[slim] Is SqueezePlay still under development?

2021-06-27 Thread JJZolx

I get much of the third party stuff and all the little bits of abandoned
Squeeze software mixed up and really haven't been paying much attention
in recent years.

I often use SqueezePlay and LMS to play music on my Windows machines. If
anyone is still developing this, or has an interest in doing so, one
small request I have is an option to minimize the program to the system
tray on Windows, so that it doesn't take up a place on the taskbar, and
would more-or-less run in the background.

Re: [slim] Streaming radio doesn't play on Transporter

2021-06-09 Thread JJZolx

Re-examining this... (I just gave up last year.)

Here is the radio stream I'm trying to play on the Transporter, but get
no audio. It shows about 3 seconds of progress in the web UI, then the
counter resets to 0:00. Maybe someone else could try it?

http://kuvo-ice.streamguys.org/kuvo-aac-128

Web page: 'KUVO 89.3 Denver' (https://www.kuvo.org/ways-to-listen/)

It plays on my SB Radio, apparently natively. On the Transporter I see
this info in the web interface:

File Format: AAC
Bitrate: 128kbps CBR (Converted to 705kbps FLAC)
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
URL: http://kuvo-ice.streamguys.org/kuvo-aac-128

I'm using the stock convert.conf and types.conf files, no changes to the
streaming formats (shown in a previous post). Both faad.exe and flac.exe
are in place and are the versions installed by LMS. I'm running LMS 8.2
beta, built May 30.

[slim] Box Sets - Keep them intact and also break out individual albums?

2020-07-09 Thread JJZolx

I have a three album box set that is comprised of several individually
released albums. I'm sure most of you have seen sets like this. I'm
wondering if I can keep the set intact and playable in its entirety as
"The Complete Sessions", and also have the individual albums show up as
albums in LMS, without duplicating the files. Not playlists, but
albums.

LMS is running under Windows Server 2003 here. Can this be done with
links? Or some other trick?

What are the default settings you have for AAC in Settings > Advanced >
File Types? This is what I have currently. The problem is either here or
(more likely) in my convert.conf.

Code:

  File Format Stream Format Decoder
  AAC AACNative
  FLAC faad/flac
  MP3faad/lame
  PCMfaad

Thanks.

Made no difference.

But I examined the streaming codec of the stations and discovered that
they were all AAC. After trying a number of other streams I found one
streaming in MP3 and that played fine.

I'm thinking I may have been playing around with file type conversions
at some time in the past and munged the AAC conversion. Looks like it's
being transcoded to FLAC, or trying to be. I think I'll figure it out
eventually.

[slim] Streaming radio doesn't play on Transporter

2020-05-25 Thread JJZolx

My main stereo system with a Transporter was down for a while as my
preamp was being repaired. Today I noticed that streaming radio doesn't
play on the Transporter. The only other Squeezebox set up in my house
right now is a Radio, and streaming radio plays fine on it.

I've tried both direct streaming and proxied streaming settings for the
Transporter and neither one plays. On the server, the progress bar
moves, I get feedback like covers and track info. On the Transporter I
see track info, but the VU meters don't show anything playing.

The web interface (HTTP) usually runs on port 9000. If you've changed
that (say, to port 80) then it won't matter to SqueezePlay, as it
doesn't use HTTP.

The -only- way I'd consider port forwarding to LMS through a home
firewall is if it's restricted to a single remote IP address, and you
know that address isn't being shared and it doesn't change. I used to
connect remotely from my office to my home LMS server, and only
forwarded connections from the one public address that my work PC was
tied to.

Re: [slim] Blank screen when turned off

2018-08-16 Thread JJZolx

Here's what I'd do, short of reinstalling everything from scratch
(actually, it should be pretty much the same thing):

- While LMS is running, go the Settings > Information page in the web
  interface.
- Note the players listed on this page and find the MAC Addresses of
the two players. Write them down. You'll need this if you have any
other players or software players on your network.
- Find the folder containing your LMS server configuration - the
"prefs" folder - which contains the server.prefs file. This should be
shown near the bottom of the same Settings > Information page.
- Also, find the folder and the file containing your SuperDateTime
screensaver settings. Should also be a .prefs file.
- Shut down LMS.
- Delete the SuperDateTime .prefs file.
- Open the LMS server.prefs file and completely remove the settings
  sections for both players.
- Restart LMS.
- Reconfigure the players and the SuperDateTime screensaver from
  scratch.

The player settings are listed in server.prefs with headers that look
like (with the MAC addresses of your players):

_client:00:04:20:05:d0:d4:

Delete the header and everything under that header that is indented,
down to the next _client entry, or to the next line that is not
indented.

With CDs you were never really paying for the physical media and
packaging. I recall when CDs first became prevalent, there were claims
that they'd lower the cost of buying albums, but that was never true.
They came out and were actually more expensive than vinyl records.
There's no reason to expect downloads to be much cheaper than CDs.

Does it -need- a firmware update? A Classic would have had to have been
taken out of service many years ago to not have the latest firmware.

If you like, it should be possible to skip the update. I don't recall
all the logic involved, but try going into settings and disable software
updates (Settings > Advanced > Software Updates) and remove the firmware
file from the cache/updates directory on the server. Then restart the

How do you determine that the connection is coming from "outside"? If
someone is doing port forwarding in order to make the LMS server

Are you sure about that number? How fast is your internet connection's
upload speed and how much music data do you currently have? You should
run some tests that last at least a few hours to gauge the true upload
speed. You might also find that Amazon doesn't accept the data at
anywhere near your connection speed.

If Amazon does let you upload at full speed, keep in mind that you don't
want to completely swamp your upstream connection with this upload. Or
you'll most likely find that it creates problems for other uses of the
connection, like watching video, or even just web browsing.

That's only really a consideration while you're originally ripping your
CD library. IMO. After that, most people might buy one CD or a few CDs
each week. Losing the work involved to rip, say, a dozen CDs, because
you only do off-site backups once a month, isn't a giant inconvenience.
And the chances of that happening, because you've lost both your main
library and your on-site backup, should be extremely small.

While you're ripping your library you could manually run your backup to
a local disk daily or even a couple times a day (it wouldn't really need
to be 'manual' - you can easily schedule it to run). The most you'd lose
if your main library was lost is a day's work.

Then, create/update an off-site backup once a month, if that.

Online backups of large media libraries are nice in theory, but in
practice they don't always work very well. It can take days, weeks, even
-months- to backup a large library given internet connection speeds
available to most homes. Then there's the issue of restoring your
library if anything goes wrong, which could again take many days to get
things back.

Squeeze Ctrl works fine with LMS 7.9. It's the only app I've used on

straightforward interface with few surprises.

What actually happens during playback? Do you get noise or nothing at

Is there any possibility that the Odroid just doesn't have the

Hmm... Good question. :)

It's a 24/96 file. I have the Transporter synced with a Radio. If I
unsync the Transporter, it doesn't resample. The Radio should be capable
of 24/96 too, so I'm not sure why it resamples for the combination.

Re: [slim] 24bit 96 khz flac support?

2016-02-08 Thread JJZolx

I'm playing an album in 24/96 on my Transporter right now and it's being
downsampled. If you want to debug it a little you can enable debugging
for conversions from the web interface by going to:

Settings > Advanced > Logging > (player.source) - Player Source Audio &
Conversion Logging

and seetting it to 'Debug'. When I do that, I see this in my log file:

[16-02-08 16:21:45.5661]
Slim::Player::TranscodingHelper::getConvertCommand2 (446) Matched:
flc->flc via: [flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -q -t wav - -t
flac -C 0 $RESAMPLE$ -

This means it's using the Flac program to decode the flac file and then
SoX to re-sample and re-encode. Perhaps those programs aren't installed
on your system?

Re: [slim] The Demise of the Transporter

2015-10-08 Thread JJZolx

To be honest, the Transporter was an inside joke by Sean Adams, who
chuckled under his breath at audiophiles and the little rarefied world
that they live in. He designed a very nice sounding device, and gave it
an arbitrary price tag. ("Hey Tony, how does $1000 sound? That's
expensive, right?" "Nah, why don't you make it $2000?" "Sure. What the
hell.")

Transporter was never where Logitech wanted to take the product line.
They were hoping for something more mainstream, but could never quite
make that happen financially. If they could have sold a device for $99,
then Squeezebox might still be alive. Unfortunately, they inherited
(bought, actually) an ecosystem that was extremely expensive to
maintain, and way more rickety than they'd hoped.

Forensically, their problem was that they hired a lot guys who
understood the hardware, audio and networking sides of things, but they
pretty thoroughly fucked up the data modeling and (to a lesser extent)
the user interface. If Logitech had immediately made the decision to
port the software to a native Windows application and knocked out a
device for $99, I guarantee the Squeezebox would still be alive today.

It does that when you add any player. Always has. Unless you're talking

Unstable, how? Unable to maintain sync, or do you get dropouts? If it's
dropouts, then it's a problem with your wireless network, not whatever

Once in sync, do you notice these skips? I never have. If you are, it

It may be that the "control app" is used mostly for setup. With no
native user interface, this would pretty much be a requirement in a
commercial product.

Looks promising. Essentially functions like a Receiver, but with no
status indicator light. Like the Receiver, there's no display and no
native user interface. The motherboard certainly looks very simple.
Probably also capable of running LMS, especially with its USB ports. Did
anyone see specs on the computer at the core of the device? CPU, RAM

I believe the one above is just a larger version of the style that came

one shown below and it -is- a little perplexing. Basically, the top
slides forward. If you hold the remote flat in your hand, slide the top

I imagine there's a fair amount of tooling for producing the Radio,
Boombox and Touch cases, schematics for boards, etc.

As to whether or not anyone could make a go of it with Squeezebox as a
retail project (we've been over this a hundred different ways), the
chances are slim to none. Unfortunately, the software is both the
Squeezebox's strength and its Achille's heel. Its support costs are
astronomical and sink any chance of profit unless the price were raised
substantially.

Just about the only way I could see it becoming a practical retail
product would be if you produced the server hardware and completely
dropped any notion of running the software on umpteen releases of
Windows and Mac OS X and random distros of Linux. That server hardware
could be a standalone non-playing server, or it might be a server
running on a Squeezebox player, ala Sonos and TinySBS on the Touch. I
don't know how reasonable either would be, as I see both being fairly
expensive propositions that would take the Squeezebox system into new
territory price-wise and therefore market-wise. Not many people want a
$400 Radio or a $500 entry-level Squeezebox.

Depends on exactly what you're trying to do and how you intend to do it.
Are the five Touches going to be located in the central location, or
each one in each room? Seems to me that you'd want them in the rooms
unless you plan on only controlling them remotely.

(If I were going to locate them centrally, where the display can't be
viewed and the touchscreen can't be used, I would use something like the
Raspberry Pi instead of the Touch, for probably less than 1/4th the
cost.)

If the Touches were located in the rooms, wiring with a central
amplifier (lets say it's in the basement) might be a little awkward, as
the signal would have to run from the room (the Touch) down to the
basement amplifier, then back up to the room's speakers. In that setup,
an amp in the room would make more sense. It might also alleviate the
need for a separate volume control in the room.

Why even post if you don't want to take ten minutes trying to figure out
the problem? Try it without the DAC to see if the DAC _is_ the source of
the issue. Nobody is suggesting you get rid of the DAC or leave it
bypassed. If it's not the DAC, then you still have the problem and you
can look elsewhere. If you don't actually care enough to put any effort
into troubleshooting, then you should never have started this thread to
begin with.

I'm not nagging anyone. I'd just like to think that the idea of a
community Squeezebox player is still possible. And if not, I'd like to
know why not. Speculative or not.

I don't give a damn if the guy with the supposed legal issues never

More assumptions and speculation, just like those voiced by the previous

How can you know "the important lesson" unless you know the issues that

Agreed. Please try without the external DAC. You may be running into the

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 2015 - Is the Squeezebox Universe Expanding of Shrinking?

2015-02-09 Thread JJZolx

Other than possibly the Radio, the Squeezebox players were all too
pricey to gain much of a foothold in the market of consumers who were
interested in only music streaming services. If the SB were introduced
today, it would flop even worse due to all of the competition in the
market.

In fact, a focus on streaming services may be the very reason the SB
flopped. Logitech seemed to spend an inordinate amount of development
time and money supporting every little streaming service that popped up.
It appeared to be marketing's main focus as well.

Getting XP installed on _any_ modern hardware will fall somewhere
between a major headache and impossible. More likely the latter. They
stopped writing XP drivers for hardware years ago. Most chipsets and
peripherals produced in the last five years or so have no XP drivers.

If you really think it's the motherboard, I would seriously look into
replacing it with the exact model, or at least one that will accept your
CPU and RAM.

You should be able to rip CDs easily enough on a laptop. Even if there's

Yes, that's exactly where I was going. What is the motherboard and CPU
that you currently have? I think your best bet to do it inexpensively
would be to find a used motherboard of the same model for sale on ebay
or similar. Otherwise, you may have to replace the CPU and the memory,
maybe the video card, and possibly even the power supply as well.

Searching 'Newegg' (http://newegg.com), there are four Intel CPU based
motherboards that have IDE (PATA) ports onboard. Only one has two IDE
ports, so the rest would only support two IDE devices.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory=280&N=17627%20600029944%20600029945&IsNodeId=1&IsPowerSearch=1

And five AMD based boards.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory=22&N=17625%20600029948&IsNodeId=1&IsPowerSearch=1

I think they all have at least one PCI slot as well.

I doubt that any retailers would allow you to return a CD if you claimed
you "couldn't rip it". You could try claiming that it would play and
seeing if they'll exchange it for another copy. Few, if any, places will

I would assume the USB storage isn't usable from the Squeezebox player
software that they have installed, only from their standard player
software. As you say, that would also require the internal computer to
be running LMS.

This is the only mention of LMS from the BDP-2 manual. It may be that
Squeezelite was added only as a stopgap for people buying their $3000
device only to find that it can't even stream Internet radio.

For Bryston, installing Squeezelite, which they didn't pay a penny to
develop, on the BDP-2, with its bog-standard motherboard running Linux,
is a pretty low risk proposition. They didn't develop the system to be a
Squeezebox emulator; it's an afterthought. It may generate a few
additional support calls from their clientele, but they're charging
$3000 for the thing, which doesn't even contain a DAC, so they can
afford the support.
