So, I finally had the time to test Xubuntu with the dock and indeed, it
works the way I want it to. Almost, that is, since when I resume work
after a suspend, 4 identical windows open offering display settings. So

I'm also experiencing this, and I also have a 4k monitor, although not
the same model as David. Mine is an LG 27UD58-B. It's hooked up to a KVM
switch and might be taking longer to come up than is normal, but I
haven't really noticed that.

You can also do all of the commands from the rescue mode.
What is concerning is that this major issue is still left untouched. Is
there anything we can do to help?

The computer was otherwise running though.
I ssh-ed from another computer to the problem computer
to execute the suggested commands.
If on a home network you can login to your router with a
web browser to get the IP address for your problem

This has worked in Unity for many years so it's certenly not impossible.
Now I don't know the code of neither Unity nor Gnome and it may well be
so that Gnome can not support it but the concept itself is very
possible.

Hence my confusion, llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 128 bits) with the radeon driver
is reported. And CAPE VERDE with the ati driver. Why would the wrong
driver show proper input with glxinfo?. Either way still shows wrong
graphics card all together.
