Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-05-03 Thread Gerry123

Have you changed the method for retrieval of album art?

I'm going to find this difficult to explain because nobody else seems
to have this problem.

I have a folder where several hundred tracks are stored, each with
embedded artwork that doesn't have a folder.jpg.

On previous versions when the compilation album was playing
squeezecommander used to display the embedded album art for each track.
On the latest update SC just displays the first track album art and
doesn't change on track change.

Is this intentional?

Cheers

Hi Gerry,

No, that's not intentional. :-)

Does the cover art show up correctly in the folder/album/playlist view,
i.e. is it only wrong in the NowPlaying view?

I didn't explain myself very well in last post.

The same album art shows up in the list as well as the NP screen. I.E.
the first track of the album rather than the actual track album art.

I appreciate these are not actual bought albums, they are albums I've

belong to an album per se. But it used to work prior to this update.

Many thanks

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-05-03 Thread azaz44

Wow, that's a fast response. I just installed and it's a big
improvement. Things I complained about before work now great. It's
going to by my app of choice now.

What I really like:

- pause, next, prev from every screen!

- multiline display for items with long strings (when browsing)

- these little dots which tell me how deep in the tree structure I am
when browsing the library (unfortunately small and not clickable)

- I like that it's switching between two modes: now playing and
browse. It's more intuitive than iPeng's approach in which you go
from one to another.

- plugins work

- it remembers where I was while browsing music

Issues quickly found are (most are minor):

- my plugin works, but the icon for it is wrong (shows some two lights
pointing to the stage)

- in my plugin I can show a context menu for an item with add, play,
insert etc. If I select Add it works correctly - adds to the playlist
and closes the popup menu (goes to parent). If I choose Play however,
it goes to another menu with just one item called Play. It seems to
be SqueezeCommander addition. (But the action works at the end)

- on players menu: in iPeng you can click on the song title (white text
on dark blue bg) to activate the player. Actually I found this is the
best way to do this, otherwise you never know if you hit something that
makes some action, like volume control or player on/off. This doesn't
work here.

- am I the only one which dislikes the way you select the player in
iPeng (and here?). This screen is maybe great for advanced control of
all players at once or synchro, but for normal operation... Logitech
app is way better here because selecting the player is easy and you
always see your player name with big font.

- if you are in the library, you have a button to go back ala iPeng.
Not sure if it's really needed, since Android devices have hardware go
back..

- loading any music library list in iPeng seems to be faster. I think
it is because the UI makes it feel faster (animated icon) plus iPeng
starts loading stuff before the menu starts sliding, not sure how it's
here. (But I also restarted my server recently, it might be things are
slower now, because not cached...)

- everything is made the way high contrast + bold fonts, not sure if
it's good for longer use :)

- dots shown, when you can slide the screens, are small and not
clickable. They are iPhone style, not Android style. Clicking them
would actually come handy while browsing music.

- sliding the screen to go one level higher in the tree, when browsing
music, works, but is not really robust (AFAIR same applies to iPeng).

- some polish strings are cutted from the first special polish
character to the end. Not sure if it's translation issue or program.
Some other work fine. (ó works ok, #322;, #347;, #263; etc.
don't).

- on this panel with play, prev, next it feels like sth is missing.
Maybe becayse of getting used to iPeng, maybe because assymetry. How
about adding some useful action there.

About selecting the player. I think the player name should be shown
always, with big letters, even if it takes space. Additionally I think,
it should be always shown at the top of the screen, not the bottom,
because this is where you always start and where you find most
information. I cannot count how many times I started music on the wrong
player with iPeng, because I didn't look at the bottom of the screen.

Then, when you select the player, it should be just player names and
nothing more, otherwise it's cluttered and confusing. Multi player
control as it is now is great, but as an addition to the above. It
might be my opinion only, but just try Logitech app and see how easy
and great it is.

Ok enough :)

I also want to add that this is a great app as it is now and worth the
money :)

I'm a bit reluctant to change that yet, as I don't know if any device
has a dark grey background in the notification area.

I can live with that :)

the Logitech App: if you don't stop the Logitech App (i.e. leave it via
the home button), it returns to the last menu where you left, even when
started via SqueezePlayer. This works fine an all devices I tried.
If you haven't been in the Logi-App for a long time, then maybe Android
decided to remove the App from the background, so it will be restarted.

Nothing I can do there - and that this App has a forced unnecessary
 splashscreen I cannot change :(.
In my experience using SqueezeCommander is much more convenient, as it
 starts much faster.

This is not much of an issue for me anymore, as SqueezeCommander just
got a great update and is going to be my app of choice.

But in case you want reports about it, this is how it works here. (I
evaluated more).

If Logitech app is initially started with SqueezePlayer it works as
expected. Everytime I switch to it from SqueezePlayer, it is instant.

If Logitech app is started separately by running the app from Android
UI, then SqueezePlayer will not switch to it, but rather start another
one. Moreover, every next time I try it, is starts another one (show
the splash screen again). And now I'm in logitech app and try to quit
it. It asks for confirmation, than quits and guess what, I have
logitech app on screen again. I have to quit it as many times as I did
start it before :) So I guess many instances are started, although
built-in task manager shows always only one.

I also tested the same with SqueezeCommander and here it seems to
behave correctly in all cases.

Cheers

Re: [slim] How would you like to manage playlists ?

2011-05-03 Thread socistep

1.
What kind of device would you like to use when doing advanced playlist
management ? A normal computer/laptop ? A tablet ? A netbook ?
Something else ?

Normal computer and when I get one later in the year then a tablet

2.
Do you have any examples of good playlist management user interfaces in
some other app which you feel has solved the problem in a good user
friendly way ?

I'm not a massive fan of Apple products much but I actually like iTunes
for playlists and also banshee on Ubuntu, the main thing for manual
playlists for me is to bve able to view my collection and search easily
and then also review other playlists

3.
Is there a reason you would like to continue using the third party
application you currently use even if a better user interface for
playlist management would be offered through SBS ?

Only for managing my old ipod

4.
Is it important to integrate it with some other application ? For
example integration with dragdrop with the operating system file
manager or something similar ?

Not for me

5.
In case not already answered in question 2 and 4, do you have some
ideas what kind of features or user interface layout you think is
important for advanced playlist management ?

Mentioned above, also I would like to be able to link to dynamic/smart
playlists, e.g. so I could quickly review my 5* tracks and pull out
tracks from there - that would be a great feature, so for example there
is about 1000 tracks in that and I could get into that and pull out 100
tracks for a specific reason

6.
How do you do advanced playlist management today ? Which app ? From a
computer, laptop, tablet or something else ?

Mainly Banshee on a laptop which creates an m3u into the playlists
folder, I also use the playlist

However I would also say that my time spent producing manual playlists
now is pretty minimal, I use 2 main sources to get my playlists

1) Your excellent dynamic playlists plugin and specifically a 'top
rated tracks', this is the heaviest used playlist on my setup, we use
this for casual listening/having friends round etc.
2) Spotify playlists - Since getting a spotify premium subscription
then I use spotify playlists a lot, choosing from my android phone
mainly via sharemyplaylists.com

[slim] New computer to act as server..?

2011-05-03 Thread daytripper

Hi there

I've a lot of troubles stemming (I think) from running SqueezeServer on
a USB HDD - it's practically unusable.

Fortunately(!), my home PC has broken, and I'm looking to replace it.
High on my list of requirements for a new machine would be the ability
to run quietly as a media server for my SB system.

The system would be used for casual surfing some work, so I'm
thinking a Nettop (compact PC). I have some questions..:

1. Would a Windows 7-based system have the ability to sit quietly in an
'always-on' function and run the SB server? I'd want it running almost
silently on minimum power, rather like a Mac can (a Mac is too
expensive for me...)

2. Any particular minimum specs needed for this kind of system..? I
know very little about buying PCs these days...

thanks!

Also, a context menu doesn't look any different than a normal menu, but

Right now, that's intended.
I mean, there is no real difference between a context menu and a

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-05-03 Thread flattermann

azaz44;628914 Wrote:

 - my plugin works, but the icon for it is wrong (shows some two lights
 pointing to the stage)

Which plugin is that?

I'm using the icon url from window - icon-id.
If no icon url can be found, I'm showing this default icon (two
lights).

 - in my plugin I can show a context menu for an item with add, play,
insert etc. If I select Add it works correctly - adds to the playlist
and closes the popup menu (goes to parent). If I choose Play however,
it goes to another menu with just one item called Play. It seems to
be SqueezeCommander addition. (But the action works at the end)

I'm trying to avoid touch-to-play.
Of course, in this case - if the element is named PLAY - it should play
directly.

What's the text of this (play) item?
What's the JSON command?

 - on players menu: in iPeng you can click on the song title (white text
on dark blue bg) to activate the player. Actually I found this is the
best way to do this, otherwise you never know if you hit something that
makes some action, like volume control or player on/off. This doesn't
 work here.

I prefer clicking on the player name itself, because the song title is
ambiguous.
If you have a sync group of several player, which one should be
selected by clicking the song title? The master?

I'll probably change it that it will automatically select the current
sync master.

 - am I the only one which dislikes the way you select the player in
iPeng (and here?). This screen is maybe great for advanced control of
all players at once or synchro, but for normal operation... Logitech
app is way better here because selecting the player is easy and you
always see your player name with big font.

I do not really like the big player name, because it take pretty much
space and I normally know which player I selected.

But making it easier to select another player may be a good idea.

Right now, if you long-press the player name on the bottom, you will
jump to the PlayerServerScreen.
Maybe I should change this so that a Player Selection Popup opens
directly and you can select the player you want.
What do you think?

 - if you are in the library, you have a button to go back ala iPeng.
Not sure if it's really needed, since Android devices have hardware go
 back..

Yes, this is just shown for convenience to see which was the previous
screen.
And the (vertical) space in the ActionBar is taken anyway, so it's not
so bad, IMHO.

Not sure about this one, for me it's as fast as iPeng.
The good thing is that more stuff is cached in SqueezeCommander, so if
you e.g. open an album again, it will probably be very fast. :-)

 - everything is made the way high contrast + bold fonts, not sure if
it's good for longer use :)

I'm not sure either. :-)
Nothing is set in stone, so this may change in the future.

 - dots shown, when you can slide the screens, are small and not
clickable. They are iPhone style, not Android style. Clicking them
would actually come handy while browsing music.
There were clickable in the earlier Betas, but it was too difficult to
hit them.
And making them bigger is IMHO a waste of space.

PS: You can long-press on the (soft or hard) back key to get back to
the HomeMenu.

 - sliding the screen to go one level higher in the tree, when browsing
music, works, but is not really robust (AFAIR same applies to iPeng).

I've noticed that as well.
I should probably reduce the minimum swipe distance...

 - some polish strings are cutted from the first special polish
character to the end. Not sure if it's translation issue or program.
Some other work fine. (ó works ok, #322;, #347;, #263; etc.
 don't).

Could you give an example of such a string and where it is shown?

 - on this panel with play, prev, next it feels like sth is missing.
Maybe becayse of getting used to iPeng, maybe because assymetry. How
about adding some useful action there.

Any ideas?
In the previous version, there was also a Clear Playlist icon, but
that is pretty useless and hence I've moved it to the Playlist Edit
mode. :-)

Squidget is an Android widget.
Android widgets don't allow you anything except reacting to click
event. No long click, sliders, just single click. I thought of setting
some sort of manual on Squidget blog, but:
a. It is very unlikely that any one will read it. It's either the UI is
well thought of, or people won't use it. So if you think the repeat is
something you need to look up the function of each button , then I
probably need to change it. Would a textual indication work for you?
b. Squidget is new and therefore changes every few days (especially the
layouts). Once I get these stable for a few weeks, I'll document at
least the 4x4 layout. In any case I believe it will probably be read
only by people planning to purchase it rather than actual users.
c. In general, you can press anything on Squidget with no damage to
your music library / server settings. It's read only. So go ahead and
press those buttons and see what happens.

I prefer clicking on the player name itself, because the song title is
 ambiguous.
If you have a sync group of several player, which one should be
selected by clicking the song title? The master?

I'll probably change it that it will automatically select the current
 sync master.

I don't know, but it's confusing, as it is in iPeng. How about this:
- make this icon with a player symbol select the player (also better
icons would be great, I liked these which iPeng was using before
more).
- put next icon next to it, to power on/off with the icon which really
looks like power on/off (like what is shown for a second when you click
it).
- this leave enough space for player name and volume control

But maybe it's better to ask people who like and need this screen. For
me this screen is just overloaded and as soon as you make some easy
player selection, I will stop using it and never see it again :)

Just found that I have to be really careful with scrolling on it. I
have 3 hardware players + squeezeslave + Android SqueezePlayer since
today + iPeng's player, so I have to scroll the list all the time. Have
to be careful to not start scrolling at volume control, because it
doesn't work then. Would love to just select the player in two clicks
without any scrolling.

I do not really like the big player name, because it take pretty much

 What do you think?

I think it would be way better than it is now, but not perfect. As I
understand, the main priority is to have big squared area for artwork?

Then I cannot find any great idea, but this place where you display
song details looks perfect for a player name :)

Somehow I'm pretty much convinced that having big player name at the
top is the only way to go.

 I've noticed that as well.
I should probably reduce the minimum swipe distance...

I think the other problem is, that with other screens as soon as you
start dragging, it reacts. Here you have to make the complete gesture
so it scrolls.

Could you give an example of such a string and where it is shown?

Main menu (browsing) - Sk#322;adanka losowa (in iPeng), Sk here.
Settings - Player settings - most items here. Don't know what they
mean, but they are Wy, D, U, Nazwa us
Settings - advanced settings is writte double Ustawienia
zaawansowaneUstawienia zaawansowane.
Settings - Advanced Settings - Squeezebox - Modu (I guess it means
plugins, so should say Modu#322;y).
Pressing big + gives some current track menu with:
Usu should probably spell Usu#324; (remove)

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-05-03 Thread azaz44

I looked for some space and this is what I came with. The UI is not
right, because top part should look different, and be more visualy
separated from the song title, but I found some space :)

This is now playing screen with assumption, that play-rev-ff-panel is
always visible on this screen. Other screens are less problematic,
because they don't need fixed squared space for artwork. Personally I
would make play-ref-ff-panel slide out of the bottom of the screen on
other screens. So if the panel is hidden, there would be some small
indication at the bottom telling you can slide something out.

The height of this thing which I added at the top is exactly the height
of what I cutted out at the bottom.

Update: just found the dots are missing...

What kind of device would you like to use when doing advanced playlist
management ? A normal computer/laptop ? A tablet ? A netbook ?
Something else ?

- Def PC + Tablet + Touch screen

2.
Do you have any examples of good playlist management user interfaces in
some other app which you feel has solved the problem in a good user
friendly way ?

- I agree about iTunes entirely (I use Rockbox on my iPods and it aint
very good at playlists either) - I actually like the way Winamp does it
in the full Bento skin - i.e. list the tracks in an album + right click
on the one you want, click on enque - creates a playlist really
quickly.

3.
Is there a reason you would like to continue using the third party
application you currently use even if a better user interface for
playlist management would be offered through SBS ?

No

4.
Is it important to integrate it with some other application ? For
example integration with dragdrop with the operating system file
manager or something similar ?

See my description of the Winamp Bento skin feature.

5.
In case not already answered in question 2 and 4, do you have some
ideas what kind of features or user interface layout you think is
important for advanced playlist management ?

6.
How do you do advanced playlist management today ? Which app ? From a
computer, laptop, tablet or something else ?

Always through Winamp - just beacuse it is so simple. Just have to save
it as a file which can be read by something other than Winamp!

Sounds like your settings are all gone haywire. Maybe you should try to

[slim] Can I make my music server a music source?

I have my music on a PC and it streams music to my hi-fi in another part

Can I make the PC playback music in a playlist which I've created in

Re: [slim] KFI 640 AM Los Angeles

2011-05-03 Thread JimInPT

Has anybody discovered any updated info on this issue?

I can access KFI intermittently - this morning I couldn't tune it at
all, but about 11am (PST) I was successful tuning it in, then it
dropped after about 20 minutes and was lost again. I usually get no
error messages, just no audio while the display shows now
playing. All my other longtime radio presets are working just
fine.

I use Squeezebox Server 7.5.1 under WinXP on a network server - it
feeds one Classic, two Booms, a single SoftSqueeze and (soon) a Radio.

KFI is always the station I have problems tuning; any insights
appreciated as it's also one of my favorites. Thanks.

Re: [slim] Can I make my music server a music source?

2011-05-03 Thread aubuti

Sure. Use one of the Squeezebox software players. Your choices are:

1) SqueezePlay (http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.6):
This looks and feels like the interface on the Radio, Touch, and
Controller.

2) SoftSqueeze (search the forums for the link to the latest
community-supported build): This is a Java-based player, that emulates
earlier SBs (SB3/Classic and Transporter), using a graphical version of
the infrared remote control.

3) squeezeslave (search the forums for the link to the latest version):
This is a headless player. You invoke it via command line, and it runs
without any graphical interface at all. You can control it via the SBS
web ui, because it appears as one of the players on your network.

does quality 0 mean VBR v0, or have I misunderstood something?

Well, to be honest, I don't know.

It seems that the SBS should be able to transcode to different formats
(not only MP3), see
http://svn.slimdevices.com/slim/7.6/trunk/server/Slim/Web/HTTP.pm?r1=31552r2=31551pathrev=31552

From the SBS code:

Quality will be used if it is between 0-9.
Otherwise, quality 9 is assumed.

Bitrate can be any number and is set to 0 if not defined.

The actual interpretation of Quality/Bitrate is probably done by the
chosen encoder (LAME, FLAC, OGG)...

It's normal that the new version asks for MySB credentials.
(The MySB credentials are not stored anymore on the phone, only the
generated UUID of the device is authorized once on MySB.)

I'm not sure about local password-protected SqueezeBoxServers.
(I think, the credentials should survive an update from 0.9.5.x to
0.9.6.1, but I'm not sure.)

EDIT: And why do I have MySb.com listed twice? Once as Disconnected and
 one as Connected?

Maybe you should remove the App once and reinstall it.
(Afterwards, you definitely need to re-enter your credentials.)

And why does it suddenly speak Swedish to me... Half of the menus and
commands are in Swedish, previously it was all English. Looks really
ugly, how do I set it all to English?
I'm sending the language/locale of your phone to the SBS, therefore it
will also answer in this language.

 EDIT^2: Please... I can't stand this Swenglish mish-mash... how do I
get it all to be English as it was before...?

Setting your phone to English is not an option?

Re: [slim] New computer to act as server..?

2011-05-03 Thread w3wilkes

WOW, these are very personal questions. Mostly you need to really ask
yourself what will do the job for you...

Do you plan on keeping your music on the external HDD or are you
planning on getting a large enough HDD in the PC to move your library
onboard? Do you run SBS plugins, the more you run the slower the
server. If you're planning on using it for work, surfing and email
along with hosting your SBS is the small netbook screen really going to
do the job for you? Most laptops today run fairly quiet so I don't see
the big concern there.

My own opinion is to lean towards overkill, a minimum of a dual core
2.0 GHz, HDD at least 7200 RPM and plenty of room for growth, 4GB
memory and 64 bit Windows. You'll notice the difference when it comes
to maintenance tasks like rescanning your music, browsing the library
from the webUI. Generally a snappier system.

Just my 2¢

As others have stated - without knowing what you *really* do with it
recommendations are hard, and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The system in my sig is great as an always on SBS, and just draws
20-something watts... but I also have a higher powered system to do
real work.

There are now excellent Intel lga1155 boards that have both a lot of
umph, aggressive power management features, and fit into a miniITX
board that is whisper quiet. For a silent system you ahve to do some
research before you buy the components, though - I recommend
