alsamixer misidentifies the speaker channel as a headphone. In fact
raising one of the headphones channels allows the speakers to work.

The problem returns the next time you use the headphones, as the
computer will lower the volume to zero once again as you plug out the
headphones from the jack.

I've also found that whenever i change the hdmi resolution back to one of the 
resolutions that the tv originally reported, the audio over hdmi begins to work 
again.
if i again change to the the tv native resolution (set with xrandr), the audio 
over hdmi stops again.

while the audio is not working, in the 'PulseAudio volume control' the
output bars are still moving as thought sound is actually playing.

I'm experiencing what appears to be the same issue.

I have an Acer aspire. Fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 lts (though same
symptoms on 16.10 & 17.04).

I also experience this from the liveUSB installer. 
Due too having a busted screen, I have the hdmi connected to a tv, which 
reports the wrong native resolution. 

Prior to resizing my screen resolution, hdmi audio appears to work fine.
I can use xrandr to add the correct resolution, but as soon as I change
the hdmi output mode, I loose hdmi audio.

Laptop speaker audio appears to work fine; no headphones available to
test headphone jack.

I've tried the following suggestions without any success:
- pulseaudio -k
- Changing audio output frequency
- dkms suggested above 
- commenting out load-module module-switch-on-port-available in 
/etc/pulse/default.pa (suggestion from retropie faq)

If any additional details will help, please let me know.

Very same issue on an Asus E202SA.

After watching a movie pulseaudio stoped working at the next reboot. Now
I must use ALSA, but cannot use headphones o connect to HDI and listen
only with the netbook's sound. It is very annoying and disturbing.

At best I get this (took a screenshot). Before I got a notice saying
that could not connect to the pulseaoudio server...

For me none of these fixes worked.
In my case alsa switched the speaker volume with the headphone volume.
If turned the headphone volume up, the speakers worked.
If i plug in headphones they will work as they always did. 
When i pull them out it'll be back to being muted until i turn up the headphone 
volume again.

Issue was resolved for me by simply doing the following command in
terminal

Today I tried this, and no change.  Currently sound will come from headphones, 
but not speakers.
Dell 5510 - OEM 14.04lts upgraded to 16.04lts.

Edit in step #5 did not help (I have backed it out).   Not sure what
else I can do to help solve this issue, please ask (trying to make run
at Linux again)

Same problem here on my Asus EeePC 1015px on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1.
After a clean O.S installation the speakers worked for few days, but today I 
found that I got this issue also.
I can confirm that using headphones the sound is properly reproduced.
The operating system has all the updates available to 2016/11/06 installed.

Another strange thing I noticed is that the alert volume bar keeps
returning at lowest position at every reboot, no matter if I pull it up;
please check the attached image.

I also booted a live Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 (from the usb flash disk I used
to install the O.S few days ago) and I'm still unable to play sound from
speakers.

Same issue in lg p1 express dual, using Ubuntu 16.04. This bug is repeated 
previously with Ubuntu 8.04
Luke Yelavich, I tried installing this package 
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ubuntu/alsa-daily/+files/oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.201609250548~ubuntu16.04.1_all.deb
but doesn't work.
It works correctly changing files in /etc/modprobe.d 
It's the same solution that it worked in Ubuntu 8,04

Additionally, the previously mentioned site for DKMS upgrade suggests
the following: "Then check what kernel you're running with the "uname
-r" command."

However terminal informs: uname-r: command not found

No love here, with either the top listed Xenial package, nor the 'LTS'
at the bottom. Even without either package installed, I am able to get
sound via USB to a stand alone DAC and headphone amplifier via Spotify
and DeadBeef, but no sound from internet/youtube, through speakers or my
DAC/amp.

After installing a new hard drive, I installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my Sony
VPCL116FX and after experiencing difficulty with audio, attempted the

Hi, please not that I managed to fix this error following next steps.
Please also note that this is something specific for the Intel HDA chip..

You need to edit this file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and then add a
line in its end. Use the following commands:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Now add the following line at its end:

options snd-hda-intel model=generic

Now reboot your computer. It should solve your problem.

Also to note - there is 'dong' sound when the login box appears, so it
is a driver (pulse?) loaded after that point that disables the sound.
