addresses, that should be another bug too.
Files: oops, sorry, had overlooked this.
IPv6: I have read about problems, maybe just guesses, but see e.g. _ck_ in

Yes, that is all expected that way. Furthermore, in FF17.0.1 (and FF17), you
should be able to add new cookie exceptions for other sites which also should
be remembered by Firefox after a restart.

Windows 7) - cookies permissions persist across Firefox after restart -
used the STR from Comment 13, both cookies (schafmail.de and
www.openstreetmap.org) are listed under Cookies Exceptions in Options 
Privacy  History.

Based on this and on Comment 33 setting tracking flag for Firefox 17 to
verified.

  Binary package hint: nautilus

  Under system-preferences-file management, the media tab does not
  detect a lot of the installed applications.

  For instance, on a standard hardy alpha 4 install, both Music Player and 
Photos are disabled, with the text No applications installed, despite 
Rhythmbox and F-spot being installed on the system. 
  Additionally, under the other media section, it's not possible to select 
brasero to be the default for blank cd disc. 

  This tab seems to duplicate most of the functionality from Removable
  Drives and Media, and the settings in it don't match up with what's
  set in the removable drives and media app. I think it should probably
  be hidden in the standard hardy install to prevent confusion.

  On occasion, network-manager fails to get an UMTS network connection,
  and quickly refuses all future attempts to use the connection.
  Reconfiguration of the interface (exactly the same as before) will fix
  it; seems like nm may mistake a transient error for a permanent one or
  something. Even removing the connection description from
  /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections and copying the exact same file
  back, and attempting a reconnect will fix this particular situation.

For the Android case, in the newest version, it requires manually

  This is a feature request.

  It would be nice if Network Manager could be configured such that it
  won't automatically attempt to use new network devices attached to the
  system.

  Here's the reasoning.  My team manages a large fleet of enterprise
  desktops.  We've had a number of cases where a user plugs a USB NIC
  into their computer, and Network Manager helpfully configures the new
  network interface and runs dhclient on it.  And if the DHCP response
  is answered, you get a new default route, new resolv.conf, etc.  In a
  couple cases this was caused by plugging in an Android phone that had
  USB tethering turned on, and I think we even had one case where
  plugging in a USB GPS did this.  None of the cases involved the user
  actually intending to use the device as a network interface.

  We could blacklist the usbnet module, but there are legitimate cases
  where we want to allow USB networking.  It would be so much better if
  we could get Network Manager not to use these new devices that have
  shown up until the user configures them.

but choosing an interface to activate doesn't do anything for either
wifi or mobile networks. Not even a visible attempt is made to connect,
nor is a failure reported.

Killing nm-applet and restarting it is a functional workaround (and thus
is also logging out and back in), so it's clearly the applet and not
network manager itself that's the problem. While there is a workaround,
this is likely to be very frustrating for users, especially those less
likely to come up with the kill/restart workaround.

Using the standard Unity interface, if that matters.

if I'm using the Nouveau driver with my graphics board (Geforce GT430),
standby mode (a.k.a. suspend-to-ram) does not work.

Going into standby mode itself works, but when I turn my PC back on, the
monitor shows just a kind of colorful noise with the usual mouse
cursor (the cursor itself is displayed properly). Sometimes it's
possible to move the cursor a bit, but the system can't be used anymore
and has to rebooted with the Alt+Print+b keycombo.

This also happens on Quantal when I use the Nouveau driver.

With the propritary Nvidia driver, standby mode works fine.

  A common usage pattern of mine is to download PDF's through Firefox by
  clicking the link and selecting Open with, on occasion I'd like to
  keep the PDF's so use the File-Save a Copy As menu item in Evince to
  save a copy in my home directory.

  The files are copied with the same permissions they have when
  downloaded by Firefox to tmp (r) - this leads to the protected
  badge icon being displayed over the file in Nautilus and a file which
  is less accessible (from a privileges perspective) than others created
  and saved to my home directory (with the default permissions of rw-
  rw-r--).

  I think it would be good to remain consistent with the default
  permissions when effectively creating a new document rather than
  maintaining the more restrictive permissions of the temporary file.

   * Enables SolidFill on fermi and kepler cards, increasing performance 
slightly.

   * hover over some urls and icons, likely corruption already occurs at this

     the more you mover over the more it shows.
   * This wil not fix it completely, only make it occur less, see xorg-server 
below for the real fix.

   * This should be a safe fix, since it simply enables some code which was 
already created specifically for these cards, and with some testing it appears 
to work just fine.
   * I expect no regressions, but in the worst case this would result in 
garbage being sent to the card, which may cause it to do an unexplained hang or 
(more likely) errors in dmesg and worse glitches since nothing is being shown 
any more.

   * Doing solid fill in hardware is a pretty nice speedup for those who use 
valgrind to test code, and also seems to increase responsitivity a little on 
nouveau without valgrind, since it safes 2 memcpy's on host, 2 memcpy's on gpu, 
and a memset.

  
  For the xorg-server sru:

  [IMPACT]
   * Fallback to exa with gradients and solid pictures results in visual 
corruption,
     because sometimes the source or mark pixmaps from previous operations are 
used.
     This results in visual corruption when those fallbacks are triggered.
     The xxv-nouveau fix helps slightly because it disables fallback for solid 
fills,
     but gradients are still not handled so it still triggers it.

  [TESTCASE]
   * Start ubuntu software center on a geforce card that has exa acceleration 
enabled.
   * Highlight mouse over items
   * Notice display corruption.

  [Regression Potential]
   * The patch has been reviewed by upstream, but is not yet included (upstream 
can be slow). The most likely regression would be that suddenly other 
operations start failing to draw correctly, or worst case cause crashes but I 
do not think it is likely.

  there are several serious graphic and text corruptions on Quantal with
  nouveau drivers (which are used by default).

  To reproduce:
  - Boot a Quantal live system or a fresh installation
  - Start software-center.
  - Move the mouse in its window or click anything.
  Result: Text and some graphics become massively corrupted (See also attached 
screenshots and short demo video).

  I have seen this kind of corruption so far in software-center,
  ubiquity-slideshow (during installation) and one time on filename text
  field of gtk-filechooser.

  Booting the system with nomodeset seems to make the problem go away,
  as well as installing the propritary Nvidia drivers.

  Basically, if a user hits the power button and clicks suspend, or
  clicks on the shutdown icon then selects suspend, the request is never
  processed and the laptop does nothing.

  IF SUPPORT IS NOT WORKING (the OS detects a problem with the acpi
  configuration, or with the suspend feature), IT SHOULD BE GRAYED OUT
  AND DISABLED.

I've noticed the high CPU core usage with *any* progress bar activity,
not just the above example.  For example, on this latest build, the
progress bar in the lower right is attempting to complete while I type
this bug report, I presume while it indexes for the first time (first
time with /this/ build) my inbox,(8000 messages).  Meanwhile, my CPU
graph shows one core in full usage.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Here is one method to get a status bar

1. Open Thunderbird.
2. Clear your password
3. Send a message
4. Type in an incorrect password
5. Note the CPU usage when it gives you the SMTP error dialog.

If it matters, I'm using IMAP, but again, I doubt that's the issue.  I think 
it's the scroll bar code.
Actual Results:  
When any progress bar is visible, a processor goes berserk.

Expected Results:  
When any progress bar is visible, the CPU usage caused by the progress bar 
should be pert near zero.

These bugs may be relevant, or may turn out to be duplicates.  I
couldn't quite tell from the descriptions:

  A common usage pattern of mine is to download PDF's through Firefox by
  clicking the link and selecting Open with, on occasion I'd like to
  keep the PDF's so use the File-Save a Copy As menu item in Evince to
  save a copy in my home directory.

  The files are copied with the same permissions they have when
  downloaded by Firefox to tmp (r) - this leads to the protected
  badge icon being displayed over the file in Nautilus and a file which
  is less accessible (from a privileges perspective) than others created
  and saved to my home directory (with the default permissions of rw-
  rw-r--).

  I think it would be good to remain consistent with the default
  permissions when effectively creating a new document rather than
  maintaining the more restrictive permissions of the temporary file.

Firefox 3.0 has extremely slow Ajax/Javascript performance (I'm not sure
exactly what).  Probably CSS related.

#1  Gmail scrolls very slowly (compare this by switching gmail to HTML
version at the bottom of inbox)

#2 Javascript images open/close/transition extremely slow
examples:
 http://www.shacknews.com/  (images near the top of page, when 
transitioning, bring FF3.0 to its knees)
 http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/ssotd/#latest
(images opening and switching to next one)
 http://www.transmissionbt.com/screenshots.php  (opening 
and closing images are very choppy)

  There are many more, those are just a few.

I have both enabled and disabled Compiz but the problem is still there.
I am not a web developer and can't pinpoint exactly what sort of code is
causing the extreme slowness but I have tested it on multiple machines
to make sure.  I have compared it to my Windows XP dual boot box and the
difference is night and day so it is definitely a Linux issue.  Also on
a Mac OS 10.4 machine its noticeably faster.

Is similar but only deals with Gmail, it is now known to be widespread issue.  
With performance this slow Firefox 3.0 beta should never have been the default 
browser. Unless its just the few machines I've used of course.

  I'm currently doing an update-manager upgrade from Gutsy to 8.04 and
  the setting up of the texlive-lang-danish (and other) packages is
  taking virtually forever due to an infinite recursion in directory
  traversal.  I also experienced this when recently updating a Feisty
  system to Gutsy.  The precise command being run is 'kpsewhich
  language.dat'.  When you strace it, you see it traversing through
  directories like this:

  PID 32415 is the kpsewhich process itself.  When I kill the process to
  get things to move along, dpkg leaves the otuput of the command in
  /tmp/fmtutil.mktemp which says, fmtutil: no format depends on `//'

  So it seems like something is using an include/dependency path of //
  instead of /usr/share/texmf or something sane.

Alright, here are the logs.  One with default settings (in particular,
tsched=1) and one with tsched=0.  In both cases I ran arecord -f cd
-d 3 test-mic.wav followed by aplay test-mic.wav.  (To verify that
the recordings is distorted with tsched=1 but not with tsched=0.)  I
also attach the difference of the equivalent logs without timestampts
(since they muddy up the diff).

  Gnome Screensaver should handle expired password tokens.  Currently it does
  not. It just unlocks screen, so in case you're using kerberos -  your 
credentials cache stays expired and you need to manually change your password 
or logout and then login again (lightdm, gdm, etc. do handle expired password 
tokens).
  Actually, there is a mainstream bugreport with patch solving the problem, but 
it seems noone is interested in solving this issue:

  The patch provided by Brian C. Huffman solves the issue and is compatible 
with today's GS behavior (it can be emulated using special pam config, see 
comment 9 there).
  Both solutions using this patch (with and without passwd required 
pam_permit.so) tested by me with oneiric's gnome-screensaver-3.2.0-ubuntu1 and 
work as expected.
  This is really nice improvement for big corporate environments. So, It would 
be nice to apply this patch even if it's not in upstream 
  yet.

  Duplicated panels using separate x screens

  I'm trying to use separate x screens on nvidia card with 3 monitors.
  I'm expecting one top panel + one bottom panel on each screen, but
  instead i have got all panels on one screen.

  Restarting gnome panel (gnome-panel --replace) it will create two
  extra (blank) panel pairs on same screen, but new applets will be
  added on first panel pair. Screenshot ilustrating problem can be found

  I tried to manualy set screen key (org-gnome-gnome-
  panel-layout-toplevels-top-panel-screen) on wich screen panel
  should appear with dconf Editor. But restarting gnome-panel that key

  Downloaded gnome-panel source code (apt-get source gnome-panel), spend
  some time trying to find problem, and probably i found it in file
  panel-toplevel.c.

  These lines are responsible for resetting screen key. It will reset
  screen to default if currenct screen exist, but its not what we want.

  After compiling and installing new package, gnome panel works as
  expected.

I was able to reproduce the issue on a fresh installation, using VirtualBox.
- install Ubuntu 12.10
- add new disk then use Gparted to create partition table + format (e.g. 
/dev/sdb1)
- create a folder /Ma Musique and add it into /etc/fstab as mount point for 
/dev/sb1
- reboot

  Note the  \40 for the space, as it should according to man fstab.

Some input devices provide information on proximity. For the X evdev module,
X events are sent only while the device is in proximity. However, the kernel
may send updates on the location of interaction while the device is not in
proximity. One example is when a touch is lightly in contact with a resistive
touchscreen. The kernel is sending coordinates, but X evdev doesn't pass them
on until the kernel says the interaction has passed a pressure threshold and is
now in good contact with the screen.

When the device goes into proximity, the last X and Y values at any
time must be used. These values may be sent in the same packet as the
in proximity data, or the values may have been sent while out of
proximity. The change here checks for each valuator value if it has
been set in the current packet along with the proximity change. If
not, then it checks if there was a value sent while out of proximity.
This ensures that each value is correctly handled, whereas before the
change only the values set along side the proximity change would be
propagated through X.

Without this change, a user may touch one location of a touchscreen,
then touch a second location, and the X server will see the first
touch and then a second touch which begins at the location of the
first touch and is immediately dragged to the location of the second
touch. With the change, the X events are set properly.

The change fixes a logic error in the original masked valuators code
that I wrote and landed upstream. I believe the risk of regression to
be very low as the fix is self contained and easy to verify.

On Lucid, the touch screen of my Latitude 2100 is no longer handled by
evtouch, but some other touchscreen driver having the following bug:

When I press my finger agains the screen, the expected behaviour is that the
cursor clicks at the location where my finger is.
However, it clicks at the location where the pointer currently is and
_afterwards_ moves to the location of my finger, what of course results in a
selection between the original and the new position.

How can I find out which touchscreen driver is currently active?
I'd like to have a look at it.

xorg.conf with full support. It works on ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10.

attachment) I am unable to get any remote printers from our university print 
server. 
  That is, trying to print from Firefox, only the default PDF printer is shown. 
I would have expected a large number of queues to be displayed. 
  I have consulted out sysadmin to obtain more information about the server -- 
apparently it runs CUPS 1.2.7 on SuSE.
  Please find attached the requested nmap output (I had to remove the server IP 
and hostname by the sysadmin's request).
  I have also asked the sysadmin for a server error log, which I have also 
attached to this bug report. It shows my unsuccessful access attempts.

  The same setup worked fine in 12.04. Did I miss something?

  ** Impact of bug **
  The legacy inhibit API was removed from gnome-screensaver, as the 
gnome-session inhibit API is the preferred way to inhibit the screensaver. The 
legacy API required applications to poll the screensaver regularly to 
simulate user activity. The new API requires applications to register 
inhibitors, which will exist until they are removed, or the application exits.

  xdg-screensaver is used by a lot of desktop-neutral applications
  including games and VLC, and this wraps the legacy gnome-screensaver
  API in GNOME. This means that screensaver inhibiting is currently
  broken in GNOME for any application which hasn't been ported to the
  new inhibit API.

  ** Description of changes **
  The existing legacy API still exists in gnome-screensaver, but is currently 
just a stub. I've added code to this which resets the IDLETIME counter, by 
simulating fake keypresses using XTEST. The code is already used in 
gnome-session and totem, and this method of resetting IDLETIME is also used in 
other applications.

  Resetting IDLETIME will prevent gnome-session from setting the session
  idle (which prevents the screensaver from activating), and will also
  prevent gnome-power-manager from dimming the display.

  ** Regression potential **
  Minimal. The additional functionality is quite self-contained, and the 
existing interface doesn't work at all anyway. The chosen method of resetting 
IDLETIME is already used.

  ** TEST CASE **
   Using the following versions of gnome-screensaver in turn, perform the steps 
detailed below.

  PLEASE MAKE SURE that you run killall gnome-screensaver  gnome-
  screensaver after installing the new version, to ensure that you are
  testing the new version.

  1) Open gnome-screensaver-preferences, set the timeout to 1 minute and check

the script is still running. If you run gnome-power-manager --verbose in a 
separate terminal, you will notice the following sequence of messages each time 
the IDLETIME counter is reset by gnome-screensaver, which you won't see with 
the old version:

  I have attached a external monitor to my laptop. When I my the mouse
  from the primary display (my laptop screen) to the secondary display
  (external monitor), the mouse cursor image gets duplicated.

  On the primary screen it freezes its last location (so moving the mouse more 
quickly, makes sure that the mouse image is clearly visible) and on the 
secondary screen it keeps on performing as it should.
  When I move the mouse back to the primary screen, the duplicated mouse image 
disappears and everything works like normal again.
  Funny thing: when the duplication is 'active' the frozen mouse, still changes 
it image (pointing finger, 'text thingy', resizing arrows, etc) when I my mouse 
(on the secondary screen) is hovering over elements that makes the image change.

  Since Ubuntu 12.10 I use the xserver-xorg-video-radeon package, as
  fglrx does not support my ATI video card (HD 3650) anymore. So I do
  not know whether the problem is also existing pre-12.10.

  REGRESSION POTENTIAL: Very low. This just adds locking around the
  reference handling to avoid race conditions with concurrent access.
  pyglib_gil_state_{ensure,release}() is used all over the place in
  pygobject, but it was forgotten in this particular function.

  SRU TEST CASE: This is rather hard to reproduce, as it is a race
  condition in a multi-threaded program. As Daniel can reproduce it
  rather well, I suggest to ask him to verify the SRU.

  also has a test case.

I'd also like to confirm this. I just realized this when attempting to
use the left-to-right  right-to-left buttons. They simply don't appear
in the formatting toolbar  do not appear when checked to be visible!

I am using LibreOffice Version 3.6.0.2 (Build ID: 360m1(Build:102)) on
Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS with kernel 3.2.0-33-generic

no solution for the live/submitted distinction, despite an application
developer asking specifically how to handle it. I'm not an engineer, and
I see no user benefit from switching to GtkSearchEntry. I'm just
explaining how the design would need fixing if anyone else wanted to do
that. :-)

Whether local searches with GNOME3 are usually live searches is not
really relevant, for three reasons. First, whether it's local or not
isn't relevant: USC searches are currently local, but may become
Internet-based in future, while still being live. Second, Gnome 3 has
few useful (and hardly any best-in-class) applications, so Ubuntu will
indefinitely ship applications from elsewhere, including applications
with search functions that can't reasonably be live. And third,
notwithstanding your sterling work on the Ubuntu Gnome Remix, I'm sure
you understand that the vast majority of people who use Gnome 3 software
will never encounter the Gnome name -- so we can't reasonably use that
to establish a mental model for how search fields behave.

As I understand it, neither Firefox (XUL) nor LibreOffice (VCL) use GTK
at the widget level. And even if they did, GtkSearchEntry doesn't seem
featureful enough for Firefox to be able to use it anyway.

groups (arbitrarily, as far as I can tell), each group being sorted 
independently. See the attached screenshot which is quite explicit.

group put at the end.
- This grouping didn't affect sorting by any of the other columns I had set 
up.

  This is certainly not a major issue, it is just puzzling and could be
  an inconvenience if the first group was larger.

Bug description:
  This bug is a long standing one for me in Dapper but it becomes more
  and more frequent in recent Dapper beta.

  Unfortunatly, there's no way I can reproduce it.

  
  Symptoms : the mouse buttons (all of them) stop working without any reason. 
Seems to happen mainly when surfing with Epiphany but not only.

  
  In fact, it's just like my mouse was in another dimension. I use focus 
follow pointer and it doesn't work anymore. I can see my cursor and moving it 
: the system just ignore it. No more click, no more focus following pointer.

  Also, the keyboard keeps working perfectly. By using shortcut keys, I
  can continue working normally.

  The workaround to have the mouse again is hopefully very simple :  use
  the change desktop shortcut. The alt-tab shortcut is also working.
  Yes, it's strange, but they are the only two shortcuts I've found that
  bypass this bug ! Strange isn't it ?

  My mouse is a PS/2 Logitech MX310. The workaround seems to be the
  proof that it's not an hardware failure.

Thanks for looking at this bug.  I did edit by copy and paste from an exec that 
works to add the commands for example
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid LAUREL
which works fine from the xterminal and did work from startup applications.  
The reason for this command is the automatic connection on raring automatically 
disconnects hidden wireless WPA which is another bug #1017738.  Hardware works 
fine on 12.04.1 both 12.10 and 13.04 have nm problem connecting to hidden 
wireless on boot.
Since it didn't work from startup I issue it from terminal and works fine.

Now that iwconfig works fine from terminal and did work from startup
applications.  I've verified the entry several times.  Is there any way
to verify that the startup applications are ever issued?

The other startup command entered by edit by copy and paste from an exec that 
works into startup commands:
xrandr --newmode 1366x768_60.00   85.25  1366 1440 1576 1784  768 771 781 798 
-hsync +vsync
the reason for this is the vga external monitor where there's no way for ubuntu 
to know what the resolution should be.  Again this was working from startup on 
raring until the latest updates.  
Since it didn't work from startup I issue it from terminal and works fine.

Attached is xsession-errors.  Some usual unity complaints no failures.

Initially this was a question that I posed on Launchpad.  I was asked to
put the content of .xsessionssomething into a pastebin, as well as the
output in a terminal when I started Thunderbird in the terminal.  The
output in the terminal had the error messages for Glib calls.  Nikki from
Ubuntu Launchpad told me to close the case with this solved my problem,
and to make a bug report about the Glib problem.

I have.

BTW, there appears to be a new version of Ubuntu.  How can I upgrade to
that?  Maybe that will solve the problem?

  With the latest version of RB 2.97-0ubuntu2, the interface freezes at launch.
  I didn't have this bug with the previous version 2.97-0ubuntu1 but it's a bit 
strange because it seems the change between the two versions only concerns 
'audiocd' plugin (and I have this bug with or without this plugin)

  If I launch it with this command, I don't have any problem:
    $ rhythmbox --rhythmdb-file=test.db

  Maybe my (huge) database is corrupted but if I launch RB with the
  debug mode (-d), I don't have this bug (but it takes a few time before
  being ready to use).
