As I don't want to arrive in the conference with broken bones I was thinking about going to Whistler after the conference But I don't want to go alone.. Anyone going after the conference? Re: [IxDA Discuss] Design for impulse Behavior Economics
(Fabricant begins his article by asserting that interaction design central to solving the major issues facing our society today) but the blog post suffers from an unbearable lightness of being, and provides scant example of places where interaction design and behavioral economics intersect to solve problems and ends with an example that is all social psychology (the fact that the virginity pledges/ring exchange campaign is a dismal failure at achieving positive/longterm/real results - but this thing while interesting, has no tie-in to interaction design. While I applaud a few people that are pulling from social psych/behavioral econ to inform design and write significant'y about it (Bryce on rep systems, Porter in his book, Adrian Chan in Everything he writes), this blog post wasn't an informative one. No there - there. I agree, but it's tough to reconcile with a community of practice who overwhelmingly limit themselves to the digital realm and deny the problems Fabricant describes as legitimate areas of inquiry. Transformation design is a better model for designers who are interested in large scale behavioral change. It's a nascent discipline being pioneered in the UK by Hilary Cottam from the Design Council and now at Participle, and to an extent by IDEO in the US. // jeff . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Todd and I talked a lot on the phone about this, and it was just easier to take off from Saturday to the following Sunday - be gone all week, and have two whole work weeks bookend the conference. We also decided to be intentionally open, meaning we will post where we are going to be, when, and how you can hook up with us using the crowdvine site as well as twitter as the most effective means of un-organizing it - come, hangout, don't, but if you do, here is where we are and when - using crowdvine worked last year at interactions|08 for this kind of crowdorganizing random social events. Re: [IxDA Discuss] ThoughtPile.org
I liked the content, I would have loved the interface more if there was semantic richness to the nodes with something like a clustering/affinity for related quotes based on context and other attributes - some combining the content with a visualization like visual thesaurus, to show linked concepts. Also when when node is in focus, click on another simply resets the graph, but doesn't switch focus :-( On Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 3:45 PM, Rob Tannen [EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote: I recommend taking a look at http://thoughtpile.org/ , Herman Miller's web site, for a visually remarkable interface. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Design for impulse Behavior Economics
That's an interesting piece - 'Design for Impulse' is another variation to reference! I've been researching what I call 'Design with Intent' ( http://architectures.danlockton.co.uk/what-is-design-with-intent/ ) for a few years now, more recently (for my PhD at Brunel in London) focused on influencing more sustainable use of products and systems ( http://architectures.danlockton.co.uk/design-for-sustainable-behaviour/ ) rather than health issues, but many of the same techniques can be applied (and that's an important part of the research). The basic message is: *We know that design influences behavior, so lets's try and do something good with that*. We're trying to develop a method for helping designers choose which techniques are most applicable to which kinds of desired behavior change, and which type of approach (enabling/motivating/constraining behavior) is most likely to succeed in different contexts. Compare also the work of BJ Fogg and others working on Persuasive Technology' as a discipline - http://captology.stanford.edu/ It's clear that behavioral economics, specifically a deeper understanding of cognitive biases and heuristics, can be immensely important for designing interactions and understanding how to influence users. Richard Thaler calls this 'choice architecture' ( http://architectures.danlockton.co.uk/2008/06/10/nudges-and-the-power-of-choice-architecture/) but in a sense it's what designers of many stripes have been doing for years. We all know that placing some item at eye level makes it more likely that people will choose it; we put chairs round a table if we intend that people sit down; we (not always!) make sure a handle has the perceived affordance of a handle if we want people to pull it. Yet as a principle - obvious as it is - it's not often taught explicitly to designers or architects (or human factors engineers / ergonomists, for whom it really could be a fundamental part of the profession). Buckminster Fuller understood this - *I made up my mind... that I would never try to reform man — that's much too difficult. What I would do was to try to modify the environment in such a way as to get man moving in preferred directions - but it's *quite rare to hear it expressed formally as part of a design course. This seems maybe a good time to announce a new discussion group - Design and Behavior (http://designandbehavior.com ) - to fellow IxDA members - myself and Debra Lilley from Loughborough University, set it up last month and we have about 100 members so far who are working in this kind of field of examining how the design of systems influences user behavior, and how this knowledge might be applied for social benefit. I was holding off on announcing it here until we had a few more discussions going, but please, anyone who's interested, feel free to have a look or get involved. Thanks Dave for bringing this up - if you *do* intend to include this sort of stuff on your course, I'd be happy to help! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Design for impulse Behavior Economics
Just this weekend I was chatting about Thanksgiving travel experiences with friends, and I was confronted with an example of interaction design affecting group behavior. I heard story after story of people battling over the right/ability to recline their seats during the flight, and the fairly extreme behavior of people who did NOT want the seat in front of them to recline. It seems to me that airplane interiors designed to fit in as many seats as possible plus the potential interaction of the seat recline is an experience engineered to turn the passengers into (passive) aggressive territorial jerks. I don't have a solution in mind, but I'm sure that some good IxD work could be done to improve in-flight behavior. -Sarah Mitchell . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Design for impulse Behavior Economics
This article made me think of unintended consequences. For example, Bruce Schneier wrote in his book Beyond Fear how the increase in secure car ignitions (that can't be hardwired) led to an increase in the number of carjackings in Russia. In this case, the immediate design outcome was to make the car's ignition more secure, but the impact seems to endanger the car's occupants. [IxDA Discuss] Job: Website Design. Loc: NYC/ off site. CO: Ariel Partners: Recruiter/Part time / Contract / Ongoing
Ariel Partners, an IT Consulting and Business Solutions firm in NYC is currently seeking to engage a Designer(s) to redesign their Website and for Design of an Application Development tool. The initiative would not require on site work; only periodic meetings in midtown offices to incorporate input and content from principals and ongoing communication and coordination throughout the process. Project will work on an hourly rate and Designer need not work full time. More interested in overall result in a reasonable deliberate time frame as opposed to rapid roll out. Referrals welcomed * WEB DESIGNER** * Designing for two internal projects: a website redesign and a new web application. Web application interface should look and feel like a cross between web 2.0 (such as facebook) and an excel spreadsheet. Design beautiful web 2.0 high fidelity html interfaces. Ideal candidate will be very familiar with the web 2.0 paradigm and understand what can be done and what cannot be done, and how web 2.0 applications generally work. Artist should have experience with and work natively in DreamWeaver or similar HTML -output tool. Emphasis is on aesthetics via CSS and nice graphic images in addition to Wireframes/Design layout. AJAX or JavaScript, not required but a helpful plus. Experience with CSS preferred. Behavior not required. HTML hand coding not required. Goal is to enhance look and feel with provocative design. Design the interface for new application. Ariel Partners is building a graphics library of high quality glossy PhotoShop and illustrator images and archives large volumes of high quality copy including introductions, whitepapers, and backgrounders. Appropriate selections to be incorporated. Requires a Web Designer capable of putting together a redesign, assimilating library of the images and content, incorporate branding concepts and create: ·Askin for the new site ·A set of storyboards ·Overall theme ·Identify holes, places where we are missing images, content etc. This will be a complex lengthy effort that will require regular meetings spaced out over a protracted period to accommodate competing priorities and existing schedules; warranting a phased roll out approach. The strategy would be to define overall theme and layout; then incrementally implement aesthetic improvements to establish framework. This would be followed by 1 or 2 subsequent phases of improvements and extensions The site also needs to have an iphone optimized version; automatically redirected to iphone.arielpartners.com . So two versions of the website are actually required An in-house development product also needs to be developed, and a designer is needed to provide high fidelity HTML mockups and work with the team as the design evolves. [IxDA Discuss] Date display formats in tables
Which date formats are most readable (and comparable), if you are looking at rows of data in a table (where each row has a date)? Also when when node is in focus, click on another simply resets the graph, but doesn't switch focus :-( A click anywhere resets the graph. A click captured by a node (the node displays as solid) does switch focus. I think only nodes deeper than the current one can do this. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Public Transportation Experiences
http://www.transportdirect.info/web2/home.aspx?repeatingloop=Y This site has been set up in England (and maybe the rest of the UK). It brings together train, bus, car and walking. This is a area which is exceptionally important as integration is important if public transport is to take off. As far as I know it is not very widely used, but it is a good example of how complex merging all this data is, both technically and interaction design wise. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Inactive UI elements: disable or disappear?
I tend to agree with Will here; a couple of years ago I was working for a company in the UK. The software gave users access to different functions or features depending on their permissions, but the developers opted to make all functions show while those that were unavailable were greyed out. While this made sense to the developers (not sure why though), the users couldn't understand why they were not able use a particular function, even though it was shown. The helpdesk received numerous calls regarding these greyed out functions from users who thought that there were problems with the software as functions were greyed out. I think that it is also perhaps worth considering the kinds of users who will be using the software; Will white-collar users understand differently than blue-collar workers? Will you need different design considerations based on the socio-economic group of your [potential] users? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Public Transportation Experiences
The Shanghai metro has expanded rapidly over the last 5 years (about 6 lines added) and will continue to do so upto the World Expo in 2010 (13 lines in total!). Sometimes it can be confusing to navigate around the possible interchange stations. The following website is really useful; http://www.exploreshanghai.com/metro/ It has a complete map of the current metro network and you can drag between your start and end station and it will calculate the price time taken! Also it gives the first and last train times for all stations. Karl . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Visual design for high-volume government and news websites
Hi, everyone! I'm a senior UX professional working on the new iteration of a government website that's been around in some form or other for about 10 years. Among specialists in the field, it's well known, but it's also expected to address the public. This iteration represents a complete overhaul in terms of output and purpose. The project is at a stage now where we're starting to look at visual design issues and at this point, having read widely on this, I wanted to ask you for your insights. I'll try to keep the details as brief as possible. *** THE DETAILS *** The intended website's primary functions are as follows: * Deliver policy information * Announce news, press releases and legal outcomes * Cover special events * Provide current and historical statistics Studying the current website has shown us that, although our role ostensibly is to represent a governmental function, we are actually performing many of the activities of online journalism. Previous iterations have not reflected this growing trend. In the new version, we'll need to be able to: * React very quickly to new developments * Assign proper visual weighting to information of a variety of types * Balance the needs of presenting volatile and static information *** THE QUESTION(s) *** 1. Do you know of any high-volume government or news websites, perhaps in your country or in others, that you would rate somewhere between very effective and superb for delivering complex, sometimes time-sensitive information such as policies and statistics? 2. Do you know of any hefty websites in which you consider the typography and grid systems to be exemplary? I'm especially interested in sites that use these to react robustly to frequent change. 3. Do you have any words of warning (encouragement is also welcome ;-D) or cautionary tales along the lines described above? It's a long post, so thanks for your patience if you read this far! I'd love to hear your thoughts now. Thx, Mike Padgett www.mikepadgett.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! To post to this list ... Re: [IxDA Discuss] Paper Form Design Usability
Rob, I sense you question isn't fully answered regarding paper forms, so I will offer a good, if difficult, recommendation. The best discussion I've seen of paper forms in is the Style Manual 6th edition of the Commonwealth of Australia, published by John Wiley Australia ISBN 0-7016-3648-3. The chapter on forms (chapter 20) is only 15 pages, but is very modern in its discussion of user centered approaches and graphic treatments. I understand that David Sless, an Aussie who is a major researcher of forms, contributed to the chapter. (I am guessing Caroline Jarret would approve??) Unfortunately, the books isn't widely sold outside Australia (I bought mine while living in New Zealand.) It is an example of wonderful book that isn't available globally (so much for the global village). It covers all kinds of graphic design issues with sensibility. Sorry to offer a recommendation that isn't easy to get, but if you are motivated, you might find the effort worthwhile. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Date display formats in tables
If users will be scanning the date column, a format (all but your 1st 6th sixth example) that pads the numerical value will be easiest to scan - and compare. You mention a US audience, but assumptions of Month/Day/Year can still lead to ambiguities. I'd suggest spelling out the month, and then padding the day and year Dec 31, 2008 Jan 01, 2009 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
