[slim] live365 vip

2006-09-12 Thread wnshall

Hi,

I'm having trouble connecting add-free to live365 stations after
paying for their VIP pass. I scanned the forums and found this
discussed a while back and discovered a post saying this bug had been
fixed for 6.3 (and indeed a check of the bug list shows this bug listed
as closed). I'm running 6.3.1 - 8468 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252.

Does anyone have any experience connecting to live365 stations with
VIP?

Note, I have a number of stations in my favorites and that is how I am
connecting. I prefer not to have to go to the live365|my presets menu.
Thanks,
-Steve

Victor, thank you very much for the efforts on this tool. I finally
got some time to try this out and I can't get it working for me. I'm
running 6.5b2 (downloaded Sept. 11th).

It appears that it's not finding any tags in my MP3 files:

Code:

./make_cover.pl -p /usr/local/slimserver/ -m
/data/music/mp3/Information_Society/hack/ -d

  Now looking in: /data/music/mp3/Information_Society/hack

Use of uninitialized value in warn at ./make_cover.pl line 120.
  Using this track to test:

When there really is id3 data in there:
Code:

What do applications like MusicMatch use to accomplish this? They are
somehow able to show me album cover art without me needing to download
or scan anything. It simply appears to utilize the Album tag from the
file while it's playing and displays the image over the internet.

I'm a little confused why Slimserver wouldn't have something like this
built-in since it's already so internet aware.

[slim] v7 not showing artist with track title in search anymore

2006-09-12 Thread norderney

I am running with SlimServer Version: 7.0a1 - 9180 - Windows XP - EN -
cp1252.

Since installing from 6.3.0 to 7.0a1, I have noticed that when
displaying an album on the web browser it no longer puts the artist
name along side each track title. I found this very useful when
displaying a Various Artists album. Unless there is a setting somewhere
that I have missed.

Example, select New Music, then select an album with various artists
and it only displays the track titles on screen.

Thanks

Try Server Settings - Formatting - show Artist with Albums.

Also note that 7.0 isn't a stable release, so unless you have
deliberately put yourself on the bleeding edge you might want to try
6.5 (which is pretty similar but is where all the stability effort is
going on ahead of its planned release in a week or so).

[slim] alienbbc configuration?

2006-09-12 Thread Peter Nõu

hi,

in earlier nightly .exe of 6.5 I had a specific drop down for
configuring AlienBBC. Now, in 6.5beta it is gone. I can only enable or
disable alien at the internet radio plugin settings. (or get in there
and copy-paste lines between .pm files)

How do I get to configure this - among other things I need to move
specific items on and off the main menu as presented in the player.

thanks,
peter

ps. is alien installed and enabled in the .exe or do I need to instaall
teh plugin manually? I have done exactly that, installed AlienBBC 1.05
for windows. Is this what is causing the lack of Alien-config?

[slim] Softsqueeze and mp2

2006-09-12 Thread John Gorst

Has anyone had /streaming/ mp2 radio stations to play on softsqueeze?

I believe that the strem is directly requested by the player (i.e.
softsqueeze) and therefore bitrate limiting/transcoding on the server
side will not have an effect?

I am trying to hook up softsqueeze to my DAB digital radio card which
only streams out in MP2. It works fine with my aged squeezebox1.

An ideas? Is it an easy fix to add MP2 support to softsqueeze? Is it
easy to force slimserver to transcode mp2--mp3 for softsqueeze clients?

[slim] Scanner.exe Crash

2006-09-12 Thread jcs77

I have been trying to scan my library with version 6.5 (Sept 10 release)
and keep getting a scanner.exe crash notification from Windows. In the
library info, the crash happens at about the same place with 4652
artists. On a side note v6.3 also has problems scanning.

I am using Win XP pro, 1TB external LaCie drive, 10+ mp3 files,
PIII 5??MHz, 512MB ram.

A long time ago, I was able to completely scan the entire library with
slimserver v5. It was also running on a newer P4 computer...

Does anybody have any ideas on how to debug? Do you think this is a
computer issue? Could a bad file cause the scanner to crash? Is the
number of files an issue?

TIA

Typically, when the computer that slimserver is installed on is shut

I own ATC SCM150ASL active pro speakers. I haven't had them long but
love them. Why do you suspect that 0db attenuation (i.e none) will be
too much gain for the active ATC's? I don't know anything about
impedance matches, etc. so I'm really asking in a void. Is the volume
control not granular enough to have it turned down low? Thanks,

I'm interested as to how you think the Transporter plays with this.
Looks like Apple are basically doing what I've been trying with
mini-itx and I believe a lot of people want - get rid of clients with
small screens and reuse what most people have as their stereo; the one
connected to the TV (or the TV itself).

To me Transporter is the total opposite, it is more audiophile than
pragmatic.

The transporter doesn't work with the Apple device, it serves a

At first glance, the Apple prototype iTV doesn't appear to be of much in
the way of competition to the Squeezebox. All they share is the ability
to transport music from a computer to a receiver/stereo/entertainment
center. The iTV is a general purpose device designed to work in
conjunction with a video display. The SB3 is primarily a device to
bring high quality music to you, with no reliance on a video display
other than its built-in VFD. In terms of value, the iTV has video
output hardware, the SB3 adds a built-in high resolution VFD. I suspect
that the components of the SB3 are probably more expensive.

The iTV seems to be a marriage of Apple's old Airport Express product +
video. It's about as competitive with the SB3 as the stereo out on the
Airport Express was, though the iTV improves on Airport Express by
requiring you to use your TV to listen to music, probably located near
your stereo, rather than iTunes, probably not located near your stereo.

The new Apple player will make a big dent in Sonos sales I would

I agree. It does appear to have an optical digital out:

A lot could change between now and product release, of course.

I think you underestimate the brand power of Apple, plus the iTV will
play video, music, shows photo albums etc. To most people this is far
more functional than Sonos or SB3. A nice big TV screen also allows you
to browse music using a nice big display and everyone has a TV or two in
the house, so it makes a lot of sense. In fact you could hook up a cheap
color LCD TV to it just for audio playback in a small room and that
would work a lot better for me than the SB3 display. Sure the SB3 has
audiophile kudos, but so does Apple - it's used a lot in recording
studios so this is going to be a natural step for a lot of Apple
devotees.

Don't get me wrong, I like my SB2 for the audio quality, but if the iTV
comes close, I can't see how SB3 would ever become more mainstream.

Your wireless router will have a Web UI for configuration.

Based on the channels in use around you, you'll need to pick a free
channel which is furthest away from the ones already in use.

It seems strange that your wireless laptop is not showing any of the
wireless networks nearby, but a free piece of software called
Netstumbler will. It will also show you the channel being used by each
Network.

Change the channel on your router, then reboot the SB.

The SB still has a market for the few of us left that enjoy a good

basement. I don't watch TV, and certainly don't need every form of
entertainment stuffed in every orifice 24/7 via 17-channel
four-dimensional surround LCD plasma audio-video panels with direct HD
sattelite link for only $89.99 per month. Quite frankly, with Slim
Devices' non-existent marketing it won't go any further than the linux
nerd market that just happens to stumble across its website (like I
did.)

Apple likes to think they're ahead of Microsoft with OSX, but they're
just now catching up to Media Centre, and how many years has that been
out now?

The new iPods are nice, especially the shuffle... that thing is

May. This has been used with 6.2, 6.3 and currently 6.5b1 9562. Don't
forget that you have to enter your username and password into server

Hope this helps

That's very probably not the temporary folder you need. Open a DOS window
and run set. You should then see two values for tmp and temp. Clean
these.

Also, do you know if softsqueze need to be upgraded too, going from

Softsqueeze is part of Slimserver. If you update Slimserver, you're also
upgrading Softsqueeze.

Now when I start it on my laptop it says that it should be upgraded
with a better optimed version...

How do you start it?

RealAudio 5 format.

If your valid source is in RealAudio 5 format you need to install other

builtin but other codecs need an external library support.

Test your URL with mplayer on a command line and see what message is

About softsqueze.,

I run the program version 2.8 and not the java version, but when I
start it, I get this message:
This version of SoftSqueeze is optimezed for slimserver 6.3 but you
are running slimserver 6.5b2. It is recommended that you upgrade

Then it gives me the option to download now, and it redirects me to

[slim] iTunes 7

2006-09-12 Thread Jazz1

I know that there is a FrontRow update, but I have not seen it yet. So I
don't know if it does anything new/fancy with the Album or DVD art.

I'm impressed with the new album art view in iTunes 7, but it does not
seem to support album art via a shared library on the remote computer
(in this case a Mac). So if your trying to serve up some album art eye
candy on your remote computer using iTunes 7 it doesn't look like it
will happen that way.

There is some new function in iTunes that is supposed to snag album art
for your entire music library. I'm not sure yet how well it is working.

Any other comments yet on iTunes 7? I'm thinking I still don't want to
dedicate a computer for remote listening to my music. So the SB is
still looking good to me.

Also sort of wondering what the new field is in the iTunes song info:

and I am not a niche audiophile type either. Just someone who has a nice
comfortable living room that I don't feel I need to watch TV in the

Let's wait to see how it sounds.

Can you control the unit by a web inteface or it's own remote
(extra$$?)? Is there an IR eye?

I guess they are really going for the video market - and once you are
there, I presume the audio is pretty easy to include as well. So as a
one stop shop and for the AppleHeads, it's a home run.

I'm holding off judgement until I know about useability and sound
quality. And yes, that mini, mini, mini shuffle does look nice. It made

The actual problem here is that our Ogg decoder can't decode that
stream. Note the 'notSupported' method, this is called if the player

we'll take a look.

The DNS error is probably from the second item in a playlist, which
looks like the mp3 version of the same stream. Try increasing your
radio station timeout, or just try playing the stream again.

[slim] Re: Skin Problem in 6.5

2006-09-12 Thread jeffluckett

Some quick suggestions:

1. clear your cache and reload the page. (hit ctrl+f5)
2. http://localhost:9000/default - This will bring you to the default
skin if all else fails. (replace localhost with your server IP if
appropriate)

[slim] Re: iTunes 7

2006-09-12 Thread benh

Just FYI, SlimServer has no issues with the slightly expanded XML schema
in iTunes 7's metadata store.

Muhahahahaha. I knew ditching the Squeezeboxes and going the Mac way was

A silent Front Row front end.

All of you guys yammering about displays - got no remotes on your flat
 screen tellys?

Wait until you actually try it to start talking about how great it is.
The Xbox 360 plus XP Media Center gives (and has given for a year now)
basically the same experience that Front Row plus the iTV will give,
and I find it to be substantially less usable than the Squeezebox for
simple music listening.

For photo viewing on an HDTV, the 360/MCE combination is excellent; for
HD movie trailers, it works wonderfully (and I hope that HD-DVD's
managed copy functionality gets a solid implementation once things are
more shaken out, so I can watch all my movies streamed off a server);
but for music, having to use a TV is just a pain.
