Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-02 Thread pippin

Do you see your player in the server's web interface?
Are you actually connected to your server? Or does it show up under
Music Sources which means you have to select it.
If it's the latter and you are seeing this more often, please try
enabling Settings-iPeng Settings-Forget Last Server.

Could you follow up here?

Re: [slim] MySqueezebox.com login issues

2009-10-02 Thread Squeezemeister

I'm still none the wiser about the debugging and the log upload. I'm
reasonably IT savvy so I could probably work it out, but I'm not going
to bother - life's too short.

Heaven only knows how the average consumer views the Squeezebox
experience, especially at upgrade time. Mine never worked out of the
box as I had to reconfigure my firewall to make even the basics happen.
Now that it works with Squeezecenter, or whatever it's called now under
7.4, I'm leaving well alone. Under wireless, the SB3 would experience
drop-outs and re-buffering, that was solved by going to Powerplugs.
When the thing is working, it is an awesome piece of kit. But the whole
thing has cost me both time and money.

I changed my router from the standard device that came with my
broadband package to a Belkin Vision N1, thinking it would cure my wi-fi
issues. I bought new cordless phones to keep them off the same
frequency as the router. I went out and purchased Powerplugs and a 5m
Ethernet cable. None of this stuff is cheap here in the UK, so whilst I
bought the SB3 at a reasonable price of about £160, I must have spent in
the region of £300 to get it to work reliably, not including all the
time required to invest in finding a workable solution. I could have
bought a Sonos single room solution at that consolidated price of £460
and have had it working out of the box with no further financial or time
investment.

When support solutions involve debugging and uploading log files, I do
wonder how commercially feasible the Squeezebox is, as most people
simply won't accept this.

No argument there. I'm referring more to what Logitech is doing. Quite
honestly, I don't follow the forums here regularly, particularly since
my music setup works quite well. I have plenty of other personal and
professional research to keep up with, so the only time I end up here is
when I need to determine whether I'm going to do an upgrade or (very
occasionally) to see if there are any new plugins that might be of
 interest.

But this time what brought me here was an e-mail from Logitech
informing me about changes that had already occurred. And while there is
undoubtably a wealth of information in the other forums (which I will be
looking through when I have some more time), that community resource
should not completely replace what Logitech should be doing to inform
users about significant development events. I have to believe that most
SqueezeBox owners are not going to actively follow the software
development effort unless they have some very good reason for doing so.

Exactly! I really don't look at the forum every week. I only come
here to check on new items and when there is one, I hang out to find out
what I can because Logitech itself isn't a good source of information.
Sales support and product support are poor, at best, in my opinion.
It's cool that so many people are in to it and especially the folks who
develope the great plugins that are out there, but for the average Joe,
it's rediculous that he has to come here at all.

I use the current crop of high end DSLR cameras, use photoshop and
Nikon editing software and I don't have to go to a forum to use them. A
music playing device should be much simpler than that.

The fundamental issue is that the people who truly understand the
vision behind the Squeezebox concept are not in a position of sufficient
authority. Now that the likes of Sean and Dean are gone, those that
remain who *really* understand are not senior enough to drive things in
the right direction. Big companies like Logitech tend to make product
decisions based on marketing rather than technical research. The
Squeezebox product range (both hardware and software) is now highly
vulnerable to that effect.

By jumping to a lot of hoops I got it playing on my SB3, but you know
how it is, after while you lose track of what actions were performed and
you're not really sure what it was that got things going.
Anyhow, I believe the sequence was something like this: Upgraded SBS to
7.4.1 nightly build, installed Squeezeplay, configured Squeezeplay to
use the SB3 as player, installed the Queen app. Using Squeezeplay I
added the album to the playlist and started playing. After that I could
control the SB3 using its remote. Perhaps one or two of those steps
could be omitted, YMMV.

Pippin, this is a really good release. Thanks for the time and effort, a
vast improvement over 1.1.2.

One thing though that I was really hoping for was the default screen
when viewing the main menus. When you click the left arrow from the Now
Playing screen, it always takes you to the settings page. In all
likelihood I'm going looking for more music to play, not change my
settings. I tend to browse by Artist or, possibly, by Album, so I have
these dragged down to the shortcut bar at the bottom.

Could it remember the page you were last on (between sessions too), or
failing that default to the first of the 4 shortcuts?

Hope this makes sense...

Hi Pippin,

First time I've been able to use it for a while as I had to upgrade to
7.4 a couple of months back after the Slim team fixed a problem for me.

It all works fine except occasionally I find that I'm stuck in Now
playing mode (the three screen swipe) with no way to get out. The icon
at the top of the screen is missing and hence there is no way to break
out.

Just wondering if you've come across that before. I'm going to try and
reproduce to see if I can consistently make this happen as I'm not sure
what is causing this at the moment.

I've attached screen shots of the Now playing screens.

regards
Russ

Great idea but I imagine there would be some legal issues to deal with?

i.e. could Person A set up a music server and allow PersonB access to

Yes, of course, which can be done already. Sure this would make it
easier, but if you thought like that there are hundreds of other apps,
tools and pieces of hardware that would never have been created, and
stream.mp3 wouldn't exist :)

It does. You fell into a bug that will be partly fixed in 1.2.1
The problem here is, that you probably changed the Tab Bar (on the
lower end of the screen) while being connected to MySqueezebox.com so
the first item now defaults to i.
You probably can't remove it while being connected to SBS so please go
to MySB, exchange the i for something else and then switch back to
SBS. In 1.2.1 you will be able to remove the item also from SBS and long
term the way it should be is this:

 out.

Just wondering if you've come across that before. I'm going to try and

what is causing this at the moment.

I've attached screen shots of the Now playing screens.

Ooops. That's bad.
I believe this means that the menu from which you came when you entered
NowPlaying is no longer there, but this should not happen because you
can't switch players from anywhere other than NowPlaying. Weird.
Or did maybe your player disconnect while you were browsing... but that
should not be an issue.
Please file a ticket as soon as you find a way to reproduce this.
I see you have more than one player, I believe you might be able to
recover by switching to a different player.

[slim] Back to 7.3.3

2009-10-02 Thread allanweinman

Just installed 7.3.3 back on top of 7.4. 7.4 killed XM Radio
functionality and I use that 50% of the time. So 7.4 was a
disappointment in that Logitech's 'upgrade' stopped it from working.

Anyway, just in case anyone wanted to know. All I did was install
7.3.3 right on top of 7.4 and it went totally fine. No problems. And I
the XM Radio plugin just worked without any issue.

Just to be clear, I don't have XM or access to it so I don't use it.
Having said that, since to use XM it takes a plugin, the plugin could be
broken with SBS. So I don't think SBS is faulty or broken with respect
to XM, but rather more likely the plugin needs updated to work with SBS.

They are listed under:

Here, you don't have the Heart Icon and the option to save them as

I am at a lost as to how I was able to save them previously in 7.3 as

I will try the boom controller suggestions later this evening. But
I'm thinking they wont show up there as playlists either. (?).

instigating? If so, is there any harm in allowing it to happen? Thanks.

hopefully it will work for you.

Sounds like a plan! Thanks. I will try that and report back.

YEP! That worked!

Actually, all of my SQL playlists were already grouped under RANDOM.
That may well have been how I got them there (favorites) in the first
place (?). Since I really dont remember and it was a long time ago.

Thanks again!, - as these Random Playlists were really the only way I

[slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-02 Thread Goodsounds

The company is releasing new hardware and software and making lots of
changes. Without addressing whether that has or hasn't been well managed
lately, I don't get why so many people think it's ok to have a hissy fit
to display their unhappiness.

Do any of you work with customers? If so, you realize it is the ones
who are polite and considerate that people make an extra effort for. You
just want to blow off steam? This isn't the right place to do that.
The company's employees are working hard to get things right, it isn't
reasonable to be unfairly critical or impolite to them.

Maybe a new forum is needed - for comments from teenagers with out of
balance hormones, and older people who act in a similar way.

If you want help or want to report a problem, why not do so politely?
Are you unhappy and you want people to know about it? Fine, but why not
be a bit more considerate of others when you express your views.

Just to get things off on a better footing, I'll say to the company's
people - Way to go, a lot of us really appreciate what you do.

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-02 Thread Slackerini

While I agree that the excessive whinging and getting into name calling
is silly, people have a right to be upset and unhappy.

I work with customers everyday and also have the pleasure of dealing
with less-than-pleasant customers when my work isn't up to snuff. That
is life.

However, It seems to me that the software was clearly rushed out the
door to hit a corporate deadline. That said, I too appreciate
everyone--slim employees and the developers on this forum--for all their
contributions in sorting out the bugs.

I've been a Slim customer for 4-years and my system has been running
24/7 until now. I made the mistake of rushing to upgrade--something I
haven't historically done and am suffering the consequences. I can't
even seem to find the recommended system requirement for 7.4 to check if
part of my problem is that my server is underpowered.

I think part of the struggle that Slim-Logitech is going through is
that their target market has gone from a very tech-saavy, DYI/hobbyist
community that was tolerant of hiccups in the development process and
willing to spend hours tinkering with the product/software, to a broader
consumer-oriented product that customers expect to work out of the box,
without hours of tinkering or learning how to write code or posting
logfiles.

there are major issues is ¨rude¨ in the eyes of the unconditional SB

But I speak up when things don´t work out that well, and furthermore
think it is my obligation to a common cause: to make this a better
product for us, and adopted by many more.

2009-10-02 Thread regalma1

I work in product development and have done customer support. Our
products are far more complex and we reach far further with each new
model, but we can't bring out stuff full of obvious bugs as 7.4 appears
to be. Here they have even changed their hardware and their new FW is
causing all sorts crashes. I mean how can you produce FW for a very
mature piece of hardware that doesn't even do that much and not catch
things cause even routine operations to fail. Looks like they don't have
a formal SW QA process.

Maybe the difference is that they are selling to the public, while we
sell to professionals. And frankly, since the invention of the personal
computer we consumers have come expect things not to work, and to get
lousy support.

The computer industry exploits that to the max. I have never dealt with
an industry that has such lame support and ships such obviously flawed
products, well except maybe GM in the '70's. But look where that led.

Most of my Squeezeboxes are wired and work just fine.

Well, you obviously need WiFi to get your iPod touch connected to your
network.
Apart from that, your iPod doesn't have to talk to the Squeezebox
directly, it needs to talk to the server, which is either Squeezebox
Server (SqueezeCenter) or MySqueezebox.com (SqueezeNetwork).
The only thing you have to make sure is that your server is on the same
subnet as your iPod or the server autodetection doesn't work (e.g. NOT
192.168.0.x vs. 192.168.1.x) but that's usually the case for standard
installations.

Re: [slim] Change for change's sake is bad

2009-10-02 Thread DotSystem

Email is fine for upgrade or new product announcements but don't clutter
my Boom clock radios with it.

Ever see a Boom go out of sync with its front panel or remote? You
might be trying to adjust the volume but it appears not to respond. A
minute later it is blasting at full volume because it queued up all the
key presses. Last time I had this problem there were issues at the
Logitech end.

If there are problems on their network causing this type of degradation
that impedes the operation of the player, I would like the front panel
display to alert me so I can decide whether to alert Logitech or ride it
out. Thats a useful notification.

In a mixed system, I have diffrent expectation of a Boom than a
Transporter or Duet. I want the Boom to function as basic internet radio
that does not wake me up with the ghost of removed alarms. When my wife
turns the volume knob, she expects the volume to increase (exactly then)
And the players, I just want them to stream reliably. Are we there yet?
Don't care about keeping up with the Joneses.

Otherwise I prefer the upgrades and 'innovations' to be transparent to
me.

Why should my Boom self-update its firmware unless I ask it to or grant
permission? The 7.4 document on the web site suggests it is necessary
to upgrade to 7.4 to connect to your network but the Boom firmware
self-updates and reverts when you switch back and forth between
connection types in the presence of 7.3.3. So what exactly does 7.4
install package do for Boom beyond stopping the firmware swapping
frenzy?

If you want to make the Boom do something useful in response to
connection status, why not have the Boom fall back to your network when
SC is off or to SC when your network is degraded?

Since there are no separate provisions for upgrading individual
products, you are forcing users to upgrade them all at once. Upgrade to
solve a problem in one unit (dismal Duet behavior) got me rebuffering
issues on my Transporter.

Perhaps a consumer should only own one type of Logitech product and
then all would be well. It could all be explained in a Wiki.

Guess Sean knew when to bail.

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-02 Thread iPhone

I think a few people are not thinking before they leap.

One does not HAVE to upgrade to SBS 7.4, unless one buys a Radio. SBS
7.4 IS REQUIRED for Radio.

Having said that, SBS 7.4 HAD to be released as production or Radios
could not be released and sold. The change is then due to Radio, so if
one doesn't have one don't upgrade unless one wants to take advantage of
the Controller updates that are included in SBS 7.4 also.

And I will end with I personally haven't had any issues upgrading to
SBS 7.4 but that doesn't mean that others might have to make an
adjustment or two. I have been using the Beta for what seems like
forever, the changes seem more subtle to me.

recently bought a new Apple Airport Extreme router. I'm replacing an
older Airport Extreme. This time I created a Guest Network which lets
me have what I assume is basically a virtual secondary network for
guests to use and my iPhones/ipod. On their own, they seem to be working
great. I have static ip (10.0.1.?) addresses for everything on my main
network, and DHCP (171.???.???.???) on the guest one.

Here's my problem which I only discovered because of the iPeng iPhone
app. I recently bought the newest version (1.2) and it works great if my
server computer and the phone are on the same network. But, I want the
iPhone to be on the guest network and leave the server on my main
network. I tried adding all variations of the server's ip address as the
instructions describe (10.0.1.2, 10.0.1.2:9000 and http://10.0.1.2:9000)
but apparently because the iphone is on the guest network, it isn't
letting me do it.

The question: Can I access a device/computer on a different wireless
network? And how is it done?

I realize now that if this is possible, I could have a lot more devices
on my guest network so I don't add more ip conflicts on my main
network.

Thanks!
SL

Re: [slim] Nice Job on 7.4

2009-10-02 Thread oddquad

Just adding my +1 to the thanks for the work put in to Squeezebox Server
7.4.

My installation could not have been easier or more successful. ALL my
plugins, services (now Apps), and preferences came along for the ride.

After a complete rescan, everything was working just as I
expected/wanted.

For such a major retooling, I am pleased at how well it turned out!

Great Job Team!

How do you do announce what you're listening to on FB in 7.4?

If you've added the Facebook app from App Gallery and supplied your
credentials, you should then have Share on facebook in the context
menu which appears when you press + (more) from the now playing screen.
Choose that and you will get the option to publish the song, artist, or
album that you are listening to.

It is possible to configure your SC 7.3 instance to not force a player
to downgrade firmware. I do this when testing new versions. I haven't
tried running a Boom with 7.4 firmware against SC 7.3, but I do have a
Classic running 7.4 firmware against a 7.3 SC instance (probably
something like 7.3.1; I don't upgrade my production server to minor dot
patch releases unless needed) and it seems to work fine. Logitech
typically (though perhaps not always) forces the exact firmware match
because it makes life easier on their support QA staff -- fewer
variables to account for. Often newer firmware works fine with older SC
software -- I've never seen a problem.

[slim] SoftSqueeze...???

2009-10-02 Thread glmason

Do the new Logitech masters support SoftSqueeze, or a way to use a
computer to emulate a slimdevice? I've had a SlimDevice since 2004 (the
original slimdevice) and I've always been able to supplement the
hardware by using a couple of network computers to distribute music
throughout the house... but now with version 7.4 I can not find out how
to configure it any more... has it gone the way way of corporate
greed?... it has been a real challenge as a user to fight the user
friendly interface. Now I can not find out how to get the the good old
Softsqueeze to play nicely, am I looking in all of the wrong places?

Thanks in advance... Larry Mason

For a long long time, Softsqueeze was a project not written by Slim
Devices at all, but a labor of love by Richard Titmuss. Semi-recently
Richard was hired by Slim (though I think by that time they'd been
bought by Logitech, but I may be wrong) and sadly (?) Richard seemed to
have a lot less time to work on it.

So it's been returned to the community for the official release.

You can grab a copy from http://softsqueeze.sf.net/

Alternatively, there is SqueezePlay, which is similar to what runs on
the Controller, Radio and Touch. It's more official and can be
downloaded from the nightly builds site:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4

Tho as the download location hints at, SqueezePlay is still not totally
official and may or may not work for you.

Personally, I still use SoftSqueeze.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v1.5 (ACC)

2009-10-02 Thread blahbobbyblah

Once I run ACC, two sessions of IE8 open up but they do not display the
catalog, only my internet home page. I get a window saying that the ACC
is finished with the number of tracks processed. It also says that the
generated files are placed in: C:\Windows\system32\AlbumCatalogs\ but
I find nothing there.

I am running Vista 64 and I am connecting remotely to WHS. Any clue
what is going on? What am I doing wrong?

[slim] 7.4 not happy - gone back to 7.3

2009-10-02 Thread iisfaq

I have installed 7.4 twice and I have found some problems and am not
happy with it.

First off I am running SqueezeCenter on Windows Server 2008.

On 7.3 it works without a problem with Music IP running as a service on
my Windows 2008 Server. On 7.4 it stops while importing from the Music
IP Library with an unexpected error has occured.

Also I listen to a lot of music through the Duet Controller.

On 7.4 I click timeouts and clicks and loss of audio all the time.
Every few seconds, including some rebuffering messages.

On 7.3 I never have any of these. I removed 7.4 and installed 7.3 and
everything works, but I do have these issues on 7.4

Has anyone else experienced this?

I also found that the SqueezePlay was sort of corrupted saying it was
wanting to connect to Server which was what I originally named my
Library when it was 7.3, but with 7.4 I replaced it with Chris's
Music

I found that you could sometimes get a choose player menu item and
then I could find the right library and other times it was missing.

Also every time that the DUET controller restarts I would get a message
saying I have just upgraded to 7.4 and have to click on Continue. I
restarted it about 10 times - still the same message every time.

I will post some bugs tomorrow but I really do not want to go back to
7.4 at the moment since 7.3 is working so well for me.

Re: [slim] 7.4 not happy - gone back to 7.3

2009-10-02 Thread Gitfinger

I had what's probably the same problem with the scanner failing due to
an error when doing the MusicIP scan.
The latest build of 7.4.1 fixed the scanning problem I was having
(defect #14470).

Everything else has been working for me, though I'm still struggling
with all the changed terminology (time will cure this).
