SENIOR USER EXPERIENCE ENGINEER
Ensuring a compelling, intuitive user experience is a key strategic
priority for our company and we are looking for a senior engineer to
help take our web applications to the next level. We seek an
innovative, hands-on leader who will work closely with product

Creating the prototype typically takes a few more days, depending on how
complex it needs to be. iQuery has been a *huge* time-saver here, as has

Most of us know how to enter time without typos; the only tricky part is
dealing with times between 0:00 and 12:59 that are unmarked with am/pm.
So it seems like the simplest approach would be a text-entry box with
decent validation and a hint (e.g., You can enter time like 2:30pm or
14:30).
We recently went through a similar redesign. Through extensive card
sorting and usability testing of new and experienced users, we found
that keeping the old (albeit non-ideal) terminology was often the best
compromise. Experienced users just got too lost if we renamed functions
and topics that

another purpose, making that idea more difficult to implement, as well.
Other ideas are welcomed.

Though it's light on implementation, I hope this idea is useful. I
haven't actually implemented it, so I'll be interested to learn if
others see pitfalls.
I think the issue isn't dialup vs. broadband, it's simply speed of
rendering; even broadband connections can be slow at times. Therefore, I

Here, it's usually the Product Manager who gathers the requirements from
customers, prospects, and other business stakeholders and decides what
use cases need to be changed or supported. Occasionally I'll ride
along but not often, both because of time constraints and because the
requirements do
Also, testing search functionality is *not* possible until the very end
of release which naturally limits any actions to be taken based on
results of user testing.
...Just to play devil's advocate, why not? You could create some working
prototypes to test this before development. Prototypes may
In our training institutions, we don't have an equivalent notion to
resident rotation, where those new to the field get to experience the
entire thing, then choose their specialty.
That may be true; I didn't go to school for UX. But I'd argue that
start-ups provide this type of skills rotation.
Influence is ideal, if the designer has mastery of the subject area and
market. Failing that -- or in addition to it -- insight into the reasons
behind the strategy is almost as important.
If I'm simply told to design Feature X, I'll do the best I can with it,
given what I know about its context
(or if we expected to introduce a consistent set
of right-click menus throughout the app), the right-click menus might
have made more sense. However, for our users and usage patterns, the
better option was to make these functions visible in the UI.

I'm trying to find a better way to do usability test analysis.
My current approach is: after i finish a usability study, with 8 or 10
users, and collected my own and all observers' notes, I usually read all

Interesting article on a redesign of the common milk jug, its

I'm again reminded that change management is a fundamental part of
Interaction Design.
There's nothing necessarily wrong with the term unsophisticated,
though new or novice might be more neutral. However, it sounds as if
the developers product folks in your organization have a specific
perception of the typical end-user that no new phrase is going to
change. If it's important to
