The build output must be cleaned in that module before building. It
seems this wasn't the case with the build bot.

On the windows buildbot the nightly build is only incremental. The
regular cleanup and its build are done once a week by the
aoo-win7-weekly scheduler. The cleanup can be done manually but since
the build time on the windows buildbot is so long and the next one will
run on monday at 6am anyway I suggest we wait for it.

If an incremental build doesn't work because of leftovers of a previous
build it means that some dependencies are missing.

Re: Replacing things with solutions from Boost

2013-01-06 Thread Pedro Giffuni

Hi Regina;

I fear that if we create a branch for it, it will be completely untested:

- I suspect that I would be the only one using such branch, and things like
the building issue with STLport would've been unnoticed.[1]

- The changes are really, really small and localized and just don't justify
a branch.

FWIW, in my local box I replaced Gamma (which was based on boost code
anyways).

The only other thing that I would plan to replace before 4.0 is the statistics
distributions and Boost makes that really REALLY easy. The new FDIST
as defined in ODF is just two lines (and one of them is the #include line)

I do plan to make patches and spreadsheets available for early testers, but I
won't start a branch for two patches (OK, actually three if you count what
I will do to the PRNG).

Maho-san, may have bigger changes in mind, i that case we may consider
a branch,

Pedro.

[1] Also note that the fix was applied with sufficient scope for all our math
stuff so that won't bother againl.

Oggetto: Replacing things with solutions from Boost

Hi all,

there are attempts to replace things with better solutions provided by Boost.
Although I'm not against this aim, I have concerns doing this directly on
trunk. Wouldn't it be better, to first make it on a branch and have time
enough to test it for all platforms, before it get integrated?

There are already ia2 and sidebar to go into AOO4.0. I fear that changing to
Boost will be to much to test till AOO4.0.

Re: What does supported mean for us?

2013-01-06 Thread Kay Schenk
On Tue, Jan 1, 2013 at 8:59 AM, Rob Weir robw...@apache.org wrote:

When a commercial software vendor says a configuration is supported
it means something, typically that to the extent the software license
includes an entitlement to support, that the vendor will provide that
service for that configuration. So saying something is supported is
 essentially an obligation.

With a volunteer-run, open source project, supported cannot mean
quite the same thing. We're not obligated, in any contractual sense,
to provide anyone with anything. That's the nature of a volunteer
 effort.

However, users and organizations considering OpenOffice will naturally
think in terms of support, even if they user that term loosely. We
use that term as well, in our release notes, etc. But I think we
ought to have a more precise definition of what we mean when we say
something is supported, in order to avoid any confusion. This
question has come up recently, with regards to the status of Windows
8, where that OS had not been released at the time AOO 3.4.1 was
 released.

So here's a strawman proposal for what supported means for us.

 1) Supported is a statement we make about a specific version of AOO
used with a specific platform, e.g., AOO 3.4.1 with Windows XP SP3 or
AOO 3.4 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

 2) Supported means we encourage use of AOO in that configuration.
We have high confidence that the combination is stable, that it works
 well and is safe.

 3) Our confidence in stating something is supported should have a
solid basis in testing. Something is not supported by us guessing
it should work. It is supported only after we have successfully
completed testing of that release with that platform. We probably
should define exactly what level of testing is required.

 4) Supported also implies that the supported configuration is
sufficiently available and there is sufficient expertise that we have
confidence that users will have a high quality experience seeking
support on the forums and user list.

 5) Supported also implies that we stand behind that release and will
take necessary steps to correct *critical* bugs, especially security
flaws, via rapidly produced point releases where necessary.

Note that these are all expectations that a user might have, though
any given user might think that supported means only a subset of
 these.

What we probably really need is more of a lifecycle statement,
including when support for a configuration ends.

 -Rob

I agree these 5 points are very good and needed. If we don't have an
explicit entry for something like this, we definitely need to create
something (off the Download page? elsewhere?)

Since this is free software, I see 4. and 5. as critical to end users. #3
should go without saying -- this seems standard practice to release
anything. There are certain areas of AOO that need more of this -- the DB
connectivity aspects for example. Some of this is difficult for many
volunteer testers without access to some environments.

OK, many more interesting points made already. I am also assuming that
commercial users have a slightly different set of priorities in this
regard. But something like this list is needed.

However, users with no active edits (including test dummies) should be
removed after a year, by Jan's maintenance script. Therefore, feel free to
create a test user which will not be a sysop, and hence may show problems
that your regular user (which /is/ a sysop) won't show. If you're through
with the test user, simply delete any edits or pages it made, and wait for
it to go away.

or try with the new user jantest password hej, which I created today to
test it.

With regard to outages, imacat and I receive mail from nagios approx. 2

A question: for those who report this is working correctly for them,

OK. Obviously we should put it back in (it may have been on the page and

There are some others that probably should be added as well.

You can look into Bugzilla [1], whether there is a bug, that you are
interested in. Use the 'Advanced search'. You can narrow the search by
project word processor and by a component. Severity should be
'trivial' or 'minor', so that there is no pressure to fix it. The status
should be 'Confirmed', so that you are sure it is really a bug and not
an user error. You can also use 'Accepted', if the last activity is more
than two years ago, because that was before the move to Apache. If you
have found one (or more) issues you are interested in, then tell it
here. The experienced developers can likely judge, whether such bug is
suitable to begin and they can give you a hint, where to start in the code.

We have quite recently introduced a category Difficulty, so there are
only few issues at all already sort in and therefore easy has only few
bugs. If it need not be Writer, you might find suitable issues via this
category too.

Then you will be interest in core development? That's fine. To get
started you first need your own build. If you not have done it already,
then you should start with reading the guides on the Wiki.
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO

If you want to work with git, that is possible, but need some further
steps.

Please ask whenever something do not work for you. Especially building
on Windows with a MSVC Express might be a little bit tricky. What OS do
you use?

If you have got your own build, you should say, which area you are
interested in, Calc, Draw, Writer, Help or whatever.

Re: (old) New feature/option to prevent autodata alterations in calc

2013-01-06 Thread Andrew Douglas Pitonyak

Remember, that anything that begins as a number, Calc tries to interpret
as a number rather than text. For most users, this is exactly what you
want most of the time. For a few unlucky people (like you), their
average use case is different than others, and you do not want that. It
is odd that you can turn this stuff off in a text table, but I am unsure
how to do so in a Calc document unless

Read this, it will give you some ideas.

http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9t=57276

Sounds like setting the default style to be text will solve your
problems; maybe.

For years I have suffered as
1. numbers are turned to dates

2. phone numbers are altered

3. lower case data is changed to identical higher case data (eg: data
to DATA(when DATA is a separate piece of data that i typed than the lower case))

4. If I type Scone then i can not write s, sc, sco, or scon in the same
field without my data being altered to the full word scone.

There is no solution to this in the options for calc.
Please do not reference selecting every cell as text or another type of data as
it only stops certain types of alterations.

What needs to be done is that there needs to be an option to turn off all
autodata transformations.

It should be in toolsoptionsopenoffice.org calcgeneralinput settings

Thank you in advance
Kiet Lovell

The important part of the message is the piece above, the following are just my
views/or justifications.

I am sending this to the development mailing group as this issue has been
complained about by at least hundreds of users for several years without
solution.

If you do not think it is a big problem then please google any of the following
phrases:

Office keeps changing numbers to dates
Turn off autodata in calc
Prevent openoffice changing my data
etc.

I have spent weeks of my life trying to fix this problem to no avail.
The only way i can use calc is to change the data such as putting letters with
phone numbers and when unable to input the correct data, by inputting slightly
wrong data so that it isn't changed to a different value.

Almost all users of calc use it for home finance or education or business
purposes, and all of these can be badly affected by unsanctioned changes to
data.

Microsoft office in it's latest reincarnation is unusable for a professional
and libre office has the same problem as openoffice.

If you the developers of open office cannot fix this then i will either:
* continue to suffer in relative silence
or less likely
* spend 6 months learning to program and produce my own software that i
will charge for.
or probably

* downgrade to an efficient OS like windows 3.1 when computers were
made for saving time and money, not costing you it
