Re: interest in having Mozilla officially represented at the C++ Standards Committee?
At this stage, I'm just looking to assess the level of interest from our C++ developers. If there is interest, I will look into the processes involved in more detail. I think we have enough interesting uses of C++ that it is in our interest to participate. In terms of time commitment, you seem to have the interest in attending, are you volunteering? Assuming that I meet the requirements for membership in a national standards body and no one else is clamouring for the role, yes, definitely :) I have applied to become a member of the Canadian delegation to the C++ Standards Committee, and my application was successful. There is no fee associated with this membership. What this means for Mozilla is that we have the potential to have a greater voice in the decisions made by the Committee, as the head of the Canadian delegation determines Canada's vote on proposals being considered by the Committee by consulting with the members of the delegation. I will be attending the next C++ Standards Committee meeting, which is in February, and I plan to attend future ones if I am able to. I will keep an eye out for issues that might be of particular interest to the Mozilla community, and bring them to people's awareness (probably by posting here on dev-platform). If there are any issues/topics that you are interested in / would like me to keep an eye on, please let me know! (Several people did so already in this thread [1]). For a recap of what is slated to go into C++14 and follow-up Technical Specifications, see [2] and [3]. interest in having Mozilla officially represented at the C++ Standards Committee?
Hi everyone, Judging by the responses to my thread [1] about the C++ Standards Committee meeting a couple of weeks ago, there seems to be a fair bit of interest in the standardization of some new C++ language features and libraries. A lot of the committee members are engineers at companies with large C++ codebases that have a stake in the future of the language. It occurred to me that Mozilla is such a company, and we are not currently represented by anyone on the committee. Official representation at the committee would give Mozilla the ability to have a voice in discussions of existing proposals, make new proposals, and vote for acceptance/rejection of proposals. It would allow us to participate in the design of future C++ features that may affect us in significant ways, such as reflection and modules. Is there any interest in having Mozilla be officially represented at the C++ Standards Committee? I think this is a great idea, unless there are severe financial/contractual obligations! Re: interest in having Mozilla officially represented at the C++ Standards Committee?
I think this is a great idea, unless there are severe financial/contractual obligations! The cost of participating in committee meetings is simply that of sending someone to attend them. They are 1 week long, and happen 2-3 times a year in locations that rotate between North America and Europe. The cost of becoming a voting member depends on which national body you go through (the committee is composed of delegations from national standards bodies). As a US-based company, we can go through the US standards body, which I believe is a simple process but involves an annual fee. We can also go through the Canadian standards body, which I believe is free but involves a longer process. I haven't looked into this in detail, though. At this stage, I'm just looking to assess the level of interest from our C++ developers. If there is interest, I will look into the processes involved in more detail. I actually asked about this a couple months ago (with the goal of being one of the representatives). I'm glad to see there's some more traction on this, since I think it's pretty important for us to be involved with the C++ standardization process. I'm also still happy to help out by working with the standards committee, assuming 1) this is something Mozilla chooses to do, and 2) there's space for me to join in. - Jim ___ dev-platform mailing list dev-platform@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/dev-platform
