know what a third party installer installed, and it's the responsibility of the
installer to remove what it installed on the system.

I have the same issue, on Ubuntu 17.10. I solved it by moving the
download-to directory to home. My "Desktop" is a symlink to
DropBox/Desktop, which is a DropBox, with that may entail.
In summary - my suspicion is that it is DropBox to blame.
