Hello Ben,

As i would look at this is open the PDF in a separate window. This
allows the user to go on with his work. Opening the PDF in the same
browser window is frustrating as PDF is not meant for web.
I think Adobe should work on their Acrobat solution and also provide
a far more advanced optimising tool for the PDF to be converted to

that.

I think there's a wishful side of us all that hopes business picks up,
whatever our businesses may be. But Citibank just posted a net loss of
2.5 billion dollars from people having trouble paying home, auto, and
credit card debt. The effect of high gas prices on e-commerce may be
just a blip compared to the effects of job losses, hiring freezes,
empty storefronts, and foreclosures. I'm pretty sure that people will
continue to buy food and gas and other necessities. Readers will
continue to buy books - they can't help it. Internet services, like
online banking, will endure. But consumer luxuries purchased online?
Ouch.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Opening PDFs

2008-07-18 Thread Peter Ryan
Sachin,

Like any application, Acrobat has its own set of pitfalls when you're trying
to make PDFs accessible to web use. Acrobat professional does have a set of
tools for optimizing files for web-based viewing. It all depends upon how
the file was created and its original intent for use. There are more
variables in play than just thinking the format is unsuitable for web use.
If you're a MAC user, you may find preview is a more acceptable means of
viewing the format via the web.

There are plenty of problems associated with using javascript, for instance,
with certain browsers, but that does not mean that it is impossible to use.
Creating the file for use on the web is where it starts. Oftentimes, one has
to deal with a file that was created for print.

I know adobe has been tinkering with the format over the past few years, but
the main issue is that print still relies upon the format so heavily to
transmit information. So we're stuck for now.

I do agree that separate windows is always the best way to view files.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has done presentation for developers to show them
why is UX design relevant for them (not just designer's job) and offer them
practical tips. I've found many presentations on why UX is important, but
haven't found a lot tailor to the developer audience. I'm interested in
pratical tips that developers can apply to their work.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Practical UX tips for developers

2008-07-18 Thread Santiago Bustelo
We have recently done a 45' presentation for software architects and
developers at Microsoft´s RAF 2008 and MIX Essentials, Buenos Aires.

Summarized translation available at:
http://www.icograma.com/articles/raf2008.en.php

Additional notes about rhetorical strategies used:

INTERACTION DESIGN IN THE 21ST CENTURY

We shared childhood dreams and passion for technology with the
audience,
set an ambitious goal (a better world),
and established interaction design as an understandable and
achievable mean for the audience to that end.

THE CAVEMAN PROGRAMMER

The demo was received with open laughs and guilty smiling nods.
Displayed atrocities were a 'little secret' we shared with the
audience.

After the demo, the audience was aware that something was wrong.
But no one was able to point out what the problems were.
We had them interested in knowing the answer.

THE USER

Huffman encoded design (or huffman encoded interface) is a
metaphor we found appropiate for programmers to understand interface
design tradeoffs.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Contextual awareness on mobile apps

2008-07-18 Thread Sherwin
http://www.podmo.com/ is a Bluetooth based contextually aware network.
Good thing about Bluetooth: Will work just about anywhere with nodes,
which is also the biggest down-side. The people in Podmo have managed
to get the most popular coffee franchise in Adelaide to hop on the
bandwagon and set up posts in all their outlets. This provides good
cover in areas of the city where these cafes are.

GPS while being the most accurate and widely available means of
contextual awareness still seems to face some reliability issues on
phones.

Nokias have A-GPS, which means that phones triangulate a general
location and connect to a server via the phone's internet to get a
list of the closest satellites to connect to. This is great, but then
it won't be able to connect in areas where there is no reception, and
I've found this to be Nokia centric. I've got a Samsung i550w with
GPS, but I'm unable to use Nokia's location service.

This might be changing and it seems most people are happy with the
GPS on the new iPhone and I am confident that with convergence
rolling more of our devices together, the day will come soon that GPS
on phones is the norm. Nokia is already including geotagging into some
of their newer model phones.

People are demanding more and more from their mobile apps, and
contextual awareness it would seem is the way to go.

I agree that one of the biggest issues with such applications is
cross platform compatiblity. Where I'm working we've been thinking
about how to go about building a mobile app for our purposes, but
because we're a small crew we find it's difficult for us to commit
to one platform.

It would seem however, that J2ME would appear to be closest to being
the most widely accepted platform to work off but then the problem is
that it isn't supported by the iPhone (yet) which will likely bring
in the highest number of users.

Most of the times I like to make %u2018modal changes%u2019 explicitly.

Therefore, if I have to add a link to a PDF I write something like
this:

My document (PDF, 1.2Mb)

The standard Adobe PDF icon as in the Apple Investor Relations SEC
Filings page is also useful as is clearly saying that the link is
pointing to a PDF file.

As a user I prefer the dialog box asking me what to do because I
don't like viewing PDFs on my browser.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Opening PDFs

2008-07-18 Thread Michael Andrews
I've never done research on this, so can't say what most people
want, but my personal perference (always dangerous to base decisions
on) is to open the PDF in the browser.

Most PDFs are rubbish in terms of content. Users don't care to save
them, and don't want to have to delete a saved copy from their hard
disk. Generally someone was too lazy to supply a web version of the
content, so the user has to endure a PDF version.

The download happens regardless of if the file is saved, or is simply
displayed. Users need to know they are about to see a PDF prior to
clicking the link. But don't make them go through another step of
asking if they want to view or save it. They can save it easily
enough after viewing it in the browser.

That said, the one problem I find to viewing a PDF in the browser is
the struggle to search on keywords or view a table of contents.
Everyone wants to scan long documents, and long PDFs don't allow
that in a browser. All the more reason PDF versions of content
shouldn't be offered unless their is a specific need for a print
formated version of the content.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IDEA awards: Interactive Product Experiences

2008-07-18 Thread Shaun Bergmann
Beautiful!
I for one am really looking forward to the day when there are entries for
conglomerate interfaces like the ones which control commercial or
residential automation. (IE Crestron or AMX) These touchpanels control a
dizzying array of systems. The scope of interaction on this one device
ranges from the Big Picture 'macro' of controlling things like lighting,
Heating/Air conditioning, security etc for the entire home / office, down to
the 'micro' interactions of controlling an MP3 player, a DVD library (or
setting an alarm clock for the bedroom).

To be honest, most of the interfaces like this that are installed out there
are terrible. No offence intended to who installed them, but time and time
again I hear of people who have spent over a million dollars to have one of
these state-of-the-art systems installed in their residence, only to find
that they only use about 20% of the system because they just can't figure
it out.

That's certainly no strike against the user. Most of the time these
interfaces have been designed by the system engineer who lives in the world
of speaker cable, decibels, amperages, throw distances, matrix switchers and
HDMI connectors. It all makes perfect sense to them.

I've also seen some pretty stunning examples of how to take a ridiculously
complicated system and present it as though it was as simple a thing to use
as a lightswitch.
These types of conglomerate interfaces are going to catch up. They'll
slowly start to realize and understand what's been happening over in the
computer world for the last 30 years, but it would be nice to put a bit of a
fire under the chair of the companies responsible for designing these things
and have awards available.

Anybody have suggestions on how to inspire new categories with the IDEA
people?

2008-07-18 Thread Robert Reimann
One piece of the energy equation that people don't always take into account
with online services is the cost of the IT infrastructure required to do
business. Giant server farms like Amazon's or Google's require enormous
amounts of power to run and keep cool. There's a reason why the Pacific NW
is a home to many of these server farms: Washington state is 80% powered by
hydroelectricity, and Idaho uses 100% hydro power.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] [Iai-Members] Label Suggestions Needed

2008-07-18 Thread Kim Bieler
I see a lot of sites using My for these kinds of activities, like
My Account, or My AgencyName.

That said, slotting file a claim and change my address under the
same menu item seems dodgy since they're totally different kinds of
tasks with different priority levels, I would have thought.

I agree with Austin -- maybe an open card sort is called for. You
might find that customers don't want all these activities grouped
together.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Information Architect Runs for Office

2008-07-18 Thread mark schraad
Yes it does matter - at least to me. There is a small area of
geography that includes Lawrence (the University of Kansas) and the
western suburbs of Kansas City that lean away from that scary thought
control right. There is a yet smaller group that practice this thing
called design who are horrified by the name 'intelligent design' as
taken by that particular group.

BTW, check out his source code! Funny little thing in there. I'm tempted to
do it, just for the hell of it.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Information Architect Runs for Office

2008-07-18 Thread Will Evans
That is both funny and kewl and I think I may do it as well, just for the
solidarity aspect.

I may be coming around - they fact that he has the nutsack to say he is an
IA - and running for office - deserves a bit of respect. The fact that he
has a blog - and responds to people means he actually wants to engage in
dialogue - unlike some politicians that have their multifarious and
multitudinous minions do it for them and hire big name agencies who get
social media to design sites for them. At least this guy appears to be a
DIY.
