I discuss OVID in the Object Modeling and User Interface Design book I
mentioned earlier and update it to use UML notation (Scott Insensee,
Dave Roberts and co used one of the earlier OO notations, I forget
which).

The OVID book is still available, BTW:

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Personas: how many is too many?

2010-02-18 Thread Challis Hodge
It sounds as they're looking for market segmentation rather than
personas. Personas should be built in a way that the fewest possible
can represent the needs of all. This facilitates efficiency in design.
Market segmentation and resulting profiles can be quite complex,
detailed and specific to facilitate marketing needs.

So one way to answer the question is: no more than you can effectively
and efficiently design for. Which for me tends to max out somewhere
around 5, 6 or 7.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Personas: how many is too many?

2010-02-18 Thread Anindita
Hey.. This is an interesting topic since I have been in this position
myself before. I was able to convince my client that these many
personas would mean additional expenses in terms of development,
maintenance and management of requirements. But if your clients
aren't too concerned about their budget (which is a novelty I might
add.. enjoy it :)) what you could consider is to identify why they
would consider 15 personas to start with. The way we do user groups
is to consider all possible user groups and identify which are the
primary user groups and which are secondary. Primary users would the
ones that cover a majority of the tasks/requirements. This will
really help identify which user groups are a mild version of each
other and which ones really need to developed. Since we would need to
tie back design decisions with each persona to justify decisions it
would be good to design to the x number of personas that cover close
to 90% of your requirements. This almost always winds down to being
3-5 personas for me. Hope this helps!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sketching before the Wireframes

2010-02-18 Thread ed rice
I am sitting down to start some wireframes right now. First I will
sketch. Then finalize them in omnigraffle.

I recently test wireframes as an interactive prototype and found
several problems with the structure and layout of the site. The
wireframes changed significantly and the designer was relieved. Had
the changes been requested after the site was designed it would have
taken twice as long to change the PSD's from the designer.

I like wireframes. They focus on the functionality. Clients get too
distracted by design.

I've seen designers completely botch interfaces by rushing into
graphics.

But it seem everyone agrees on pencil and paper ( or whiteboard) to
start.

I'm starting now.

I work on a project where there is over 60 now and to be honest they
are all useful. It really depends on what you need them for.

If you are interested you can find a PDF poster of most of them here:

Look for the The Microsoft Dynamics Customer Model. Each Persona on
the poster has about 6 pages of background. It's totally overwhelming
but useful when you need it.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Creating User Interfaces to Work Within a CMS

2010-02-18 Thread Gala S Chase
I am working in a similar situation where we have limited page
templates built in a CMS and limited developers to help create more
custom pages.

My biggest suggestion is to do some analysis of what your needs are,
in regards to modules and templates. Use what you find to come up
with 2 or 3 page templates that you believe will be flexible enough
to meet your needs. Currently the site I work on has about 6
different page templates that have been created over the last year.

So be strategic about when you request new templates and sometimes
you will just need to make what you currently have work.

I hope this helps some.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Personas: how many is too many?

2010-02-18 Thread Gala S Chase
I don't believe there is a such thing as too many or too few
personas. Each project has it's own unique requirements. My first
suggestion is to be thorough in your analysis of each role. The
system needs to meet everyone's needs.

If you believe you can effectively use only 3 personas then start
building your argument for it. Do a cost analysis and in detail
explain how 3 personas can be just as effective as 15. If they are
not willing to go down to 3, try a compromise with 5 or 7. Just keep
working from there until you reach an effective but most of all
efficient number of personas.

Also, be open to using all 15 personas, it can actually be beneficial
and may help you create a great product instead of a good product.

I hope this helps.
Gala

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Personas: how many is too many?

2010-02-18 Thread William Hudson
I've not been following the whole conversation, but of course even 15
personas would be preferable to 15 market segment/user needs analyses.
The point of personas is that they promote empathy - or would do if we
make them 'believable', hence the need for seemingly unimportant
details.

I wrote a blog about this a few months back for a different reason, but
I think it's relevant here, too.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] How do you move from software to hardware UX? Care to share your insights? experience?

2010-02-18 Thread Rob Tannen
Jay - Are you interested in designing software user interfaces for
hardware platforms or interested in designing hardware interfaces
(e.g. physical controls)?

If it's the former and you already have strong interface design
skills, then the transition can be relatively seamless.

If it's a case of learning about hardware, you need to get involved
with people and organizations that design hardware. I'd suggest the
Industrial Designers Society of Ameria (IDSA.org) as a starting place.

Ultimately it comes down to the analysis of the eye movement but in

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Great product pages

2010-02-18 Thread Bella Martin
I agree with Mike; I love peer input as much as the next person but
you have to involve target buyers in this discussion.

The examples provided here are a great springboard for mockup ideas.
Start by asking target customers to react to product page examples or
mockups (as opposed to just asking them what they want, which they may
not be able to articulate).

With the mockups, seek feedback about what information will move your
customer closer to (or further from) making a purchasing
decision...technical data sheets? Strong visuals with options for
close-ups? Social proof? If you provide them with what they need to
make a confident decision up front, you minimize the chances of
buyer's remorse and returns. Only your customer can give you insight
into what those elements are.

Talk to your customer service team too, and see what kinds of
commonly asked questions they get about products. They could also
have insight that would be worth mocking up and testing.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sketching before the Wireframes

2010-02-18 Thread Krystal Higgins
I think this has been wholly answered, but I'll add my two cents:

- I always, always, always sketch first. I do a ton of sketching.
It allows me to get all of my ideas out (the what if phase), and
allows me to have more focus when I get into wireframing. Sketching
is portable, cheap and fast.

- I do show my sketches (and even involve in my sketching phase) my
direct manager, other creatives, and the developers

- I don't show the sketches to high-level stakeholders; mostly
because I don't get that many meetings with them, and so it's
better use of their time to show something more refined. They're
more interested in the scenarios/research behind the wireframes than
seeing how sketches led to those wireframes.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Personas: how many is too many?

2010-02-18 Thread charles Sue-Wah-Sing
That's for everyone's input. All valid.

Navid, I really like your summation of personas you used with your
group.

The problem here as with most online initiatives is that the
marketing team is at the table. And it is an education challenge.
Personas are not a means to understand marketing opportunities within
new audiences. Though that can be a pleasant side effect - it is not
the intention.

I'm still of belief 15 personas is too much for most projects I've
been on. But could be very necessary if the scale and complexity of
the project demands so. And I like some of your suggestions about
weeding out personas based on overlapping goals, intentions and
needs.

Thanks All

Thank you both so much for your answers.

I have also been accepted to UCL so now i'm even more confused.

I like the fact that both York and City have technical components but
I don't think that's the case for UCL, which seems to be more theory
based. But UCL is one of the top universities in the world, and
although that is appealing, I'm not convinced that it should be the
main factor. The course content is the most important, followed by
whether the university is reputable...and I know York is great for
compsci.

I think I need to sit down and ask myself what I really want from the
course. With 6 years of web development/UI experience, does it really
matter if the has a programming aspect or not? I need to figure out
exactly what i'm looking for in the degree.

[IxDA Discuss] [JOB]: UX Design and Technical Interns; Chicago; The Legal Balance; Internship

2010-02-18 Thread scott Harris
Interns needed immediately to build and maintain a membership website
for a new startup company.

The membership website will be built using Drupal and we are looking
for both UX design and technical students to help design and build
the site.

Ideally, we are looking for students experienced with UX principles
and capable of doing technical development with Drupal modules and
PHP, however students skilled in only UX design or technical
development will be considered. Additionally, the student will
ideally be active in the IxDA and attending school in the Chicago
area. Agile based experience is also a plus as this project will
leverage SCRUM and other Agile principles.

Interns should be available a minimum of 10 hours a week and be
available for regularly scheduled daily SCRUMs.

This is a non-paying internship, but we are willing to work with a
university internship/co-op program to ensure that interns receive
appropriate school credit. Also willing to write letters of
recommendation and provide strong reference for successful interns.

Please submit your resume to sc...@thelegalbalance.com

[IxDA Discuss] Seeking stellar examples of Beta/Pilot invitations

2010-02-18 Thread dawn
Hi all –

I am looking for inspiration on how to invite users to participate in a
limited product launch. I’m looking for examples that would get users
excited about the service while engaging them to participate in making it
better (while gracefully setting expectations that it won’t be perfect.)

We will not be doing structured activities, but we will be doing
observational research with a subset of the users.

Any examples are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dawn Nidy

[IxDA Discuss] Metrics for mobile websites/apps

2010-02-18 Thread Hilary Bienstock
Hi, all,

I'm going to be gathering some metrics for a site meant to be accessed by
mobile phone. (Users will follow a link sent to them in a text message or
email.) So I need to understand what types of metrics can be collected by a
service like Omniture, Webtrends, or Google Analytics specifically for mobile
devices. Anyone have any good resources?

As a clarification, I assume that most of the normal metrics (page views,
unique visitors, visits, length of visit, etc.) can be collected -- though tell
me if I'm wrong (for example, visit length may be calculated differently on an
iphone than on a computer). And what about mobile-specific data like:
- device type
- geographic location of mobile device
- browser type, if applicable
- web connection (wireless, 3G, etc.)
- phone carrier
- anything about the mobile plan subscriber
- etc.

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Hilary
