[Bug 712687] Re: gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason
LVDS1 reactivates when VGA1 is being dimmed just prior to being powered off as a result of the inactivity timer. At the same time, the gnome panels are moved from VGA1 to LVDS1. Unminimized application windows remain on VGA1. The workaround described in Comment #3 restores things to how they were and how they are supposed to be. ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager gnome panels disappear from the active display when the display is being put to sleep, in the case of a multimonitor setup where the external monitor is active and the built-in laptop display is turned off. [Bug 712687] Re: gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason
Actually, I have some more information. This is with a multimonitor setup: laptop and external VGA. The external monitor was set to on and the laptop display turned to off. I now think this may be an issue triggered, at least, by gnome-power-manager. Screensaver is set to blank, but the timeout for powering off the display is shorter. When I lock the screen and is powers off, this issue does not occur. When the screen is powered off by the inactivity timeout, the laptop screen is reactivated upon the subsequent power on and the gnome-panels appear there. This is annoying and disruptive, especially for a still-supported LTS release. My workaround is to bring up a terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-T, and invoking my dirty fix: $ cat /usr/local/bin/mmfix #! /bin/sh set -e set -u set -x # fix for multimonitor setup on ubuntu lucid xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 xrandr --output LVDS1 --off -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/712687 Title: gnome panels disappear for no apparent reason To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/712687/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 426989] [NEW] unable to set more than default 2 workspaces/viewports
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Set Desktop Effects to none, right-click on the workspace switcher applet and the option is there to set the number of workspaces, but changes are not persistent. Since the advent of compiz, though, I think workspaces are deprecated and (compiz's) viewports are used instead. So... Open gconf-editor/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options, set hsize to more than the default 2, and the change is not persistent. I wonder if the problem is with gconf, as there is at least one other applet (Sticky Notes) which is unable to save persistent preferences. [Bug 426989] Re: unable to set more than default 2 workspaces/viewports

[Bug 426989] Re: unable to set more than default 2 workspaces/viewports
It surprised me, too, because the symptoms described in Bug 423493 only partly matched my experience (spin buttons were not active, but the values were set to 2, not 0), and that's why I filed a separate bug report. Before the update Without desktop effects enabled, if I right-clicked on the workspace switcher applet and went into the preferences, there was a section to set number of workspaces. The spin buttons were indeed disabled as described in Bug 423493, but I was still able to type the number 4 into the textbox. However, the workspace switcher applet still showed only two workspaces and when I would open the prefs again it did not show 4, but the default 2. After the update The spin buttons were active and I could change the number of workspaces by using them or by typing a number into the textbox and hitting the tab key. gconf-editor now shows a 4 for the hsize key under apps/compiz/general/screen0/options. This issue is definitely resolved for me now. -- unable to set more than default 2 workspaces/viewports https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/426989 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 426368] [NEW] [karmic, regression] gnome-display-properties fails to set external 23 Dell monitor at full resolution with Desktop Effects enabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center This may actually be a bug against compiz. On a Sony VAIO VGN-TX650P laptop with integrated Intel 915 graphics, Desktop Effects enabled, default behavior with an external VGA monitor (Dell SP2309W) in karmic is to mirror the displays at the lowest common resolution. When I disabled the mirroring and set the external monitor to its full resolution, the screen goes black (with a small vertical line along the left edge). The same happens with xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 2048x1152. There is no failsafe to return to the prior working resolution. Fortunately, I had a terminal open and was able to use xrandr to return to the prior mode by typing blindly. But I was only able to do that after several prior times of doing a hard poweroff because the mouse was frozen and the whole system also seemed to be frozen. As you can see below, the modes are being correctly picked up, but something goes wrong when full resolution is being applied and compiz is running. Full resolution is successfully applied, with no blank screen, when Desktop Effects are turned off. $ lspci -vvnn | grep VGA Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx- 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03) Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O- Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- BridgeCtl: Parity- SERR- NoISA+ VGA- MAbort- Reset- FastB2B- Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- BridgeCtl: Parity- SERR- ISA- VGA- MAbort- Reset+ 16bInt+ PostWrite+ Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV+ VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV+ VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV+ VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- $ sudo lshw -C system -C display -sanitize computer description: Notebook product: VGN-TX650P vendor: Sony Corporation version: J0015963 serial: [REMOVED] width: 32 bits capabilities: smbios-2.3 dmi-2.3 configuration: boot=normal chassis=notebook uuid=CE36EA00-DF2D-11D4-8523-00014A987C5D *-display:0 description: VGA compatible controller product: Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: p...@:00:02.0 version: 03 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:16 memory:b008-b00f ioport:1800(size=8) memory:c000-cfff(prefetchable) memory:b004-b007 *-display:1 UNCLAIMED description: Display controller product: Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2.1 bus info: p...@:00:02.1 version: 03 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:6400-6407 $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2048 x 1152, maximum 4096 x 4096 VGA1 connected 2048x1152+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 290mm 2048x1152 59.9*+ 1280x1024 75.0 1024x768 75.1 60.0 800x60075.0 60.3 640x480

[Bug 323606] Re: Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins
Well, I have not tested _every_ time a user logs off, but the short answer is yes. Although I no longer have access to the network where I first discovered this issue, my recollection is that processes remain every time a user logs off. If not every time, then nearly every time. The remaining processes do not interfere with subsequent logins every time, though. Only sometimes. I have not yet been able to determine what exactly is preventing a subsequent login, but in a corporate environment this has to be addressed without the need to call a technician, hence the /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default modification. I noticed that most of my other bug reports about this issue were closed, even though I was simply following specific instructions to file those reports. Are the other aberrant processes indeed being looked at so this issue can be fixed? -- Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/323606 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 323582] [NEW] launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of, epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of, epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0 I've had one or two PPA '+archive' pages open in each of epiphany- browser and firefox-3.0 in intrepid for weeks now, although any launchpad page will do. I either lock screen or sleep when away, usually lock screen. CPU would always be at around 45% with those pages loaded, with epiphany-browser and firefox as the top two processes. edge.launchpad.net made no difference as opposed to launchpad.net. Eventually, the CPU would climb all the way up to 90% and sit there for a while, then go up to 100% and crash the browsers. It takes days until the browsers will actually crash, though. Epiphany crashes first; it seems to be significantly more affected by this than does Firefox. With all launchpad pages closed, and all of the 8 browser windows with a sum total of 64 tabs still open, CPU hovers at 10% (+/- 1%). I should add that the machine was otherwise idle most of the time both when the launchpad pages were loaded and after I closed them. Only had mrxvt running screen, but all terminal emulator tabs were sitting idle, and also sometimes ran liferea and pidgin or irssi, pcmanfm at times, and evince and epdfview at times, too. $ lsb_release -dr Description:Ubuntu 8.10 $ apt-cache policy epiphany-browser firefox epiphany-browser: Installed: 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu intrepid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status firefox: Installed: 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 Candidate: 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 Version table: *** 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 0 500 http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu intrepid-updates/main Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com intrepid-security/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.0.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu intrepid/main Packages Release:8.10 $ uname -srvmo Linux 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux $ sudo lshw -sanitize -C system, cpu computer description: Notebook product: VGN-TX650P vendor: Sony Corporation version: J0015963 serial: [REMOVED] width: 32 bits capabilities: smbios-2.3 dmi-2.3 configuration: boot=normal chassis=notebook uuid=CE36EA00-DF2D-11D4-8523-00014A987C5D *-cpu description: CPU product: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.20GHz vendor: Intel Corp. physical id: 3 bus info: c...@0 version: 6.13.8 slot: N/A size: 1200MHz capacity: 1200MHz width: 32 bits clock: 100MHz capabilities: fpu fpu_exception wp vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe nx up bts est tm2 cpufreq $ lspci -vvnn | grep VGA | grep Intel 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03) ** Affects: epiphany-browser (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- launchpad causes high CPU utilization with, and eventually crashes of, epiphany-browser and firefox-3.0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/323582 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to epiphany-browser in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

** Description changed: Binary package hint: gvfs-fuse This bug is being filed pursuant to the instructions of Sebastien Bacher, who advised: the issue is not a gdm one, you should rather open bugs for buggy servers which don't have a bug open yet (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/236210/comments/10). + + [Similar bugs filed against: libbonobo (Bug #323604), evolution-data- + server (Bug #323607), and gconf (Bug #323608)] After logging out of a GNOME session, processes owned by the now-logged- out user still remain and interfere with subsequent logons. e.g. toobu...@uw1:~$ w 11:20:37 up 2 days, 20:29, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.16, 0.17 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT toobuntu pts/0 uw5.local Fri17 0.00s 0.22s 0.00s w toobu...@uw1:~$ ps U ed PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 20305 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 11 It seems that these processes are called by GDM, so a GDM restart gets us to a clean slate again. But these processes should, in and of themselves, know to terminate upon user log off. See a fuller discussion re: cleaning of GNOME processes at logoff at the link I posted here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- session/+bug/49594/comments/33 WORKAROUND - have GDM kill all processes owned by the user logging out by adding a line to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default $ ls /etc/gdm/PostSession/ Default $ tail /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default fi done IFS=$OLD_IFS echo $OUTPUT } # kill straggler processes after logout (LP: #236210) pkill -u ${USER} exit 0 - FYI- From http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/docs/2.14/configuration.html : When the user terminates his session, the PostSession script will be run. Again operation is similar to Init, PostLogin and PreSession. Again the script will be run with root privileges, the slave daemon will block and the $USER environment variable will contain the name of the user who just logged out and $DISPLAY will be set to the display the user used, however note that the X server for this display may already be dead and so you shouldn't try to access it. Also $X_SERVERS environmental variable is set and this points to a fake generated X servers file for use with the sessreg accounting application. Note that the PostSession script will be run even when the display fails to respond due to an I/O error or similar. Thus, there is no guarantee that X applications will work during script execution. - $ lsb_release -dr Description:Ubuntu 8.04.2 Release:8.04 $ uname -srvmo Linux 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 27 18:44:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux $ apt-cache policy libbonobo2-0 gvfs-fuse evolution-data-server libgconf2-4 libbonobo2-0: Installed: 2.22.0-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 2.22.0-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 2.22.0-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status gvfs-fuse: Installed: 0.2.5-0ubuntu3 Candidate: 0.2.5-0ubuntu3 Version table: *** 0.2.5-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.2.3-0ubuntu4 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages evolution-data-server: Installed: 2.22.3-0ubuntu3 Candidate: 2.22.3-0ubuntu3 Version table: *** 2.22.3-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages libgconf2-4: Installed: 2.22.0-0ubuntu3 Candidate: 2.22.0-0ubuntu3 Version table: *** 2.22.0-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status -- Processes remain after log off, sometimes preventing further graphical logins https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/323606 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 236210] Re: Processes remain after log off
2009-01-31 update - I just filed separate bugs against the following: libbonobo (Bug #323604) gvfs (Bug #323606) evolution-data-server (Bug #323607) gconf (Bug #323608) If you still experience this issue with any of these, then please confirm those bugs so this issue can be fixed properly. In the meantime, there is an easy workaround listed in those bug reports that I don't see why it couldn't be adopted by Ubuntu as a default. There seems to be no harm done, and it solves this problem for all aberrant processes. -- Processes remain after log off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236210 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 206589] [NEW] nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_interface_get_plugin()
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Fully up to date Hardy beta as of 25-Mar-2008. Was burning an iso to CD with Brasero, CD ejected and Brasero asked me to reinsert it in order to verify the md5sum. When a CD is inserted, Nautilus pops open a window.
