Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA Board Retreat Discussion - we need your input
Thanks to all who have provided their thoughts on this thread. Feel free to continue providing input here or privately, particularly as we continue to build out our agenda. We will share back our discussion at the conference as well as online. From the original email: On Wednesday, February 3, the IxDA Board of Directors will be holding a day-long retreat prior to Interaction10 in Savannah. We will also be holding a discussion on Friday afternoon called The Future of IxDA is You. For both of these events, it will be a time for us to reflect on several things, such as: How have the past six months have gone for the community? How well are our platforms supporting the community (be it ixda.org, IxDA LinkedIn group, local groups, conferences)? Are we appropriately supporting the mission http://www.ixda.org/ that IxDA has put forth? Have we followed the strategies and completed the tasks we put forth to continue meeting the mission? Where do we want to be a year from now? Five years from now? As a volunteer-supported organization, we rely heavily on the community to achieve what we set forth. In order to do this well, we need to be more transparent in our work, we need to be sure we are achieving what the community needs, and we need more support. To that end, I invite you to voice comments, questions, concerns, and opportunities you think the IxDA Board of Directors should be considering at our retreat and discussion, either publicly here or privately to board (at) ixda.org. [IxDA Discuss] Announcing the IxDA Board of Directors for 2010
Dear IxDA Members, We are very happy to announce the IxDA Board of Directors for 2010 with the addition of four new Directors. Please join us in welcoming our incoming Directors Nick Gould, Matt Nish-Lapidus, Kendra Shimmell, and Joe Sokohl. We also welcome back Janna DeVylder who will be continuing for a further term. Their term will officially begin January 1, 2010. Thank you to all of the candidates who put themselves forth. We look forward to their contributions to the Board and the efforts they will catalyze for our entire community. Here are short biographies of the new Directors: *Janna DeVylder* Janna DeVylder is the Director of Interactive Communication at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in Savannah, Georgia. She manages a multi-disciplinary team overseeing the university's websites and contributes to how SCAD utilizes digital channels to meet its brand and communication strategies. Prior to SCAD, Janna directed a team of interaction designers for Arc Worldwide, a Leo Burnett company. In addition, she has led large-scale strategy, information architecture and user experience projects for Orbitz, McDougal Littell and Giant Step. Janna started the IxDA local group in Chicago, then joined the IxDA Board, serving as the Director for IxDA Local Groups and now as President. Janna received her master's degree from the University of Chicago with an emphasis in psychology and anthropology, and holds a Bachelor's degree with honors in psychology from the University of Iowa. *Nick Gould* For the last 10 years, Nick has been CEO at Catalyst Group, a User Experience Design and Research consultancy based in New York City. Among other duties at Catalyst, Nick is the one who explains user experience concepts, processes, and deliverables to (sometimes skeptical) clients and helps them to see that caring about their end user is ultimately in their best interests. Prior to Catalyst, Nick held Internet Strategy and Product Development roles at Prodigy, Citigroup, Bertelsmann, and Scholastic. Before that, he practiced corporate and securities law and was an expert at using WordPerfect for MS-DOS. Nick was a staff columnist at the venerable Digital Web Magazine and has also written for TechCrunch and Silicon Alley Insider. *Matt Nish-Lapidus* As a designer and consultant at nForm User Experience, Matt helps clients navigate the often unfamiliar territory of interaction design to deliver solutions to complex problems. Matt has worked as a designer, artist, programmer, teacher, and consultant in a number of industries, and loves cutting across disciplines. He has been involved in design and art, both personally and professionally, for over ten years, and holds a degree from Ryerson University in experimental fine art. Along with a dedicated team, Matt is a local leader for the IxDA in Toronto. He is passionate about community building, education, and idea sharing, and is an unabashed music nerd, bike junkie, Mac evangelist, and of course, design geek. *Kendra Shimmell* Kendra is a User Experience Design Director at Lextant, a design research consultancy in Columbus, OH. Active in the local design community as a guest lecturer for the Department of Design at The Ohio State University (OSU), as a local leader for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA), and as a mentor to local design students for the Columbus chapter of the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA). On the client level, Kendra aligns interdisciplinary teams around a common goal by facilitating communication across the disciplines of marketing, business, design, and engineering. She has established productive partnerships with companies such as Cardinal Health, CheckFree (now part of Fiserv), Cordis, Dell, Diebold, GE Healthcare, Hewlett-Packard, Hollister, Hunter, Microsoft, Moen, and Nationwide Insurance. Prior to joining Lextant in 2004, Kendra was a User Experience Designer for Nationwide Insurance, collaborating on client and financial management tools, as well as the consumer facing Nationwide.com that was ranked by Gomez in the top three insurance sites for ease of use and over-all performance for two consecutive years. In addition, Kendra worked on a range of consulting projects including rich Internet applications, retail experiences, and translation of dance choreography into multi-media, interactive performances. *Joe Sokohl* For more than 18 years, Joe Sokohl has concentrated on crafting excellent user experiences by using information architecture, interaction design, and user research. His academic background in literature and langauges helped frame his attention to the needs, desires, and visions of people as people. Currently the principal and UX architect for Regular Joe Consulting, LLC, in Richmond, VA,Joe's UX-oriented work has taken him to companies based in Boston, MA; Hamburg, Germany; Richmond, VA; Chicago, IL; and Durham, NC. [IxDA Discuss] Mozilla Design Challenge: Fall '09 – Mozilla Weave Project
IxDA is pleased to announce it has again partnered with Mozilla Labshttp://labs.mozilla.com/and Johnny Holland http://johnnyholland.org/ for this Fall's Mozilla Design Challengehttp://bit.ly/148VEG : *Visualizing your browser data - How can we provide intuitive and useful visual representations of your browser data (such as bookmarks, history, tabs, stored credentials etc.) on a web page?* http://bit.ly/148VEG From the site: Welcome The Mozilla Labs http://labs.mozilla.com/ Design Challenge is a series of events to encourage innovation, and experimentation in user interface design for the Web. Our aim is to provoke thought, facilitate discussion, and inspire future design directions for Firefox, the Mozilla project, and the Web as a whole. [morehttp://labs.mozilla.com/2009/01/introducing-the-design-challenge/ ]Once again we teamed up with the wonderful folks at IxDAhttp://www.ixda.org/, a network dedicated to the professional practice of Interaction Design and Johnny Holland http://www.johnnyholland.org/, an open collective, talking, sharing and finding answers about all aspects of interaction design and invite the wider community to join us in this challenge, develop concepts and submit them to our site. The Brief For this Design Challenge, we are looking for innovative solutions to answer the question: *Visualizing your browser data - How can we provide intuitive and useful visual representations of your browser data (such as bookmarks, history, tabs, stored credentials etc.) on a web page?* As we spend more time on the web, we accumulate more data. We bookmark sites we like, we create accounts on various social networks, we have multiple tabs open as we follow wikipedia loops and so on. We are also browsing the web from multiple devices, on the go. This presents some unique challenges that end up fragmenting our browsing experience. We aren't able to successfully take our entire browsing experience with us, suspend and resume where we left off as we may with our Tivos. The Mozilla Weave project helps address some of these issues by allowing you to securely store and synchronize all of that magic - the bookmarks, passwords, tabs etc - seamlessly as you go about your life. It does impose one requirement though - access to Firefox. As much as we love Firefox and want to see it everywhere, we also recognize there may be valid everyday scenarios where that isn't practical - airport kiosks, libraries, parts of Redmond, WA etc. That doesn't mean *you*, as a Firefox user, should suffer. We want you to have access to your important data, always, at your fingertips, from anywhere. Since the web is ubiquitous, the simplest way we could imagine making this possible is via a web page. However, since we are talking about various types of data accumulated across years, across multiple devices, we would love to get some fresh, creative ideas on how to visually present this information. How It Works The program starts in the first week of September and runs for 10 weeks. The Design Challenge is divided into two phases - each running for five weeks. During the first phase we ask you to produce a concept, mockup and an explanation of your thinking behind it. A mockup can be anything from a low-fi sketch on a napkin to a high-fi video presenting your concept. The Mozilla Labs Weave team will provide feedback to participants at two check-in points in week three and four. At the end of phase one the Weave team will select the most promising concepts, which will move forward into phase two. In this phase you will refine your mockup and turn it into an interactive HTML/CSS/JavaScript prototype (don't worry - we can help you doing this!). During phase two the Weave team will provide regular feedback, weekly check-ins and support via email/irc. Participants are encouraged to share their ideas, approach and progress on their blogs - we will aggregate this information and provide a forum for open discussion, ideation and exchange. At the end of phase two the Weave team will again select the most promising concepts and work with their respective creators on integrating them into Weave. Important Dates - *First week of September 2009* - Launch of Weave Web UI Design Challenge - *Last week of September 2009* - Selection of participants for phase 2 - *First week of November 2009* - Program ends, the Weave team will select the most promising concepts and work with their creator on integrating them into the Weave product Learn more submit: http://bit.ly/148VEG Let us know if you're participating! [IxDA Discuss] Reminder: IxDA needs your input and feedback this week
On Friday the IxDA Board of Directors will be gathering in San Francisco for our annual retreat through Sunday, and we will be meeting with the local IxDA group on Saturday evening. We will be coming from Australia, Brazil, and every time zone in the US. In preparation, we'd like to gather any feedback, comments, questions, and ideas you may have for us. Your thoughts could have great impact on our agenda. You may remain anonymous, or you may share your name so we may follow up with you. Share your thoughts: http://bit.ly/1a5IyC Some topics of conversation already slated are: 1. How do we maintain and sustain IxDA as a volunteer-based, no-membership-fee organization? 2. How do we best support local groups around the world? 3. How can we encourage more people to shift from being passive recipients to more active participants, both with IxDA online, locally and at the conference level? IxDA is supported 100% by volunteers, at every level of the organization. As such our efforts to tackle and complete all that we want to is naturally inhibited by the amount of time and support the community can provide. We have had quite a successful year, but we know there are a lot of areas in need of improvement. We need to hear from you so we can prioritize where our time and energy should be focused. You should expect to hear thoughts coming out of the retreat during the weekend, as well as the week following. If you're not already, follow @ixda on Twitter. [IxDA Discuss] Mozilla Design Challenge: Summe r 09 – “Best in Class” honors and “People ’s Choice” award
Two months ago, IxDA partnered with Mozilla Labs and Johnny Holland to sponsor this summer's design challenge, “*Reinventing Tabs in the Browser – How can we create, navigate and manage multiple web sites within the same browser instance?*“. We were completely overwhelmed with the response, almost 130 entries. It was amazing to see entries come in from all over the world, varying wildly in approach, context and execution. Narrowing down this set into some best-in-class selections did not come easily. Take a look: http://labs.mozilla.com/2009/07/design-challenge-summer-09-honors/ You may very well recognize some names from our community: Best in Class: Innovation For the solution that has the newest / most original interaction models. - TabViz http://design-challenge.mozilla.com/summer09/#bic-innovationby Liz Blankenship, Jakob Hilden Kerry Kao Best in Class: Execution For the solution that has the most expressive prototype, a combination of polish as well as functional availability. - Collapsible Tab Groupshttp://design-challenge.mozilla.com/summer09/#bic-executionby Martin Polley Best in Class: Interaction For the solution that feels provides the best human-computer interaction model. - Wave Concepthttp://design-challenge.mozilla.com/summer09/#bic-interactionby Darby Thomas, Danielle Kanastab Alex Mattice Best in Class: Producible For the solution that would be the easiest to ship to users immediately. - Favitabs http://design-challenge.mozilla.com/summer09/#bic-producibleby Grady Kelly People’s Choice Award For the first time we invited the wider community to vote on their personal favorite – the “People’s Choice” award for the Design Challenge: Summer 09 goes to - CubeZilla http://design-challenge.mozilla.com/summer09/#bic-people by Faber Ludens Many thanks to our friends at Mozilla and Johnny Holland for partnering with us on this. [IxDA Discuss] 4 1/2 hours left of Give a Little Back
It's the last push. So far, with the generous contributions of 681 people, we have raised $14, 031! If we get to at least $15,000, we will have reached half of our goal. Every little bit helps. For those of you who have graciously embedded the widget in your site, you may notice that ChipIn ended the event LITERALLY at 12:00am PST on the 26th, and there is no way to restart an event. To tide us over for the next 4 1/2 hours, we're directing all contribution traffic to this link: http://bit.ly/1979o5 But never fear, most of the links you have out and about will all lead to the board blog, where this link is already embedded. We won't let this glitch end our final push! So put some matching challenges out there! Remember, anyone that contributes today is eligible for the final IxD'10 drawing, as well! http://bit.ly/1979o5 Thank you again, Janna Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] Raise $600 and the IxDA Board will match
We're getting there! 2 1/2 hours left, we're almost to $15,000. As of 2:30 GMT, we are at $14,547 and we have 695 contributors. Those contributors have been individuals, businesses and other representatives from other organizations, like our friends at the IAI and UPA. Let's keep going! The IxDA Board has pooled together another round of contributions to challenge you to match us. We will match the contributions from now until the end of the support drive, up to $600. So go ahead, we challenge you. http://bit.ly/1979o5 This is a volunteer organization. Every single person that contributes their time and energies to IxDA (and there are a lot of you out there) does it because they think this community is an important one to foster, and that the mission is worth it. So many volunteers have also contributed funds on top of their time. Thank them when you see them! Janna DeVylder President, IxDA Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] Only 1 1/2 hours left of the Give a Little Back support drive
Only an hour and a half left! The IxDA Board has a challenge out, raise $600 by the end of this and we'll match up to that amount. We're $270 away from the $600 mark, let's push it! http://bit.ly/1979o5 Remember, anyone that contributes today is eligible for the final IxD'10 drawing, as well! And there are two donations left of The Usability Kit http://www.sitepoint.com/kits/usability1/ - valued at close to $200 USD - to those who donate $100 or more to IxDA fundraiser, to help us deliver our next-generation Website. *Apogee Usability Asia* http://apogeehk.com/ - based in Hong Kong, China -is Asia's leading Usability Research consulting services provider. [IxDA Discuss] Thank you for all of your support
Since Sunday, together as a community we have raised $15,813, by 717 contributions! This includes the $600 match by the IxDA Board, as you well-exceeded the call. We can't thank you enough, and are thankful that so many of you stepped up to chip in. What's next: We'll be holding the drawing for the last IxD'10 registration later this evening, as well as the 40 books from Morgan Kaufmann, and the licenses from ArtinSoft and the Usability Kit from Apogee Usability Asia. Be on the look out for an official thank you, and a request for us to publicly acknowledge your support. We'll soon be creating a space where we can keep you updated specifically about our infrastructure project, where the money is going, who we choose to work with and opportunities for you to participate. While we are now officially closing our support drive, you can still contribute, but now we will spare your inboxes. http://bit.ly/1979o5 If you have any ideas or feedback, or want to get more involved, let us know! [IxDA Discuss] Give a little back
For the price of a cup of coffee you can help IxDA deliver our next-generation platform to serve the needs of the interaction design community. We can't do it without your help. http://bit.ly/17AJoE Since its inception as a mailing list in 2003, IxDA now supports over 10,000 discussion list http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php subscribers, 80 IxDA Local Groups http://www.ixda.org/local.php from around the world, an annual conference (with a regional conference on the way in South America), several budding community initiatives and over 12,000 people affiliated via LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/groupRegistration?gid=3754. Despite our ambitions, our current technology infrastructure is no longer able to support our needs, nor expand to meet our future ones. You have the opportunity to expand IxDA's capability to provide the next-generation website that will take us beyond the mailing list of today. We aim to develop a solid, extensible platform for our community of practice to meet and enrich one another and grow the discipline. IxDA has chosen Drupal as the technology framework for our new infrastructure. The Drupal framework will allow the IxDA community to grow and thrive with improved digital communications capabilities, easy sharing and searching of all types of content, local group sites, and member profiles. However, we can't build the new website ourselves. This is where your financial support is crucial. I am IxDA. You are, too. Without the generous contributions, participation and support of the interaction design community, IxDA wouldn't be where it is today. IxDA is a member-supported organization, not a membership-supported organization, so we collect no dues. You are a member if you say you are. It's that simple. Beyond the generous contribution of volunteer time, financially this means we rely heavily on revenue-generating events like our annual conference and on fundraising efforts such as this, which we haven't held since 2007. Our goal is to collect $30,000 over the next four days, until June 26th. Ambitious, I know, but not impossible. Consider this: If 10,000 subscribers contributed $3, a fancy cup of coffee in some parts, we'd be done. Or 1,000 contributed $30, often less than a good book these days. If you gain anything from IxDA, won't you please give a little back? No amount is too big or small. As a thank you to all that contribute, we will hold a drawing each day and select one name to receive a complimentary registration to interaction'10, being held in Savannah, GA next February! (Note: Each day starts at 12:01 am GMT. No IxDA Board Members are eligible for the drawing. All registrations are transferable but not eligible for cash exchange.) Please contribute now! http://bit.ly/17AJoE Tell the community that you're supporting IxDA! Retweet your support: http://bit.ly/V7kdV We would love to hear why you're a part of IxDA. Create your own IxDA Support widget for your blog or site while you're at it: http://bit.ly/12uHaE How the money will be spent: We want to be able to select a highly qualified development partner who can help sustain our organizational growth over the long term. The funds gathered will be used to build, deploy and maintain the new website. Any funds not used in the current round of development will be used for ongoing website support and development. You can expect updates throughout the build process for how things are progressing. Our goal is to have the first phase of work done by this Fall. It is through the conference, initiatives, local groups and individual involvement that the IxDA network thrives. Our organizational structure is based on two simple ideas: local grassroots involvement and global stewardship through the Board. We encourage all our members to organize at the local level. We encourage all our members to contribute your thoughts to the advancement of our discipline. Again, please join us in extending a warm welcome to Steve! [IxDA Discuss] Opportunities with Mozilla Labs and IxDA
Hi everyone, We have been talking with Mozilla about how our two communities can tap into each other, and I think there are some exciting ideas in the works. I've seen some calls for a more open source approach to the work we do, so here's your chance. We're talking about co-sponsored design challenges (even in conjunction with JohnnyHolland.org), maybe events, creating our own space for IxDA.org innovation...We'll keep you posted as things progress (and naturally contact any of the Board members with ideas you may have). One opportunity that is on the table right now is working with them to build out what they're calling The Chocolate Factory, an area for sharing and tapping into innovation. For starters on that, I'd like you to take a look at the following call for participation from Pascal Finette of Mozilla Labs: Hi Everybody, Since a little while we are working on a super-exciting project -- and now we would love to get your feedback and (if you want) your help: The basic idea is to replace the current Concept Series forum with a tool which allows users to post ideas/mockups/prototypes; discuss, rate collaborate on them and move them forward through the process. Further the tool aggregates content from the wider web to allow users to host their concepts on their own blogs and sites such as flickr. You'll find our current thinking about this tool on the Mozilla wiki: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Site_2.0/Concept_Series_Tool_-_Specs2.0 How can you help? First off all - we would love to get your feedback on this. Does this make sense to you? Is the tool - as described - something you would like to use? What could we do better? Any specific ideas? We would love to hear them! Secondly - we're going to start developing this soon. And we would love your help. Currently we plan to build this as a combination of a lightweight RESTful API and a Javascript client (similar to the architecture of Bespin). Atul and I will start hacking on this - and we welcome everyone who would like to hack with us on this. And we need more than just hackers - we need to build wireframes, design the interface, create a great user experience. In short: Everything from start to finish. If you're interested - ping me via email (pfinette [at] mozilla [dot] com), twitter (@pascalfinette) or IRC (pascalf on irc.mozilla.org / #labs). -Pascal - let us know what you think!
