I did the edit of lightdm.conf and that caused problems (no window
manager?!?). I then switched to gdm and everything worked. After
switching back to lightdm everything still worked. I suspect a problem
caused by an update.

This has enraged me enough times to file it.
A common scenario for me is to want to tweet something and paste a URL. I don't
always have the URL pre-copied when I start writing, so I tend to alt+tab to
the browser to get it. When I do this, I loose the update status window
