settings are related to natty (and work properly), when i run maverick again then the panel is broken (icons desappeared). Readding the missing icons in maverick, then reopen natty, and the icons are duplicated now on natty so my conclusion is: as the settings related to a specific ubuntu distro are not signed and not affected exclusively to this distro, there are races/conflicts with other linux sharing the same /home and most of its hidden folders (.gconf, ...) Should like to know if other users with this config (single /home shared by multi linux distro) devs are agreeing too. In my point of view the latest distro settings override the previous settings (even they are related to a different distro/release), thats really a bed design. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 Title: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 53132] Re: [time-admin] We need a GUI to enable/disable utc
IMO it's rather lame on part of developers to assume that the user is too stupid to understand a phrase set hardware clock to UTC. Time zones are taught in 4th grade or so. Any adult brave enough to use linux is surely intelligent enough to understand that option. Silently setting UTC=yes by default results in inconveniences especially for beginners, because most of them will have a different main OS! Simply put, it's much easier to have this option displayed at install time than to spend 2 hours tracking it down, trying to unmolest the hardware clock. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/53132 Title: [time-admin] We need a GUI to enable/disable utc -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I have found that I only experience this bug when I run yelp with no arguments. If I run yelp with arguments (e.g. yelp ghelp:user-guide), this crash does not occur. [Bug 681837] Re: Yelp can't open link in a new window
I am able to reproduce this bug on a Maverick i386 system with yelp 2.30.1-0ubuntu1. It seems that xref: links cannot be opened in new windows, though other links can. An xref: link is a link to part of the current document. The bug is probably due to yelp trying to open the xref: link with respect to the non-document of the new window, rather than the document into which it refers (the document in the original window). I am also able to reproduce in on a Maverick amd64 system (same package version). However, it does NOT occur in a Natty i386 system (yelp 2.30.2-0ubuntu1). When I run yelp from a GNOME Terminal, no messages are printed to the command line during the time that I am waiting for yelp to load the gawk documentation. This does *not* occur with other info pages. For example, after installed gcc-doc 4:4.5.1-1ubuntu3 on the Natty system (and gcc-doc 4:4.4.4-1ubuntu2 on the Maverick system), the command yelp gcc-doc worked fine on both systems, and the wait time was only a few seconds in each case. ** Tags added: i386 maverick natty -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to yelp in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/587748 Title: unable to read gawk documentation in yelp -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 446211] Re: It doesn't show the line breaks in man pages
I can reproduce this in Maverick amd64 and Maverick i386 with yelp 2.30.1-0ubuntu1 and alltray 0.69-1ubuntu4, and in Natty i386 with yelp 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 and alltray 0.71b-1. (I don't have a Natty amd64 system to test this on.) On the Maverick systems, the page displays as in Simon's screenshot. In Natty, the spacing in the alltray manpage is wrong for only part (not all) of the OPTIONS list. I've attached a screenshot showing this. At first, I didn't think I could reproduce this bug, because in general, yelp renders whitespace in manpages just fine on my systems. Then I decided to install alltray and try it with that. It appears that the problem is only in rendering some manpages (or perhaps only in rendering alltray's manpage). For example, the list of command-line options in the manpage for the ls command is rendered fine. [Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Since no conclusions have been drawn regarding the cause of this issue, I'll add my two cents. I have a laptop (Intel graphics) and a desktop (ATI graphics), both running 10.10 with Compiz and IIRC both have been upgraded from previous releases (if it is important -- is there any way to check this?). No dual boot on any of them. I experience this problem only on laptop. Coincidentally, I also change resolution regularly only on laptop when docking it, making it use an external monitor. Also, only laptop is ever suspended, desktop is always powered off. When I experience this problem on the laptop, killall -HUP gnome-panel always fixes it (I believe). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 Title: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 574815] Re: clock 2.30.0 on ubuntu 10.04 amd64 does not update; times on locations do.
Further to my previous comment #16, I rebuilt my PC recently and opted to stick with 10.04 LTS. It's incredibly annoying that I'm still getting hit with this bug. My Skype icon is permanently grey (even though I am onine) and if I click to the left on the separator icon, it brings up my Pidgin IM window - the system knows what should be displayed there, but it's definitely hung. I think my best workaround is either run Alt-F2 killall gnome-panel or simply write a script with a sleep 5 to peform the same when I login each day. It's a bit of a kludge to be honest, but it seems to be the only solution for now. Please get this fixed, as it can't be that hard to have it working as expected? The panels will automatically respawn correctly. WORKAROUND 2: When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.
