The only tooic I may extend it a bit would be the graduation: It's been
almost three years incubating. I don't see how the podling could graduate
given the current shape. Should be discuss alternatives? I'd love to see
that captured in the report.

Re: Podling Report Reminder - September 2018

2018-09-11 Thread Sergio Fernández
I guess community is gonna be hard. In three years most of the contributors
(if not all) come from the same company that donated the original source
base.

Would be an option to graduate as a subproject of an existing TLP? I don't
know, TinkerPop?

Re: State of S2Graph

2018-06-02 Thread Sergio Fernández
Hi John,

I apologise, last month report time was a very bad personal time for me, so
I missed it.

Overall IMO the podling is lacking community growing out of the original
company the source was donated. Very few active committers, a from the same
org. We have discussed few times what could be a viable plan, but we never
reached any conclusion. So maybe it's a goid time to put the topic on the
table for the good of the project.

Greetings,

This is going to be your third incubator release. Since community growth is
not yet reached, do you want to discuss mid-term approaches to exit
Incubator?

Re: [VOTE] Apache S2Graph(incubating) 0.2.0 release RC3

2017-08-12 Thread Sergio Fernández
Hi,

+1 (binding)

So far I've successfully checked:

* signatures and digests
* source releases file layouts
* matched git tags and commit ids
* incubator suffix and disclaimer
* NOTICE and LICENSE files
* license headers
* clean build (Java 1.8.0_131, Scala, 2.11.8, SBT 0.13.12, Debian amd64)

With respect to my vote to RC2:

* S2GRAPH-159 has been fixed.
* S2GRAPH-160 has been minimized, not fixed, but looks much better.
* S2GRAPH-161 is not fully right, because new CHANGES file shows a version
without the incubating suffix. As the file is not part of the release
tarball it should be fine, but would be nice to keep that very clear.

Thanks for the work on this new release!

Cheers,

Re: [VOTE] Apache S2Graph(incubating) 0.2.0 release RC2

2017-08-10 Thread Sergio Fernández
Hi,

apologize for the late vote.

-1 (binding)

So far I've successfully checked:
* signatures and digests
* source releases file layouts
* matched git tags and commit ids
* incubator suffix and disclaimer
* NOTICE and LICENSE files
* license headers
* clean build (Java 1.8.0_131, Scala, 2.11.8, SBT 0.13.12, Debian amd64)

I still got quite some warnings on the build, as happened for
0.1.0-incubating.

But why I vote negatively to the release it isn't any formal requirement,
but a functional error I think should be easy to fix:

$ sh bin/start-s2graph.sh
bin/start-s2graph.sh: 22:
/home/wikier/tmp/s2graph/apache-s2graph-0.2.0-incubating-src/bin/s2graph-env.sh:
Bad substitution

Already reported as S2GRAPH-159. I'll provide a patch to fix it.

BTW, the file https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/s2graph/0.
2.0-incubating-RC2/CHANGES claims changes for "Release 0.1.0 - unreleased".

Best,

Doyung, release candidate would need to get at least 3 binding votes. If
you don't get them from dev@s2graph, you would need to go to
general@incubator. Mentors or not, every IPMC member counts here.

Apologize for not being able to be around much lately. I'm moving to work
to another continent, so last weeks have been very difficult for me.

Thanks Andrew for signing the report.

Thanks. Signed-off.

For the next report I'd like to see some discussion where the project and
the community are going. I fear graduation is now a hard goal given the
evolution of the community during incubation. But we may think about other
options...

Re: [RESULT][VOTE] Release Apache S2Graph 0.1.0-incubation RC6

2016-10-31 Thread Sergio Fernández
(travelling with limited connectivity)

Guys, I guess 0.1.0-incubating would be just a source release. You can't
modify the source that have been voted to release the Maven binary
artifacts. Therefore that needs to be done in a new release, 0.1.1 if you
just want to address the Maven packaging with no new features, 0.2.0 if you
want to wait for new stuff.

BTW, repositoy.apache.org is synced with Maven Central. You should have
access with you ASF accounts, so you can start to push snapshots there
whenever the issue is fixed.

Finally did you push binary maven artifacts to asf nexus? In that case wait
until they get mirrored http://search.maven.org/#search%7Cga%7C1%7Cs2graph
before doing the official announcement.

As far as I understood, such changes affect mainly configuration (timeouts,
limits, offsets, etc), right?
Would not be better to submit a PR to the upstream project to allow to
customize such configurations without modifying the code?

Well, that's not completely right, because: Although it is true the source
is the single binding release, normally projects also publish binary
artifacts to help on its usage/adoption. That's valid for top-level
projects as well as for incubating podlings: incubating releases should be
100% what you'll do after graduation, just its voting process requires some
more intervention by IPMC.

Therefore that's a non-blocking for releasing 0.1.0 RC4, because source
release can be build without using such custom dependency.

BTW, what is org.hbase:asynchbase:1.7.2-S2GRAPH? Where does it come from?
Why is not on Maven Central? If it's a fork from AL2 code that it's only
relevent for S2Graph, you could donate it to the S2Graph podling to have an
easier way to deal with that dependency.

Yes, it would be nice that upcoming releases would provide Maven artifacts
too. I've registered S2GRAPH-115 for tracking that.

Regarding the source release everything looks fine. Therefore my vote is +1

But I have issues running it:

$ ./bin/start-s2graph.sh

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

BTW, I found now documentation about how to run RAT; so inspecting the

-1 (binding): there are files (e.g., bin/example.sh) without proper license

Re: [VOTE] Apache S2Graph(incubating) 0.1.0 release RC3

2016-09-20 Thread Sergio Fernández
Just arrived back from my vacations; I'm gonna check RC3 later, once I got
under control some more urgent things at work.
I wonder why nobody has checked this vote in one week...
Remember that both mentors (binding) and committers (non-binding) have
responsibilities within the project releases.
Checking a release (including the RM) helps you to make better releases in
the future.

No, for what I've checked, that should be enough.

I'll be available tomorrow (Friday 2nd) until 14.00 GMT, in case you manage
to case a new RC before. If not. don't pause the release until I'll be
back, all the other mentors could help you in the process.

Yes, patching the build.sbt with that made the package task work for me:

[info] Done packaging.
[info] Package for distribution located at /home/wikier/tmp/s2graph/apach
e-s2graph-0.1.0-incubating/target/apache-s2graph-0.1.0-incubating-bin

[info] Tarball is located at /home/wikier/tmp/s2graph/apach

[success] Total time: 171 s, completed Sep 1, 2016 3:18:10 PM

In addition to S2GRAPH-104 to fixed the reported issue, checking this
release I also found another issue in the generated tarball (S2GRAPH-105).

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Re: [VOTE] Apache S2Graph(incubating) 0.1.0 release RC2

2016-09-01 Thread Sergio Fernández
Hi Do Yung,

thanks for casting a new release candidate. As I said during the previous
RC, I want to insist the very first release is very important milestone for
a podling.

Here my vote: -1 (binding)

I can't build from the sources given a missing dependency:

[info] Packaging
/home/wikier/tmp/s2graph/apache-s2graph-0.1.0-incubating/s2rest_netty/target/scala-2.11/s2rest_netty_2.11-0.1.0.jar
...
[info] Done packaging.
sbt.ResolveException: unresolved dependency:
org.scalaz.stream#scalaz-stream_2.11;0.7a: not found

For want I've check
http://search.maven.org/#search%7Cga%7C1%7Cg%3A%22org.scalaz.stream%22%20AND%20a%3A%22scalaz-stream_2.11%22
only version 0.8.4a looks to be available from Maven Central.

I tried to build the RC sources in a clean environment: SBT 0.13.9, Scala
2.11.6, OpenJDK 1.8.0_91 64-Bit, Debian amd64

So far I've successfully checked:

* signatures and digests
* source releases file layouts
* matched git tags and commit ids
* incubator suffix and disclaimer, NOTICE and LICENSE files
* license headers,

Thanks for addressing all my comments to RC1 <https://s.apache.org/oarA>.
In addition, some minor comments that would be great to improve:

* I can see quite many warning ("discarding unmoored doc comment", "a type
was inferred to be `Any`; this may indicate a programming error", "Adapting
argument list by creating a 4-tuple: this may not be what you want",
etc) during build that would be better to solve.
* More people should add theirs GPG keys to the project file, just in case
anybody else acts as RM in new releases

If you point me how to sort-out the issue with the missing dependency, I'm
more than happy to revise my vote. But, as I pointer in another email,
remember I'd only have 24 hours from now until I'll go on vacations.

Thanks.

Cheers,

No, in this case is not about embedding ASF's logo in S2Graph's logo, which
could be also a good idea...

That guidelines s more about putting the Incubator stamp
http://incubator.apache.org/images/egg-logo2.png somewhere in the podling
site while incubating. So much easier, no logo re-working needs to be done
at all.

Cheers,

s2graph asf branding

2016-07-01 Thread Sergio Fernández
Those who follow general@incubator, IPMC has started (led by John D.
Ament) to audit podlings' branding:

  https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/BrandingAuditJune2016

The audit still didn't arrive to S2Graph (I think it goes alphabetical).

S2Graph should be fine, because disclaimer is there. But "Podlings websites
SHOULD contain the Apache Incubator Project logo as sign of affiliation".
Since it's a "SHOULD" is fine; but I'd recommend to add the Incubator logo
somewhere in the site template.

Thanks!

OK, clear. Kakao has to find a balance between the community-driven code

So, if I understood correctly, you're keeping your own fork our of Apache
in parallel?!?

There are two issues with that:

1) Technically it's quite confusing then what the project target.
2) Legally Kaka has done a code donation that is just valid for that
concrete code, not for any code the company has put there afterwards.

So we need to sort this our ASAP!

concerned about s2graph community

2016-03-19 Thread Sergio Fernández
Hi,

I've been thinking for a while about this issue... because my current
feeling in that the community has not really landed in ASF. Yes, you are
creating issues, pull requests, commiting code, etc. But there is no much
discussion in the mailing list. For instance, checking the mail archives of
dev@s2graph.a.o
http://markmail.org/search/?q=list%3Aorg.apache.s2graph.dev it's
clear something is happening behind the scenes. I can't find any other
reason how I can be the second most active person (excluding jira and
github bots) in this mailing list.

So that leads me to think that you still meet face-to-face on regular
basis, you privately agree on the next steps and then you behave as you did
before as a company, but just on public coding infrastructure. And that's
not supposed to happen in the Apache Way, where decisions are taken in the
community. Actually there is a common say in Apache: "If it didn't happen
on a mailing list, it didn't happen".

I may be wrong, and I hope to be wrong, but that's my current feeling. So,
my advice as mentor, and actually it's one of the points I stressed when
the project entered incubation, is that you have to focus to grow your
community outside Kakao. For instance, I miss the discussion about the
first release. Such kind of thing, you know.

Cheers,

Fwd: Google Summer of Code 2016 is coming

2016-02-21 Thread Sergio Fernández
FYI

TL;DR: label with gsoc2016 your issues you want to submit as ideas to the
program.

GSoC is a great opportunity to grow your community and/or find someone to
do a concrete tasks nobody can find time.

I've been mentoring for the last couple of years; so feel free to ask me
any further question.

To: ment...@community.apache.org

Hello PMCs (incubator Mentors, please forward this email to your podlings),

Google Summer of Code [1] is a program sponsored by Google allowing
students to spend their summer
working on open source software. Students will receive stipends for
developing open source software
full-time for three months. Projects will provide mentoring and project
ideas, and in return have
the chance to get new code developed and - most importantly - to identify
and bring in new committers.

The ASF will apply as a participating organization meaning individual
projects don't have to apply
separately.

If you want to participate with your project we ask you to do the following
things as soon as
possible but by no later than 2016-02-19:

1. understand what it means to be a mentor [2].

2. record your project ideas.

Just create issues in JIRA, label them with gsoc2016, and they will show up
at [3]. Please be as
specific as possible when describing your idea. Include the programming
language, the tools and
skills required, but try not to scare potential students away. They are
supposed to learn what's
required before the program starts.

Use labels, e.g. for the programming language (java, c, c++, erlang,
python, brainfuck, ...) or
technology area (cloud, xml, web, foo, bar, ...).

Please use the COMDEV JIRA project for recording your ideas if your project
doesn't use JIRA (e.g.
httpd, ooo). Contact d...@community.apache.org if you need assistance.

[4] contains some additional information (will be updated for 2016 shortly).

3. subscribe to ment...@community.apache.org; restricted to potential
mentors, meant to be used as a
private list - general discussions on the public d...@community.apache.org
list as much as possible
please). Use a recognized address when subscribing (@apache.org or one of
your alias addresses on
record).

Note that the ASF isn't accepted as a participating organization yet,
nevertheless you *have to*
start recording your ideas now or we will not get accepted.

Over the years we were able to complete hundreds of projects successfully.
Some of our prior
students are active contributors now! Let's make this year a success again!

Cheers,

Uli

Any progress on this, Hyunsik?

As a community, you have to start to learn to deal with these formalities
of the foundation as a team; if someone has time for doing it, just share
the draft and others will provide feedback.

Re: January 2016 Report

2016-01-04 Thread Sergio Fernández
As this is the first time the project report, I think this needs some
help...

On a regular basis (monthly for the first three months, quarterly
thereafter), each incubating project reports to Incubator PMC. The report
contains the status of the podling at reporting date, including the most
important things. The PPMC doesn't have to fill out the report itself;
reports are aggregated in the wiki and all later sent to the ASF Board.
You have further details at
http://incubator.apache.org/guides/ppmc.html#Incubator+ASF+Board+Reports

With the notice from IPMC, you will always get a template to fill in your
report in the wiki: https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/January2016 Since the
project is just starting incubation, the report is very simple to write.
Check examples from other podlings if you need, or ask your mentors. If by
Tuesday 5th afternoon (CET) nobody has drafted it, I'll propose an initial
version.

Cheers,
