Yes, I think I'm with you. Though I think you are overlooking one important aspect the Squeezebox-brand [had...]. Namely a unique status as a high-fidelity, high-quality, feature rich (almost complete), very reasonably priced streaming solution. Even with todays plethora of offerings, the competition isn't quite there yet. Some such as Naim, Linn and the big high-fi names are much more expensive, mainstream high-fi is not there yet as far as features and quality, Sonos is still low-res, etc. Squeezebox have (had) its foot solidly planted in the music/tech/high-fi communities - people where using Touches as sources in major $$$ systems and *everyone* agreed that they where that good - or one would at least, as the saying goes in high-fi, have to spend major $$$ to achieve better. The Boom/Radio where, for many, nice system-completing additions for streaming to the toilet and such places. As I said I dont think any other brand had such a good standing. iTunes Match supports ALAC. Airplay is LAN-only (for all intents and purposes) All Apple devices (Macs/iDevice/Apple TV/AE) all have digital outs (in some form). Re: [slim] How does Apple AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality?
As far as Apple TV vs. SB goes, here are some personal specifics, divided into stuff one is good at and the other one not, and vice versa. Pro AE: - Fits perfectly into an Apple ecosystem including their cloud-services. - Streaming all kinds of sounds, videos and pictures from all kinds of Apple devices, is a breeze. This is important since most video- and music-services have apps or clients for said devices. This in addition to all other more random youtube, etc. content, one can pull of the big net. - Best-effort-kind-of-good SQ by using digital outputs into DACs etc (though opinions vary as to whether its bit perfect). This means that I think the quality is pretty good - wether or not its actually The Best Possible, is not that important - nor is it optimised with this in mind. - The way I use and think of it is, as as a means of getting a better viewing/listening experience than on the smaller device. Pro SB: - Bitperfect - High-res - WAN-streaming (without cloud-subscritions) - I can 100% manage my own library the old fashion way - no cloud stuff etc. - When up and running - its independent of computers/iDevices/etc. Its just good old high-fi with a thingy that happens to source over the network. So I use both as I believe they (in the present state) serve the same, but different purposes :) bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96726 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

garym: glad to see I'm not alone - at least in this thread. Lyrics is among my most used features - I've used it prior to the 2.0 upgrade, which makes it orders of magnitudes more useful. I'd claim its one of the few features which are truly new and only possible to implement in apps such as iPeng - most everything else is little more than cooking another bowl of soup off old bones. Yeah - not saying the lyrics nor the implementation is impossible to improve - its just so much better than it ever was. pippin has explained why the former is hard and for the latter I can see a point in that folks playing e.g. mostly instrumental music [classical etc] wouldn't have any use of it. What are the walls and ceiling made of? Even though you've covered the 80% of the floor, the rooms seems rather naked - a lot of hard surfaces. Try locating where the echoing is worst - clap hands and move about and install damping accordingly. If thats not enough, you have a good ceiling height, so it should be possible to install absorbers in the ceiling. Consider that you're lucky with no/little bass problems. So if I would mention companies that have the biggest potential to take over the market, Apple would be pretty high on that list, they would be in the top. Reason being that they have it all: - They have the backend music store - They are focused at usability and ease to use - They are able to produce high quality hardware in high quantities - They are inventive They will of course not manage to keep their high momentum in the long run, but if we look for the next 5 year period I honestly can't mention anyone else that looks more promising. However, things are likely going to change over time, we just don't know in what direction it will move and which company that will lead the change. I don't disagree as such, but I do not find it hard to argue against either. For the first two points - take e.g. Spotify. They deliver content and accompanying software for most platforms - and its easy to use. Right, they do not have a own hardware. But then there is Android. The number of Android based phones and tablets is growing and non-negligeble. And of course Windows 8-based units (due in 1/2 yrs) - if you believe Microsoft can ever do a comeback, this would be another threat. So I certainly don't mean Apple disappearing, but that there is room, and a likelihood, that the field will have other players, also in the next 5-yr period. In the longer run - who knows... Some (I think Arcam, Electroncompagninet, Audiolab), are selling DACs with a wireless interface to the computer sound-driver. Personally I hope this (at the moment specialized market/feature) will drive the development of a server/client architecture for sound-systems at the OS level. Kind of like Airplay at the OS level. Re: [slim] Active battery powered speakers?
Hi all, thanks for all the answers. I've decided on one of the suggestions - the Altec Lansing Orbit. I'm reasonably satisfied. Its very portable - slightly bigger than what will fit in a normal-sized pocket. It runs on three AAA-batteries. Soundwise, its much better than the iPhone's builtin speaker and a bit better than an average laptop - in terms of quality as well as loudness. No special apple-dock, but connects via mini-jack. I did also listen to another similar speaker: http://www.retrevo.com/s/Cygnett-CY-3-BBR-Speakers-review-manual/id/23495dj082/t/1-2/ Its slightly smaller than the Orbit - it fits in a pocket (kind of). Uses a builtin non-replacable battery which is charged via a USB-connector. Sound is similar to the Orbit, but a bit brighter. At max-volume it sounds a bit better than the Orbit. Perhaps because it doesn't try to put out quite the same amount of bass as the Orbit - which on the other hand, at high volumes becomes extremely distorted in the bass. Anyway. I'm ready for the road :) -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80252 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Full/better support for WAN streaming, in particular to mobile devices. Seriously, this is going to make life so much easier for me and many others, and its getting more and more feasible for each passing day. Its doable now by various workarounds, hacks, and such. But imagine a fully Squeeze-integrated, plug'n play solution giving access to ones entire library on the go. :):) Full support for WAN streaming to Squeeze*-devices is almost there, but a few improvements are needed security-wise. In particular encrypted authentication. Mobile devices, which is really the main point, is more difficult. Firstly, what devices to support. One alternative is to make their own 3G enabled version of the Controller. This probably is too complicated, as it would likely require data-plans, and what not. The second choice would be to develop clients for a few wisely chosen clients. [slim] Sonos is better than Squeezebox in Denmark...
Hi, The Danish national radio and television network, DR, just featured a review/comparison of Sonos vs. Squeezebox in their gadget-review program So Ein Ding. In conclusion the Squeezebox got 4 stars and Sonos 5 (out of max. 6). As for the Squeezeboxe's, he featured the Duet, Radio, and Boom. Basically the main objections towards Squeezebox was: - Multiroom functionality was deemed unconditionally cumbersome using the Controller. He did mention that iPeng improved on this, but also remarked that it is a 3rd party app. Apparently he did have some issues with synch drifting. - Setup, while not overly diffecult, still more so than with Sonos. - User interface, e.g. Controller, is fiddly. - Mysqueezebox.com/Squeezeboxserver - The combination of multiple sources and the point made on how multiple devices are used made him conclude that this entire X * Y number of combinations is cumbersome. - Lots of bloat: Too many settings, facebook, etc. Sonos was mainly critisised on two points: - No podcast streaming. - Price. Bear in mind this was a show on the national network, which means one can only assume where little technical knowledge on the audience. I must say I agree with him though. Its kind of a shame because the nationally broadcasted show is quite popular and will probably mean that Squeezebox will remain viewed upon as the choice for nerds who enjoy technology for the sake of technology, and Sonos for those who just want a streamer that works out of the box. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75341 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Its just that when there are only two contestants, there is no such thing as a (good) second place - winner and looser. [slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) distorts on max. vol.
Hi, my SB3 has recently started to distort really bad when the volume is turned high up. I have NO idea why. Here are the relevant facts (that I can think of): -No transcoding, crossfading etc. -Distortion occurs on flac and mp3. -Duet and TP on same network does not do this. -Started to occur recently. -Speakers/amp sounds fine if SB3 volume is at e.g. 70 and I turn up the amp I tried recording the distortion on my internal laptop mic. Not good. But I uploaded it anyway. The first 15 sec. showcases the distortion, the last part, how it should sound. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/110443/Lydoptagelse%203.mp3 Advice highly appreciated. So 7.5 embedded aka. TinySC will not support SLIMp3 nor SB1. The wiki-page says that 7.5 embedded will eventually be merged with the mainline code. Does that imply that SLIMp3/SB1 support will be dropped as of that version? -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74847 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

aubuti: Indeed, and I somewhat agree with you in that there, for all practical intents and purposes, currently are several market-segments for these things. However at the end of the day I don't think they are that different. I'm a computer scientist, and I do have a server doing various things. But I must admit that I would happily bin it if I could get the job done by plug'n play devices. Though this is not going to happen tomorrow, there is no reason it can/will not become reality in the forseeable future. Of course, this excludes the segment of those that likes tinkering for the sake of tinkering. But there are plenty offerings for those already. IMO. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74510 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Transporter Vs Naim DAC with Duet
ASenna04;508855 Wrote: Thanks all for your comments. So if I do go the Naim DAC route (seems likely), then I might replace the duet with the Touch. You value sound-quality, hence choose the alternative with the best (for you) price/performance ratio, the Touch. That't not complicated :) Or if you want the very best from the two worlds, keep your TP as a digital source if funds allow. Both makes much sense to me. There is another aspect which seems to escape many. As you said, many seem to be of the opinion that the CDX2-2 is a better sounding transport than say a CD5XS. Fine. Suppose you accept that. Its at a truly high cost, but still... At the same time many (the same?) including Naim officially I think, argue that the HDX sounds better because it provides better data reading (rips) as it doesn't have to be done under the same almost-realtime restrictions as a cd-transport. For all intents and purposes I don't think the HDX does much else than EAC or dpPoweramp. Hence by using the Squeezebox as a transport you would get better source material to start with. Whether this would make up for whatever the CDX2-2 could improve on the transport side I have no idea, but this must be accounted for if you want to follow these arguments. Anyway, we need to try for ourselves I think. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74249 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Transporter Vs Naim DAC with Duet
ASenna04;508451 Wrote: bhaagensen, You make important points here. If the DAC does indeed render all reasonable quality digital sources equal, then why would Naim market to sell it with the new CDX2-2 (with S/PDIF) when a CD5XS would be sufficient? ASenna04 Just because its there doesn't mean it must be used cf. eg. RCA connectors on most new Naim gear. It could simply be a measure towards interoperatibiliby in general. But I agree its a good question. As for your original question I'm fairly sure you would prefer the DAC over the TP, all else being equal. The Naim sound is distinctively lively (or musical or whatever one prefers to call it) compared to the rather neutral TP. Hence the DAC is likely to provide better system synergy - or in plain words, a more complete Naim-sound. This was thoroughly confirmed for me when I tested the TP and the CD5x. Mind you, I also think that at this level, we are talking in subtle differences where the end-result depends equally much on caring for details all the way through the replay chain including room accoustics. But you knew that :) -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74249 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Transporter Vs Naim DAC with Duet
I agree. As for my reference to the listening test of the TP versus the Naim CD5x I am not implying the latter is superior by any notion of absolute measure. I should also emphasise that I suspect the Naim DAC is better than the TP in the context of a Naim system, in case it was not clear. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74249 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Transporter Vs Naim DAC with Duet
Is it called reclocking? The idea used by Naim is really simple and elegant - the only downside being that it doesn't really warrant a fancy naim :) Buffering in a 'time-independet' way, really describes well all they are doing. Anyway. Its up to everyone to trust in what is written or not, but the whitepaper quite well describes the design of the DAC. Personally I find it highly unlikely that Naim would publish a whitepaper in the name of the designers with false claims regarding the technical implementations used in the DAC. As for the OP's question I have not yet heard the DAC. I will do so in a bit more than one weeks time. Though this time not directly against the TP. I did however very recently have a chance to compare the TP directly against a CD5x. I wrote a longish report on a Danish forum, but the short story is that the TP does not quite cut it against a CD5x. Initial reports regarding the merits of the DAC relative to Naim's own line of cd-players may at this time be influenced by initial excitement, but still I expect the DAC to perform at least as well as a CD5x - whence the answer to your question follows... -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74249 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
