Yes:
- Go to the Squeezebox Server Web UI on the VortexBox
- Click 'Settings'
- On the 'Basic Settings' tab under 'Rescan Music Library' choose

Unfortuantely I can't remember exactly how I set it up but I have
SqueezePlay running as an app in the native software (although you can
run it in Ubuntu if you use a memory stick) however it's a great
display/controller for all my Squeezeboxes. I did a couple of other

and what you've suggested sounds just what I need.
I'll look into Atom motherboards and fanless cases. If I go down this
route, what OS would you suggest?

My advice is to NOT try to integrate ITUNES and SB. About the only
reason I can possibly see to do this is to use your ITUNES playlists.
But other than this (and you can work around this with various SQL
dynamic playlist functions in SB), it creates more potential headaches.

There seems to be a compatibility problem with Spicefly Sugarcube. If
you try to access the settings for it, the app crashes. Not huge, but
it would be nice to be able to turn it on and off.
