This morning I got the same blank screen problem with the fglrx driver.
By switching with CTRL-ALT-F1 I was able to get a console where I saw
parts of characters of the login text on the screen, indented by 80% to
the left (similar to the radeon driver).
After rebooting, everthing was fine again.

Is the problem only about having messages in syslog or are you actually
not able to print? Do these messages cause any pop-ups on your screen?
If you still can print and get no pop-ups it is a minor problem.
The profile is not violated by cupsd, but most probably by the
/usr/lib/cups/backend/smb C
I occasionally have the same issue. As already mentioned by Tom Lianza above,
for me the issue happens when I enter the client screen using Synergy. When the
issue occurs, I always observe the thin row of vertical triangles as mentioned
by clickwir.

This indeed looks like the kernel is at fault. I don't know much
bluetooth (I'm more into the audio side of things), so
for desktop line out and headphone connected to different audio output
nodes 0x03 and 0x04
this allow you to play different audio to line out and headphone
but this feature usually should be disabled for notebook

Apologises, I am not a super expert but I suffer this VNC BUG after
Ubuntu TLS 14.04 upgrade.
Unfortunately to me does not work dconf > desktop > gnome > remote-access >

Same here. Lenovo ThinkPad x230 with Intel HD 4000. I can enter runlevel
1 and restart lightdm to recover, though. Also, LightLocker and Power
Manager settings do not seem to work properly anymore (it locks after
the same amoutn of time regardless of the settings).
