[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1997597] Re: Mouse input latency in Wayland sessions is too high

2022-11-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Oh wait, you seem to be using amdgpu and that particular driver has
suffered from not getting fullscreen direct scanout when it should in
fullscreen games. That could easily be the problem in which case you
should ignore my comment #3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982560] Re: Mouse lag/stutter (missed frames) in Wayland sessions

2022-11-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There's theoretically a reason that the triple buffering patch could
cause the cursor to skip frames:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1441#note_1568056

Although that's for CURSOR-ONLY FRAME SKIPS. If your whole screen is
skipping the same frame then we're waiting for a larger mutter rework
(v44 or v45) in which cursor movement is able to complete separately
from screen redraws. That's what Xorg does.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1997597] Re: Wayland session has laggy pointer tracking

2022-11-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
To some people "lag" means higher latency without frame skips. The
higher mouse latency in Wayland sessions is an unfortunate feature of
Linux's atomic mode setting (as well as mutter's architecture). You
might get better performance by disabling atomic mode setting in
/etc/environment:

  MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple

and then reboot.

To other people for which "lag" primarily means stutter and missed
frames, indeed bug 1982560 sounds like the right place for that.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 22.10 and noticed that some of my apps were
no longer in Dark mode including gedit/chrome. When setting the style
through the quick menu however, these apps go to Dark mode (presumably
due to gtk theme being applied). Likewise for the quick menu itself,
setting the style to Dark in gnome-control-settings doesn't change it
  to dark, it remains light.

see screenshot attached, you will see that when setting the style to
Dark in Settings, gedit and the quick menu remain light. I tried to
logout in case it was an issue with how the settings are applied but
it didn't help. it's also clear that the toggle in the quick menu
works as intended so there seems to be an issue with the way gnome-
  control-center applies the Dark style.

Window goes on top but does not get focus

Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have recently experienced an annoying behaviour which I think was
  not occurring before.

I have in dconf 'click-action' set to 'previews' (I like this
  behaviour).

When I click an open app icon in the dash-dock having several windows
open, a preview of them appears as expected. When I click one of these
previews the corresponding window gets on top as expected. But this
window (call it A) does not have focus, which is unexpected.

Expected behaviour : window A gets focus

Actual behaviour : window A does not get focus

Why it matters: When I start typing text it types in the "wrong"
window (I mean the window that had focus before while I am expecting
to modify the text in the window that just went on top) and if I do
not pay attention I may get into trouble by modifying files I do not
want to modify. This could actually cause some serious trouble to an
unlucky person, quite hard to debug if they do not know the cause.

Do not get confused: there are 'focus-...' options in 'click-action'
but they concern what happens when you click the app icon. I am
referring to what happens when you click the preview image, which is a
  different thing.

Thanks for the bug report.

Please start by deleting all local/unsupported extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

If the bug still occurs without the unsupported extensions then while it
is happening, please run:

  journalctl -b0 /usr/bin/gnome-shell > shelllog.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

** Summary changed:

- the default DESKTOP ICONS NG doesn’t work as it doesn’t show Desktop
Icons/folder, so I have to install another extension named DESKTOP ICONS NEO
made by mawi. This works fine. Even if both cases or if either one of them
was/is working, I will see GJS. I have seen this. What to do? The only solution
is I don’t use any extensions at all, which I don’t like.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1997142] Re: gnome-shell (wayland session) crashes on kernel 5.15.0-53-generic when some applications are started

2022-11-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Bug description:
With an always-on-top window opened, Alt + Tab will, instead of giving
(keyboard) focus to the chosen window, focus will go to the always-on-
  top window.

  Reproducing steps:
  1. Make sure your Ubuntu session is a Wayland session.
  2. Open Firefox. Make sure it uses Wayland, launch with `env
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 firefox`.
  3. Play a YouTube video, and then clicks the Picture-in-Picture buttton.
  4. Due to Wayland limitation, right-click on the PiP window and choose
"Always on top".
  5. Open another window of anything e.g. a terminal.
  6. Press Alt + Tab to switch to the browser.

Expected result: focus goes to the browser. If on YouTube, you should be able
to press '/' and cursor should go to the search box.
Actual result: focus goes to the PiP window.

Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 22.10, after successfully mounting a network drive through

drive doesn't appear as it should in the dock.

Settings -> Ubuntu Desktop -> Configure dock behavior -> Include

  gsettings get org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-mounts
  true
  gsettings get org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-mounts-network

All options are enabled (as it is by default).

Note that it works fine for external drives like a USB key. It just
  doesn't for network drives somehow.

Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately we can't support personal

built yourself then please report them upstream at

Cannot connect to Ubuntu BLE servers

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I'm on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS, using bluez 5.65 (built from sources by this
guide: https://docs.embeddedts.com/BLE_Examples), and doing the following steps:
  1. Run `python3 /usr/local/lib/bluez/test/example-advertisement`
  2. Run `/usr/local/lib/bluez/test/example-gatt-server`
  3. Use nRF Connect app on Android 9 phone to connect to the
"TestAdvertisement" device

The outcome is that the phone app tries to connect, but fails, leaving
me with a view of the GATT services and characteristics, but with no
way of accessing (read/write/notify) it. I have tried many other BLE
server implementations, but for the bug reporting I focused on the
  most trusted reference.

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Checking "Connect automatically" in the configurations tab of VPN connections

It's like that for at least a year now.

I would like to see it connecting to my VPN after a wireless/wired
  internet connection was activated.

This is still an issue in maverick.

X server segfault when starting youtube videos

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This is an intermittent bug; happens perhaps 1-3 times a week. Always
when just starting to play a youtube videos (I haven't seen it playing
videos on other sites, or locally, but the sample size is skewed.) I'm
using Nvidia drivers with a 6GB 1060 GTX running three monitors.
Kubuntu 22.04, up-to-date. GPU memory is not stressed (usually around
5 or 6% usage. System RAM is 16GB, also not stressed (10-15%).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998112] Re: Nautilus shows 4 icons for 2 files while ls command shows 2 files

2022-11-28 Thread Coeur Noir
I was playing around

/usr/share/backgrounds/

~/Bureau/

~/Images/Arrières-plan Bureau/

I did use some drag and drop between « desktop » and Nautilus.

At some point, drag'and'drop a file between desktop and a Nautilus
window created symlink instead of moving or copying item.

I've trashed undesired symlinks, and after that I used right-click cut-
paste ( from desktop to Nautilus window ), ending in 2× icons per file.

So I launched the ls command to have another view on the folder, and
confirm where my files were ( and how many were they. )

+1. Webrender on/off does not matter here at all.

Maybe also worth mentioning:
I am on a 10th gen Intel GPU with 6.0.9-zen1-1-zen kernel

Boring workaround:

Switch to classic view and move the reading pane up until the message

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998124] Re: Nautilus- broken link from "Find New Applications"

2022-11-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, right clicking on a .desktop should at
least suggest text editors to open it. Could you take a video or
screenshot showing the dialog you get? Also the gtk dialog showing that
control shouldn't display it if gnome-software isn't installed...

Nautilus- broken link from "Find New Applications"

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
(On 23.04 Daily build) If you are creating a .desktop on the
desktop... or in Nautilus... and right-click use: Open With Other
Application > Find New Applications... It errors out and locks up
everything. The error displayed says that it can't find 'gnome-
  software'.

It gets multiple error popups that do not go away. You have to reboot
to get out of it. Another user can recreate the error, but can cancel
  out of it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1790608] Re: [snap] Libreoffice/Firefox do not open files from thunderbird (more general: from /tmp)

2022-11-28 Thread Daniel M Gessel
I mounted a tmpfs in ~/tmp and FireFox can read from there.

I think firefox can read from /home (created a /home/dummy.html file
which FireFox could read).

I haven't tried this (I'm generating temporary html with a script, so a
slightly different version of the same problem), but editing /etc/fstab
to move the mountpoint of the tmpfs at /tmp to /home/tmp, then a link
from /tmp to /home/tmp might work.

But I also saw my first kernel panic after moving some stuff from /tmp
to ~/tmp (but haven't reproduced it again), so I'm not sure this is all
kosher...

Bug description:
I received a document via e-mail in Thunderbird. I have the
Libreoffice snap package installed. When I want to open the document
from Thunderbird, I see the Libreoffice splash screen, and then a
dialog stating "/tmp/mozilla_0/.docx does not exist."

The same dialog appears when I navigate to the folder in Files and
  want to open it.

When I copy the file to my desktop, however, I can open it without
  problems.

I guess the source of the issue is confinement, that the Libreoffice
snap can only access files from $HOME. But this breaks the case where
thunderbird creates a temporary copy in /tmp.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998124] [NEW] Nautilus- broken link from "Find New Applications"

2022-11-28 Thread Mike Ferreira
Public bug reported:

(On 23.04 Daily build) If you are creating a .desktop on the desktop...
or in Nautilus... and right-click use: Open With Other Application >
Find New Applications... It errors out and locks up everything. The
error displayed says that it can't find 'gnome-software'.

It gets multiple error popups that do not go away. You have to reboot to
get out of it. Another user can recreate the error, but can cancel out
of it.

Dev thread: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2481316

If I install 'gnome-software', it continues on normally... I want to
file a bug to report it and get that resolved, but unsure what package
to file it against.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1993928] Re: Switching to new input method does nothing

Title:
Switching to new input method does nothing

Status in ibus-m17n package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have ibus-m17n installed, but switching to a different input method
  does nothing.

  STR:
  1. Make sure my 2nd input method (in my case, "Sanskrit (sa-IAST (m17n))"
appears under "Settings-->Keyboard-->Input sources."
  2. Use alt-space to switch to my second input method.
  3. Notice on the top panel that the indicator shows that the input method has
changed.
  4. Attempt to key in some special characters (using Gedit, LibreOffice,
etc.).

  Expected result:
  The special characters will appear.

  Actual result:
The keyboard behaves as if the input method were my usual "English (US)."

  No such problem with 22.04.

  Removing and re-adding "Sanskrit (sa-IAST (m17n))" in Settings doesn't
  solve the issue.

Hardware: IBM ThinkPad Carbon X-1, 5th generation.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998111] [NEW] Quectel EM05-G not being unlocked

2022-11-28 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Public bug reported:

Despite support being in fcc-unlock.d

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 2c7c:030a Quectel Wireless Solutions Co., Ltd.
Quectel EM05-G

the modem remains locked and enabling it fails:

jak@jak-t14-g3:~:master$ mmcli -m any -e
error: couldn't enable the modem:
'GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.Error.Core.Retry: Invalid transition'

Doing something like

# modprobe -r cdc_mbim
# modprobe cdc_mbim
# mbimcli --device-open-proxy --device="/dev/wwan0mbim0"
--quectel-set-radio-state=on
# systemctl RestartModemManager
# mmcli -m any -e

makes it work.

Peculiar it seems that the mbim-proxy process that ModemManager started
is hanging and causing the mbimcli command to time out (if I just run it
manually).

Further investigation warranted, tips welcome.

Status in NetworkManager:

Bug description:
We rely on network-manager dispatcher scripts on our desktop and
laptop computers. The dispatcher scripts are used to update DNS
records with nsupdate when the dhcp lease is renewed.

With jammy this is not working anymore. It seems that dispatcher
scripts are run only when the interface comes up (with action 'up')
and with the initial dhcp lease (with action 'dhcp4-change'), but when
the lease is renewed, the dispatcher scripts are not run with any
action. The only action the dispatcher scripts are run regularly with
is 'connectivity-change', which seems to occur twice in a row every
  few hours.

I have made a simple script to log how the dispatcher scripts are run:
  /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/99-test:
  #!/bin/bash
  PATH='/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin'

  echo $(date) 0: $0 IFACE: $1 ACTION: $2 >> /tmp/nm.log

This script proves that action 'dhcp4-change' only occurs when I
manually restart NetworkManager.service or unplug and replug the
  ethernet cable.

  network-manager version: 1.36.6-0ubuntu2

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998099] [NEW] gnome-shell doesn't recognise Inhibit shortcuts permission

2022-11-28 Thread Hugo Squelch
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1997481 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1997481

Public bug reported:

When trying to use a program that tries to make use of the `Inhibit
Shortcuts` permission, for example a virtual machine program like virt-
manager, gnome-shell ignores the permission and the shortcuts you press
which should be inhibited/changed to do something else by the program,
activate the gnome-shell's system shortcut instead.

This means that when I am trying to alt+tab inside my virtual machine,
it instead alt tabs to a different window on my host rather than on my
guest OS.

I believe this problem is fixed on gnome-shell 43.1. Could you please
update gnome-shell43.1 to fix this issue.

update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/5524#note_1465711

enabling audio recording only requires changing a parameter via dbus.
If the change is not invasive I believe it should be done by default
  in Ubuntu.

Note that Kazam is not functional on Wayland, which means that >=
Jammy currently lacks a well integrated audio+video screencast

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1995766] Re: X server segfault when starting youtube videos

2022-11-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
c59a5430-676f-11ed-a93a-fa163e55efd0 is a crash in KWin:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/bucket/?id=/usr/bin/kwin_x11%3A11%3AKWin%3A%3AWorkspace%3A%3AworkspaceEvent%3AQAbstractEventDispatcher%3A%3AfilterNativeEvent%3AQXcbConnection%3A%3AhandleXcbEvent%3AQXcbConnection%3A%3AprocessXcbEvents%3AQXcbUnixEventDispatcher%3A%3AprocessEvents

Judging by the timestamps in comment #3 however that should be ignored
(from our perspective) because Xorg crashed first.

This is an intermittent bug; happens perhaps 1-3 times a week. Always
when just starting to play a youtube videos (I haven't seen it playing

Kubuntu 22.04, up-to-date. GPU memory is not stressed (usually around
5 or 6% usage. System RAM is 16GB, also not stressed (10-15%).

If there are no crash files then please look at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file
/var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to
recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

Bug description:
I have a ".desktop" file which opens Firefox.
I click the file and I see the mouse cursor icon is change to a "loading"
icon, but firefox window doesn't appear.
The loading icon continues for a few seconds (about 10sec) and then the
normal cursor icon is seen.

  Overall, Firefox doesn't appear.
This issue started just recently, in the last week (probably due to an
upgrade, I assume).
This issue happen only sometimes - meaning, sometimes when I click the
".desktop" file then firefox starts normally, but in some other times then
Firefox will not appear.

I performed some debug and found out the it is related to the gnome-shell
program, or more specifically to the extension "ubuntu-dock".
By inspecting the file "/var/log/syslog", whenever the issue happens, then
the following error appears in the file (omitted irrelevant data):

Bug description:
After upgrading from 22.04 to 22.10 I've been seeing some display
  glitches.

  - green static appears, usually when scrolling, regular sized green blocks,
like giant pixels
  - firefox not refreshing when full screen video plays (separate windows,
separate screens)

I would guess I probably have the wrong package here, but there's no
way for me to tell if it's mesa, the kernel, gnome-shell, or something
  else.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1997553] Re: network-manager fails to trigger dispatcher scripts with action dhcp4-change when dhcp lease is renewed

OK. I'll report this upstream.

Title:
network-manager fails to trigger dispatcher scripts with action
dhcp4-change when dhcp lease is renewed

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

  #!/bin/bash
  PATH='/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin'

  echo $(date) 0: $0 IFACE: $1 ACTION: $2 >> /tmp/nm.log

This script proves that action 'dhcp4-change' only occurs when I
manually restart NetworkManager.service or unplug and replug the
  ethernet cable.

  network-manager version: 1.36.6-0ubuntu2
