I served in the military... Go by this order to narrow selection: 1) Military (Army, Navy, Air Force, etc...) 2) Service Branch 3) Commissioned or Enlisted (Officer, Warrant Officer, Non-Commissioned Officer, Enlisted) 4) Rank (Sgt, Airman, Master Chief, etc...) There is also pay grade that is universal scale used to normalize salary rates between Service Branches... E-1 is the lowest enlisted rank... O-1 is the lowest commissioned officer rank. Other items to list on a profile might be: service awards, special unit citations, badges, years of service, tours of duty/duty stations, military schools... If you would like any help in brainstorming, please let me know... Chris Vestal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] HELP NEEDED: Need to find a list of military ranks for a drop down menu
The key is why are they sorting? If you mean the family members who are entering the soldiers names, why would they need to sort? If so, what fields? to what end? If you mean people trying to find a listing on your site, rank could be an optional field but it should not be required. Ranks change quite often and the person looking could have no idea what rank they are. The ranks should show up in the results field though. If you do include ranks, that should not be a limiter on results. When entering the details of the soldier you should have a field with service before, and then the rank drop down should auto update with the corresponding ranks for that service allowing only selection within the particular service. Just to note that the soldier's home state is a very popular search term as usually thats what identifies them from the 5 others of the same name in the DOD. FYI, I am a Former Marine and have done hundreds of searches for military buddies on different sites when I have lost touch with them. Some good examples, Military.com's buddy finder and thefew.com. I just did a search for a buddy on military.com, here are the results. Results 1 - 10 of 221 for chris collins, Army NameService Status PaygradeState Unit collins, chris ArmyAL With paygrade being the rank and State being the home state. The DOD records are always remarkably bad, so I only know this isn't my friend because he was not from Alabama. Good luck. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] HELP NEEDED: Need to find a list of military ranks for a drop down menu
We¹re building a tribute area on an author site to fallen soldiers. I want family members to be able to sort by last name, which means that I need to put a field in the DB that separates rank from First Name and Last Name. Does anyone know where I can find a list of all military ranks for a selection box or drop down? Or, should I just put a field in the form. A google search for official us military rank names yielded this result, which might do the trick for you: http://www.usafesvsmarketing.org/Tools/US Military Ranks.htm As mentioned, might help to know the service first, then your dropdown list will be much shorter. Or you could try option groups to group them together in order. Might also be good to list them in ascending order (lowest rank to highest), given that you'll rarely get more than one General of the Army. Re: [IxDA Discuss] HELP NEEDED: Need to find a list of military ranks for a drop down menu
You really don't want to group them by service within a single drop down. That always causes issues of supremacy to surface. Even if it's alphabetical, the Marines will get upset that the Army is first and the Navy will tell you that the Marines are a subset of the Navy and shouldn't appear before them and so on. kt On Jun 23, 2009, at 10:43 AM, Bryan Minihan wrote: A google search for official us military rank names yielded this result, which might do the trick for you: http://www.usafesvsmarketing.org/Tools/US Military Ranks.htm As mentioned, might help to know the service first, then your dropdown list will be much shorter. Re: [IxDA Discuss] HELP NEEDED: Need to find a list of military ranks for a drop down menu
Yes, I thought about the different branches and ranks amongst those branches. It may be too complex to implement at this stage. I may have to just keep it as a text field and people can enter the rank themselves. On 6/23/09 1:39 PM, Tonia M. Re: [IxDA Discuss] HELP NEEDED: Need to find a list of military ranks for a drop down menu
Jamie's point is important, each branch has a different rank structure (I'm presuming we're talking US military). You can find this sort of info online - Wikipedia for example... for the US Marines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps#Rank_structure You could either have users select the branch first, then filter the rank list accordingly - or you could have onerank list with all possible choices - or just a text input. If you need to do some sorting or other computation on that field it may be important to you to keep the data clean, so selecting from a list would be better than a text input. But if that's not a concern a text input is fine. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] HELP NEEDED: Need to find a list of military ranks for a drop down menu
You seem to be concatenating a couple problems here, which it means it's hard to determine the best solution. (1) how do you enter the first name and does your field contain both rank and first name and (2) how to enable sorting by last name. One thing I'm absolutely sure of: with all 5 branches of service involved (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard - have I missed any?) rank would require a very long selection menu (whatever its form). Another thing is that family members and persons responsible for entering this data will be very clear on what the rank of any person in question. So, in this case, your issue in this case is spelling problem, which is probably best handled by back end error handling (The computer can spell check and offer an appropriate alternative much more quickly than a person can find the entry in the pull down or selection menu). I'd actually give the data-entry people a pull-down for service branch, and then have back end programming such that the proper list of ranks available in that service drop down (which significantly cuts the number of available titles. There are very few Adminals in the Army.) and then have text fields for first name and last name. Make sure you give them the chance to correct spelling on both those last two -- Spelling errors in name -- for whatever reason -- seem to be rife in the military. katie User Experience Strategist ka...@firstthought.com On Jun 23, 2009, at 11:44 AM, Anthony Zeoli wrote: We’re building a tribute area on an author site to fallen soldiers. Actually, you will *never* have more than one General of the Army at a time, and.. in all likelihood, even one person with that rank would be unlikely these days. If your intent is to offer a filter, then you're gonna want to first let them specify the service... which would then drive what the rank filter is populated with.
