remains text file instead of shell script and won't launch on double-click

Title:
Executables on desktop won't launch on double-click

Status in gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Using a text editor, create a file on your Desktop that you intend to
be a shell script. When you save it initially, it won't be executable
(unless your text editor is too smart for its own good), so it will be
displayed on the desktop as a text file.

Now do "chmod +x" on the file in a terminal window.

It's still displayed on the desktop as a text file, and you still
  can't execute it.

Now mv it out of your desktop and into /tmp, and then mv it back onto
your desktop. Now the icon is displayed as a shell script and can be
  double-clicked.

The icon for a file on the desktop should turn from text file to
executable script as soon as the file itself turns from text file to
  executable script.

Bug description:
Create a shell script with a space in its name in /tmp. Make sure the
script is executable. Mv it into ~/Desktop. (You have to do it this
way rather than creating it directly on the desktop because of the
other bug I just filed.) Try to double-click on it. You will get an

blurred screens. Pressing the firefox icon open up browser fine and
all seems to work. The display is different from what I gotten use to,
but it seems ok. If I close, I get the shaky, very annoying display.

I wish I could give you more helpful info. I tried some stuff on the
terminal that I got readying internet. I think I must have had another
"display" stuffed on top of my original. I don't know how so I am just
guessing. I did not have the "dash"??? on the left before. Now, I do.

I am 78 years old and I choose Ubuntu because I like it. I do not do a
lot of "programing" type of stuff. Ubutnu Mate is what I was using, I
  think.

Hope there is something that helps you. Thank you so much for your
help. Ubuntu is a good system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841190] Re: Xorg crashes when trying to insert letter with accent using Onboard

2019-08-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Xorg crashes when trying to insert letter with accent using Onboard

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Using Onboard, when trying to type a letter with accent, as á or à,

  extremely common.

  touch screen:

  Driver "evdev"
  Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false"

Bug description:
When I am in any program, mostly happen in Blender since I spend most time in
it, PC freezes and becomes unresponsive and I need to hold down Power button to
shut it down.
After booting I get send report pop up but it doesn't work it doesn't give me
additional dialog window with information to finalize report. Anyway I found
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.122.crash so I figured that maybe gnome is problem and not
blender which I thought at first (I reported to them but got ignore because of
hardware)
This happens when I don't have any complex object in Blender or other
software (browsing etc) it just happens randomly withouth any specific steps
and I am not 100% sure but I think it only happens if laptop was in sleep mode
(lid closed).
If you need any more info let me know.

I am running Ubuntu 18.04.04 up to date and problem stated a couple weeks
ago.

Title:
wifi connection keeps being dropped: 18.04 on Lenovo IdeaPad

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Xubuntu 18.04 installed on a new Lenovo IdeaPad 330S; system is up to date (I
run Software Updater pretty much daily).
  lsb_release -rd tells me:
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
  Release: 18.04

I am connected to the internet via a wireless router and although the
desktop panel network icon tells me I am always connected to the
router, every so often the actual internet connection stops working --
as in, I am connected to the router, but websites won't load or
Firefox will say I am offline.

If I click the network icon on the desktop panel and uncheck and then
re-check "Enable Networking", the computer reconnects to the router
and the internet connection works again, at least for a while.

I cannot discern any specific pattern to this behaviour; it seems to
happen randomly -- but often enough to be really disruptive.

Other devices connected to the same router (two Android phones and an
older laptop running Linux Mint) do not have this problem.

EDIT: Even when I do stay connected, the connected speed is often
  ridiculously slow, at 1 Mb/s -- as opposed to e.g. 144 Mb/s on another
device connected to the same router. Restarting the network as above
seems to solve the issue for a short while -- although I'm not sure,
since clicking on "Connection Information" then lists "Speed" as
"Unknown". After a while it then goes back to "1 Mb/s".

My apologies if I didn't report this correctly or left out anything
important; I am just an end user and not an expert. Please let me know
if I need to provide any further information.

Sorry, it was my fault. Correct #5, it should be "echo 1 >" instead of
"cat 1 >". Anyway you generated the alsa-info.txt with coeff in the #7
and #8.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841354] Re: Show a "Confirm" dialog window when deleting files

2019-08-25 Thread Chris Guiver
Just a brief note, I had a play on 18.04 LTS using GNOME and straight
after deleting a file I was offered a message "blah deleted (undo)"
which is in my opinion equivalent to the delete message anyway. Same
response as in 19.10 (which has a later gnome/nautilus)

What you want is what I found in `pcmanfm` (LXDE's File Manager) so
switching file managers is always an option - but that's a support
issue.

Thank you @seb128

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841387] Re: GDM hangs on boot with 5.3rc5 when using wayland

2019-08-25 Thread Troels Liebe Bentsen
This bug can be closed, one could argue that the kernel could handle
this a bit prettier as the -1 options is setting the firmware loading to
auto so a fallback to not loading the firmware would be ok.

Found out it's unrelated to Wayland or GDM, I was using the
"i915.enable_guc=-1" to load the Intel power management firmware, this
causes the DRM initialization to fail if the needed version is missing
and the firmware was updated in 5.3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1724572] Re: vino-server crashed with SIGSEGV in _XSend()

2019-08-25 Thread Julien ROBIN
Hi,
Using chromium for doing a fast.com speedtest, while the test is running,
clicking with the left button anywhere outside the chromium window and you will
get the crash.
Sometimes just visiting fast.com, typing enter, same with speedtest.net

I'm using vino on a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950 with last version of RealVNC
Viewer as client, and headless configuration using "edid.bin" file and
xorg.conf file.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1836123] Re: Can Not Click Using Mouse Keys

2019-08-25 Thread Noble Mushtak
I know this is a late response, but I figured out the issue. Apparently,
when I updated to Ubuntu 18.04, the update was stopped in the middle and
did not finish properly. I ran `sudo dpkg --configure -a` and rebooted,
which fixed the Mouse Keys clicking problem. However, I am not exactly
sure what package was the problem.

Also, the mouse keys was a feature in the standard Settings; it was not
something I custom-configured.

Title:
Can Not Click Using Mouse Keys

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 18.04, I am using Mouse Keys to simulate mouse movements
using my keyboard. However, although moving my mouse works fine, for
some reason, I can not click using Mouse Keys. Usually, when I press
the 5 on the numpad when I have Mouse Keys enabled, it causes a left
click, but now, pressing the 5 on the numpad simply does nothing.

For your information, this computer is actually Ubuntu GNOME, and it
stopped working once I updated from Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 to Ubuntu GNOME
  18.04.

I am sorry this is not much information, but I am not sure what debug
information you need to fix this problem. If you tell me what debug
info you need, I would be happy to give it to you. Thanks for the
  help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841330] Re: [HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-ba1xx, Realtek ALC295, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2019-08-25 Thread anoopjohn
Here is the alsa-info for the case where I booted into windows, shutdown
completely, then boot into Ubuntu. Sound is working

Same permissions issues exist for writing the alsa parameters. I was
able to set dump_coef but not dump_enable

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841330] Re: [HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-ba1xx, Realtek ALC295, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2019-08-25 Thread anoopjohn
Sorry, looks like I did not follow the full instructions. Here is the
file with the proper name.

I am also documenting the steps so that somebody else can follow the
instructions as well.

This is after booting into Windows and then rebooting into Ubuntu
without a Windows shutdown

Stop pulseaudio

As user run

systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket
systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service

Then run

sudo su

Then run

echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_coefs

I was getting a permission denied error even as root. I was however able
to change permission of the file and edit with vi and change the value
-1 to 1

root@zyxware-aj:/home/anoopjohn# echo 1 >
/sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_coefs
bash: /sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_coefs: Permission denied

Then run

cat 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_enable

I was getting a Permission Denied error

root@zyxware-aj:/sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters# cat 1 >
/sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_enable
bash: /sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_enable: Permission denied

I was not able to edit file with vi like with the dump_coefs file as the
file did not exist and I could not create the file

Am uploading the file here.

Ok seems like your video is working now.

Did you update system to 5.0.0 -25 and test if the bug remains?
what about booting an older kernel, does this still happen?

I was unable to run the dump_enable command as I was getting permission
denied even when running as sudo su. This is the alsa-info when I booted
into Ubuntu while rebooting from Windows and when there is no sound. I
will do the same while booting from a shutdown state from windows.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1798961] Re: Random unrecoverable freezes on Ubuntu 18.10

2019-08-25 Thread Uttam Pal
I am having the same issue since 18.04. I monitored the memory usage in
system monitor. The total RAM uses increases gradually after the boot.
Even if no program is running it goes on increasing until it is 100% and
then everything freezes. The memory uses by the processes doesn't add up
to the total memory uses shown. Whichever program is eating the RAM is
not listed in the processes. The issue remains in 19.04.

First thing I notice is that the mouse cursor freezes as I'm using it,
then I hit the CAPS LOCK key and the LED indicator doesn't respond.
Then I try the "REISUB" command, but it doesn't do anything either.
Only a hard reset works, pressing down the power button for a few

  How to reproduce?
I couldn't figure out a consistent method. It is still random to me.

Also happens under Arch Linux and Fedora.

2019-08-25 Thread lotuspsychje
Thank you reporting this bug and make Ubuntu better!

Before filing bugs, could you update your system to latest and test this
bug again please?

Something also went wrong with your screen record, could you make a new
one and/or screenshot?

Maybe also attach your dmesg logs so volunteers can debug a better way.

Status in exiv2 package in Debian:

Bug description:
  0.26 was released in April

  http://www.exiv2.org/whatsnew.html

"This release contains a large collection of new features, new lenses
and bugfixes across all areas of Exiv2. "

Presumably debian stretch freeze interfered with a prompter update

  Currently in debian exp here:

  https://packages.debian.org/experimental/exiv2

I was hoping to to get a new feature release of the very popular
Digikam (5.7.0) into artful under a FFE, but that has bumped the
  minimum exiv2 build depend from 0.25 -> 0.26.

If due to rdeps etc an update in artful turns out not to be possible,
I would like to target this for early in 18.04 LTS cycle.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841367] Re: 250819

2019-08-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1542519] Re: Double menu bar

2019-08-25 Thread Charles Burns
Running 16.04 in 2 different machines, one of which is affected by the bug and
the other not.
I prefer to stay with Xenial since I admin a few family systems and the
workload reduces over time with Xenial now in caretaker mode.

Each was installed at different times, the unaffected one having been
installed almost from the first stable release and having been regularly
updated, the affected one having been installed a few weeks ago from an
iso saved about 2 years ago and updated at install and regularly since.

The unaffected machine is a 14 inch Clevo laptop with i3 onboard graphics
"Broadwell GT1", no special driver noted.
The affected machine is an ASRock mini hybrid desktop affair with i5 onboard
graphics "HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)", no special driver noted.

Both are running the same official package 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4

Thanks to rtimai's work on this bug, I've given the user a simple shortcut to
restart the Unity session - per comment 14
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/1542519/comments/14

This is a small burden for such a great version as Xenial with unity has
been.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1840931] Re: wifi connection keeps being dropped: 18.04 on Lenovo IdeaPad

2019-08-25 Thread No Nickname
** Description changed:

- Xubuntu 18.04 installed on a new Lenovo IdeaPad 330S; system is up to date (I
run Software Updater pretty much daily).
+ Xubuntu 18.04 installed on a new Lenovo IdeaPad 330S; system is up to date (I
run Software Updater pretty much daily).
  lsb_release -rd tells me:
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
  Release: 18.04

I am connected to the internet via a wireless router and although the
desktop panel network icon tells me I am always connected to the router,
every so often the actual internet connection stops working -- as in, I
am connected to the router, but websites won't load or Firefox will say
  I am offline.

If I click the network icon on the desktop panel and uncheck and then
re-check "Enable Networking", the computer reconnects to the router and
the internet connection works again, at least for a while.

I cannot discern any specific pattern to this behaviour; it seems to
happen randomly -- but often enough to be really disruptive.

Other devices connected to the same router (two Android phones and an
older laptop running Linux Mint) do not have this problem.

+ EDIT: Even when I do stay connected, the connected speed is often
+ ridiculously slow, at 1 Mb/s -- as opposed to e.g. 144 Mb/s on another
+ device connected to the same router. Restarting the network as above
+ seems to solve the issue for a short while -- although I'm not sure,
+ since clicking on "Connection Information" then lists "Speed" as
+ "Unknown". After a while it then goes back to "1 Mb/s".
+
My apologies if I didn't report this correctly or left out anything
important; I am just an end user and not an expert. Please let me know
if I need to provide any further information.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1772859] Re: Network Manager is not able to manage the devices on Ubuntu 18.04

2019-08-25 Thread Sumit Solomon
My version ubuntu server 18.04. Below worked for me:

1. Creating an empty file(/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-
managed-devices.conf)

2. removing the file(10-globally-managed-devices.conf) from /usr/lib

and finally

3. changing Network renderer to NetworkManager in Yaml file.

Yaml file location: /etc/netplan

My yaml was like this:

network:
ethernets:
  eno1:
   dhcp4: true
version: 2

Changed to:

network:
 version: 2
 renderer: NetworkManager
 ethernets:
  eno1:
   dhcp4: true

and I change it to:

  1. Ubuntu(version <17.04): Creating an empty
file(/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf) and
restarting NM,
 solved the issue.

  2. Ubuntu(version 17.10): Copying the said
file(10-globally-managed-devices.conf) from /usr/lib to /etc/ and modifying the
"unmanaged-devices" to none, resolved the issue.

  /network-manager/+bug/1638842

For the latest version(18.04), none of the above solutions worked.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2019-08-25 Thread Olivier JOLY
I move too Ubuntu 19.04 and we are still affected by this bug, into multi users
professional environment we usually just use LTS, but try to solve this issue
without success. ;-(
Try also without success :
===
A workaround for those of us that need a solution now is to place

  [Service]
  UMask=

in

  $HOME/.config/systemd/user/gnome-terminal-server.service.d/umask.conf

for an individual user or in

  /etc/systemd/user/gnome-terminal-server.service.d/umask.conf

Bug description:
In order to set the default umask of my users to 027 or 007, I
followed the instructions provided in 'man pam_umask' :

In the 'gecos' field of '/etc/passwd', I have inserted 'umask=027' or
  'umask=007' (for myself).

Then, MOST graphical applications systematically run with the correct
  umask.

In particular, when I press Alt-F2, run 'xterm sh' and type 'umask',
  it systematically displays 0007.

But when I press Alt-F2, run 'gnome-terminal -e sh' and type 'umask',
  it systematically displays 0022.

That is BAD, and is a security issue.

Workaround : Inside the newly created '/etc/profile.d/umask.sh', and in each
'~/.bashrc', add following content :
  UMASK="$(grep  -o  "^$USER:.*,umask=0[0-7]*"  /etc/passwd)"
  if [ "$UMASK" ]; then
umask "${UMASK#$USER:*,umask=}"
  fi

In fact, 'gnome-terminal' MUST NOT force umask=022, but keep umask unchanged.

Thank you in advance for a quick correction.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1840906] Re: Firefox could not hear streaming Radiko

2019-08-25 Thread Paul White
Seiichi,

I'm marking the "linux" component of this bug report as "Invalid" as you
are not reporting a bug with the Linux kernel.

Not all codecs are included in a default installation of Ubuntu due to
copyright or legal issues in some countries. Other Linux distributions
are affected in the same way. If after installing ubuntu-restricted-
extras you can hear Radiko then this is not a bug in Firefox as far as
Ubuntu is concerned. You will find the same issues when using Chromium,
Epiphany or any other web browser included in the Ubuntu repositories.

I'm closing the Firefox bug too as you have confirmed that you can hear
Rdaiko by installing "ubuntu-restricted-extras".

Secondary monitor not connecting in 18.04 LTS

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have an Acer Aspire V Nitro VN7-592G-709V with Nvidia Geforce 960M
(nvidia driver v390) and a Benq W1070 projector.

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and my projector connects
for a split second and then gets disconnected. In Ubuntu 16.04
projector was working fine as a mirror display and extended desktop.
  Here's what I already tried:

  - enable the nouveau driver instead of the nvidia driver -> no result
  - enable the on-board intel board with sudo prime-select intel -> no result
  - apt purge nvidia* & reinstall nvidia driver 390 (stable) or 396 (beta) ->
no result
  - disable nouveau driver, disable nvidia driver from the repository and
install nvidia driver from nvidia website (both 390 and 396) -> no result
  - installed CCSM (CompizConfig Settings Manager) and disabled display
auto-detection -> no result
  - played around with the refresh rate (some forums say that the two outputs
have to be in sync -> no result
  - deleted the whole Ubuntu 18.04 upgrade and installed a fresh 18.04 -> still
the same issue
  - tried to manually enable the output with xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --mode
1920x1920 -> nothing
  - under settings -> devices -> displays I don't see a secondary display (just
the main one)

I have the latest libxrandr2, 2:1.5.1-1 under Ubuntu 18.04 (updated to
  day)

Here is the output of xrandr the very second when I connect the
