Since this is the case then Ann additional issue with links between the two
will help a developer who picks up these issues.

Unfortunately I am not a programmer so I do not plan to fix it.
I'm available for reporting and testing.

I hope someone else on this list has the time/interest to add those patches.

AOO 4.2.0-Dev5 Community Builds Available for Testing and Fun

2024-02-05 Thread Jim Jagielski
We have community builds of AOO 4.2.0-Dev5 available for download and testing
at:

https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.2.0-Dev5/

We encourage people to try these builds out and to provide feedback and PRs
against them; These are NOT production ready! Heck, they aren't even BETA
ready. These are simply a more formal snapshot of the 4.2.0 development branch,
which leads to the official release of 4.2.0 at some future point. Early
testing helps the development process.

Hi all

While testing if Bug
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127783
was fixed (it isn't), I noticed that in the File Open dialog the File Type
filter does not include any MS XML files.
I believe this needs to be added...

My question is: should I add it in Bug report
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=67442
which already includes some patches, or open a new bug number?

Best,
Pedro

We should not announce dev builds outside of this mailing list. They are in no
way official and the intention is help the dev community in development. And
this is great because that is what you both are doing.

Thank you,

Those are now uploaded!

Great!

So what do we do with Dev5 now? Announce it?

Basically it is just a snapshot...

I would have liked to have more features, bugfixes and updated
translations included, but maybe we are able to add that for Dev6?

Regarding translation, I worked hard on the Help files and some parts of
the UI and the exported en-US.sdf is *much* cleaner now:

https://nightlies.apache.org/openoffice/install/linsnap-42x/?C=M;O=D

Additionally I put together the Help Authoring Tool (based on our
current code):

https://home.apache.org/~mseidel/HelpAuthoring.oxt

I was able to tweak AOO on Linux to open existing XHP files, but this
tool still needs a lot of attention from developers...

How about this PR:

I think concentrating on a dev 5 would be a very good thing. We need to see

I can't get 4.2.X to build in Ubuntu 18.04.6 x64

I'm using
./configure --with-build-version="$(date +"%Y-%m-%d %H:%M") - `uname -sm`"

but get

dmake: Error: --

Reason(s):

When you have fixed the errors in that module you can resume the build by
running:

build --from epm

Any ideas?

Thanks!

But even then, we can prepare Dev5 afterwards. Step by step to the 4.2.0

I will use these two graphics for "branding" located here:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/build-scripts/4.2.0-Dev4/wntmsci/

It is usable, but some main blockers are not fixed.

And of course the translations need to be updated.

That works for me. I can do the same w/ the macOS and Linux builds.

Is HEAD of AOO42X in a suitable state, or are there additional fixes to be

I think the patch to the FreeBSD port was committed by the person who
upgraded gmake to 4.3 to unbreak 4.1.7, and the -dev snapshot.

I maintain the AOO FreeBSD ports, but other committers are allowed to
tweak things to avoid breakage. When I find problems, I generally try
to upstream the patches, but this one flew under my radar. The patch
files for 4.1.7 are named patch-* here:
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/ports/head/editors/openoffice-4/files/
and for AOO420 here:
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/ports/head/editors/openoffice-devel/files/

The author, Tijl Coosemans is probably not an Apache
committer.

FreeBSD ports can contain a collection of patches that they apply to the
official source tarball that are needed to build the ports on FreeBSD.

When Tijl was doing the work to upgrade the FreeBSD gmake port to 4.3,
he found that it broke a number of other ports and generated patches to
those ports to fix the breakage. Here is the commit:

gmake 4.3 isn't broken everywhere. FreeBSD recently upgraded to gmake
4.3 and I am still able to build AOO417 and a somewhat aged snapshot of
 AOO420.

Nope. I am able to build AOO420 git revision d12e928220 from late
January using gmake 4.3.

Re: AOO 4.2.0-Dev2 (was: macOS and AOO42X)

2020-05-11 Thread Jim Jagielski
According to the gmake 4.3 release docs:

* WARNING: Backward-incompatibility!
Number signs (#) appearing inside a macro reference or function invocation
no longer introduce comments and should not be escaped with backslashes:
  thus a call such as:
foo := $(shell echo '#')
is legal. Previously the number sign needed to be escaped, for example:
foo := $(shell echo '\#')
Now this latter will resolve to "\#". If you want to write makefiles
portable to both versions, assign the number sign to a variable:
H := \#
foo := $(shell echo '$H')
This was claimed to be fixed in 3.81, but wasn't, for some reason.
To detect this change search for 'nocomment' in the .FEATURES variable.

* WARNING: Backward-incompatibility!
Previously appending using '+=' to an empty variable would result in a value
starting with a space. Now the initial space is only added if the variable
already contains some value. Similarly, appending an empty string does not
  add a trailing space.

Not sure if any of the above are a factor

Nobody knows the trouble I have seen.

cppumaker does create some magic hpp files from the IDL specification.
I would guess the generated makefile is not that good anymore.

But that is only a wild guess.

One thing I noticed while building with AdoptOpenJDK are numerous
warnings regarding Javadoc.
Maybe someone with some understanding can have a look at it?

Otherwise, I have no problems when using AOO on a daily base, even with
different JREs configured.

I do only build (for my personal use) when I did a commit. This way I
can monitor if something is broken.
Constant QA is something missing from this project for way too long...

How about we schedule a test release every quarter? These releases
do not necessary lead to a release and are announced as unstable.
But it would give people a better time frame to plan and we can

I build new versions about every second week.
For sure, people are downloading these builds and use them on a daily

The problem isn't about the builds...

I am not uncomfortable with building AOO. In fact I build even more
often to test my changes before I commit.
I only upload once a week or two. ;-)

And don't forget that we have no working buildbots anymore!

sure, I just want to show you a way to reduce your builds. Especially
when the commit rate is very low at the moment.

My personal opinion is that if switching does not require users to

switch and they can use the Oracle JRE if that is what they have then
the change make sense.

The user is still free to choose whatever JRE he/she wants (and is
detected by AOO).

I build with AdoptOpenJDK for some weeks now [1] and have found no
problems. But that *really* needs more testing...

Damjan recently introduced some patches, so AOO can now work

AdoptOpenJDK.
It is available in 32 bit, which is still needed for Windows

I am just doing a build for AOO 4.2.0 with AdaptOpenJDK (8u222)

What do you think?

Mathias;

This sounds like it has great potential as it appears to gives

us a

potential path beyond version 8 as a cursory reading of the

AdoptOpenJDK

web site shows that it supports version 11 and 12 for both both

Windows

32 and 64 bit systems.

I look forward to testing your new version 4.2.0 build with the
AdoptOpenJDK.

You will find them at the usual place:
https://home.apache.org/~mseidel/AOO-builds/AOO-420-Test/

They should be up tomorrow.

Builds are online!

Please test, especially everything related to Java. ;-)

Just do normal tests with everything that is related to Java:

 - Search in online help
 - (some) wizards
 - database
 - ...

The only "special" thing to test would be if the SDK is complete
regarding JavaDoc. But I doubt that anyone had a look at the SDK in the
past years... ;-)
