I have a Linux system, it keeps drive names in the playlists as a
reference. I guess I should have thought about it when naming my

Can't you just use Replace all in a text editor or sed to change
drive name part of the path in the playlist files to the new drive name
?

Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

- Its excellent audio quality
- Best price/performance on the market
- Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution
- Great support for online streaming services
- Great support for browsing and playing local music
- The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on
- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new
  features/bugs
- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

I set up a boom for an 85+ year old woman connected via mysb.com. No
problems almost a year later. And again, she just hits the power button
and presets. When firmware updates hit, she has to hit a few keys, but
somehow, she has done this without even calling me.

In both cases they have robust networks and both are using wifi for
 everything.

Please, when you keep telling the story of your brother, you should
also tell a little more, because normal people won't ever use it this
way.
Only mp3, never turn it off nor disconnect the drive, never add one
single file (!!!), which is what you finally stated once after a lot of
questions (I was quite surprised he never had a problem, but with this
informations, it explains a lot ...)

Logitech is not selling computers servers for dummies, who would be
supposed to have a computer aware guy available to install, manage, and
support the thing.

Squeezebox products are not professional systems sold to companies
where there is a dedicated technical team so that normal users don't
need to install, understand, and support the system.

You can make them work, I can make them work, geek can make them work.

It seems to me a bit unfair to let people think that it works
flawlessly, and they probably did something wrong.

Squeezeboxes are great, but the software is not user friendly, it is
not stable, it is not reliable, and it is not tailored for normal
people who are not playing with computers.

It is a very bad to let people think otherwise if we don't want
Logitech to drop this product line.

The other thing I find about using ReplayGain, even worse than my
disappointment with its effectiveness, is that it makes listening to
internet radio very inconvenient. Virtually every RG tag in my library
is a negative value, with most somewhere between -5 and -7dB. When
internet radio is played it BLASTS on all three systems, forcing me to
run around the house turning everything down. If I want to switch back
to local library listening, it's the reverse. I listen to internet
radio much less since setting RG on my Squeezeboxes.
Completely agree. Even services like Napster and Last.FM stream their
tracks un-normalised (or using a value different to the standard 89db),
meaning you still need to adjust your volume control regularly.

[slim] OT: Time Machine USB disks

2011-07-25 Thread cliveb

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I know there are quite a few Mac users
around here and am hoping one of you might know the answer to this.

My daughter has a Macbook and needs an inexpensive external disk for
use as a Time Machine backup device. I bought her a bog-standard 320GB
Freecom USB2.0 bus-powered 2.5 disk. It seemed to work fine for
several months, then Time Machine said it had failed. So I
reinitialised it using Windows diskpart and all seemed well again. Then
a month or so later Time Machine said it had failed once more. OK,
perhaps the disk is just faulty - except that after I reinitialise, it
seems to work perfectly under Windows.

So: does Time Machine do something unusual that makes a standard disk
unsuitable?

Does anyone have a recommendation for an external disk that works
reliably with Time Machine? Bear in mind I'm looking for something
affordable - no exotic stuff please!

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Rhapsody no longer plays on Squeezebox Classic

2011-07-25 Thread bklaas

A few weeks ago Rhapsody moved to a higher bitrate SSL certificate,
which broke all existing rhapsody support on ip3k devices. It's fixed,
but requires a firmware update to all ip3k squeezeboxes (SB Classic,
Boom, Receiver, Transporter). You need SBS 7.5.5 or 7.6.0 to have that
firmware pushed to you. If you are connected to mysb.com directly, the
new firmware should get pushed to you automatically. The fix is on the
firmware side, so the device itself needs to update, not just the
server side.

If you're on 7.6.0 and this didn't happen, make sure you are updated to
the latest revision.

cheers,

but afaik it's not as high as Spotify. If you want service competitors

Re: [slim] New Drive - what to do with playlists?

2011-07-25 Thread Fozzy

Indeed a short piece of shell script and you can do it easily. My
library is on a NAS that runs Linux and the playlists are in
/Qmultimedia/Music/playlists so:

cd /Qmultimedia/Music/playlists
for file in *.m3u
do
sed -e 's!/Qmultimedia/!/bigdisk/!' $file $file.new mv
$file.new $file
done

The line beginning with sed is all one line, the next line starts with
the word done. The example above deals with moving the library from
/Qmultimedia to /bigdisk so you'd need to subsitute your own disk names
here.

Re: [slim] Why do you continue to use your Squeezebox ?

2011-07-25 Thread Fozzy

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88916

Question: Why do you continue to use Squeezebox ?

- I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that
  works good ?
- I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost
  too much to switch
- I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to
  something else anytime soon
- I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to
  something else that supports this
- I would consider switching if someone offered something with
  similar functionality
- I have already started to look for something else but haven't found
  anything interesting yet
- I have already started or completed the transition to something
  else

I actually can't remember how long ago I bought the first Squeezebox.

At the time I already had an extensive CD collection and storage was a
problem. I could not easily have the whole collection available near a
CD player and it was too much trouble to dig into storage boxes or even
the loft to find some of the disks.

I wanted something that would enable me to put all the music on a
server and then listen to whatever took my fancy without having to find
the physical CD. I also wanted HiFi quality, not necessarily audiophile
but good enough that I wouldn't be distracted from the music by
noticeable distortion or extreme colouration. I already had some HiFi
separates and speakers so something that would plug into an input on my
existing amp would be ideal.

Someone at work recommended the Squeezebox and the fact that server
would work on my Linux PC was a definite bonus. I bought a SB Classic
(though it wasn't called that at the time) and was very pleased with it
as it fulfilled all my criteria above. The sound quality is certainly
good enough for my ears.

After that I bought some Squeezebox booms, first for my daughter's
bedroom then for our bedroom and the kitchen. I wasn't expecting great
sound quality though I have been surprised how good the frequency
response is. The stereo image is limited but no worse than a normal
boom box which would typically be used in the same location. The
advantage of the SB booms is access to the same library I have already
spent the time ripping and no arguing over who has borrowed the CD.

I have a desk with both a work PC and home PC at it and over four years
ago I bought a HiFi amp and bookshelf speakers so I could listen while I
worked. The home PC sound card output was simply connected to one of
the amp inputs. On one PC upgrade I found the new integrated sound
card would only do 48k sample rate. All other rates were converted in
software and the sound quality was poor. Forcing the use of a better
resampling algorithm only changed poor to borderline I decided to save
some power by transferring the library (and much of my other data) to a
NAS and got another SB classic to hook up to amp on my desk. The sound
quality is much better and while I am working on the work PC I can have
the home PC turned off.

The final development is discovering SqueezeCommander for Android.
This is an excellent application for controlling the squeezeboxes and
something I probably use more than the web interface.

So, to cut a long story short, at each stage I have chosen squeezeboxes
because they do exactly what I want and have at each stage I have been
pleased. I chose satisfaction with the squeezebox system as the reason
I stick with it but of course I do now have a certain investment in the
system.

I did have an issue with a particular wireless router which I have
mentioned elsewhere but changing the router concerned fixed that
problem.

It appears my NAS should should be able to support DNLA players sharing
the same library even before SB server supports this but as yet I have
not had any reason to get one. I don't have a particular interest in
building a video library and in any event we have a satellite PVR
attached to the only TV in the house which can obviously record and
also play BBC iPlayer content and an on-demand TV box too.

Re: [slim] Lightening!

2011-07-25 Thread Fozzy

We had a lightning incident here recently and the damage was fortunately
limited to a pair of DSL/Wireless routers connected to my DSL lines and
the Ethernet port of an Xbox360.

In the case of the wireless routers in at least one case the telephone
line interface was damaged as well as the power adaptor.

It seems the issue in this case was most likely not a high voltage
between the live and neutral wires of the mains but between the mains
wires as a pair and earth (ground). In that case the path to earth is
through the DSL router to the phone line which has one leg grounded and
the damaged parts reflect this.

In the case of a cable line the same route is possible particularly if
the screen of the coax cable is grounded. In this case grounding at
the customers premises probably acts more to protect the cable
company's equipment and that of neighbouring customers that it does to
protect your equipment.

Why use Windows to partition / format?
On the Mac, disk utility will do the same and you can use the Mac OS
Extended format which is recommended.

If you remove the drive from its USB shell and mount it on a computer
via SATA or eSATA you should be able to access its RAID status and see
if there is indeed a problem with the drive.

Other than having the drive work every 15 minutes I don't think TM is
overly stressful.
(My TM volume is an ext2 disk image file loop-mounted in a server,
exported via NFS, reexported as a TM volume by a Linux VM running
Netatalk... And it works nicely.)

If any wire enter your house without being earthed, then all
household appliances (even the furnace) are at risk. That cable
company wire is earthed so that a surge does not enter via their cable.
All telephone wires (not just one) are earthed by a 'whole house'
protector installed for free by the telco. Earthed also to protect all
appliances.

But wires that most often carry surge currents into the house are AC
electric. If you have not earthed all (typ. three) incoming AC electric
wires using a 'whole house' protector, then no effective surge
protection exists.

Dr Standler discusses this in his book Protection of Electronic
Circuits from Overvoltage:
This situation could be resolved by the use of mandatory standards
...
At this time this book was written (1988), the author saw no hope of
such standards being adopted in the United States for overvoltages
on
 the mains.

Assume two buildings are interconnected by an Ethernet cable. And
that cable is not earthed at the service entrance of both buildings.
Then a lightning strike to one building acts like a lightning rod
connected to all computers inside the second building. Damage because
that cable was not properly earthed where it entered each building.
Every wire (all eight inside an Ethernet cable) must connect to earth.

Essentially, the Touch is saying I need to update the server software

It's 100% running from the NAS as it's got my entire MP3 collection on

Is this news?

I really hope this doesn't fail as I'm otherwise bought a £200 white

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-07-25 Thread tpchristian

I am having trouble with the volume control. I am running Android 2.2
on a Viewsonic G-Tablet. If I press the volume hard-keys, the volume
will automatically get turned down right away. Same if I try to
control the volume from a remote.

I have a couple other issues, but I want to reproduce them again before
posting.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-07-25 Thread tpchristian

I see the message in the release notes about experimental syncing
support. I was able to sync my player on windows with SBR by setting
up the sync'ing on the server and playing with the delay. It seems to
stay in sync nicely so far. When I try to do the same for the Android
player, I get get it in sync sometimes, but seems to change if I change
the song. I am very new to SB so I may just not be using a good method
for setting up the sync parms. There are a number of them and maybe I
need to adjust some of the other delay parameters.

I am going to Las Vegas with some buddies next month and we are going to
go to clubbing. I was wondering what type of shoes should I wear to

Sounds great if there's a chance of a fix.
On my Desire S I have the same issue that Pakman00 reported.
 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=627087postcount=212
Original menu items remain stuck on screen while new ones are
 scrolled.
Seems to be present in any scrollable screen (Music Folder, Playlist,
 Settings etc.)

Same exact behavior on my Evo 3D. Scrolling any list results in the
original items remaining there. It makes the app unusable, despite
everything else being pretty solid.

I'd hoped to come here and see that this was a known issue that was to
be fixed soon, but instead it looks like this app is basically dead?
Are there any plans to update this app in the future?

Re: [slim] Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

2011-07-25 Thread garym

results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88915

Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ?

- Its excellent audio quality
- Best price/performance on the market
- Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution
- Great support for online streaming services
- Great support for browsing and playing local music
- The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on
- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new
  features/bugs
- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

Please, when you keep telling the story of your brother over and over,
you should also tell a little more, because normal people won't ever
use the Touch the way he does.
Only mp3, never turn it off nor disconnect the drive, never add one
single file (!!!), which is what you finally stated once after a lot of
questions (I was quite surprised he never had a problem, but with this
informations, it explains a lot ...)

I don't disagree with most of your points. That is, the idea that
logitech needs to work hard to make the squeezebox experience more user
friendly and that their communications with customers are sometimes less
than optional.

I will take exception with your seeming complaint with me telling my
brother's story over and over. Yes, I've used this as an example a
number of times, but certainly many times less than the relentless and
innumerable posts on logitech hardware or software is complete junk
because it doesn't seem to work for anyone, or at least anyone that is
not a computer expert. I simply try to add a counter point that in
fact the system can work well for a non techie user. (And most of my
thousands of posts (wow, I've wasted a lot of time here) are mostly
related to helping people troubleshoot their issues as new users. And
I've learned a lot about how networks work, how DACs work, etc. etc.
Didn't need all this info to use my SB players, but it led me to things
like my vortexbox and its all interesting stuff nonetheless (and a
distraction from my day job).

It's true, my brother is not a power user. But he does have a touch
with music attached, and also a Boom using the music attached to the
Touch. I'd say given this that he may in fact be a more significant
user than the average touch purchaser. But I'm just guessing. And to
clarify, he does once in a while remove the USB drive, connect it to
his laptop, add some mp3 or aac files, then reconnect it to the TOUCH.
I've warned him to let it fully complete the scan (which he interprets
as start it before bedtime and let it run all night no matter what).

And the 85+ year old is probably even a better example. She uses
internet radio (mostly french stations) and once in a while uses some
pandora stations that her son set up for her. Pure access to
mysqueezebox.com and none of her own music. I'm not sure that she's
not the more typical mass market user these days.

I'll mention a 3rd friend that has a duet. She only knows the
controller exists. The receiver is hidden away with an auto-on mini amp
connected to ceiling speakers (all set up by a home stereo installer).
She literally doesn't know where the receiver is even sitting!
(although I did figure it out just for curiosityon top of a kitchen
cabinet out of site) She uses strictly pandora and a few internet
stations, all via mysb.com. She's another example of a user that is
certainly not techie, but uses the system with no issues (for a bit
over a year now). The only thing she's ever mentioned to me is that
once in a while she's had to remove the battery from the controller and
put it back in to make it all reboot.

I don't mention these things to annoy people. I simply believe it is
important to counter the many posts on it's horrible and can't work.
My experience is that it certainly can, and not just for computer
geeks. I see mostly unstable networks and/or bad file tagging as the
predominant problems reported here (rather than broken hardware or
software).

I myself have no professional experience in computer programming,
networks, audio hardware, or anything related to these things. When I
bought my first SB, I didn't understand the difference between
mysqueezebox.com (squeezenetwork at that time) or SbS (squeezecenter).
But I did know how to read (and evaluate cause effect). I now have a
home and a weekend cottage where I have full house SB based systems,
with some wired, some wifi players, including every type of player SB
produces from SB3 onward. I started with SN(SbS) on my winxp laptop,
and now use a vortexbox appliance. And (knock on wood) it is

My friend has some things in her shoes to stop her shoes from getting a

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-07-25 Thread bluegaspode

When you manually start a new song, each player sort of starts at the
same time. They all then need some time to tell each other their
playback position and resync within the next 5 to 30 seconds. If all
players have good timing you won't realize them adjusting all the time
for the rest of the playlist.
Did you wait a little bit for this to happen? Please also for tests
first try only two players (ie SqueezePlayer and Squeezebox) and only
then add others to see who might be the weak link.
