I have same issues on Karmic.
Evolution freezes on start, killing evolution-alarm-notify makes it work until
I try to use Calendar. Gnome panel freezes after clicking Clock applet.
Deleting ~/.evolution fixes the problem, but that doesn't seem like permanent
solution.

Evolution hangs when I
Just noting that while it never went away for me in Hardy, it is fixed
since upgrading to Intrepid.

Ubuntu 7.04 updated, Evolution 2.10.1, i386
I have had a similar behavior today and I solved it by moving my
mail/local/Inbox* files to another dir when evo and all helper programs
were *not* running, starting evo, and then moving them back while it

I have been seeing this sometimes with evolution in Hardy, before and
after release, currently with version 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu2. Usually it
happens immediately after reboot and logging in: evolution hangs when
started through the session manager. It hangs right at the start of
listing the mail
I just had this with evolution 2.21.92 in Hardy. Killing evolution-
alarm-notify helped.

PLAIN ENGLISH SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM! (hopefully)
I just had this same problem. I solved it by opening the correct mailbox
then deleting the message that caused it to hang like this:
enter the following on the command line (I used gedit, basically you need a
text editor):
I am now seeing something very similar, possibly related. I have evolution set
up with a pop mailbox, and it currently (at a result of catching up/backing up
to local) has a very large inbox - 64Mb. It hung and became unresponsive at
100% a few days ago, and now does so every time I start it. I
CLI Output when run (may be unrelated) is:

More information:
It is something that has happened to the profile. If I move away the .evolution
directory, and start it (thus forcing it to create a new profile) I do not see
a hang. Now I do have important information I want to retain in the old profile
so if anyone has ideas about migrating
Since I really needed my email, I used RLTH and hand scanned where the
problem was, as well as plenty of searching. I thined down the mailbox
file removing a lot of rubbish. However, this had no effect. The one
thing that helped was removing the CMETA file as suggested on defect
