I'm not a Windows 8 user but at least the system requirements [1] state
that AOO 4.0.1 is compatible with Windows 8.

Yes it can be used on both. I am using it on XP, Vista, 7, 8 & 8.1
computers and have not encountered any difference in operation or

This is OK with me. What is important is that we reset the feedback we
had on the previous RC and that we only count votes on the new RC (RC2
as you called it in the new thread you started).

It must be clear what we are voting upon, and indeed sources for RC2
have been available and announced since yesterday.

I disagree here, we should take into account who does the work.

The from ASF perspective important src release is available since
yesterday evening and I planned to start the vote yesterday but the mail
didn't left my mail program :-(. Everybody who is interested, able or
willing to test this src release can do that since yesterday. No need to
wait on an official vote start.

OK. I did say, "If there are no objections..". It sounds like there
are some concerns, so let's just run the full ceremony run through.

It may be possible to wrap the voting up by the end of the week, but
it will be better (for press coverage) to have the announcement occur
next Monday than at the end of the week. If we aim for Monday that,
hopefully, will give everyone ample time for the vote as well as
post-vote activities.

Sounds good, also an announcement on Tuesday would be not too bad (in case).

Should be enough time for finalizing things like upload to SF, mirror
distribution, release notes, blog post, annoucement, DL website tests, etc.

PMC members are checking signatures and checksums? And we are verifying that
the source tag matches the RC for source? These are guaranteed to change with
the re-spin.

Let's not make a big deal out of our quality process and then skip a REQUIRED
part of the Foundation's process.

- copy it into the OpenOffice program folder, on most systems this

will

be the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program\
- if the system warns you that you are overwriting a program file then
please confirm with YES, as that is exactly what is wanted
- run your tests again that used to crash it

nobody out there who is able to reproduce the problem and can say that
Herbert's fix is solving the problem?

We have reviewed the patch from Herbert with 3 people and the patch is
save. The fix solved the issue for Rob who was able to reproduce the
problem partly before he used the patched library.

Windows 8 becomes more and more important on the desktop and windows is
our main platform. I tend to a respin at the moment but will wait 1-2
hours longer to receive potentially more feedback.

Putting on my Apache Member Hat. I do have an issue with skipping a re-vote.

PMC members are checking signatures and checksums? And we are verifying that
the source tag matches the RC for source? These are guaranteed to change with
the re-spin.

Let's not make a big deal out of our quality process and then skip a REQUIRED

you are fully correct in your statements, I would however still give people

Technically, we're only voting on the source distributions. And the
vote is about whether the source meets Apache legal policy
requirements in terms of license headers, NOTICE file contents,
copyright statement. We're also verifying digital signatures and
checksum hashes, to verify the integrity of the released files.

So if the RC had no problems in these areas then the new RC, that just
changes a few lines of code and does not add any new files or new
components or new dependencies , will also not have any issues. So we
don't really need a 72-hour vote, IMHO. We just need enough time to
double check the signatures and hashes.

The binary install sets are important as well, of course. But we're
not really voting on those. And the vote is not an invitation to
start testing. Testing has been ongoing for a couple months now. The
reason we have a vote is because there are no known serious bugs. We
wouldn't have a vote if there were huge known issues. In this
particular case we missed an issue, obviously. But the solution in
the future to that is more testing effort in the months and weeks
leading up to a release vote. We'll never improve things
substantially by trying to squeeze more testing into a 72-hour voting
window.

-Rob

2013-07-16 Thread Max Merbald

Hi,

I'd also suggest it would be best to include the issues listed by Jürgen
in the other thread. Better to include them than to have complaints by
users, and, possibly, bad press. I don't think there's a need to hurry
things. Another vote wouldn't hurt, would it?

Do we need another 72-hour vote? If there are no objections I'd

To test it please
- download the DLL

be the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program\

I'm reminded of this classic Volkswagen advertisement:

We found the mystery trick. Have Windows File Explorer open.
I overlooked that in my environment because its seems so core to the OS.

Here is the video of the error reproduced: https://t.co/VLAyfSGwQC

This fix sent to me by Herbert Duerr via e-mail fixes the issue.

Simon, Juergen and all,

I have checked the dll on Windows 7 in Writer/Calc/Impress, with steps:
enter "Hello World", Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy, Ctrl-X to cut,
Ctrl-V to paste, and also using menu, like 'Edit' -> 'Copy', 'Cut' or
'Paste'. All above function work without regression.

Re: Possible show stopper on Windows 8, please verify

2013-07-16 Thread Shenfeng Liu
Juergen,
I believe it is a right decision to respin and include this fix. While
besides verifying it on Windows 8, I also asked Yu Zhen to help verify the
dll on Windows 7 to ensure the fix is no impact to Windows 7. Yu Zhen will
update the result within hours.
Thanks very much for your quick turn around on this critical issue!

I think it is critical that it is known as potential problem and the fix seems
to work fine for Rob who were not able to reproduce the issue with the fix.

from my point of view not, I know the code, what we change and I can
live with reviewing the generated patch between the RC and the new build.

And the longer I am thinking about the issue and that it is now known
that there is a potential problem I am getting more confident that we
should do the respin.

I will check what other potential important uncritical fixes can we
include as well. But I would like to have it at a minimum to reduce the
testing effort for the respin.

it is not easy for me to decide at the moment. What do others think? A

An update on this crash. I was eventually able to reproduce it on
Windows 8, 64-bit. This was an initial install, not an upgrade.
Samer saw it on an upgrade install.

I worked on the stack trace with Herbert (fortunately my Windows 8

It appears to work on my machine. We're waiting to hear back from

If anyone else was able to reproduce the problem then we'd love to know
whether the DLL at http://people.apache.org/~hdu/sysdtrans.dll

solves the problem. It contains the patch I suggested in issue 122752.

To test it please
- download the DLL
- copy it into the OpenOffice program folder, on most systems this will
be the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program\
- if the system warns you that you are overwriting a program file then
please confirm with YES, as that is exactly what is wanted

- run your tests again that used to crash it

mmh, that is of course not really satisfying. If it can be 100%
reproduced and the fix will solve the problem I would do a respin. But a
quick one with only a few selected fixes. That should be quite fast and
no complete turn around should be necessary.

I am looking for more feedback on the issue and if the patch solve the
problem ...

I logged my comments in the bug, I searched the db before I opened a new

It is windows 8 64-bit. Crashes on copy and cut. Paste seems to not be

The four steps Rob gave in the bug are the minimum required steps to
reproduce.

There was some discussion of this on another thread. Someone reported
a clipboard crash on Windows 8 with an earlier snapshot (not the RC)
but was not able to reproduce it. I tried yesterday on a clean
Windows 8 install and could not get a crash, copying, pasting, etc.,

But you are saying it is "cut" not copy. I can try that.

Also, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8?

Possible show stopper on Windows 8, please verify

2013-07-15 Thread Samer Mansour
I just got my testlink set up, and received a couple test cases 7 hours ago.

The first test I went to do I couldn't complete because it caused what I
think is a show stopper for windows 8 (if its reproducible)

Can anyone copy or cut contents to their system clipboard in windows 8
using the 4.0.0 RC snapshot? It causes an immediate crash every time for
me.

Here is the bug I opened,

This may very well have been caused by a regression bug I have

OK, that was not very clear :-)

I assume, that an Average Joe user has not installed a snapshot previously
and therefore no config folder \4 exists.
Up to now I have always installed the full versions over my old versions,
and never got problems (or never notice some.)

I'll do some testing tonight. I have two "clean" VM images, for
Windows 8 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, that I can install the AOO 4.0
RC on. Since these are fresh images they don't have any residual
files from previous AOO installs.

I was not able to get a crash with AOO 4.0 RC on Windows 7 64-bit or
Windows 8 32-bit.

I tested Writer in a document with a mix of objects and formats, doing
a lot of editing, formatting, copy/paste and delete operations,
including formatting via the Sidepanel.

This was the en-US version.

So this doesn't look like a "shallow" crash that everyone will see.
But it would be good to narrow it down. For example, has anyone
seen it on a non-German version? Is that a clue? Is a particular
object involved? I tried also with images, drawings, lists, tables,
etc. Was anything more exotic involved?

While I was a QA engineer for OpenOffice at Sun, we had:
++ Crashes that were limited to a particular language
++ Crashes that happened only (exactly) once with every installation.
++ Crashes that happened only after the first start of an installation
++ Of course, crashes that were limited to a particular language
++ ...

Now imagine even a combination of two or more of those preconditions and
you may prefer looking for a needle in a haystack.

Virtualbox for example has the great feature of taking snapshots. That
should be extremely useful to be able to rollback preconditions.

Peter

Mine was a clean new install, not an update. But it is hard to
imagine a scenario where copy or delete operations behave differently
depending on whether the install was an update or not.

Re: Installation on Windows 8, 64bit

2013-07-14 Thread Max Merbald

Hello Rob,

at the time I experienced that crash on Jun 22 in build 9701 no german
version was available, just the US American. However, as I said' I
haven't been able to reproduce that crash since, neither with build 9701
nor with the RC. And I don't remember which panel I may have used
either. It seems it only occurs in very special circumstances.

Yes, that do I mean.

Or is there some other action that reproduces this situation.

I assume, that an Average Joe user has not installed a snapshot previously

Mine was a clean new install, not an update. But it is hard to
imagine a scenario where copy or delete operations behave differently
depending on whether the install was an update or not.

I have not been able to duplicate this. I think more information is needed on
the exact failure case.

(I did encounter a FirstRun "OpenOffice 4.0.0 - Fatal Error" but that was about
dictionary extensions and apparently a bug in the dialog about dictionaries
already installed and the option to replace it with the same version or not.)

Hello Dennis,

it's as you said, you select a part in the text and then you right-click
it and click "copy", i. e. in my case it happened when I was trying to
copy by mouse. But as I said it happened several weeks ago and it hasn't
happened again since. My OS is Win8 64 bit too.

It would certainly be wonderful if someone -- anyone -- could write up
a BZ issue if they think they can reproduce a crash. That would be a
good place to but the exact version number, language, etc. It is
probably relevant to know what application you were running and what
type of content you had selected. Since the Sidepanel is the notable
new thing in this release, it would also be good to know which panel
you were showing at the time of the crash. Perhaps there is an
attribute update bug related to deletion of particular content?

Hi Regina,

I reported the same thing on June 22, but I couldn't reproduce it the
next day. That was not the RC of course but build 9701. I have no idea
what caused it. It doesn't happen right now either, I just tried again.

Hello Dennis,

it's as you said, you select a part in the text and then you right-click
it and click "copy", i. e. in my case it happened when I was trying to
copy by mouse. But as I said it happened several weeks ago and it hasn't
happened again since. My OS is Win8 64 bit too.

Launching OpenOffice on windows 8 after a silent installation

2013-06-27 Thread Alexandro Colorado
Hello,

There are some issues about installing OpenOffice in a Windows 8 desktop:

I can find and launch all the program in "program" folder under my
installation path. (Refer to the attached screenshot)

But I still have two problems:

1. After installation, Openoffice can not be found both in "Programs and
Features" item of control pannel and "All apps" item of Metro UI.

   Whether is this normal?

2. Except going to the program folder, whether can end user launch
openoffice by other method easily?

I haven't found any launch icon or shortcut (including
desktop/metro/system tray icons).

Re: Windows 8 compatibility

2012-12-29 Thread Michael Acevedo
As far as I know, Windows 8 and AOO should work. When you open Apache
OpenOffice, it should work as a classic desktop application since there's
no "Metro" version of Apache OpenOffice available as of now.

At least according to the Microsoft Windows 8 compatibility center, Apache
OpenOffice 3.4 is compatible and does not require any tweaks from the users
end.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win8/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Type=Software&Name=OpenOffice&Vendor=Apache&ModelOrVersion=3&Locale=1033&BreadcrumbPath=Openoffice&tempOsid=win8

Hope you find this helpful.

2012-12-14 Thread Ross Gardler
I use OO on a couple of windows 8 machines (one clean install, one upgrade
from Win 7). I've experienced no problems.

Touch is a problem, as you would imagine it is for most apps designed for
Win7. One of the things MS applcations do is provide a "touch" mode. This
simply puts larger margins around the main interface widgets (all of a
sudden the larger space in the ribbon make sense). Far from perfect but
quite effective.

When doing the UI for 4.0 it might be good to add such a feature.

OpenOffice 3.4.1 is Compatible with Windows 8

2012-12-13 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I was running the Windows 8 Update advisor on my Windows XP SP3 Tablet PC to
see what was incompatible with Windows 8. (I learned that the machine itself
is incompatible - the processor chip does not have NX and Windows 8 will not
install on it.)

But the prize, scrolling down the Compatibility List, was this:

Compatible
...

OpenOffice.org 3.4.1
Apache Software Foundation

Nice.
