Just happened to me, too (17.10 x64). RAM usage got up, system became
sluggish then stopped responding completely, only MagicSysRQ got me out.
After restart, the problem has left an ugly gift: syslog has grown to

disappear both in okular (QT) and firefox. So it looks like the

I'm on Ubuntu 17.10 (fully updated, including Gnome-Shell). Hardware is
a Lenovo X1 Carbon Laptop with Touchscreen. I've reproduced this issue
on both Wayland and XOrg. I've reproduced this issue on the 17.10 live
CD (Xorg) and on a fresh 17.10 (Wayland) install in VBox.

Move the mouse over the launcher and the EVERYTHING on the desktop
disappears for a few seconds. Only the wallpaper remains. Failed
immediately after the latest update (installed by me on 5 Jan 2018) and
