2022-07-22 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Himanshu,

Could you write your reports weekly? Since first evaluations are
approaching, please communicate more and don't hesitate to ask if you have
any questions. Apart from your mentors, me and Madhawa, feel free to ask on
the dev mail list.

By the way, let's arrange a catchup meeting when you have time next week?

Congrats Himanshu Acharya for Being Accepted to GSoC 2022 for Apache Gora

2022-05-27 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Himanshu,

Congratulations on your acceptance of Google Summer of Code 2022 for Apache
Gora.

May 20, 2022 - June 12, 2022, is the community bonding period. You can try
to familiarize yourself with Apache Gora during this period. Clone the
codebase, and try to pick some issues from Jira to fix or create new tasks.

You will start your project on June 13, 2022. Until then, try to be ready
for the next period.

That will be my six years as a mentor for GSoC. All of them have
successfully finished their tasks. If there is only one takeaway from that
success story, it is not breaking the communication. Try to be active on
the mailing list and want help when you need it.

Me and Madhawa Gunasekara will be your mentors.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Re: Upgrading Gora --> JDK11

2021-05-07 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Lewis,

I think that we should upgrade it to Java 11 as soon as possible. Plenty of
projects at Apache had upgraded the minimum required JDK version. I know
that some folks follow LTS releases. The next LTS, Java 17, will be
released four months later. So, it is time to support at least Java 11.

I can be a volunteer for the effort of upgrading to JDK 11.

Hi All,

Please check the documentation to understand how Apache Gora works. Also, it
will be quite helpful to subscribe to the mail list and try to contribute to
Apache Gora since you may have some questions about the project and discuss
your ideas related to Elasticsearch data store implementation.

Re: Congratulations to GSoC 2020 Students of Apache Gora

2020-06-20 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi GSoC Students,

Unfortunately, there is not 'any' report from students at the wiki. Please
write your reports and upload proposals to the page I've created for GSoC
2020 [1]. Also, please check the previous reports from here [2] as I
mentioned before.

The first evaluation period is between June 29 - July 3. I would like to
repeat the words that I've said:

The first remarkable point of the successful GSoC projects is "keeping
communication" which is more important than you may think.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Congratulations to GSoC 2020 Students of Apache Gora

2020-05-04 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi GSoC Students,

Congrats you all!

We are in the community bonding period until June 1. During this period,
you should get to know your mentors, read documentation, get up to speed to
begin working on your projects [1]

Please check issues at Jira [2] to find tasks that you can work as a
warm-up. On the other hand, please check previous reports from here [3] and
be ready to fill weekly progress reports there.

The first remarkable point of the successful GSoC projects is "keeping
communication" which is most important than you may think.

Let us know if you have any questions. I hope you have a great experience
during your GSoC period!

GSoC 2020 Student Proposals

2020-04-24 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi GSoC Student Candidates,

We, mentor candidates, score student proposals for GSoC 2020 until April
30, 2020.

It is really important to introduce yourself and your proposals. I
recommend each of you start a separate mail thread to cover those topics at
this public mail list.

Kind Regards,

Benchmark Module Results

2020-03-31 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi,

First of all, thanks to Sheriffo Ceesay who has implemented my Apache Gora
Benchmark suggestion during his GSoC 2019 period.

I would like to know that does Sheriffo or any other fellows had a
chance to run a comprehensive benchmark or already published results
anywhere? We can publish the results on our webpage (I cannot see related
info here: https://gora.apache.org/current/index.html#gora-modules)?

There are new data store proposals for GSoC 2020 and I would want from the
students to contribute benchmark results if they are accepted.

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Hacktoberfest 2019

2019-09-29 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Fellows,

There is an event named as Hacktoberfest
https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/

It may be great for us to attract new developers. We just need to tag some
issues as 'Hacktober'
and that's all.

What do you think?

Kind Regards,

Re: YCSB dependency issue -- Plan B?

2019-08-30 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Sheriffo,

There are some ways to overcome that issue i.e. using JitPack:
https://jitpack.io However, it should worth to wait Sean Busbuy's effort.
Otherwise, we can go as Lewis suggested.

By the way, I still wonder the reason of poorly performance of HBase native

Re: Final Report

2019-08-21 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Sheriffo,

Thanks for your great effort!

1) Could you separate charts for HBase and MongoDB? HBase charts suppress
MongoDB ones.

2) Report says that:

*"In this work, we have time to include only three gora data stores
(MongoDB, HBase and CouchDB)"*

However, you have not run this benchmark for CouchDB as far as I know?

3) I don't think there is a need to add commit hashes and messages as
Appendix. Especially if we consider that hashes will be changed once the PR
merged into the codebase.

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Reminder for Final Week of GSoC 2019

2019-08-20 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi GSoC Students,

Thanks for your great effort during this summer as a GSoC student! As you
know that August 19 - 26 18:00 UTC is the final week for students to submit
their final work product.

Please tidy up your codes as soon as possible and try to finalize them
according to the feedbacks of your mentors and community. On the other
hand, do not forget to document your work. I also encourage you to write a
blog post about your work if possible.

Hope you continue your great contributions after GSoC too!

Kind Regards,

Hi John,

I've already made my comments at your PR. Please check them carefully and
ask me if you need help.

For the documentation, I've checked what you've done. On the other hand, I
would want to encourage you to write a blog post about your Kudu
implementation and demonstrate an example of Kudu integration with Gora as
like a tutorial.

Re: Week 8 Report

2019-07-22 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Sheriffo,

I've checked all the GSoC reports including your's. Thanks for filling your
reports with time slot information about tasks.

You have 3 benchmark result charts at your Week 8 Report. Hbase-native is
dramatically slow compared to the others at 2 out of 3. Do you have any
comment about it?

Kind Regards,

Re: GSoC 2019: Congratulations, your proposal with The Apache Software Foundation has been accepted!

2019-05-07 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi John,

Congrats! Me, Alfonso Nishikawa and Carlos Muñoz will be your mentors.

Please check issues at Jira (
https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/GORA/issues) to find tasks that you
can work as a warm-up. On the other hand, please check previous reports
from here (
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/GORA/Google+Summer+of+Code) and
be ready to fill weekly progress reports there.

Please let us know if you have any questions. The first remarkable point of
the successful GSoC projects is keeping communication. I hope you have a
great experience during your GSoC period!

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

 Summary: Benchmarking Module
 Key: GORA-532
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GORA-532
 Project: Apache Gora
  Issue Type: New Feature
Reporter: Furkan KAMACI
Assignee: Furkan KAMACI
 Fix For: 0.9

We should make a benchmark and publish it, and improved version of the Yahoo!’s
Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB++) [1] is the most suitable tool for such a
purpose. Here is a recent research about Object-NoSQL Database Mapper (ONDM)
benchmark [2] which includes Apache Gora and they have produced the benchmark
source code as ASF 2.0 licensed [3].

Also, here is an example from Apache Accumulo which is based on YCSB [4].

Apache Gora Benchmark

2017-12-23 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Fellows,

As you know that our project is defined as:

"*The Apache Gora™ open source framework provides an in-memory data model
and persistence for big data.*[1]"

I believe that Apache Gora is a special project and it touches many
projects. I always wonder the performance of NoSQL DBs as individual and
accessed via Apache Gora.

I think that we should make a benchmark and publish it, and Yahoo!’s Cloud
Serving Benchmark (YCSB) [2] is the most suitable tool for such a purpose.
I found a recent research about Object-NoSQL Database Mapper (ONDM)
benchmark [3] which includes Apache Gora and they have produced the
benchmark source code as ASF 2.0 licensed [4].

Here is an example from Apache Accumulo which is based on YCSB too [5].

What do you think about it? Who wants to join that work apart from me?

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Re: [AEROSPIKE] Mapping file design and initial implementation details

2017-06-26 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Nishadi,

Could you start a documentation which guides how to integrate Aerospike
with Gora over an example. You can check my blog about Spark and Gora
integration as a guide [1]:

This can help your documentation and help your development process.

Re: JProfiling

2016-05-30 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi,

I also plan to test performance of Gora. This was my proposal for last
Apache: Big Data. Lewis suggested to check performance issues but on the
other hand we should see the performance of using just Cassandra, Gora
MapReduce on Cassandra, Gora SparkEngine on Cassandra, just MongoDB, so on
and so forth.

There are two main approaches we should consider to benchmark.
Computational heavy tasks and memory heavy task. Also, I really wonder
about the performance of my Spark implementation :)

If we can show that using Gora does not decrease performance statistically
significant then it may be a strong argument for us to encourage people to
use Gora.

We should write a benchmark package to achieve it. I'm really interested to
help it.

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Re: GSoC 2016 with Apache Gora

2016-03-20 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi Kevin,

Gora is a project under Apache Software Foundation and ASF is one of the
180 organizations who was accepted to participate in Google Summer of Code
2016. So, if you can find a mentor at Gora dev community (the person you
should report your progress apart from Google and who will help you through
your GSoC path) you can work for this idea as GSoC project.

This year I'm not planning to attend GSoC as mentor. However all of us can
help you when you start to work on this project. I hope one can be
volunteer to be a mentor for you.

By the way, I couldn't see you your attachment?

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Fancy UI for Gora Website

2015-10-29 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi All,

Is it possible to have a fancy UI for Gora's website:
http://gora.apache.org/

I like Solr's website: http://lucene.apache.org/solr/. CouchDB (
http://couchdb.apache.org/
and Wicket (http://wicket.apache.org/
<http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwicket.apache.org%2F=D=1=AFQjCNEaqSIRFrmEF13kCQcml-KdMaFYuA>)
has nice websites too. I can also add Storm (http://storm.apache.org/ and
Spark (http://spark.apache.org/) to that list.

I think that UI impresses people. What do you think about it?

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI

Re: Kickstarting GoraCI... again

2015-10-29 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi,

I think that we should extend the benchmark of GoraCI. I would like to make
a benchmark of:

* Hadoop Map/Reduce
* Spark
* Hadoop Map/Reduce via Gora
* Spark via Gora

For that aim, I would like to work on two types of dataset:

1) Data-intensive
2) CPU-intensive

It could be nice to benchmark them via GoraCI. Data-intensive and
CPU-intensive algorithms are two different kind of algorithms which makes
easier to compare performance results. On the other hand it could be nice to
compare the performance result of using Gora or not (this is not a must).

By the way, we should improve documentation i.e. it says "*Currently these
are updated to jackson-core-asl-1.4.2.jar and jackson-mapper-asl-1.4.2.jar.
For details see HADOOP-6945*" but I think that it is not a problem with
current Avro version at Gora.

I'm ready to help improving GoraCI.

Kind Regards,
Furkan KAMACI
