[IxDA Discuss] Event NYCUPA 10/28 - Recipe for Success: A Case Study for Usability Testing Techniques

2008-10-21 Thread Joy Zigo
Greetings,

It has become clear that the blurb for our 10/28 event did not adequately
convey the thrust of the presentation.

While the subject matter involves the presidential election and the
usability of candidate sites, the main subject of the presentation is how to
plan, run, and present findings for a usability test.

The presentation will be of interest to those who are:

● Considering doing some usability testing on their own and want a
step-by-step walkthrough of the process
● Doing usability testing and want to learn a bit more about best practices
● Considering contracting someone to do usability for them

While this presentation cannot convey the amount of detail you would get
from a 1-2 day course or a complete course of study, it will cover the nuts
and bolts of basic usability.

Here are some specific questions Lon will address:

Exploring the process of planning and executing a usability test:

● What does the project timeline look like?
● What are the ranges of expected costs?
● What are the advantages of hiring a moderator with experience?
● Do you need to test in more than one geographical area?
● How long should the interviews be?

Understanding specifics of how this comparative usability test was
executed successfully:

● Writing a tight screener for accurate recruitment of an elusive target
group
● Creating a focused moderator's guide for comparative testing of Obama
McCain sites
● Avoid bias during the interviews through open-ended questions and site
rotation
● Keeping participant emotions in check during the sessions
● Weighing what people say vs. what they actually do on the site for
balanced findings
● How to frame findings recommendations so that they are actionable and
easy for the project team to digest
● How video clips can illustrate and motivate

I hope you can make it!

Best,
MS
Mark Safire, President Co-Founder, NYC Chapter of UPA

*About the presentation:
*Learn how global trends in mobile computing will change the practice of
user experience development.

One of the greatest challenges in designing for mobile devices is gaining
perspective early. What you see in a wireframe or a comp on the desktop and
what you see when you hold the same design in your hand can often be an
entirely different experience.

How can we move into this handheld environment earlier? What methods can we
use to simulate the interactions and gain insight on usability? In this
talk, frog design will share some techniques used to approach a recent
multi-modal handset UI.

We will show examples of how simple dialogue, paper prototyping, video
simulation and 'wizard of oz' environments were employed to gather concrete
findings while allowing for maximum flexibility.

*About the speakers:
*Michael Jefferson is a Senior Design Analyst at frog design focused on user
experience, design research and accessibility. Early in his career, Michael
wrote and produced multiple television series programs for ESPN and
Discovery. His interviewing and story telling ability helped him transition
to interactive media in '97. Michael has since worked on interaction
design, strategy and implementation for a client list that includes Sprint,
GE, Verizon, Oracle, Barclays, and William's Sonoma. Michael holds a BA in
Communications from the University of Massachusetts as well as an MA from
NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program.

Clay Wiedemann specializes in interface research and design at frog design,
and has worked with teams to develop applications for content management
systems as well as airline check-in interfaces. He has worked for a variety
of clients which include Delta Air Lines, Barnes and Noble, Chase Banks, GE,

[IxDA Discuss] 10/16 Event: Eye-Tracking for Usability Testing [NYC-UPA]

2007-10-15 Thread Joy Zigo
NYC Usability Professionals Association presents:

 *Eye-Tracking for Usability Testing*

Seeing what people do and hearing what they say is the heart of usability
research. But what's the brain doing? We used eye-tracking technology to
watch hundreds of people's eyes as they used the Web, doing a plethora of
different tasks and using different websites. Seeing exactly what the user
is looking at – and not looking at – is like getting to sneak into his brain
for a little while. Kara Pernice will discuss how she conducted this
research and present some of the findings from it. She is the co-author with
Jakob Nielsen of the upcoming book, Eyetracking Web Usability.

of experience in evaluating usability in the areas of collaboration,
document management, graphics and multimedia, database design, and handheld
devices.

More recently, she has studied more consumer-oriented products such as
digital cameras, cell phones, and cappuccino makers. She has also been a
