Re: [IxDA Discuss] Anyone tried out GuiMags?

2009-08-18 Thread Darci Dutcher
One place I would find use for Gui mags (or the DIY version) would
be at client workshops to get clients more involved as these would be
neater, simpler and more fun to use.

I tend to do that with post-it notes with elements drawn on. It may
not be as pretty as the GUI Mags, but no one feels bad about
scribbling over post-it notes or drawing their own elements to add in
to the design. I like the really low-tech version as it seems to let
people feel more capable of adding their own ideas.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Help us improve fivesecondtest.com

2009-05-06 Thread Darci Dutcher
Just a suggestion...

It might help to allow designers to specify a task that is more
detailed than favorite/least favorite part of website or list
what you remember the most before displaying the image. Context is
key. It's rare to end up on completely random web pages (most pages
you get to through a link, search, etc), so the viewer already has
some indication of what type of page/information to expect.
Christine's article mentions telling participants You're ready to
donate to the Red Cross organization. But you're unsure of what kind
of donation to make. What are your donation options? but that kind
of information seems to be missing from fivesecondtest.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] People are Used to it

2008-12-26 Thread darci
People are used to it is a horrible excuse for just about
anything. And I doubt many people would argue that point.

That aside, when examining the usability of anything, it is important
to understand people's goals. Are people interested in quickly
scrolling through channels? Are people interested in browsing
through the channels one at a time to see what the options are? Or
are people frequently bypassing the TV's channel changing system
because of cable boxes, satellites, TiVo, and whatever other systems
are out there?

I'll admit that I haven't owned a TV in several years, but I liked
clicking through the channels to see what was on and it sounds as
though the click wheel would complicate the way in which I did that.

How well can people with limited dexterity interact with
mouse-wheel-like-dials? Television remotes are used by a huge range
of people, with differing physical capabilities. Would wheels
exclude part of the target population? I really don't know the
answer to that question, I'd be curious if someone could shed light
on that topic.

There probably are better options than the current one. I don't
particularly have any suggestions though, but the problem is not
quite as simple as it may initially seem.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Why are password fields asterisked on join-up forms?

2008-09-05 Thread darci
I think the original point here was referring to when the passwords
aren'tasterisked, why then do the users have to enter it twice
(since they can see it) . In which case, I have no idea.

Well, just because people CAN read the field, doesn't mean they
will. Forcing a second entry would seem to reduce the likelihood of
a typo, even in a field that you can see.

Yes, it is an extra field to fill in, but it seems a small price to
pay to ensure that I can log in without having to reset my password
the first time I need it.
