[Bug 409706] Re: gnome-help excessive CPU usage

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I am able to reproduce this on a Maverick amd64 system running a 2.2 GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo processor (by running the command yelp ghelp:user-
guide -- I cannot try running yelp with no arguments, since this system
is affected by Bug 433504). The CPU spikes to 100% for at least 4
seconds.

[Bug 695929] [NEW] yelp takes a long time to load About This Document in the Desktop User Guide

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

On a Maverick amd64 system with yelp 2.30.1-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-docs
10.10.5, and gnome-user-guide 2.30.0+git20100403ubuntu2, I ran yelp
ghelp:user-guide. This system is affected by Bug 409706, but I waited
several seconds until the CPU spike was over. Then I clicked About This
Document on the right. (I have separately tried File About This
Document, which behaves the same, except as detailed below.) I have done
this several times, and it almost always takes at least ten seconds to
load. While loading, the CPU spikes to near 100%. During this time (and
immediately before), my CPU is loaded to less than 10% by other non-
niced processes. This is a slight annoyance on my system, but I imagine
that this lag could cause serious problems on systems with slower CPU's.

Note that, unlike in Bug 409706, where the CPU spikes but the page is
loaded and usable during the spike, in this bug, the page is not loaded
until the spike is finished. (These bugs are also different in that one
occurs when yelp is first run, while the other occurs when yelp loads a
specific page. I am wondering if I should really be filing this bug
against gnome-user-guide...but it seems to me that the cause of the lag
is probably in yelp.)

I have also found that:

(1) After loading About This Document (by either means) and then
browsing elsewhere, clicking About This Document in the File menu
loads the About page immediately, without wait or excessive CPU usage,
no matter what else has occurred in between.

(2) After loading About This Document (by either means), clicking
another link in the bar on the right (for example, Basic Skills) and
then clicking About This Document again loads the About page
immediately, without wait or excessive CPU usage.

(3) After loading About This Document (by either means), clicking the
back button (or clicking N links and then clicking the back button N+1
times) and then clicking About This Document in the bar on the right
(NOT from the File menu) produces the same wait time and CPU spike as
occurred when loading the About page the first time.

I am able to reproduce this bug on a Maverick i386 system (with the same
three package versons as on the amd64 system mentioned above), and also
on a Natty i386 system with yelp 2.30.2-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-docs 10.10.4,
and the same version of gnome-user-guide as on the Maverick systems
(2.30.0+git20100403ubuntu2).

[Bug 53132] Re: [time-admin] We need a GUI to enable/disable utc

2010-12-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Users will surely know what UTC is, but they'll have to be pretty smart
to guess without further information all the implications using UTC on
the hardware clock has. As I said, the installer should just disable UTC
in hardware clock if Windows is already installed. If we provide an
option for every special case, our installer will soon become unusable.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-31 Thread dino99
my 2 cents about that issue:

there are two cases on my end:
- a laptop dual booting windows+maverick (only): never met that issue

- a desktop with multi boot: windows+lucid+maverick+natty (all i386) and
sharing a single /home.
With this config i continuously get issues like related with this report. Its
clear to me that's happening because of all these ubuntu distros are sharing a
single /home. As there are only common settings and configs, they are
conflicting each others: example: as my latest settings are related to natty
(and work properly), when i run maverick again then the panel is broken (icons
desappeared). Readding the missing icons in maverick, then reopen natty, and
the icons are duplicated now on natty

so my conclusion is:
as the settings related to a specific ubuntu distro are not signed and not
affected exclusively to this distro, there are races/conflicts with other linux
sharing the same /home and most of its hidden folders (.gconf, ...)

Should like to know if other users with this config (single /home shared
by multi linux distro) devs are agreeing too. In my point of view the
latest distro settings override the previous settings (even they are
related to a different distro/release), thats really a bed design.

need to draw constructive conclusions and find the solution.

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics card:
ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

[Bug 574296] Re: Gnome theme not applied on session start

2010-12-31 Thread João Pinto
din99,
thanks for your willingness to help resolving this bugs, but your assessment is
incorrect, please read the previous comments before adding your own to a bug
report, many of the reports for this bug just as for bug 439448 are from people
with a single home, single release configuration.

There maybe issues resulting from running multiple releases with a
shared home, that is related to how different application versions
manage their data/settings, such issues (which seems to be your case)
are not related to the bugs being reported.

2010-12-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: unity

From Desktop (Minimize all windows, if you have any). Go to Top panel
Menu, Select Places -- Search For Files ...

That will open the Search Window, but no Text box is there.

I am using Acer Aspire 4720z

Please find the attached Screen shot for the same.

From any other File Manager window if i select Go -- Search For Files..
, Thats giving Search Box OK.

Actually what you're seeing is the nautilus menu, Unity does not have a

make that part a bit more intuitive though.

[Bug 53132] Re: [time-admin] We need a GUI to enable/disable utc

2010-12-31 Thread Elfin Slade
IMO it's rather lame on part of developers to assume that the user is too
stupid to understand a phrase set hardware clock to UTC. Time zones are
taught in 4th grade or so. Any adult brave enough to use linux is surely
intelligent enough to understand that option.
Silently setting UTC=yes by default results in inconveniences especially for
beginners, because most of them will have a different main OS!
Simply put, it's much easier to have this option displayed at install time than
to spend 2 hours tracking it down, trying to unmolest the hardware clock.

[Bug 433504] Re: yelp crashed with SIGSEGV in rrn_info_get_categories()

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I have found that I only experience this bug when I run yelp with no
arguments. If I run yelp with arguments (e.g. yelp ghelp:user-guide),
this crash does not occur. Perhaps this bug is related to yelp's attempt
to render the yelp main page (which might explain the similar crash
documented in Bug 644025, where yelp displays invalid characters
before crashing).

[Bug 409706] Re: gnome-help excessive CPU usage

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I am also able to reproduce it on a Natty i386 system (also with the
command yelp ghelp:user-guide). That system is a VMware Workstation
virtual machine with the 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo machine (running
Maverick amd64) as the host system. The Natty guest system runs yelp
2.30.2-0ubuntu1. The VMware Workstation version (in case it's relevant
for benchmarking or other purposes) is 7.1.3 build-324285.

I neglected to mention it before, but the Maverick amd64 system runs

[Bug 681837] Re: Yelp can't open link in a new window

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I am able to reproduce this bug on a Maverick i386 system with yelp
2.30.1-0ubuntu1. It seems that xref: links cannot be opened in new
windows, though other links can. An xref: link is a link to part of the
current document. The bug is probably due to yelp trying to open the
xref: link with respect to the non-document of the new window, rather
than the document into which it refers (the document in the original
window).

I am also able to reproduce in on a Maverick amd64 system (same package
version). However, it does NOT occur in a Natty i386 system (yelp
2.30.2-0ubuntu1). Perhaps the fix just needs to be backported to
Maverick (and other supported Ubuntu versions).

minutes to load (I didn't keep waiting after that, but it probably never
loads). When I run yelp from a GNOME Terminal, no messages are printed
to the command line during the time that I am waiting for yelp to load
the gawk documentation.

This does *not* occur with other info pages. For example, after
installed gcc-doc 4:4.5.1-1ubuntu3 on the Natty system (and gcc-doc
4:4.4.4-1ubuntu2 on the Maverick system), the command yelp gcc-doc
worked fine on both systems, and the wait time was only a few seconds in
each case.

[Bug 446211] Re: It doesn't show the line breaks in man pages

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I can reproduce this in Maverick amd64 and Maverick i386 with yelp
2.30.1-0ubuntu1 and alltray 0.69-1ubuntu4, and in Natty i386 with yelp
2.30.2-0ubuntu1 and alltray 0.71b-1. (I don't have a Natty amd64 system
to test this on.) On the Maverick systems, the page displays as in
Simon's screenshot. In Natty, the spacing in the alltray manpage is
wrong for only part (not all) of the OPTIONS list. I've attached a
screenshot showing this.

At first, I didn't think I could reproduce this bug, because in general,
yelp renders whitespace in manpages just fine on my systems. Then I
decided to install alltray and try it with that. It appears that the
problem is only in rendering some manpages (or perhaps only in rendering
alltray's manpage). For example, the list of command-line options in the
manpage for the ls command is rendered fine.

In all three cases, when I ran yelp from a terminal, it printed this to
the command line (which it does not usually do):

Unmatched element: HP

I'm not sure if that's relevant.

[Bug 695966] [NEW] Evolution CA Certificate import does not work for LDAP servers

2010-12-31 Thread Feisar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu 10.10 - The Maverick Meerkat
Evolution 2.30.3

When connecting to an LDAP server using TLS (to use as a contact source
within Evolution) there is no GUI available to import a Certificate
Authority or ignore an invalid certificate.

The only way to use LDAP and TLS in Evolution is to manually edit the
ldap.conf file (by adding 'TLS_REQCERTnever' or the local location
of the CA cert etc.).

I would expect, when using Evolution's Certificate import preferences
that importing a CA cert there would cause Evolution (or the LDAP
client) to accept the TLS connection.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-31 Thread Matija Polajnar
Since no conclusions have been drawn regarding the cause of this issue,
I'll add my two cents.

I have a laptop (Intel graphics) and a desktop (ATI graphics), both
running 10.10 with Compiz and IIRC both have been upgraded from previous
releases (if it is important -- is there any way to check this?). No
dual boot on any of them. I experience this problem only on laptop.
Coincidentally, I also change resolution regularly only on laptop when
docking it, making it use an external monitor. Also, only laptop is ever
suspended, desktop is always powered off.

When I experience this problem on the laptop, killall -HUP gnome-panel
always fixes it (I believe).

[Bug 574815] Re: clock 2.30.0 on ubuntu 10.04 amd64 does not update; times on locations do.

2010-12-31 Thread johnnyb0y
Further to my previous comment #16, I rebuilt my PC recently and opted
to stick with 10.04 LTS. It's incredibly annoying that I'm still getting
hit with this bug.

My Skype icon is permanently grey (even though I am onine) and if I
click to the left on the separator icon, it brings up my Pidgin IM
window - the system knows what should be displayed there, but it's
definitely hung.

I think my best workaround is either run Alt-F2 killall gnome-panel or
simply write a script with a sleep 5 to peform the same when I login
each day.

It's a bit of a kludge to be honest, but it seems to be the only
solution for now. Please get this fixed, as it can't be that hard to
have it working as expected?

Cheers all.

[Bug 667071] Re: archive manager

2010-12-31 Thread eric gabriel
I tried the resetting folder properties to open folders using the 'file
browser', as Robert suggested and presto it's all back to the way it
was. I remember the archive manager was trying to open the zip file i
downloaded and it would appear to load and then nothing would happen. I
tried this several times and still nothing. I closed all windows and
then manged to get to the file and open manually with the archive
manager. Anyway, after listening to the music files I couldn't open my
places folders anymore without Rythymbox opening instead.

The workaround works and I'll just use that if it happens again.

[Bug 695611] Re: palimpsest cannot recognize NTFS volumes that it previously created upon RAID arrays

2010-12-31 Thread Tim Kuechler
Screenshot showing palimpsest after system is shutdown and restarted.

1) Array auto started at reboot from /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf using:

ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid10 num-devices=4 metadata=01.02 name=ubuntu-
server:0 UUID=c60eb2ea:6a911abf:75743422:12ffb49d

2) Array auto mounted at reboot from /etc/fstab entry:

UUID=23559D7F45CD5191 /media/bliss ntfs rw,utf8 0 0

Note that palimpsest unaware that array is mounted and has read the
/dev/md0 partition table incorrectly (there isn't one, but palimpsest
assumes there is one)

[Bug 695611] Re: palimpsest cannot recognize NTFS volumes that it previously created upon RAID arrays

2010-12-31 Thread Tim Kuechler
Screen shot from second user hickimau, also reports same issue. Note
that the Meta data version of the RAID array is 1.2. This is the same
version as the RAID array that is reported in this bug. Also, according
to the forum thread referenced above, the underlying disk hardware is
the same model : WD20EARS (SATA 2TB 5400 RPM Western Digital Green
Drives)

Also Note that palimpsest reports the same partition sizes in both post-
reboot screen shots (this one and the one above) with the exception of
the second free block.

Common parameters in the two configurations:

Disk Hardware (WD20EARS)
NTFS File system
RAID Array metadata version

Differing parameters:

RAID Array size: (2TB vs 4TB)
RAID Array disk count: (2 vs 4)
RAID Array mode: (RAID1 vs RAID10)
RAID ARRAY Base Disk Formatting (Partition tables on each base disk vs NO
partition tables on each base disk)

** Attachment added: Screenshot showing exact same bug as reported by another
user (hickimau) in UBUNTU forums

[Bug 458331] Re: time-admin doesn't have Brazil's official time zone

Why do you think it is not a tzdata bug? time-admin merely shows
timezones as reported by /usr/share/zoneinfo/zone.tab, which is shipped
by tzdata, so the real bug must be there.

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics card:
 ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
 panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
 them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.
