[Bug 939747] [NEW] unable to change preferences when run under unity

2012-02-23 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Unity does not supply Gnome Shell's Appmenu and there is no epiphany-
globalmenu package or similar. There is no (easily identifiable) way to
access the Epiphany browser's preferences, not even with dconf-editor.

[Bug 712687] Re: gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason

2011-08-17 Thread toobuntu
LVDS1 reactivates when VGA1 is being dimmed just prior to being powered
off as a result of the inactivity timer. At the same time, the gnome
panels are moved from VGA1 to LVDS1. Unminimized application windows
remain on VGA1. The workaround described in Comment #3 restores things
to how they were and how they are supposed to be.

[Bug 712687] Re: gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason

2011-08-15 Thread toobuntu
Actually, I have some more information. This is with a multimonitor
setup: laptop and external VGA. The external monitor was set to on and
the laptop display turned to off. I now think this may be an issue
triggered, at least, by gnome-power-manager. Screensaver is set to
blank, but the timeout for powering off the display is shorter. When I
lock the screen and is powers off, this issue does not occur. When the
screen is powered off by the inactivity timeout, the laptop screen is
reactivated upon the subsequent power on and the gnome-panels appear
there. This is annoying and disruptive, especially for a still-supported
LTS release.

My workaround is to bring up a terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-T, and
invoking my dirty fix:

$ cat /usr/local/bin/mmfix
#! /bin/sh
set -e
set -u
set -x

# fix for multimonitor setup on ubuntu lucid
 xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --right-of LVDS1
 xrandr --output LVDS1 --off

[Bug 712687] [NEW] gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason

2011-02-03 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason. killing gnome-panel did
not make it reappear, although sticky notes disappeared and then
reappeared. after restarting gdm, and thus losing my whole login
session, the panels were present again.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2010-02-23 Thread toobuntu
Would it be out of place to suggest that an entry be added to the
release notes that this is a known issue and give the workarounds of:
(1) leaving the source window or program open until after the paste is
complete or (2) installing parcellite (any), glipper (Ubuntu), or
klipper (Kubuntu)? I do not know who is involved with the release notes;
would somebody please bring this to the appropriate person's (or team's)
attention for comment?

[Bug 422110] Re: stickynotes_applet crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-10-20 Thread toobuntu
Nan M: you need to restart the applet after installing the updated
version. You could kill gnome-panel (it will reload automatically), or
log out and log back in again.

$ killall gnome-panel

After that, everything works for me.

[Bug 422110] Re: stickynotes_applet crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-10-14 Thread toobuntu
Perhaps germane to this bug is something similar that had affected the
workspace switcher applet. The spin buttons were not working in the
preferences, just as with the stickynote applet (Default Note
Properties, Height and Width). Here's how it was fixed:

gnome-panel (1:2.27.92-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

 * New upstream version:
...
   Wnck Applets
   - Fix spin buttons not working in workspace switcher preferences
...
 * debian/patches/16_compiz_workspace_switcher.patch:
   - updated spin adjustments in the workspace switcher to work correctly
 (lp: #423493)

[Bug 426989] [NEW] unable to set more than default 2 workspaces/viewports

2009-09-09 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Set Desktop Effects to none, right-click on the workspace switcher
applet and the option is there to set the number of workspaces, but
changes are not persistent.

Since the advent of compiz, though, I think workspaces are deprecated
and (compiz's) viewports are used instead. So...

Open gconf-editor/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options, set hsize to more
than the default 2, and the change is not persistent.

I wonder if the problem is with gconf, as there is at least one other
applet (Sticky Notes) which is unable to save persistent preferences.

[Bug 426989] Re: unable to set more than default 2 workspaces/viewports

2009-09-09 Thread toobuntu
It surprised me, too, because the symptoms described in Bug 423493 only
partly matched my experience (spin buttons were not active, but the
values were set to 2, not 0), and that's why I filed a separate bug
report.

Before the update

Without desktop effects enabled, if I right-clicked on the workspace
switcher applet and went into the preferences, there was a section to
set number of workspaces. The spin buttons were indeed disabled as
described in Bug 423493, but I was still able to type the number 4 into
the textbox. However, the workspace switcher applet still showed only
two workspaces and when I would open the prefs again it did not show 4,
but the default 2.

After the update

The spin buttons were active and I could change the number of workspaces
by using them or by typing a number into the textbox and hitting the tab
key. gconf-editor now shows a 4 for the hsize key under
apps/compiz/general/screen0/options.

This issue is definitely resolved for me now.

[Bug 426368] [NEW] [karmic, regression] gnome-display-properties fails to set external 23 Dell monitor at full resolution with Desktop Effects enabled

2009-09-08 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

This may actually be a bug against compiz.

On a Sony VAIO VGN-TX650P laptop with integrated Intel 915 graphics,
Desktop Effects enabled, default behavior with an external VGA monitor
(Dell SP2309W) in karmic is to mirror the displays at the lowest common
resolution.

When I disabled the mirroring and set the external monitor to its full
resolution, the screen goes black (with a small vertical line along the
left edge). The same happens with xrandr --output VGA1 --mode
2048x1152. There is no failsafe to return to the prior working
resolution. Fortunately, I had a terminal open and was able to use
xrandr to return to the prior mode by typing blindly. But I was only
able to do that after several prior times of doing a hard poweroff
because the mouse was frozen and the whole system also seemed to be
frozen.

As you can see below, the modes are being correctly picked up, but
something goes wrong when full resolution is being applied and compiz is
running. Full resolution is successfully applied, with no blank screen,
when Desktop Effects are turned off.

[Bug 425026] [NEW] [karmic, regression] gedit .desktop file uses wrong value for Name

2009-09-05 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Prior releases labeled gedit simply as Text Editor in the
ApplicationsAccessories menu. Karmic Alpha 5 is using lowercase gedit.
Upstream seems to prefer gedit Text Editor which is not consistent
with the other core components of a default GNOME desktop.

$ head -n 3 /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=gedit
GenericName=Text Editor

Contrast with OpenOffice.org Writer:
$ grep -m 1 Name /usr/share/applications/openoffice.org-writer.desktop  grep
-m 1 GenericName /usr/share/applications/openoffice.org-writer.desktop
Name=OpenOffice.org Word Processor
GenericName=Word Processor

I'm a creature of habit, so I prefer simply Text Editor, but if upstream
is to be appeased, wouldn't Gedit Text Editor with a capital G be more
appropriate and consistent?

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-07-20 Thread toobuntu
To those who advocate removing the 'up' button: I disagree. It was
removed in Windows Vista, and someone had to make a shareware app to put
it back in. There are those of us who think linearly, and who use the
location bar by default. For us, it is a lot faster to use the up
button than to use breadcrumbs (which does not fit with the way our
minds work).

Please include a preference option for it to be put back in. Even
better, allow full customization of the toolbar like Firefox does.

[Bug 401468] [NEW] wishlist: eog, set default file path

2009-07-19 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

When opening pictures to view in eog, eye of gnome, the file chooser
defaults to the user's home directory. Given that this is an app for
viewing pictures, it would be preferable, and a usability improvement,
to default to the user's Pictures directory within their home folder.

There does not seem to be a preference setting for this within eog
itself nor in gconf.

[Bug 323606] Re: Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-04-06 Thread toobuntu
I just did some testing this weekend on my laptop, and indeed I did not
find gvfs (or any other) processes remaining after log off in jaunty. I
cannot give a more complete answer than that, though, as I no longer
have access to the original network with mounted cifs shares, use cases,
etc., etc., where this behavior was originally observed.

[Bug 336136] [NEW] gnome-panel crashed with signal 5 in _XError()

2009-02-28 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I didn't notice any crash, but apport popped up with this bug report.
It happened after I added four weather panel applets to the top panel.
After setting the locations, if I hovered over the icon it would show
the wrong city. So I logged out and back in, and that's when apport
wanted to report a gnome-panel crash. The panels are currently showing,
so maybe it is referring to when I logged out.

[Bug 323606] Re: Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-02-22 Thread toobuntu
Well, I have not tested _every_ time a user logs off, but the short
answer is yes. Although I no longer have access to the network where I
first discovered this issue, my recollection is that processes remain
every time a user logs off. If not every time, then nearly every time.
The remaining processes do not interfere with subsequent logins every
time, though. Only sometimes. I have not yet been able to determine
what exactly is preventing a subsequent login, but in a corporate
environment this has to be addressed without the need to call a
technician, hence the /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default modification.

I noticed that most of my other bug reports about this issue were
closed, even though I was simply following specific instructions to file
those reports. Are the other aberrant processes indeed being looked at
so this issue can be fixed?

[Bug 323582] [NEW] launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of, epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of,
epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0

I've had one or two PPA '+archive' pages open in each of epiphany-
browser and firefox-3.0 in intrepid for weeks now, although any
launchpad page will do. I either lock screen or sleep when away,
usually lock screen. CPU would always be at around 45% with those pages
loaded, with epiphany-browser and firefox as the top two processes.
edge.launchpad.net made no difference as opposed to launchpad.net.
Eventually, the CPU would climb all the way up to 90% and sit there for
a while, then go up to 100% and crash the browsers. It takes days until
the browsers will actually crash, though. Epiphany crashes first; it
seems to be significantly more affected by this than does Firefox.

With all launchpad pages closed, and all of the 8 browser windows with a
sum total of 64 tabs still open, CPU hovers at 10% (+/- 1%). I should
add that the machine was otherwise idle most of the time both when the
launchpad pages were loaded and after I closed them. Only had mrxvt
running screen, but all terminal emulator tabs were sitting idle, and
also sometimes ran liferea and pidgin or irssi, pcmanfm at times, and
evince and epdfview at times, too.

[Bug 323606] [NEW] Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs-fuse

This bug is being filed pursuant to the instructions of Sebastien
Bacher, who advised: the issue is not a gdm one, you should rather open
bugs for buggy servers which don't have a bug open yet
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/236210/comments/10).

[Similar bugs filed against: libbonobo (Bug #323604), evolution-data-
server (Bug #323607), and gconf (Bug #323608)]

After logging out of a GNOME session, processes owned by the now-logged-
out user still remain and interfere with subsequent logons.

e.g.

toobu...@uw1:~$ w
 11:20:37 up 2 days, 20:29, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.16, 0.17
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
toobuntu pts/0 uw5.local Fri17 0.00s 0.22s 0.00s w

toobu...@uw1:~$ ps U ed
  PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
20305 ? Ssl 0:00 /usr/lib/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-server -
20334 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/ed/.gvfs
20404 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-2.22 --oaf-a
21510 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 11

It seems that these processes are called by GDM, so a GDM restart gets
us to a clean slate again. But these processes should, in and of
themselves, know to terminate upon user log off. See a fuller discussion
re: cleaning of GNOME processes at logoff at the link I posted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/49594/comments/33

WORKAROUND - have GDM kill all processes owned by the user logging out
by adding a line to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

$ ls /etc/gdm/PostSession/
Default

$ tail /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
fi
  done
  IFS=$OLD_IFS
  echo $OUTPUT
}

# kill straggler processes after logout (LP: #236210)
pkill -u ${USER}

exit 0

-
FYI- From http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/docs/2.14/configuration.html :

When the user terminates his session, the PostSession script will be
run. Again operation is similar to Init, PostLogin and PreSession. Again
the script will be run with root privileges, the slave daemon will block
and the $USER environment variable will contain the name of the user who
just logged out and $DISPLAY will be set to the display the user used,
however note that the X server for this display may already be dead and
so you shouldn't try to access it. Also $X_SERVERS environmental
variable is set and this points to a fake generated X servers file for
use with the sessreg accounting application.

Note that the PostSession script will be run even when the display fails to
respond due to an I/O error or similar. Thus, there is no guarantee that X
applications will work during script execution.

[Bug 323608] [NEW] Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgconf2-4

This bug is being filed pursuant to the instructions of Sebastien
Bacher, who advised: the issue is not a gdm one, you should rather open
bugs for buggy servers which don't have a bug open yet
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/236210/comments/10).

[Similar bugs filed against: libbonobo (Bug #323604), gvfs (Bug
#323606), and evolution-data-server (Bug #323607)]

After logging out of a GNOME session, processes owned by the now-logged-
out user still remain and interfere with subsequent logons.

e.g.

toobu...@uw1:~$ w
 11:20:37 up 2 days, 20:29, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.16, 0.17
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
toobuntu pts/0 uw5.local Fri17 0.00s 0.22s 0.00s w

toobu...@uw1:~$ ps U ed
  PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
20305 ? Ssl 0:00 /usr/lib/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-server -
20334 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/ed/.gvfs
20404 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/evolution/evolution-data-server-2.22 --oaf-a
21510 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 11

It seems that these processes are called by GDM, so a GDM restart gets
us to a clean slate again. But these processes should, in and of
themselves, know to terminate upon user log off. See a fuller discussion
re: cleaning of GNOME processes at logoff at the link I posted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/49594/comments/33

WORKAROUND - have GDM kill all processes owned by the user logging out
by adding a line to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

$ ls /etc/gdm/PostSession/
Default

$ tail /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
fi
  done
  IFS=$OLD_IFS
  echo $OUTPUT
}

# kill straggler processes after logout (LP: #236210)
pkill -u ${USER}

exit 0

-
FYI- From http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/docs/2.14/configuration.html :

[Bug 236210] Re: Processes remain after log off

2009-01-31 Thread toobuntu
2009-01-31 update - I just filed separate bugs against the following:
libbonobo (Bug #323604)
gvfs (Bug #323606)
evolution-data-server (Bug #323607)
gconf (Bug #323608)

If you still experience this issue with any of these, then please
confirm those bugs so this issue can be fixed properly. In the
meantime, there is an easy workaround listed in those bug reports that I
don't see why it couldn't be adopted by Ubuntu as a default. There
seems to be no harm done, and it solves this problem for all aberrant
processes.

[Bug 236210] Re: Processes remain after log off

2008-08-28 Thread toobuntu
Improvement: Simply add 2 lines to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default and do
_not_ store a backup of Default in the PostSession directory.

$ ls /etc/gdm/PostSession/
Default

$ tail /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default

kill -9 $( ps U ${USER} | grep -v TTY | mawk '{print $1}' ) 2
/tmp/kill-stragglers-gdm.errors
/etc/init.d/gdm restart

exit 0

FYI- From http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/docs/2.14/configuration.html :

When the user terminates his session, the PostSession script will be
run. Again operation is similar to Init, PostLogin and PreSession.
Again the script will be run with root privileges, the slave daemon will

to respond due to an I/O error or similar. Thus, there is no guarantee
that X applications will work during script execution.

[Bug 49594] Re: Bonobo-activation-server sometimes is not killed after session restart, leading to many unexpected problems

2008-08-27 Thread toobuntu
Here's my workaround that, once set up, requires no further intervention
by the sysadmin (me) in our corporate environment (see

[Bug 236210] Re: Processes remain after log off

2008-08-27 Thread toobuntu
Here's my workaround that, once set up, requires no further intervention
by the sysadmin (me) in our corporate environment:

In short, we are creating a shell script to kill all the remaining user
processes after logging out of GNOME, setting that script suid root, and
having gdm call that script upon log out.

$ cat /usr/local/bin/kill-stragglers-auto
#!/bin/bash

# takes 1 argument: the username of the user who logged off

USER=$1
sudo kill -9 $( ps U $USER | grep -v TTY | awk '{print $1}' ) 2
/tmp/kill-stragglers-auto.errors.log
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

$ sudo chmod +s /usr/local/bin/kill-stragglers-auto

$ ls -lh /usr/local/bin/kill-stragglers-auto
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 213 Aug 27 18:32 /usr/local/bin/kill-stragglers-auto

$ cd /etc/gdm/PostSession

$ ls -lh
total 8.0K
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 395 Aug 27 18:30 Default
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 305 Aug 27 18:29 Default.080827.orig

$ tail Default
fi
  done
  IFS=$OLD_IFS
  echo $OUTPUT
}

# the following was added by toobuntu on 080827:
/usr/local/bin/kill-stragglers-auto ${USER}

exit 0

Hope this helps someone!

Discussed here with a workaround: http://www.bxlug.be/en/articles/74

Problem is, that workaround will kill ALL bonobo processes for ALL
USERS. Not the result we're looking for...

BTW, that article is dated 2004, and this is still an issue. Wow.

[Bug 206589] [NEW] nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_interface_get_plugin()

2008-03-25 Thread toobuntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Fully up to date Hardy beta as of 25-Mar-2008. Was burning an iso to CD

the crash).
