This issue appeared for me after upgrading to 14.04.
I had some driver issues after the upgrade and had to reinstall them.
After that, steam gave me the no direct glx error and games would not start.
The procedure described solved the issue.

Same crap with the shortcut keys as in 12.04. SUPER keys don't work,
neither does CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE and neither does CTRL+ALT+*.
