[slim] Which services are available outside USA?

2008-09-10 Thread verypsb

Is there a list where I can check which services are available in which
region?

I believe that almost all services are only available in the USA, but
it would be nice to be able to check this information on the
slimdevices website...
I would like to be able to use last.fm, but can't because I live in the
Netherlands. What I don't understand that I can create an account at
last.fm, can download the software, can use it on my PC, but can't use
it on my Squeezebox.

Re: [slim] Controller Battery Life

2008-09-10 Thread MickeyG

More investigation is needed to get to the bottom of this. Is it batch
of bad batteries? Are the battery contacts on the charger not making
contact to the bottom of the Squeezebox Controller? We're not sure what
the root cause of the problem is. Is it a software bug?

That's why I wanted to get a few Duets sent to California to perform
further analysis. I didn't want to get in more than a 2 or 3 to look at
just yet.

I don't know whether they'll have cradles for sale at the BBQ on
Thursday.

However, I'll be giving a demo of something during the BBQ. Bring your
complete Duet over, and we can discuss the battery issue further. Just
ask for me.

 Thanks!

You have a worst-case situation with active wi-fi draining your battery
constantly. I don't think we've checked this specific scenario, so I
don't know the answer to your question.

BTW, what version of Squeezebox Controller firmware are you running? I
thought the Zyxel router issue was fixed in the latest 7.2 release with

Or do you have a Zyxel router that we haven't tested with yet? What
model number of Zyxel router are you running with which specific

Thanks for your quick reply, Ben.
Much appreciated.

Unfortunately, on my SBC the Back Button (left arrow to the lower
left of the scroll wheel) does not do what I'm requesting (and what
you're experiencing on your unit).
Anyway, I'm getting a replacement SBC these days (since the original
unit must have had several faults).
I'll then check again and report my test results.

[slim] Squeezebox2 Wireless Headaches

2008-09-10 Thread cliffo

Hi All,

I keep getting drop outs on my wireless LAN with my SB2.

I am running a Billion 7404-VGP-M with WPA security. Using an external
HDD connected via USB2 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop.

When I connect via ethernet it works flawlessly.

The music will play for a random amount of time, sometimes I even get
through an entire song but never more than 5 minutes before the SB2
will just stop playing and display a Connection Timed Out message.
Often teh display will go blank as well before coming back on but not
starting the music again.

Here' the latest info from the log:

[08-09-10 17:17:12.4330] Slim::Player::Source::errorOpening (1759)

It's obviously a wireless issue of some kind as via ethernet I have no
problems at all.

I have tried changing the wireless channel, wireless power on the

Is anyone able to provide any clues as to what is the problem and way
to fix it.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [slim] MusicIp causing a rescan - why?

2008-09-10 Thread Wirrunna

I changed the SqueezeCenter MusicIP plugin to work differently - I've
added an option so that it won't read tag data from MusicIP (i.e. it
uses SC's scanner to read music files, and only uses MIP for making
mixes). This allowed me to speed up the scanning process, as it only
requests the mixable status for songs that are not mixable when a
 rescan is performed.

I added my changes as a patch to bug 5637
 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5637).

I have created a zip file of the modified plugin on my website - if you
want to try it, download the zip and replace the content in
 server/slim/Plugins/MusicMagic.

 http://www.hergest.demon.co.uk/Music/music.shtml

Philip,
I downloaded and installed your modified plugin and it works as you
said. Took 20 mins off a clear and rescan (from 1 hour 20 minutes), and
a new and changed music scan now takes 2 minutes 19 seconds. Mixes work
the same. Also has reduced the number of albums in my library while
maintaining the same number of tracks.
Makes me ask why did the original version operate the way it did ?
Thank you for the good work.

[slim] loud blast of sound

2008-09-10 Thread lrossouw

Anyway last night I had moved my squeezebox and unplugged it (and
plugged it back in). I am using the line out connection. I think I
also switch off the power.

This morning I woke up about 1m in the air after my sb3 went of at its
alarm setting. However sound coming out was heavily distorted and very
very very loud. Didn't recognise it as music!

I went to the computer and checked all the sound settings, and volume
outs etc, but that wasn't the problem. My other sb3 was also not doing
this.

I could not fix it until I took out the power and plugged it back in.
Then it was all happy. Anyone know what I did wrong?

your router needs to port forward your isp (usually) also needs to
give you a static ip address. then you just hit port 9000 with a
webpage, and set up your mp3 player to hit the same port.

sounds complicated but isn't.

so firstly, check if you have a static ip address. then see if your
router can port forward.

Re: [slim] possible to reach mp3 files from outside my network?

2008-09-10 Thread 4mula1

Connecting remotely is fairly easy to do, but it is highly recommended
that you use ssh or some sort of vpn to protect your network at home.
I've done ssh on Windows in the past and it's not that difficult to do.
http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/

As far as having a static ip address goes, use a service like
dyndns.org if you don't have or can't get one. I used it for awhile
and it works well, although a static ip address is always the best.
You will need to assign your SqueezeCenter box a static ip address
within your own network so that any port forwarding done by your router
goes to the right place. Just make sure that it's out of the range of
addresses being handed out by your dhcp server.

SoftSqueeze works well for remote playing and has a built in ssh client
so you don't need a seperate program to create your tunnels.

[slim] Very simple NAS SB3 network setup

2008-09-10 Thread jclyle

This setup seems like it would work, please correct me if i'm wrong..

Very simple network for SB3 use only:
-Ready NAS duo
-switch
-SB3
-wired connections throughout

The duo and SB3 would be the only devices on the network. I would move
data to the NAS by plugging my laptop into the switch.

I realize I will need to put the NAS and SB3 on a different network
with internet connection to update firmware etc, but once everything is
updated they would be on their own network.

I'm hoping having everything wired will result in better performance
than running the NAS through a wireless router.

Why am I doing this you ask? My listening room is on the 3rd floor, the
wireless router and PC running SqueezeCenter are on the second floor in
my office. The office will be converted to a nursery soon so I'm trying
to move away from a desktop PC as a server...

I did the Genius thing too last night. It's not based on MusicIP. It
will only recommend music that is available on iTunes, which can be
annoying if you have more eclectic tastes. OTOH, MusicIP can identify
every single song in your library and let you create mixes based on
every song. Genius can't do that. However, if you do purchase a lot of
music on iTunes, I can see how it would be useful.

Hi,

I'm running latest 7.2, but as mentioned, the bug concerning ZyXEL

The previous poster's point was that MusicIP performs an acoustical
analysis on every track in your library and can offer suggestions for
any of them. I downloaded iTunes 8 yesterday to try out the Genius
functions, and the first three tracks I played generated no Genius
playlist or recommendations. I thought maybe it was just broken, but
I found a track that worked eventually. At first I postulated like
the previous poster that it only worked on songs that are for sale in
the iTunes Music Store, but a little investigation showed this not to
be the case, either. I tested with an album which is not for sale on
iTMS (nor are any of its tracks available in compilations or
anything), and found that about 50% of its tracks were capable of
generating Genius playlists, and the other half caused iTunes to tell
me the song was unavailable for Genius. It's possible that these
tracks will become mixable as Apple analyzes more data uploaded by
additional users, but I don't really know how their system works, so.

MusicIP, on the other hand, can analyze literally any audio file you
give it and do its best to make recommendations.

With regard to iPod Classic functionality, I believe you won't get the
playlist called Genius on your iPod, but if you like a Genius
playlist you have, you can use the Save Playlist button to create a
playlist that can be synced to your iPod. I'll give that a little
more examination at home tonight, though.

Re: [slim] Very simple NAS SB3 network setup

2008-09-10 Thread GlenL

Presumably you will need to set up the SB3 (and NAS for that matter)
with fixed IP addresses.
I'm assuming of course your NAS is not running a DHCP server.

If that is the case it might be worthwhile choosing IP addresses that
are in the same subnet as the ones dished out by your current router.
Obviously choose ones that are outside your router's DHCP server
scope.

That way if you do need to plug the NAS or SB3 back into your current
network, they would continue to work without having to mess about
changing IP addresses.

[slim] XM on SqueezeBox

2008-09-10 Thread joeR123456

I recently finished setting up 2 duet receivers in my house and they are
working great.

The only thing I miss is my XM radio. I have an account but the SC
plugin for SC 7.2 doesn't seem to function via the remote controller.

I've been checking for an updated plugin but I was also thinking that
since Sirius is accessible via SN (don't need to have the computer on,
which is a plus) and since Sirius and XM have recently merged, are
there plans to offer XM via SN as well?

I don't know of a tech based reason which could prove problematic and
now, it seems, contractual obstacles should not exist either.

Thanks,
Joe

Re: [slim] XM on SqueezeBox

2008-09-10 Thread Howard Passman

Certain things seemed destined to *never* happen.
No extra cradles for the Controller and no SB supported XM.

Quite a few of us would love either and or, but we apparently aren't
making enough noise.

Anyhoo, the XM plugin 2.0 should work, but for the sake of ease, you
should use the Classic skin in SC. Even then you have to always
control it from SC and not the Controller. At least for me that's the
only way you can get it to work. Also, you cannot syncronize two
receivers when playing XM. It'll drive you nuts trying to figure it
out because sometimes it works for a little while.

When you start it in SC it will show on the Controller, but that's all.
Just the ICON.

I'm equally bummed since I really like XM. Internet radio is o.k.
sometimes, but I find my stations are not always there and my favorite
blues station shut down all together. Pandora is O.K. and you should
try it, but it still isn't XM.

Have fun

Howard

Re: [slim] Very simple NAS SB3 network setup

If you want the simplest solution you can get rid of the switch. Get a
cross-over ethernet cable to connect directly the SB3 and the NAS (as
previously said you need first to configure IP address/netmask/gateway
for each device). Then three options:
-If USB is available in your NAS, use it to transfer data from/to your
laptop.
-Otherwise, use the same ethernet cable to connect to your laptop.
-A third option if the SB3 was able to work as a wifi bridge (I'm not
sure of this fact but think it can), would be to use wifi to connect
from your laptop to the NAS.

Problem with fixed addresses that you'd presumable have to change the ip
on the laptop if you connect it to the audio-LAN. With laptops that roam
between LAN's it's usually best to use DHCP on each LAN. I that case I'd
probably recommend a cheap router instead of the switch and use that to
serve as a DHCP server. Leave the WAN port disconnected.

- download will save a file to the PSP (playlist file .m3u) - ok

playlist manipulation - same issues as in the playlist screen

one other thing:
- have you found a solution to fix the top margin issue (approx 15

I hope the information above is helpful.
If you need more specific testing, I'll check this forum/thread more

[slim] Album Artwork Problem

2008-09-10 Thread KDCgrp

I’m running my Duet with an HP MediaSmartServer as the music source. I
have had continual problems with album artwork showing up in the
‘browse’ view. I have to select individual songs in order to see the
artwork.

I have FLAC files with a jpeg named ‘album’ in each folder
corresponding with the album. What happens most often is that when
performing a clear and rescan of my library, each phase of the scanning
progress (i.e. directory scan, playlist scan, etc) is shown – except
artwork scan. It seems to usually stop after ‘merge various artists’. I
say usually because once in a while it does work and the artwork is
scanned. However, anytime new music is added, it invariable lacks the
artwork.

I’ve spent a great deal of time with Support on this and they seem to
not have an answer. Any ideas?

The Netgear ReadyNAS ships with Squeeze Center pre-installed (provided
you get a brand new one, not an older one that still has SlimServer on
it - but even then, upgrading to SC7.x is pretty simple, and I think
just upgrading to Netgear's newest firmware will bring SC along as
well). And as the previous posts indicate, it's apparently readily
available on QNAP servers as well.

[slim] SqueezeBox Power On Issue - Constantly Trying to Connect to Suspended SC

2008-09-10 Thread MikeWynneDub

Hi,

My SB3 has developed a really annoying issue (since 7.2), here's what
happens...

I normally power off all my AV stuff when I'm not using it and suspend
the SC computer.

Formerly, when I'd power on the AV gear the SB3 would show the
Logitech/Squeezebox logos, attempt to gain a network network
connection, promptly give up and settle into a blank screen mode.

Currently, the SB3 powers up and goes into an infinite loop of trying
to connect to the (suspended) SC server.

It's cracking my GF (and me) up this constant distracting scrolling on
the SB3 (message something like 'Can't connect to squeeze center...,
Left to set up...).

When I revive the suspended PC the problem disappears (SB just shows
date/time)

I've tried playing around with the Power On Resume settings under
SettingsPlayer but nothing seems to help.

Am I missing something dead obvious?

Any help very much appreciated...

Thanks

System: SC 7.2-22900 on Ubuntu 8.04

[slim] SBC sometimes confuses or doesn't display artwork

2008-09-10 Thread maggior

This doesn't happen often, but I thought I'd ask since it has happened
more than a few times.

I'll queue up some songs through MusicIP and look through the list.
I've seen where the artwork displayed was completely incorrect. A song
will show with a cover from another album that happens to have a song
featured in the list. Regenerating the playlist in that case made the
problem go away.

I've also seen where not all tracks that should have artwork don't.
Last night, my wife queued up a bunch of songs all from a particular
artist in shuffle mode. None showed artwork. In this case, I
power-cycled the SBC and the problem went away.

Has anybody else noted behavior like this? I've seen this with both
7.1 and 7.2. It is infrequent enough that it doesn't bother me much,
but I wondered if others saw this behavior.

Also of note is that I use the web interface to play music at my desk
at work every day. I have probably spent more time with the web UI
than the SBC. I have never seen any of the behavior described above
with the web UI.

Thanks,

 Sufficient HW for SC, I use a 1,2GHz 1G ram via epia C7 mini-itx CC4.2

How much RAM does the old laptop have.

In the manual you can read this:

 • 733 MHz CPU or faster
 • 256 MB RAM
 • 80 MB hard drive space

One thing about underpowered hardware, if you try transcoding you could
be i a wee spot, hint search forum for transcoding , native file
formatsformats and so, web UI will also be sluggish ,hint use the
remote or controller for daily use not WEb-UI.
The Web UI on my old 700 MHz, 256 MB running SC on Win XP actually
responds pretty quickly to my commmands. But my remote commands
sometime take a long time or don't even translate into action at all
although all connections are up. Took your seggestion and tried
something faster. A 800MHz laptop 256 MB ram, plenty of HD space, on
Ubuntu 8.04, connected via ethernet (I am trying to start from my
slowest gear). It said SC was starting and I did not get any error
message others got. But just to make sure SC is actually running, I
gave it sometime to start before I put http://192.168.1.100:9000 on a
browser to see if the server responded. After a long pause, it failed
and the browser said it took too long for the server to respond and it
timed out.
Does it mean the server was actually running? If so, is this typical
performance with this hardware spec although it meets the min
requirement (BTW I don't have the need to transcode)? If it is
typical, then I need to try out yet another laptop (Pen Mobile 1.8 GHz,
2 GB RAM, etc. in both WinXP and Ubuntu 8.04). Try not to re-task this
laptop as I do most of my browsing on this laptop away from my desk.

Another way to save a tiny amount of energy: leave your car parked
outside instead of in the garage. That way you're driving about 30 feet
less every day, and saving a whole 0.01 ounces of gasoline. At the end
of just 200 years, you'd have saved almost a whole gallon of gas!

It's here r2907 is/was the jive for 7.3:

r2907 is also the jive for 7.2.1, this was the one for 7.3 in my
jive.verson file in my 7.3 install.
And the one that was installed some days ago when I installed the 7.3
that was current then.

but if you actually read my last reply, i think you should use r2873 on
7.3 until a next version is released.
Theres is probably a very good reason for removing it, I found one
serious bug in it, there could be more.
Beta testing is fun you got to see the latest development, but things
like this (or worse )is to be expected a beta IS for testing things.
There was no significant difference between 2873 and 2907 that was
apparent to an end user like me.

It's not a mode per se, but it is an energy saving mode, you just have
to set it up (maybe it does it by default, I don't remember). The

mode, even when undocked and in full use.

[slim] Announcement: iSqueeze lightweight skin for iPhone iPod touch

2008-09-10 Thread tmarti

Hi all,
I've adapted my PSP skin
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35993) to be more
compatible with the vertical form factor of the iPhone and the iPod
Touch. I liked the slickness of iPeng (really rich UI - nice work on
that), but I found it to be a bit heavyweight for my liking. So I
modified my PSP skin, and I'm really enjoying it on my iPod Touch.
I had to change a handful of files from the PSP skin, but the skins
are 98% similar - just some minor differences to make it more
iPhone/iPod friendly. Eventually I'd like to merge the two together to
have a single skin that allows you to choose your device dynamically,
but for now I'll post this skin, get some feedback, and see where this
takes us.

For the newbies out there, all you need to do is unzip the attached
file to in your squeezcenter/html directory (so you have a directory
called ../squeezecenter/html/iSqueeze) and navigate to
http://ip_of_server:9000/iSqueeze.

Looking forward to the feedback,
Tim

 Simon.

Unforunately many people believe an SSH server to be secure by itself
(it is called *secure* shell). Here is a recent SANS article on brute
force attacks:
http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=4408

One of the most important things you can do is disable the ability to
login directly as root by setting PermitRootLogin no in the sshd
configuration file (which will be something like /etc/ssh/sshd_config
on a Linux system).

Another easy thing you can do is limit the machines that are allowed to
connect. Very few people need to allow access to their ssh server from
any machine on the Internet. You can use the /etc/hosts.allow and
/etc/hosts.deny files to limit access (most Linux distros have OpenSSH
compiled to obey these files). Put the line ALL:ALL into
/etc/hosts.deny, and then in /etc/hosts.allow add a line like
sshd:123.456.654.321,456.789.987.654 to permit access from particular
IP address (you can also use hostnames).

Of course, make certain you have strong passwords (that aren't
dictionary words, etc.), or switch to using only key-based logins.

old plug-in as it works, as you all said, it's just not Duet friendly,
but it doesn't seem a far cry that could be fixed.

If I were a programmer I'd try it myself, but alas I am not, so have to
sit back and hope someone pics that up and runs with it at some point..

Re: [slim] SC 7.2 Alarm screensaver/state

 Anyone else noticed this?

hi,

i observe the same, when i hear internet radio streams as alarm. Then
the bell flashes, but SB stays on date/time (probably it's normal, but
i have not read it anywhere). Nevertheless, when i hear playlists (e.g.
from dynamicplaylist), then i see the title,... . But then there is no
possibility to activate the snooze function with the sleep button?!

Re: [slim] Announcement: iSqueeze lightweight skin for iPhone iPod touch

2008-09-10 Thread pippin

Cool. Looks pretty much like iPeng when I started :-)
Although that was with the Nokia skin and in landscape mode.
It's quite fast. How's your experience with the small controls? That
way you've managed to add all three play/add/next buttons on all
pages that I'm still trying to find a way to place in iPeng...
Like that.
