Re: [slim] Smart people will stay with Squeezebox
Catching up on the thread. Lots of words resonate with my own feelings (apart from those entering into OS wars :p ) I remember the experience of opening the packaging of my first Squeezebox 3 the attention to detail was obvious all the way through the product. I can safely say it reignited my love of music. All those CDs stuck in a corner gathering dust now ripped to a server and available to play in high quality; jumping from song to song as memories were awakened, not something you'd do with a CD player. Maybe one of the things overlooked in the comments is the visual detail of the Squeezeboxes especially the VFD in the SB3. It exuded quality and matched the attention and choice of the audio DAC. I still think the SB3 was the best player for visual looks the simplicity and beauty of the VFD was lost with the Radio and Touch. The alternatives suggested in the thread so far have not suggested a player that matches the SB3 in terms of audio AND visual quality. I wonder what Adam and Dean would come up with today? Re: [slim] Boom or Radio
I have both a Boom and a Radio. The Boom acts as a bedside alarm clock and the Radio is in the kitchen. Given the choice again I'd opt for a Radio for the following reasons: - Seems to have better wifi reception. I've used it in the garden and not had buffer issues whereas the Boom often seems to drop out - Adding a battery to the Radio makes a good product into an awesome product, as I said I can quite happily use it in the garden and the bttery easily last for several hours - Easily portable so you can take it wherever you want whilst the Boom always needs to be close to a power socket and will have to boot up on connection The pros for the Boom are: - Slightly better sound quality from the two speakers - More options available through Squeezebox server - Prefer the VFD display HTH Paul -- Paul_B Paul Slimcentre 7.2 on Quad Intel MSI MoBo running Vista Ultimate 64bit controlled via a Mini-ITX server running Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) and Idratek Cortex home-automation software. Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store
Not posted a comment about iPeng yet, took ages to read this entire thread! Wonder if it is time to lock the thread and start a new one with a FAQ / Limitations of 1.0 / Known bugs / Roadmap as a starting message? Anyway just to say what so many others have said and that is awesome piece of software. I can't believe you have turned this around so quickly! I have followed iPeng development on and off since the beginning. I used the web based skin a few times but felt it was a bit gimmicky rather than for every day use. The performance got better over time as did the interface, but it was never quite responsive enough for me. I installed the iPeng Native app from App Store as soon as I realised it was avaialble. What can I say it is just fantastic. It is my main controller now for my SB3 and SBB. In the past my controller was a laptop and the web interace to SC but not anymore. In addition it has demonstrated just how capable the iPhone / Touch can be with the right software (just a pity Apple are so restritive on so many things!). I'm now looking at another product to control my home automation system. So many thanks Pippin for an excellent product and I have no hesitation in recommending the purchase of iPeng -- Paul_B Paul Slimcentre 7.2 on Quad Intel MSI MoBo running Vista Ultimate 64bit controlled via a Mini-ITX server running Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) and Idratek Cortex home-automation software. Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here
I'll chip in my thoughts on the announcement. The controller looks nice but I can't help thinking an iPod Touch would be more useful and have greater capability for an existing SB3 owner. The current iPeng interface that Pippin is developing is excellent and makes user of the larger screen from iPod Touch / iPhone. My only critiscm is the interface is a bit slow but I am sure this will improve especially when Apple actually release an SDK. However, one thing I did note on the spec sheet was the 3-axis accelerometer now that sounds interesting. Maybe we'll see Wii style control? For me there are three main things about the SB3 that justify the cost: 1 - Sound quality; a FLAC CD from my NAS is exactly the same quality on my stero as playing the CD mid-priced Hi-Fi CD player. 2 - The accessibility of my music; not just being lazy and getting a CD out the drawer but hearing one tune and thinking of another then finding it instantly on the SqueezeCenter rather than emptying every CD to find it. 3 - The VFD Display; even when I am not listening to music the SB3 has a beautiful display which is very clear (even with my eye-site) and I can display time, weather ot integrate it into my HA system -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimcentre 7.0A1 on EPIA VIA EN15000 Mini-ITX running Windows 2003 R2 (SP2). I am not really sure what Microsoft are upto with WHS. The current version is built on Windows 2003 Server which is almost at the end of its life. Re: [slim] Quality of Slimserver
CliveB, I have a very similar setup to you using a Via MoBo and it consumes just 25W (measured from a plug-in Watt-Meter). My machine is a Via EN 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM and 1 SATA HDD. The machine does more than just run Slimserver (which it does pretty well). It also runs Exchange 2003, SQL 2005, IIS 6.0, WINS, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, Home-Automation software, Print Server all on Windows 2003 Server. It doesn't really struggle for the basic stuff I am throwing at it but it does serve the entire house. Must confess I have never timed a full re-scan but then I only do that very infrequently and usually just before going to bed. So I think it is possible to run Slimserver on a low power consuming machine. In my experience memory is critical to SS rather than raw processing power. Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?
The problem with NAS devices is they just aren't. Conceptually the NAS boxes such as QNAP were originally specced for serving files to a network. But more and more has been added to them in the form of bit torrent, web server, Slimserver, etc. They are no longer true NAS but a central server. As a server they are under powered and this is especailly true since the release of Slimserver 6.5 and using the web interface. Add to this the inadequacies of Wi-Fi and it is not a pleasant experience. I discovered this myself and is the reason I went down the Mini-ITX route and built a central server. I find it much more flexible to my needs because I can just download and install the latest version of Slimserver or Plugin. This machine is not that powerful. It is 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM but it also acts as my print server, WINS, DNS, DHCP, Web-server, Home-automation server, file server, and Slimserver. It never complains and sits in the garage headless and consumes just 25W. Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?
This is an interesting discussion. For Slim to penetrate the mass market then they are either going to have to create a server solution to run Slimserver or the SB4 is going to be a fatter client to offload the server. From my own experience the SB3 is fantastic and changed the way I listen to music. I am so glad the SB3 supports lossless formats and is aimed at good audio reproduction. Playing MP3 at 128K through a decent audio hi-fi setup is nonsense. My system is wired and I have moved away from a NAS solution to dedicated server. Howver the server is a Mini-ITX solution which I put together for less than £400 and it consumes just just 25W. By NAS is now purely a NAS device. I believe streaming shows up the inadequacies of WiFi and this is not the fault of Slim. If your can't run dedicated Cat5 then why not look at using your power circuit and use the numerous Powerline devices on the market? -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimserver 6.5.1 on EPIA VIA EN15000 Mini-ITX running Windows 2003 R2. My initial point is getting lost: Electricity is an inefficient method of generating heat. Better to turn off devices and use fossil fuels, bio-fuels for heating. The point about Nuclear power and Hydro-electric being completely clean is incorrect when you consider the embodied energy in construction and decommisioing. In reference to Karma's post about heating. Electricity is a very inefficient form of heating. A fossile fuel power station is at best 35% efficient, then take into account power line losses and inefficiencies in the transformer. Most electricity isn't nuclear, most power is fossil fuel. Also worth considering is the embodied energy in a nuclear power station. How much CO2 is release in the construction of the nuclear power station and how much CO2 is released during the decommisioning of a nuclear power station? [slim] Re: Getting rid of slimserver
Peter, The home server is probably the next big thing in computing for Joe public. As homes become more digital it makes sense to have a central controller and repository. I started off with a NAS device with Slimserver bundled into it. It changed the way I listened to music and I suffer now loss in quality through playing it through a Squeezebox. I became so dependent on this setup I had to make it more flexible for me (my personal approach may not suit everyone). Now I have a central server for the house running on a Mini-ITX server running Windows 2003 Server. It also runs Slimserver. My data is on the NAS device which also acts as my print server. For me this is fantastic and is flexible to my needs. The operation of Ripping and tagging is a one-off, the CD arrives, it is ripped, tagged, packed away. The music is then available to everyone in the house through a PC or the SB3 in the lounge and just the remote. I can add plugins like Slimscrobbler, Biography, Album Review, xAP interface to stream news headlines and TV reminders. For me this is a wonderful setup and Slimserver is great. I know I like many in the forums are ahead of the crowd. I don't want Slimserver to be less flexible or dumbed down. Maybe someone could write a wizard for the less experienced user to use standard ripper, tagger and play options as Slimserver as the backend -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimserver 6.5.1 on EPIA VIA EN15000 Mini-ITX running Windows 2003 R2. Nauticus, My NAS is a 300GB hard drive (QNAP TS-101) that holds all my data including my music CDs ripped as Flac. It is connected into my home network through CAT5 cable to a Netgear wireless bridge. The Mini-ITX server is a VIA EN 1.5GHz, 1GB RAM box running Windows 2003 (it could be any OS and Linux would be a free choice if I wasn't experimenting for work). The Mini-ITX server runs Slimserver (although the QNAP could run Slimserver as well I just wanted more control). The beauty of NAS and Mini-ITX is they are very quiet and draw very little power. The server draws 25W and the NAS is probably around the same. Disks spin down when not in use and no monitor is needed. Agree with Peter go with a VPN it possible. If not then limit the source address range that you are opening the port to on your firewall. You can always look at your firewall log to see what IP address you came in on at what time. As for buffer overflows it seems to be the easiest method to find an exploit. I have seen security guys pass a string of characters that are unique. The oveflowing buffer then passes on the remainder of the string and so you can work out at what point the buffer oveflows. Also web servers may have exploits that allow foreseen access; in the old days you could navigate a computer hosting Windows IIS4 by passing directory commands in http and as most installs were in the default c:\inetsrv you could do what you liked -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimserver 6.5.1 on EPIA VIA EN15000 Mini-ITX running Windows 2003 R2. I don't think Slimserver is bad, in fact I think it is quite amazing in what it does and the number of formats it supports. Bklaas, Is the Ajax style included in the 6.5.1 nightly release or only in the 7.0 trunk? As for Moose I was trying to illustrate it isn't necessarily all of Slimserver with poor performance. As for cross-platform compatibility well it is good to have. But then to some extent is code designed to take advantage of specific OS calls for performance. I am not getting into a Linux over Mac over Windows as I have made my career on Windows (although have supported Macs in the past as well). Linux seems to have made its mark as well look at all the NAS devices. I can't add value in the programming language as I only script in VB or sometimes Java. However, if you map to public first it is likely that it will connect with guest / anonymous access. If so you will disconnect first before reconnecting with credentials -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimserver 6.3.1 on QNAP(1.2)~(160GB Maxtor) SB3 (x1) RIP - dBpowerAMP R12 (Alpha) to FLAC ID3 Tags - MP3Tag v2.36 Artwork - Album Cover Art Downloader v1.6.0 ~ Paul_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20393 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I also do a few steps to get the music the way I want. From Laptop (WIntel): - Rip CD with dbPowerAmp to FLAC Lossless format straight to my Music share on my NAS (QNAP) device - Edit, clean, download additional info and download cover-art for tags using MP3Tag. I like to use Discogs for Dance Orientated Music and AllMusic for Classical and most otherstuff, if neither have the CD info then I use Amazon. - Get Slimserver to do a re-scan - Ready to listen to the music and check tagging in Last.fm -- Paul_B Paul ~ Slimserver 6.3.1 on QNAP(1.2)~(160GB Maxtor) SB3 (x1) RIP - dBpowerAMP R12 (Alpha) to FLAC ID3 Tags - MP3Tag v2.36 Artwork - Album Cover Art Downloader v1.6.0 ~ Paul_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26804 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

(while ripping) Edit CUE sheet to reference .flac files instead of .wav. What is the purpose of a CUE sheet? Add Artistsort tag Add Albumsort tag Add Disc tag (multidisk albums only) Add Discc tag (multidisk albums only) Add Albumartist=Various Artists (compilations only) Can you explain (for the thickies) what is the purpose of the above Tags, where they are used what effect they have? Jim, Thanks for the explanation. I can see setting a compilation attribute as a good idea as well as disc and number of discs. The problem with the MP3 poll is the majority of people listen to music on stereos, walkmen, etc. Even the home hi-fi system is likely to be anything but. For goodness sake why do most people just look for the highest wattage speakers without taken into account, peak, RMS, or THD. I remeber the first time I listened to Oasis Definately Maybe on a quality stereo and it sounded awful.
