[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1921583] Re: Can't run System Monitor in Ubuntu Unity 21.04

2021-03-29 Thread Robert Roth
@seb128, the crash in my opinion is not related to the theme, but rather
the same as reported upstream https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
system-monitor/-/issues/182, coming from the migration to LibHandy, on
non-GNOME environments. The issue was fixed upstream with commit
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-system-
monitor/-/commit/69224a7b27a85e7485fb47f9e9f14ce674798c28 on master and
with commit https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-system-
monitor/-/commit/ba93af5b3e429db5a9c4dd7e2d06b800735a9071 on the
gnome-40 stable branch, and will be available with the next stable
release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1778361] Re: The Processes tab only displays the current user's processes

2018-10-24 Thread Robert Roth
That's weird indeed. It's hard to believe that it's an UI issue, as I
haven't seen that and don't see that on Fedora. Could it be related to
dconf setting not being stored and the filters being reloaded a second
later from dconf? I did see some other reports of settings not being
saved, which would support this conspiracy theory. Unfortunately I don't
have an Ubuntu devel machine, will try to set up a VM and investigate
there, unless anyone has a better idea and can give me some pointers on
how to reproduce.

@6th: the request was to report this upstream, however I have just
tested it with system monitor 3.28.2 on Fedora, and it works just as it

last.

The cpu % column has the two confused. When showing an upside down
pyramid the largest values should be at the top (which is how the
other columns work, e.g. the ID column). Instead the smallest values
  are at the top.

The Diamondville Intel Atom N270 x86 sub-notebook processor is a
single-core CPU. The netbook has only one of these CPUs.

Yet, System Monitor > Resources Tab, under the heading "CPU History",
lists two CPUs, CPU1 and CPU2. It displays different real-time load
factors for each of these two CPUs. The associated two traces in the
graph show correspondingly different CPU behaviour.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a

  I have Ubuntu Desktop 64-bits 13.10 and 14.04.
I'm not able to see network traffic on gnome-system-monitor and/or nmon. In
both cases they are always in "zero".
Network is working ok. Common web-browsers and BitTorrent are able to inform
the network traffic for their downloads and uploads.
I experienced that situation on Ubuntu Desktop 13.10-10 up to 13.10-17. I
expected Ubuntu 14.04 to solve it but I have the same behavior. Both
gnome-system-monitor and nmon (and probably other tools too) should show the
network traffic bandwidth. I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a
bug.

My hardware is an AMD FX-6300 CPU on ASUS M5A78L-M LX3 with the on-
  board Ethernet card.

2018-01-25 Thread Robert Roth
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

to add a copy button (for the UI it would be nicer to have a cell

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1054591] Re: device by-uuid

2018-01-25 Thread Robert Roth
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

  Hello,

I've recently noticed that gnome-system-monitor does not 'sanitize'
programs icon to a sane size :

When it happen a program has a huge 'icon' (e.g. the OpenShot
462px*462px /usr/share/pixmaps/openshot.svg for example), it displays
this huge 'icon' as is, at its nominal huge size, in its programs
listing, rendering the interface almost unusable.

One would have preferred gnome-system-monitor to resize every icon to
the same reasonable size in order not to mess its interface up.

  Hope this helps.

  Valentin.

Then if I drag the window to the top of the screen and make it go
fullscreen that way then the line disappears entirely:
  System_Monitor_Screenshot3.png

And then if I go to the "Resources" tab the line becomes only in the
centre and in a strange pattern off to the right in some cases:
  System_Monitor_Screenshot4.png

Finally, if I I drag it away anywhere it becomes normal again.

system monitor wrong if cpu offline

Status in gnome-system-monitor package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I observe two faults in the Ubuntu 14.04LTS system monitor:

  1. If a CPU is marked offline, the system monitor does not report
  any higher-numbered online CPUs. E.g.,:

a. Run system monitor - it reports 8 CPUs.
b. Mark CPU 3 offline, via:

 echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/online

c. Restart system monitor: It now reports only 3 CPUS (1,2,3).

The system monitor display not change immediately, so I suspect the
immediate failure is caused at system monitor initialization, presumably
because it assumes that the first offline CPU indicates the end of
CPUs for this system. Which is not true, of course.

  2. In the system monitor display, CPUs are numbered 1...N, for an N-CPU
system. This is incorrect, because CPUs are numbered from 0, not 1.
This can lead to confusion when looking at what particular processors
  are doing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1325776] Re: add --version argument

2014-06-04 Thread Robert Roth
This has been fixed upstream, in System Monitor 3.10.0, released in 2013, but
the fix didn't make it into Trusty, being an LTS release, and the System
Monitor 3.10 release having some UI changes (including a headerbar) which have
been rejected for inclusion to have a stable application set in the LTS.
It's not clear yet whether Ubuntu will accept apps with headerbar for Utopic.
Based on an IRC discussion, developers are working on better experience and
integration between headerbars and Unity, so it might happen.

2014-06-04 Thread Robert Roth
Could you provide a screenshot? As system monitor doesn't have a taskbar
mode, I assume this will be a bug in another application, but I'm not
sure which one it is, and a screenshot would help me to reassign to the
correct product. Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 102026]

2013-10-28 Thread Robert Roth
I can also reproduce this on Ubuntu 12.10, and as this does not
reproduce on Windows and OpenSuse (with KDE) I suppose it's a bug in the
VCL GTK implementations of the text entry and combobox.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1093582] Re: gnome-system-monitor display without grid

2013-10-24 Thread Robert Roth
Yes, that's an issue fixed upstream, however Ubuntu still uses an older
version, and probably won't get upgraded to the current stable release
in the next cycle either, so unless someone's willing to backport the
patch, this won't change.

Thanks for taking the time to comment to help Ubuntu improve.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1093582] Re: gnome-system-monitor display without grid

2013-10-24 Thread Robert Roth
@Sebastian: Yes, System Monitor has been updated along with the other
applications to fit in the GNOME ecosystem with headerbars, which is a 3.10
feature, and requires gtk 3.10. I have been looking at what could be easily
backported, but system monitor has undergone some refactorings this cycle too,
so changes are not too easily backported.
I will take some more time and to pick the best bugfixes and the ones which
also appear in launchpad and can be ported easily, and come up with a system
monitor ubuntu package update featuring those ones.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1093582] Re: gnome-system-monitor display without grid

2013-10-24 Thread Robert Roth
@Sebastian: I have checked from the system monitor git repo log what would be
worth porting, and there's not much worth porting, basically the fix for this
bug and another one for a wording change in bug #1156238. The other ones, some
performance improvements and memory leak fixes are also interesting, but as
these happened after serious refactorings, they can not be easily ported.
With the ones I have mentioned I have created a branch with new patches for it
in /debian/patches, unfortunately bzr builddeb fails with some strange error,
looks like it wants to revert the fix for the graph grid rendering issue based
on the upstream 3.8.2.1.
I would appreciate if you could take a look into that branch, based on
ubuntu:gnome-system-monitor, see it at
lp:~evfool/gnome-system-monitor/stableupdates.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1201229] Re: Should be a choice for one graph on multicore CPUs

2013-07-15 Thread Robert Roth
Which version of gnome-system-monitor are you running? You can check it in the
menu by clicking Help-About.
The 3.8 version has an option in Edit-Preferences-Resources tab to draw a
stacked area chart. Toggling that option maybe shows what you would like to
see, with a twist: all core usages are shown on one graph, but summed up as a
stacked area chart, so that you can see how each core contributes to the total
usage, but you can also see the total usage.
See the attached image from my System Monitor 3.8 (available in the stable
13.04 and the development 13.10 version)
Would that help you, or you would like to see something else?

GNOME provides high contrast icons for all of the panels in System
Settings. Ubuntu needs to provides icons for their customizations.

At a minimum, it needs an icon that looks good at 48x48 as I believe
that's what System Settings and the Unity dash uses. A 256x256 icon is
needed for Unity's Alt-Tab switcher and GNOME Shell's Activities
Overview. Also, Unity supports launcher icon size from 32 up to 64
  pixels.

To turn on the High Contrast theme, open System Settings. Click
Universal Access and switch High Contrast on.

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
In Ubuntu Software Center, in the Dash, and in the Launcher, a non-
default application that hasn't been opened yet is shown exactly the
same way as one that has been.

This makes finding newly-installed applications a bit more difficult.

In iOS 6, a non-default application you haven't opened yet has a blue NEW
banner across the top corner.
  http://www.macstories.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/NewAppBadge.jpg
  http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17pkjhqaotn5dpng/original.png

USC does use a green checkmark emblem on all applications that are
installed. So if we apply some sort of emblem to those that haven't
been opened yet, probably it should extend or replace the checkmark
  emblem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1176967] Re: file-roller is opening exec even with wine installed

Title:
file-roller is opening exec even with wine installed

Status in “file-roller” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If you remove the 'application/x-ms-dos-executable' from the
file-roller.desktop file Mimetype entry suddenly wine starts opening exes again.
There is no application/x-ms-dos-executable association in
/usr/share/applications/defaults.list (for file-roller or another program)

Also, opening 'execs' on fileroller is a very arcane usercase that
almost never comes up and is better handled by 'open with'. While
opening with wine is most frequent.

What i find strange is why it's not trying all binftms associations
  before trying the mimetype associations.

Related bug (binfmt mono-runtime detection script is getting confused about
non-C# execs); but this bug happens even with mono-runtime not installed:

Title:
  gnome-system-monitor gksu summary

Status in “gnome-system-monitor” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
If in gnome-system-montor 3.8.0 you want to Pause/Stop and resume a process
the gksu dialog which pops up to ask the sudo password ask for the password to
elimentate the process (which is confusing because the user might think that
the process will be actually eliminated). This might be a translating issue
(I'm using german desktop).
I'm using Ubuntu raring and experienced this behavior after the upgrade from
12.10 (which didn't have the nice feature to controll root processes).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1173982] Re: gnome-system-monitor gksu summary

2013-05-05 Thread Robert Roth
Thanks for the heads-up, I did not know that text is used for stop an
continue processes too, even if looking at it seems absolutely logic.
Anyway, I have changed the wording from kill process to control
process which is more generic and can involve continue, stop, kill
process too (changed in upstream trunk).

I get this message about untrusted packages and this warning box that
doesn't go away if I hit either OK or repair.

This also happened when I tried to download a different texlive
  package.

Both worked fine using the terminal. So I guess that makes it a bug
  with the GUI.
