[slim] Which services are available outside USA?
Is there a list where I can check which services are available in which region? I believe that almost all services are only available in the USA, but it would be nice to be able to check this information on the slimdevices website... I would like to be able to use last.fm, but can't because I live in the Netherlands. What I don't understand that I can create an account at last.fm, can download the software, can use it on my PC, but can't use it on my Squeezebox. -- verypsb verypsb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17295 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52427 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Controller Battery Life
More investigation is needed to get to the bottom of this. Is it batch of bad batteries? Are the battery contacts on the charger not making contact to the bottom of the Squeezebox Controller? We're not sure what the root cause of the problem is. Is it a software bug? That's why I wanted to get a few Duets sent to California to perform further analysis. I didn't want to get in more than a 2 or 3 to look at just yet. I don't know whether they'll have cradles for sale at the BBQ on Thursday. However, I'll be giving a demo of something during the BBQ. Bring your complete Duet over, and we can discuss the battery issue further. Just ask for me. Thanks for your quick reply, Ben. Much appreciated. Unfortunately, on my SBC the Back Button (left arrow to the lower left of the scroll wheel) does not do what I'm requesting (and what you're experiencing on your unit). [slim] Squeezebox2 Wireless Headaches
Hi All, I keep getting drop outs on my wireless LAN with my SB2. I am running a Billion 7404-VGP-M with WPA security. Using an external HDD connected via USB2 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. When I connect via ethernet it works flawlessly. The music will play for a random amount of time, sometimes I even get through an entire song but never more than 5 minutes before the SB2 will just stop playing and display a Connection Timed Out message. Often teh display will go blank as well before coming back on but not starting the music again. Re: [slim] MusicIp causing a rescan - why?
Philip Meyer;338010 Wrote: I changed the SqueezeCenter MusicIP plugin to work differently - I've added an option so that it won't read tag data from MusicIP (i.e. it uses SC's scanner to read music files, and only uses MIP for making mixes). I added my changes as a patch to bug 5637 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5637). I have created a zip file of the modified plugin on my website - if you want to try it, download the zip and replace the content in server/slim/Plugins/MusicMagic. http://www.hergest.demon.co.uk/Music/music.shtml Philip, I downloaded and installed your modified plugin and it works as you said. Took 20 mins off a clear and rescan (from 1 hour 20 minutes), and a new and changed music scan now takes 2 minutes 19 seconds. Mixes work the same. your router needs to port forward your isp (usually) also needs to give you a static ip address. then you just hit port 9000 with a webpage, and set up your mp3 player to hit the same port. sounds complicated but isn't. so firstly, check if you have a static ip address. then see if your router can port forward. -- wilgartw wilgartw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19007 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52433 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] possible to reach mp3 files from outside my network?
Connecting remotely is fairly easy to do, but it is highly recommended that you use ssh or some sort of vpn to protect your network at home. I've done ssh on Windows in the past and it's not that difficult to do. http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ As far as having a static ip address goes, use a service like dyndns.org if you don't have or can't get one. I used it for awhile and it works well, although a static ip address is always the best. You will need to assign your SqueezeCenter box a static ip address within your own network so that any port forwarding done by your router goes to the right place. Just make sure that it's out of the range of addresses being handed out by your dhcp server. SoftSqueeze works well for remote playing and has a built in ssh client so you don't need a seperate program to create your tunnels. -- 4mula1 SqueezeCenter 7.2 + Solaris 10 x86: Because everything else would've been easy! At first I postulated like the previous poster that it only worked on songs that are for sale in the iTunes Music Store, but a little investigation showed this not to be the case, either. I tested with an album which is not for sale on iTMS (nor are any of its tracks available in compilations or anything), and found that about 50% of its tracks were capable of generating Genius playlists, and the other half caused iTunes to tell me the song was unavailable for Genius. It's possible that these tracks will become mixable as Apple analyzes more data uploaded by additional users, but I don't really know how their system works, so. MusicIP, on the other hand, can analyze literally any audio file you give it and do its best to make recommendations. With regard to iPod Classic functionality, I believe you won't get the playlist called Genius on your iPod, but if you like a Genius playlist you have, you can use the Save Playlist button to create a playlist that can be synced to your iPod. I'll give that a little more examination at home tonight, though. -Steve ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Very simple NAS SB3 network setup
Presumably you will need to set up the SB3 (and NAS for that matter) with fixed IP addresses. I'm assuming of course your NAS is not running a DHCP server. If that is the case it might be worthwhile choosing IP addresses that are in the same subnet as the ones dished out by your current router. Obviously choose ones that are outside your router's DHCP server scope. That way if you do need to plug the NAS or SB3 back into your current network, they would continue to work without having to mess about changing IP addresses. -- GlenL GlenL's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14364 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52439 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I recently finished setting up 2 duet receivers in my house and they are working great. The only thing I miss is my XM radio. I have an account but the SC plugin for SC 7.2 doesn't seem to function via the remote controller. I've been checking for an updated plugin but I was also thinking that since Sirius is accessible via SN (don't need to have the computer on, which is a plus) and since Sirius and XM have recently merged, are there plans to offer XM via SN as well? Certain things seemed destined to *never* happen. No extra cradles for the Controller and no SB supported XM. Quite a few of us would love either and or, but we apparently aren't making enough noise. Anyhoo, the XM plugin 2.0 should work, but for the sake of ease, you should use the Classic skin in SC. Even then you have to always control it from SC and not the Controller. At least for me that's the only way you can get it to work. Also, you cannot syncronize two receivers when playing XM. It'll drive you nuts trying to figure it out because sometimes it works for a little while. When you start it in SC it will show on the Controller, but that's all. Just the ICON. I'm equally bummed since I really like XM. Internet radio is o.k. sometimes, but I find my stations are not always there and my favorite blues station shut down all together. If you want the simplest solution you can get rid of the switch. [slim] SqueezeBox Power On Issue - Constantly Trying to Connect to Suspended SC
Hi, My SB3 has developed a really annoying issue (since 7.2), here's what happens... I normally power off all my AV stuff when I'm not using it and suspend the SC computer. Formerly, when I'd power on the AV gear the SB3 would show the Logitech/Squeezebox logos, attempt to gain a network network connection, promptly give up and settle into a blank screen mode. Currently, the SB3 powers up and goes into an infinite loop of trying to connect to the (suspended) SC server. It's cracking my GF (and me) up this constant distracting scrolling on the SB3 (message something like 'Can't connect to squeeze center..., Left to set up...). When I revive the suspended PC the problem disappears (SB just shows date/time) I've tried playing around with the Power On Resume settings under SettingsPlayer but nothing seems to help. Am I missing something dead obvious? Any help very much appreciated... [slim] SBC sometimes confuses or doesn't display artwork
This doesn't happen often, but I thought I'd ask since it has happened more than a few times. I'll queue up some songs through MusicIP and look through the list. I've seen where the artwork displayed was completely incorrect. A song will show with a cover from another album that happens to have a song featured in the list. Regenerating the playlist in that case made the problem go away. I've also seen where not all tracks that should have artwork don't. Last night, my wife queued up a bunch of songs all from a particular artist in shuffle mode. None showed artwork. In this case, I power-cycled the SBC and the problem went away. Has anybody else noted behavior like this? I've seen this with both 7.1 and 7.2. It is infrequent enough that it doesn't bother me much, but I wondered if others saw this behavior. Also of note is that I use the web interface to play music at my desk at work every day. I have probably spent more time with the web UI than the SBC. Oh, you're affected by that bug with the Zyxel router. Thanks for the pointer. I've not been following that bug closely enough, I guess. That's been a tough problem to resolve. Another way to save a tiny amount of energy: leave your car parked outside instead of in the garage. That way you're driving about 30 feet less every day, and saving a whole 0.01 ounces of gasoline. [slim] Announcement: iSqueeze lightweight skin for iPhone iPod touch
Hi all, I've adapted my PSP skin (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35993) to be more compatible with the vertical form factor of the iPhone and the iPod Touch. I liked the slickness of iPeng (really rich UI - nice work on that), but I found it to be a bit heavyweight for my liking. So I modified my PSP skin, and I'm really enjoying it on my iPod Touch. I had to change a handful of files from the PSP skin, but the skins are 98% similar - just some minor differences to make it more iPhone/iPod friendly. Eventually I'd like to merge the two together to have a single skin that allows you to choose your device dynamically, but for now I'll post this skin, get some feedback, and see where this takes us. For the newbies out there, all you need to do is unzip the attached file to in your squeezcenter/html directory (so you have a directory called ../squeezecenter/html/iSqueeze) and navigate to http://ip_of_server:9000/iSqueeze. Re: [slim] possible to reach mp3 files from outside my network?
blazingtortoise;338829 Wrote: Just a word of warning. I set up SSH tunneling to my server yesterday and in approximately 12 hours I had 15,000 attempts to break into my server. If your going to do it, make sure it's secure. Simon. Unforunately many people believe an SSH server to be secure by itself (it is called *secure* shell). Here is a recent SANS article on brute force attacks: http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=4408 One of the most important things you can do is disable the ability to login directly as root by setting PermitRootLogin no in the sshd configuration file (which will be something like /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a Linux system). Another easy thing you can do is limit the machines that are allowed to connect. Very few people need to allow access to their ssh server from any machine on the Internet. You can use the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files to limit access (most Linux distros have OpenSSH compiled to obey these files). Put the line ALL:ALL into /etc/hosts.deny, and then in /etc/hosts.allow add a line like sshd:123.456.654.321,456.789.987.654 to permit access from particular IP address (you can also use hostnames). Of course, make certain you have strong passwords (that aren't dictionary words, etc.), or switch to using only key-based logins. -- ncarver ncarver's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15905 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52433 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well XM gets my vote as well, and maybe it will be a moot point with the Sirius and XM merger. I don't see why they support Sirius, and not XM, is there really that much difference??
