I shifted over to iPeng Telcanto when I busted my windows mobile phone. iPeng is really terriffic. There are a few niggles, but I don't think it's the software, but my brain. For instance it can sometimes require a restart (all of a 4 second problem!) to find devices. Other occasional issues

It sounds like you already have the player in place, and you just want to transport to the kitchen. Unless I am mistaken, you might not want to go to squeezeboxes. Maybe a non apple option is the very simple logitech device

For a kitchen I'd also consider Audioengine A2. They, too, have signal sensing, take up less space and have an unbelievable sound for the size. They don't beat the A5, of course yet forget about the initial they can't have bass at that size reaction. While I highly regard my Boom, it can't

I use iPeng and continue to marvel at the convenience it gives me over the old remote with my squeezebox classic and squeezebox boom. iPeng opens up so much music discovery because it is now easy to see what is available (with Rhapsody and the other services). Much better than the scrolling

One SC7 option often overlooked is creating simple Shortcuts. Just create shortcuts in your Music Folder to point to any/all device ports on your computer (USB, memory card, etc..). Without any need to rescan, all of the new music on that device is immediately available via SC7 Music Folder
