[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988488] Re: Screen freeze before the login screen (if the third party software option was selected)
It seems the problem was Wayland + gnome-shell specific because gnome- shell is the display server and effectively single threaded. gnome-shell deadlocks on itself if it spawns a client synchronously and expects to wait for that client to finish. The client never finishes because the server isn't replying while it's waiting for the client to finish. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1988488 Title: Screen freeze before the login screen (if the third party software option was selected) Status in GNOME Shell: New Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: [ Workaround ] 1. Install *without* the third-party option. 2. sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras 3. sudo apt remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi [ Original Description ] The problem started to appear 2 weeks ago after one of my daily updates. It also happens after I re-install the system from a freshly downloaded ISO file. The system freezes at the moment, it starts the gnome display manager. I file the bug-report after a partial upgrade just before I will reboot the system. If needed I can reboot in recovery mode, since the gnome display manager is not started in that case. I tried the continue button without effect and also "apt upgrade" and "apt dist-upgrade" do have the same effect I run the VM from the Host-OpenZFS file system, so I can restore to before the update. Recently I use a Virtualbox snapshot to restore the system to before the update/upgrade. If you need log files, let me know. ** Changed in: firefox Importance: Medium => Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697122 Title: Package Firefox with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in environment to enable pixel scrolling with touchpad and touch gestures Status in Mozilla Firefox: Confirmed Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 17.04 Firefox version: 53.0.3+build1-0ubuntu0.17.04.2 In Firefox, two-finger scroll gestures on a touchpad are interpreted as scroll wheel rotations, and the content scrolls three lines at a time. This is inappropriate behavior for touchpad scrolling; it should scroll pixel-by-pixel. Firefox already has the ability to do this, you just need to turn it on by running the program with MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 in the environment: for example, by running `MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 firefox`, or adding it to /etc/environment or something like that. Turning on this behavior yields a large usability improvement for laptop users. Therefore, I am proposing that MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 be permanently added to the packaging such that it's always present when Firefox runs. This is what Fedora does, and it results in a much improved experience for the laptop user. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 849624]
I've just tested this after upgrading to 102.3.1. Running "thunderbird -calendar" on the command line when an instance of thunderbird is already running loads the calendar, but in the existing window, rather than a new window as I requested in bug 1763083 (which got marked as a duplicate of this one). When I click on a pdf (for example), I want to have the option to open it in my default application, in my case in okular, and not in something else. However, acroread is invariably presented is presented as default choice because it happens to be the first entry in /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache for application/pdf. This happens in spite of the fact that the desktop provides correct defaults.list and mimeapps.list files The comments in the firefox bug seem to suggest that firefox developers are convinced that firefox calls the correct gtk libraries to determine the correct application. These were supposed to be public (which is fixed in 1.6.1) and can be used by other components to check the installed version at runtime. In particular WebKitGTK depends on wpebackend-fdo, and we expect future security updates may use these functions. The WebKitGTK team has committed to making it possible for 20.04 to get updates until April 2023, and this update makes those possible. Users of WebKit-based browsers should be able to browse the Web with an up-to-date WebKitGTK stack that receives security updates :) Test Plan - The following C program can be used to check that the bug is present before the wpebackend-fdo update, and that the issue was fixed afterwards: /* * $CC -o wpefdoversion wpefdoversion.c $(pkg-config --cflags --libs wpebackend-fdo-1.0) * * This will: * - Fail to link with wpebackend-fdo 1.6.0 * - Succeed with version 1.6.1 */ #include #include int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { printf("wpebackend-fdo runtime version: %d.%d.%d\n", wpe_fdo_get_major_version(), wpe_fdo_get_minor_version(), wpe_fdo_get_micro_version()); return 0; } Browsers which use WebKitGTK for rendering web content running in a Wayland session use wpebackend-fdo. Loading e.g. https://people.igalia.com/aperez/poster-circle.html in Epiphany (package epiphany-browser) should work the same before and after the update. What Could Go Wrong --- Given the little amount of changes between versions 1.6.0 and 1.6.1, the possibility of breakage is minimal to none. Diff: https://github.com/Igalia/WPEBackend-fdo/compare/1.6.0...1.6.1 If there were unexpected build failures for the package, an alternative would be to continue shipping version 1.6.0 with commit 1dda80de5372e56cdc6f818a3fca493f7cc1f9d6 applied, which would solve the issue with the wpe_fdo_get_{major,minor,micro}_version symbols without including the rest of the changes from 1.6.1: https://github.com/Igalia/WPEBackend- fdo/commit/1dda80de5372e56cdc6f818a3fca493f7cc1f9d6 Finally, given that default installs of Ubuntu desktop do not include a WebKitGTK based browser, users are likely to have another web browser available if things were to go wrong. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992854] [NEW] Update wpebackend-fdo to 1.6.1
Public bug reported: Impact -- This is a minor bugfix release of the 1.6.x series: https://wpewebkit.org/release/wpebackend-fdo-1.6.1.html The version currently in 20.04 LTS is 1.6.0, which accidentally shipped with a bug that made the symbols wpe_fdo_get_{major,minor,micro}_version hidden. ** Affects: wpebackend-fdo (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Test program C source" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1992854/+attachment/5623985/+files/wpefdoversion.c -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to wpebackend-fdo in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1992854 Title: Update wpebackend-fdo to 1.6.1 Status in wpebackend-fdo package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Impact -- This is a minor bugfix release of the 1.6.x series: https://wpewebkit.org/release/wpebackend-fdo-1.6.1.html The version currently in 20.04 LTS is 1.6.0, which accidentally shipped with a bug that made the symbols wpe_fdo_get_{major,minor,micro}_version hidden. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1971012] Re: Nautilus windows not respecting workspace isolation
** Changed in: gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock (Ubuntu Jammy) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1971012 Title: Nautilus windows not respecting workspace isolation Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock source package in Jammy: Triaged Bug description: In settings, under multitasking > application switching, setting "include applications from the current workspace only" is supposed to provide workspace isolation, making only apps in the current workspace show in the dock. For example, if I have 2 firefox windows in workspace 1, and a terminal window in workspace 2, terminal should not show as open in the dock in workspace 1, and firefox should not show as open in the dock in workspace 2. Additionally, quitting all windows from right click in the dock should close only all windows of that app in the current workspace. This mostly works correctly, but for some reason some apps, including nautilus and software and updates, do not respect it. If you switch workspaces with them open, the new workspace shows them as having the same number of open windows as the previous workspace, even though no windows are open in that workspace. If you quit with right click from the dock, it sometimes quits all instances across all workspaces. If you open a separate window in the new workspace with right click on the dock, it then updates to the correct number, but the problem then returns on switching back to the previous workspace. If you open and close a window in the new workspace, then switch back to the old one, it is possible to get to a point where despite several windows of the app being open in that workspace, it shows as not open in the dock. The problem persists across different installs and machines To reproduce: Open ubuntu (a live version is fine). Turn on workspace isolation in settings. Pin nautilus to favorites so it shows in the dock. Open a window of nautilus, and a window of some other app (firefox works). Switch workspaces. Observe that an orange dot is still present under nautilus, and it still acts like it is open in the new workspace --- ProblemType: Bug ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu82 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: unknown CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME DisplayManager: gdm3 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 22.04 InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-04-25 (735 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS "Focal Fossa" - Release amd64 (20200423) NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_modeset nvidia Package: gnome-shell 42.0-2ubuntu1 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm-256color PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.15.0-27.28-generic 5.15.30 RelatedPackageVersions: mutter-common 42.0-3ubuntu2 Tags: jammy Uname: Linux 5.15.0-27-generic x86_64 UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to jammy on 2022-04-30 (1 days ago) UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin lxd nordvpn plugdev sambashare sudo wireshark _MarkForUpload: True To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock/+bug/1971012/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1
Xubuntu 22.04.1 after upgrading from 20.04 In order to get multiple Windows 10 systems to "discover" the samba shares on two different Xubuntu systems, I had to re-enable SMB1 protocol on all the Windows systems. Microsoft apparently keeps disabling this on system updates. As reported above, old Windows mapped drive assignments made to Ubuntu samba shares have continued to work over time, but new shares cannot be seen unless SMB1 is enabled. of course, this should all just work using newer secure protocols. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992756] Re: Screen turns black for a long time after each login and when detecting screens or changing screen layout.
** Attachment added: "recentjournal.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1992756/+attachment/5623940/+files/recentjournal.txt ** Information type changed from Public to Public Security -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1992756 Title: Screen turns black for a long time after each login and when detecting screens or changing screen layout. Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-515 package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I have a Thinkpad P15 with a A2000 GPU with Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. This happens using Wayland and nvidia cuda drivers. It seems like the system uses very long to identify the screens. This happens when I use external monitors, but also when only using the laptop screen. Changing the screen layout takes so long that I am unable to accept the change before it is reverted to the previous. Only the mouse pointer is visible, the rest of the screens are black during this process. $ apt-cache policy cuda cuda: Installed: 11.7.1-1 Candidate: 11.8.0-1 Version table: 11.8.0-1 600 600 https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/ubuntu2204/x86_64 Packages *** 11.7.1-1 600 600 https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/ubuntu2204/x86_64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 11.7.0-1 600 600 https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/ubuntu2204/x86_64 Packages $ nvidia-smi Thu Oct 13 10:46:02 2022 +-+ | NVIDIA-SMI 515.65.01Driver Version: 515.65.01CUDA Version: 11.7 | |---+--+--+ | GPU NamePersistence-M| Bus-IdDisp.A | Volatile Uncorr.
