Need perl help to remove dpkg dependency on licensecheck (devscripts-minimal)

Hi Recent versions of devscripts-minimal (containing licensecheck) began depending on dpkg-perl due to [1]. Unfortunately I'm quite unfamiliar with perl, can anyone suggest an alternative way to accomplish the same which does not use spawn from Dpkg::IPC? Thanks Sandro [1]
