[MASTER] Open With dialog not user-friendly

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  Invalid
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in mozilla-thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When choosing to open a file in Firefox, an Open With dialog appears.
You can choose to save the file or open it with a program from the list.
However, if the desired program to open the file with is NOT listed, the user
must navigate the filesystem to /usr/bin (or wherever) and select the
  appropriate program.

A more user-friendly way would be to list all of the known programs installed
that are available to open files with, and then have an Other... or
Advanced... button for the user who would rather navigate the filesystem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 881526]

2015-01-24 Thread Timothy Arceri
The open and closed drivers currently don't play nice together.
Hopefully one day that will change. But to me it looks like you haven't
fully removed fglrx and this is causing you problems.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 881526]

2015-01-20 Thread Timothy Arceri
(In reply to Alberto Salvia Novella from comment #11)
 Does fglrx depend on Mesa?

No

How can I figure out if this is a bug in Mesa?

Make sure you have completely removed fglrx (there are many guides on
how to do this in Ubuntu just google it) and then try using this ppa
with updated drivers https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu
/graphics-drivers

When I have used an sftp connection for a while - started from

after an hour or so. The only way to get an sftp connection to that
server again is to re login to my computer. The error message I get is

  Could not open location 'sftp://..'

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a
reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a
reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken

Sometimes when this happens, my computer freezes for about 60 seconds.

I have Ubuntu 9.04 64 bits - error happened on Hardy also - on a

When I get the save dialog or save as dialog and press the create
folder button a new folder is created and I get a selected untitled
folder so I can over write it with what name I want to name it with.
The problem is that when I press any key nautilus jumps to searching
for a file or folder starting with that letter instead of overwriting
the folder name. So whatever I do I get a new folder always with
Untitled Folder name. I have to rename it manually afterwards. I
worked until 11.10 and the bug is present since the beta of 12.04.

Bug description:
Using OpenOffice.org for both Ubuntu (home) and Windows (work), I noticed
that on my Ubuntu machine, the navigation button icon is badly cutted. The
button is on the bottom-right corner of the window, in the middle of the two
double arrows. Should be a little circle, but it doesn't fit, so it should be
scaled down a bit.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 884856] Re: gnome-keyring integration breaks some GPG functions

Title:
gnome-keyring integration breaks some GPG functions

Status in GNOME keyring services:
  Unknown
Status in “gnome-keyring” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
In recent Ubuntu releases (not sure how far back, but at least
Oneiric) gnome-keyring offers gpg-agent integration and is enabled by
default. The gpg-agent protocol implementation of gnome-keyring is
very incomplete and hence breaks at least the smartcard functions of
gpg and most functions of gpgsm.

  Steps to reproduce (smartcard):
  1. Acquire a smartcard reader, an OpenPGP smartcard and install pcsc-lite
  2. Start a normal new Ubuntu desktop session
  3. strace gpg --card-status

  Actual results:
  ...
  socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 3
  connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/tmp/keyring-p6oNWL/gpg}, 25) = 0
  ...
  write(3, SCD SERIALNO openpgp, 20)= 20
  write(3, \n, 1) = 1
  read(3, ERR 103 unknown command\n, 1002) = 24
  ...

  The printout on stdout is
  selecting openpgp failed: unknown command
OpenPGP card not available: general error

Expected results: The agent should know the SCD command and act
  accordingly.

  Steps to reproduce(gpgsm):
  1. Migrate from an old installation that includes X.509 certificates and
private keys in gpgsm.
  2. strace gpgsm -K

  Actual results:
  ...
  socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 4
  connect(4, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/tmp/keyring-p6oNWL/gpg}, 25) = 0
  ...
  write(4, HAVEKEY 62B64B58FF1BD7E0B48FE51A..., 48) = 48
  write(4, \n, 1) = 1
  read(4, ERR 103 unknown command\n, 1002) = 24
  ...

Expected results: The agent should know the HAVEKEY command and act
  accordingly.

Due to the way the gnome-keyring is activated in recent releases no easy
workaround is possible. Removing the GPG_AGENT_INFO environment variable makes
the individual examples work (they will just start their own agent if
necessary), but that's not possible (and certainly not configurable) on a
system level. gnome-keyring-daemon allows in principle to deactivate the faulty
gpg module (there is a command line option --components that accepts a list of
any combination of pkcs11,secrets,ssh,gpg).

But currently the gnome-keyring-daemon is started through the
pam_gnome_keyring.so PAM module which uses a hard-coded command line
  (--daemonize --login).

Steps to resolve this problem: At least a) disable the gpg gnome-keyring
module by default in the PAM module, and/or b) make the command line options
that the module uses user configurable. Or c) extend gnome-keyring with all the
missing functionality (and play a constant game of catch-up), or d) leave
gpg-agent operations to the gpg-agent and try to solve whatever problem the
gnome-keyring gpg-agent emulation was meant to solve in another manner.

Bug description:

For XCF images (Images created on Gimp), a high zoom level, say 400% gives a

  Expected behavior:
For jpeg and png images, the image is reloaded (scaled as per new zoom level)
whenever the zoom level is changed. XCF images should do the same.

  What actually happens:
On zooming, XCF thumbnails are not scaled according to zoom level while the
small thumbnail is stretched to get a larger one, resulting in a blurred image.

Bug description:
I am using xubuntu with the default greybird theme.

In various programs, such as gedit, the right hand scrollbar does not
go all the way down to the window resize handle, but stops quite a tid
before that. As a result there is an alien greyish square displayed
below the bottom end of the scrollbar. (see screenshot below)

that there can be nothing done to circumvent that in the greybird

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 377322] Re: Nautilus sftp connection breaks spontaneously after a while, needing re-login to fix it

2013-05-09 Thread Timothy Arceri
Hi Murray,

Thanks for all the feedback. I managed to configure my router to drop
connections after 1 minute in order to try reproduce the issue however.
I think we need to clear up exactly what your issue is. The raring
version of Nautilus seems to handle things much nicer than previous
versions there is no freezing and the error messages seem to be a little
bit more refined.

Anyway the point is the issue has changed from the initial post. Can you please
describe what your problem is? In my test once the timeout drops the connection
and I try to navigate Nautilus I get an error message saying:
Opps something went wrong.
Unhandled error message: Internal error: The underlying SSh process died
Is this the message you are getting? If so what is the solution you are after?
Do you just want it to try auto reconnect?

If you are getting a different message can you please describe exactly
whats happening, and the solution you want so that I know what I'm
working toward.

Thanks for you time,
Tim

The unfinished file remains on the destination folder, now, since this

delete the destination copy alltogether. Otherwise could be indexed

2013-05-04 Thread Timothy Arceri
Hi Murry/Anyone else that can reproduce this bug,

I have been trying all morning to reproduce your issue with a stock
version of gvfs and have so far had no luck (although I may have
uncovered some other rare bug corner cases). Can you please provide a
little more information.

1. Are you on a Wired or Wireless network?
2. In the time you have connected to the sftp location is it likely that your
wireless/ or even wired connection has dropped out and reconnected?
3. If you are reconnected do you always have the same IP address?
4. What exactly are you doing when you get the error message?
5. Do you still see the sftp location mounted in Nautilus after you get the
error message?
6. Do you have any other Network issues when the error occurs? i.e is you
network connecting working fine for everything else?
7. Is there anything else you can think of that might be helpful with
reproducing this?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 377322] Re: Nautilus sftp connection breaks spontaneously after a while, needing re-login to fix it

2013-05-04 Thread Timothy Arceri
Ok, after doing some reading about the TCP keep alive option I think I
have found the explanation for the issue you describe. For reference
here is an extract from: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/TCP-Keepalive-
HOWTO/overview.html

---
2.4. Preventing disconnection due to network inactivity

The other useful goal of keepalive is to prevent inactivity from
disconnecting the channel. It's a very common issue, when you are behind
a NAT proxy or a firewall, to be disconnected without a reason. This
behavior is caused by the connection tracking procedures implemented in
proxies and firewalls, which keep track of all connections that pass
through them. Because of the physical limits of these machines, they can
only keep a finite number of connections in their memory. The most
common and logical policy is to keep newest connections and to discard
old and inactive connections first.

Returning to Peers A and B, reconnect them. Once the channel is open,
wait until an event occurs and then communicate this to the other peer.
What if the event verifies after a long period of time? Our connection
has its scope, but it's unknown to the proxy. So when we finally send
data, the proxy isn't able to correctly handle it, and the connection
breaks up.

Because the normal implementation puts the connection at the top of the
list when one of its packets arrives and selects the last connection in
the queue when it needs to eliminate an entry, periodically sending
packets over the network is a good way to always be in a polar position
with a minor risk of deletion.

_ _ _
   | | | | | |
   | A | | NAT | | B |
   |_| |_| |_|
  ^ ^ ^
  ||--- SYN --|
  ||- SYN/ACK |
  ||--- ACK --|
  | | |
  | | --- connection deleted from table |
  | | |
  | PSH | --- invalid connection |
  | | |

---

I guess the first step from here is to see if some firewall software can
be used to drop these connections after say 30 seconds so that this
scenario can be reproduced more easily then a fix for gvfs can be worked
on.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 377322] Re: Nautilus sftp connection breaks spontaneously after a while, needing re-login to fix it

2013-05-04 Thread Timothy Arceri
Hi again Murray/others how can reproduce,

While I still have not found a way for me to reproduce this issue I have
created a new ppa for you to try 1.16.1-0ubuntu21.

This may help as it will cause the backend to exit more cleanly when the
underlying SSH process dies. Although I cant be sure when or if this
call is made under these circumstances until its tested. If this latest
patch does not work its possible that its Openssh that is causing the
10-15 minute delay in the connection re-establishing rather than gvfs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 377322] Re: Nautilus sftp connection breaks spontaneously after a while, needing re-login to fix it

2013-05-03 Thread Timothy Arceri
Ok, thanks Murray. This is the first PPA I have created so I wasn't sure how to
give the package a different name so that it would be the preferred version of
gvfs. Any tips are welcome.
You should still have my version installed as there hasn't been an official
release in a while. You can check with the command 'apt-cache policy gvfs' you
should have 1.16.1-0ubuntu19

Looks like I'm going to have to figure out how to reproduce the issue
myself. I'll might start by trying the steps in this bug as it seems
related: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325979

Sorry Murry I seemed to have misread your previous post. For some reason
I though you were using precise. I have updated the ppa with a new
Raring build based on my conversations with the upstream devs. Hopefully
this one should do the trick. Please let me know how it goes.

2013-04-02 Thread Timothy Arceri
Ok, PPA is ppa:t-fridey/t-arceri-gvfs-ppa

Please test with no remote files open for first timeout. Hopefully the
sftp mount will be unmounted and you will be able to remount it.

Next please test with a remote file open when the timeout happens
hopefully again the sftp mount will be unmounted. (you may receive and
error message from the program with the open file this is expected.)

Let me know how it goes.

I have created a patch on the upstream bug but I'm having difficulty
reproducing the issue on my machine. Is someone able to help me with
testing? I can either create the deb packages for you or create a patch
that you can use to build your own. I currently have debs built for

average user could think that this package is an official Amazon
webapp, which, as far as I understand, its not.

If all of the above is correct, the description, the name, and the
icon should state clear that this package is intended for developers
  or advanced users.

it should land in the next version of GTK 2 and GTK 3.

This is not a bug. Its expected behaviour. What you are seeing is what
happens when the cell is to small to display everything it contains. If
you make the cell bigger you will see that the date is displayed
correctly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1132531] Re: Error in date format for Wednesday

2013-02-24 Thread Timothy Arceri
The characters do not fit in the default column size so Calc displays
### rather than cutting off the text. This is a feature so you know that
there is more data. The column must default to a set size and there is
no good argument to widen them just so that this format fits, for
starters its a user defined format that Jesusfreak has defined not a
standard Calc format. Even if it was a Calc format you need to draw the
line somewhere for example Wednesday, 6 March 2013 is almost twice as
long.

I hope this clarifies why I marked the bug as invalid. The make it easy
for new users line is valid sometimes and other times user just need to
learn how the software works. This is one of those other times.

This is not fixed in 12.04 or 12.10. The patch still needs to be

2013-01-04 Thread Timothy Arceri
@amay82

No need to be a smart arse. I don't get paid to fix Ubuntu bugs I just
volunteer my time to fixing some bugs here and there its my way of
giving back to the project. The upstream patch is just waiting on the
upstream developer getting back from holidays, he has promised me he
would review my patch when he gets back.

If your not going to make a constructive comment please don't make one
at all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 318517] Re: Word wrapping is not respecting indentation

2012-12-05 Thread Timothy Arceri
The following is copied from the Upstream Bug:

Ignacio Casal Quinteiro (nacho) [gtksourceview developer] 2012-12-04
17:15:42 UTC

Here are some find outs from a quick research that I made today.
First of all we need to touch almost all the layers to have this working, so if
somebody is brave enough to make it here are the steps:

1) Get the size of a tab \t from the gtktextlayout.c. For this we can either
check if there is a way to get it from the pango layout or we could as well
move the tab-width property from GtkSourceView to GtkTextView.

2) From the gtktextlayout.c we need to detect the indentation of the paragraph,
counting the number of tabs and get the size in a pango scale.

3) For that layout we need to set the indentation level for the wrapped text.
For this we can already do it by setting a negative value to the pango layout
indent value (i.e set_indent(-20)). Although I think the right thing to do here
is to set a new set/get_indent_wrapped_text, which will do the same as the
indent value but just for the wrapped text.

4) We need to add a setting into gedit, either in the preferences dialog or at
this point it could be easily done with a plugin. (A setting in the dialog I
think it would be better though).

So if somebody wants to have some fun feel free to go fixing each of those
steps, and if you have any question we are like always in the irc channel
spotted in the previous comment.

When wrapping a line it would be awesome to have gedit indent the
wrapped line just like the original line.

Imagine _ being a space character, the current wrapping works like
  this

  hello hello hello hello hello
  hello hello hello

It would be better if it worked like this:

  hello hello hello hello hello
  hello hello hello

While editing this makes code-indentation readable even if the editing
window is resized to be very narrow. It is also very helpful for
unavoidable long lines, like regexps or URLs. It makes formatting less
of a pain with generated code. etc etc etc

KDE editor component and Eclipse both have this behaviour, it was also
present in the famous EditPlus editor for Windows.

I am sure i am not the first person requesting this feature, so i
wonder if there is a philosophical stance against this wrapping style
or if a plugin is available to handle it.

reproduce the bug on my system so its untested. Is someone with this
issue able to apply the patch and test that it works?

  To reproduce:

Start gedit in the ru_RU.utf8 locale (this is important! in this
locale %p yields an empty string, in the C or en_US.utf8 locale it
doesn't and thus the bug is not reproducible).

Choose Правка Вставить дату и время... (Edit Insert Date and
  Time...) from the menu.

Choose the Использовать другой формат (Use custom format) option.

Try to enter %p in the provided box.

Once you do so, gedit starts consuming 100% CPU and compiz dims its
window. At this point, you don't have any other option except to kill
  gedit.

Instead, gedit should process the provided date format and yield
  nothing.

  Hi,

I was editing a text file when the cursor began to behave strangely.
  The file contained these lines:

  CREATE TABLE people(
integer primary key,
name varchar(50),
age integer
  )

When I put the cursor after the 'l' in 'people', the arrow key would
not move the cursor to the right. Instead it jumped to the next line.
Similarly, I could not add text at this position.

Viewing the file in a hex editor revealed a lot of spaces (284 to be
accurate) after the opening parenthesis. Probably I've added those
spaces without knowing it (resting my book beginning Ruby on the
space bar ^ ^). Still, I feel the editor should handle a few hundred
chars on a line without misbehaviour.

I attached a copy of the text file.

Thanks for developing and maintaining this simple but useful editor!

Open with dialog does the same thing so should maybe fix this at the
same time.

Properties dialog behaves correctly, so can see how its should be
implemented by looking at this.

reproduce 100% of the time on Ubuntu 12.04 and 10.04 (it probably
  affects all Ubuntu versions) :

  1. Put 2 files (their content can be identical or different) with the same
name in 2 different directories :
  mkdir ~/test1
  mkdir ~/test2
  cp installation_manual.pdf test1/doc.pdf
  cp report.pdf test2/doc.pdf

  2. Open Nautilus ; go to the test1 directory and delete the file
doc.pdf. Go to the test2 directory and delete the file doc.pdf.

  3. In the Trash directory, you now have :
  % ls -l ~/.local/share/Trash/files/

As you can see, the file doc.pdf from the test2 directory is
renamed doc.2.pdf in the Trash directory, but it's related
trashinfo file has the right filename doc.pdf in the Path
  variable.

  4. In Nautilus, go to the Trash, select the 2 files and clic on
  Restore.

  5. Now look at the names of the restored files :

  % ls -l ~/test1/
  total 18M
  -rw-r--r-- 1 alexis alexis 18M avril 5 14:29 doc.pdf

  % ls -l ~/test2/
  total 760K
  -rw-r--r-- 1 alexis alexis 758K avril 5 14:29 doc.2.pdf

As you can see, the file restored in the test2 directory has a
  filename doc.2.pdf instead of doc.pdf.

Sounds like a classic race condition.
You probably wont see this on your Netbook as they generally have slow single
core processors. This type of race condition is more likely to happen on a
multi core computer were one process can starts up faster than another process.

May be unity2d should use different shotcut for mainmenu?

  ---
  Desired resolution:

  - The F10 shortcut should be changed to Alt + F10. No F keys
should ever be used for shell shortcuts without an additional modifier
key. This change brings the shortcut into line with the Alt +F1
  Launcher keyboard navigation shortcut.

  - The menu key should perform the same function as Alt + F10 (display
menus). A nice to have gold plating feature would be to detect if a
menu key is present on the keyboard, and if it is display the 'menu'
key shortcut in the shortcuts overlay in place of Alt + F10

  - The Alt + F5 becomes a toggle, shifting the window between
restored and maximised states (replacing the previous windox maximise
  Alt + F10 shortcut)

Shift-Fn key registers as Fn key without Shift.

Status in “xkeyboard-config” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On any Ubuntu 12.04 system, a shift function key press (such as
Shift-F1) will register as a function key press without the shift (F1
in this case). This breaks all types of software.

To see the problem in action, open terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T), Edit-
Keyboard Shortcuts, click an item to change the accelerator then press
Shift-F1. You will see that the Shift does not register, only the F1
  key.

This was purported to be a fix:

  https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/26414

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/commit/?id=1d1338afa6aa555c5f6c83d07fceec43a4d87f0d

  but I see these changes were included in Rev78 f lp:xkeyboard-config ,
which made it into 12.04 already if I am reading correctly.

Title:
Cannot specify save directory for some GTK+3 applications -
  Recent/recursive directories replace user selection.

Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:
  New
Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “transmission” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This bug is very evident in the default 12.04 versions of Transmission
and gnome-screenshot, though I suspect many other applications are
  affected.

When the user clicks on dropdown list GTK widget to specify save
location, often times the resultant selection is not what the user
specified; rather, a folder that lies inside the selected folder is
often selected or a recently used download folder is selected.

Workaround (sometimes doesn't work): Select Other and manually
browse to the folder desired, then hit the select button.

Please see the following video for a demo:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0/+bug/915165/+attachment/3258165/+files/bug.webm

The video shows the 'Desktop' location being unusable - For
Transmission, it is often the 'Downloads' folder that is unusable (I
still have every new transmission file download to
Elegia_Eternum_Full_Version_v_1.1, no matter what I try). And even
if I do successfully sometimes get it to download to Downloads, the
folder Elegia_Eternum_Full_Version_v_1.1 will still be created.

This bug was supposedly addressed during the 12.04 beta cycle at bug
914356 but was possibly wrongly marked as fixed.

  Original Description:

can not save download to necessary directory. Unable to save the path,
who had previously worked. Manually change the path to save the
  ~/.config/transmission/settings.json does not help

  download-dir:
  /home/paul/\u0422\u043e\u0440\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0442\u044b/Rammstein
  - Made in Germany (2011)

  should be:
  download-dir: /home/paul/Торренты

Cyrillic in the config does not understand. If the jump file downloads
to choose the way nearly impossible. Keeps to himself wants, not where
indicated. This behavior only in transmission.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 974208] Re: Wrong filename when restoring from Trash

2012-11-24 Thread Timothy Arceri
The warning seems to be limited to 3.4. The code has changed in 3.6 and
the warning is no longer an issue. Hopefully the upstream patch will get
a review soon.

Title:
Wrong filename when restoring from Trash

Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In this particular scenario, the filename is wrong when restoring a
file from Trash. Here is the exact scenario, that I am able to
reproduce 100% of the time on Ubuntu 12.04 and 10.04 (it probably
  affects all Ubuntu versions) :

  1. Put 2 files (their content can be identical or different) with the same
name in 2 different directories :
  mkdir ~/test1
  mkdir ~/test2
  cp installation_manual.pdf test1/doc.pdf
  cp report.pdf test2/doc.pdf

  2. Open Nautilus ; go to the test1 directory and delete the file
doc.pdf. Go to the test2 directory and delete the file doc.pdf.

  3. In the Trash directory, you now have :
  % ls -l ~/.local/share/Trash/files/
  total 19M
  -rw-r--r-- 1 alexis alexis 758K avril 5 14:29 doc.2.pdf
  -rw-r--r-- 1 alexis alexis 18M avril 5 14:29 doc.pdf

  % ls -l ~/.local/share/Trash/info
  total 8,0K
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 alexis alexis 82 avril 5 14:30 doc.2.pdf.trashinfo
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 alexis alexis 82 avril 5 14:30 doc.pdf.trashinfo

  % cat ~/.local/share/Trash/info/doc.pdf.trashinfo
  [Trash Info]
  Path=/home/alexis/test1/doc.pdf
  DeletionDate=2012-04-05T14:30:02

  % cat ~/.local/share/Trash/info/doc.2.pdf.trashinfo
  [Trash Info]
  Path=/home/alexis/test2/doc.pdf
  DeletionDate=2012-04-05T14:30:07

This bug should certainly be reported upstream, but I don't know which
software component is responsible for this problem ; if someone tells
me which software component is responsible, I can take the time to
  report the bug upstream.
