Hi all,

Tuesday, at the monthly OLPC France meeting we made a comparison of the boot
time from XO 1.75, XO 1.5 and XO 1.0.

Have a look of the result on the video here:

Yay! I'm looking forward to testing this one! Gotta give it a couple
hours to be on the mirrors :-)

Its signed and on its way out to the mirrors.

yum list openoffice, org* will give you a list of a lot of packages
including various language packs. yum groupinstall office should
give you all the core bits.

how does OOo compare in compiled size with Libreoffice (which is what most
distros are shipping nowdays). I know that Libreoffice has removed a ton of
unused source from the project, but I don't know what the result is in terms
of the size of the binary.

Mute point really, the major reductions in size are in the latest
devel release and it would be significant work to get that into the
11.3.x release for either the x86 or arm platforms. Significant work
that would likely need library updates and various changes so not
something we're going to do for already stable 11.3.x.

On the other hand for the 12.x releases we'll get the latest version
for free as we're rebasing to F-17.

I believe Hernan Pachas expressed interest in using this sort of
information for the formulation of Peru's next image.

I think the Activity Team may find uses for the information in this form.

I will certainly be using the i18n / L10n information to investigate
the possibility of soliciting more PO files for the Honey project by
pestering developers about i18n.

I hope someone has posted about this to the testing list as I suspect
our friends in the New Zealand testing crew would find such a
spreadsheet useful in their own work,

http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/testing

IMHO, compilations of information like this tend to have value that is
not always immediately apparent and it is important that they be
discoverable (e.g .linked from the correct places in the wikis). It
is also important tha tthey be easy to keep current to maintain their
value over time.

Thank you (both Alan and Tom) for the work you've put into this.

11.3.1 development build 25 for XO-1.75

2012-01-19 Thread Martin Langhoff
This build includes several bugfixes in the graphics driver and sets
AVC touchpad configuration to the desired 4F settings.

Download from:

  http://build.laptop.org/11.3.1/os25/

Notes:

 - An earlier accidental update to TurtleArt 130, has been reverted.

 - The kernel is still configured to disable serial output during
suspend/resume -- this helps s/r stability. As a result,
output over the serial port is less useful than in previous builds.

Fixes (please help us confirm):

#11196 some 1.75 touchpads wander in ebook mode
#11321 Write freezes laptop on scrolling
#11399 [CL2]Press enter many times in write activity and system will hang up.
#11350 Cursor has dots around it
#11430 Xv / mmp-camera output corrupt after suspend/resume
#11256 Browse scrolling freezes session
#11489 HW Cursor corrupt after S/R

2012-01-19 Thread Gonzalo Odiard
I agree with Chris, this is a good job, but will take time to the developers
to use it.

There are a few things you can do to help:

* Create a page in the wiki explaining what you did and pointing to the
google doc,
if not will be lost in the mailing list.

* You can request be a Editor in ASLO, and change the compatibility field
in the activities
you know are working. (I think Rafael dir...@gmail.com or Aleksey Lim

can give you permissions)

Thanks for doing this work, don't give up! :)

Re: [support-gang] XO Boot time battle

2012-01-19 Thread Yioryos Asprobounitis
I'm glad to see that the XO-1.75 is doing so well.
I'm a bit skeptical about the XO-1 though.Did it have a jffs2 or a ubi
image? Boot time depends to a big extend to read/decompression speeds so this
may be important. It also depends on services initiated.  Looked like that for
the longest time the XO-1 was trying to connect unsuccessfully.
XO-1.xx may very well be twice as fast as the XO-1 but not on boot time. XO-1
does 1 to 1.5 minutes depending on the image.

I deleted these packages from the OOB cache and tried after a while
and it worked. However, shouldn't we check for rpm package integrity
(content-type) while downloading via pycurl/libcurl and move to
another mirror in case of corruption or inconsistent file-type?

That's the right workaround for a silly bug... somewhere in imgcreate
libraries of the livecd-tools fedora package...

Actually, it's easier: the code is downloading stuff with pycurl, and
ignoring whether pycurl gets any error. A simple check on pycurl http
status should be enough to retry or fail early, and avoid polluting
the cache.

cheers,

RE: XO Boot time battle

2012-01-19 Thread Lionel Laské

 All are recently flashed?

@Alan and @ Yioryos

Here is the detail of config used :

- XO 1.75 is on Q4C10 with 11.3.0

- XO 1.5 is on Q3B22 with 11.3.0

- XO 1.0 is on Q2E41 with 802 (it’s the config we’re using on our
Madagascar deployment)

Did you compare the speed during other tasks? video recording/playing,
access to Internet, etc?

@Claudia

We didn’t measure speed for other tasks but XO 1.75 seems really to do all
tasks more quickly than other XO versions.

Shutdown time is very quick too.

Lionel.
