Re: [slim] Sonos-Google lawsuit

2022-01-10 Thread freelsjd

As many of you have mentioned, I am also not familiar with the details
of this case, just that I read articles on the web about it. It sounds
like from the discussion here that it probably is more about HOW the
synchronization was done as opposed to the mere fact that
synchronization took place.

I have a pair of Google nest mini speakers that are setup to not only
synchronize, but play in stereo using the home app on an android phone.
This requires the two speakers to be exactly the same in order to
function. Once setup, and using the castbridge plugin in LMS, the
stereo sound is obviously present by selecting the right previously
setup pair of speakers. It is nice to play audio through my LMS and
into these two speakers at my desktop. It sounds like this could go
away with the impact of this lawsuit.

Just wonder how far reaching this could actually go.

[slim] Sonos-Google lawsuit

2022-01-09 Thread freelsjd

Anyone else in this forum also see the news that Sonos has successfully
sued Google for patent infringement. It was over several things, but
mostly about how Google can pair up speakers and send music through
speakers wirelessly.

I couldn't help but think that Slimdevices and later Logitech had this
technology going well before Sonos. Yet, LMS plays well with Google
devices and I like being able to cast sound to various devices; even in
stereo now.

Sure wish Logitech had stayed with this product. I am very glad that
LMS is open source, and so grateful for those who contribute to keeping
it going.

Re: [slim] https connection to LMS ?

2021-12-12 Thread freelsjd

Apparently, with newer version of chrome, it must remember the response
to the conflict (which is to go insecurely and override the need for
https), because it is now not stopping but running as it should. Since
I am behind my router, and within my lan, this should not be a security
issue.

I also found a LMS front-end that looked interesting and is designed
just for this problem here:
https://hub.docker.com/r/jgoerzen/logitech-media-server. I was thinking
about trying this. Has anyone here tried this ?

At least I now understand why LMS remains using http since the hardware
(in my case a squeezebox-2) requires it. Once again constrained by the
abandonment of the product by Logitech after purchasing from slimserver
leaving the customer base. I like the logitech mice, but disdain what
they did here. They could update the firmware to fix.

[slim] https connection to LMS ?

2021-12-11 Thread freelsjd

I apologize up front if this is a FAQ, but I could not seem to find it
if it is.

The newer versions of Google Chrome are essentially requiring https in
order to work. At the very least, I have to force it to use http; even
over the LAN to my favorite LMS (http://localhost:9000/).

Is there any way to setup LMS to use https ? If so, where can I find
the howto ? If not, any plans to do so ?

I am using LMS 8.3.0~1639114576 on my Linux/Debian/Bullseye/11.1
server.

Thanks

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Alternatives

I discovered recently that Philippe's castbridge plugin services
correctly two identical cast speakers that are setup with the google
home app to be a "speaker pair". I found this to produce perfectly
synced stereo LMS output using this plugin. The better quality your
speakers are, the better your sound will be; i.e., if you play through
two paired google mini speakers, it will not be nearly the total sound
you get from a google hub or max.

Re: [slim] Pandora now in 192kbps!

2020-06-04 Thread freelsjd

So, I reinstalled the pandora plugin (that is required), and also made
sure that the current pandora password for my pandora account is entered
in the pandora my apps on mysqueezebox, and it works and runs pandora at
192 kbps. Probably one of the main reasons I dropped it before was the
limit of 128 kbps before, although nowadays the norm is probably 320
kbps. Guess Pandora will always be one step behind ? Anyway, my
question: with respect to LMS, there appears to be no difference
between the basic free account and the non-free accounts plus and
premium. I realize, I can do all these things on the Pandora web
interface, but with respect to the LMS interface, I can just create and
play radio stations whether free or paid, correct ?

Michael, thanks for the heads up and any and all efforts to get Pandora
to 192 kbps. I am debating to try the plus account for a while which is
reasonable at $5/mo. Maybe use to try new albums out.

[slim] praise

2019-08-18 Thread freelsjd

I just want to state in this forum, that the logitech media server
(formally slimserver), and the squeezebox player, continues to be the
best music player and music file organizer available. Even after all
these years, and new products from many companies and developers, it is
the best. Plex is certainly good and includes many other formats of
media besides music, but for simply music, LMS is the best. It is fast,
versatile, etc. I continue to not understand why Logitech could not
embrace this technology/product, even now. The only blunder I have seen
worse is why Sears would fail in the internet world with a catalog as
large as they had. Enough of my rant. Good day.

Re: [slim] Would love advice on how to diagnose Tidal buffering

2019-07-25 Thread freelsjd

At the risk of diverting from the direct topic, I will put in my 2
cents. I have been using Tidal on the LMS and happy with it, albeit, at
the mid bit rates (not the flac or master rates, and not the lower
rates). Now if I play Tidal through my Android phone, in order to
prevent the player from skipping, I have to run at the lower bit rates.
I noticed it first through my automobile using Android Auto, but then
tested on other speaker systems by bluetooth or USB, and it is
consistently skipping at mid rates or higher when played through my
phone. I have been with tech support at Tidal and they have
acknowledged the problem. Perhaps the only device that can be used to
justify the higher bit rates with Tidal are the players such as LMS,
Sonos, etc., that have enough compute power to process the higher bit
rates. Certainly, I cannot justify the cost in playing on my phone.
BTW, my phone is a good one, so should be able to process with no
problem (LG G7 ThinQ), so I believe it is an issue with the Tidal
servers.

Re: [slim] Linux

2019-02-11 Thread freelsjd

Microsoft now offers through their "store" free linux installations
within Windows itself as an app. Ubuntu came first, but there are
several others now. Basically a bash environment. I have no idea how
good the graphical interface will work for this type of setup, but you
do not need that to run the LMS.

I have a VM setup within my debian/linux server to run Windows 10 that
uses vmplayer from vmware. This allows me to run Windows-specific
software that is not available for linux such as quicken, office (excel,
word, powerpoint, etc.). This way you get the best of both worlds.

Re: [slim] Linux

2019-02-03 Thread freelsjd

I have been using linux since 1994 when Win-95 was released and I was
sick of the blue screen of death from Win-3.1. Never looked back. For
beginners, I recommend Mint or Ubuntu-LTS distribution, but I use
Debian. Lots of choices with Linux, so if you want it to look like
Windows-7 go ahead. I recommend that you dual boot for a while until
you become comfortable using linux. Since you have stuck with Windows-7
all these years, you may not be comfortable using linux. Another
suggestion is to just unplug your Windows-7 from the network, and not
worry about updates from Microsoft and let this be your LMS machine.
Then get another machine entirely and install Windows-10, linux, or
whatever, until you get it setup like you want. Then decide if you want
to transition to the new machine, or just keep running LMS on your old
one.

Re: [slim] Deezer at 99p for 3 months?

2018-11-14 Thread freelsjd

I have subscribed to both and there are things I like about both. When
spotify stopped their direct support for LMS, I switched to Deezer just
to try it out. The main thing I noticed about Deezer is that the
download mode from server to phone works much faster. Their servers
must be set up faster or less loaded. However, after Michael's spotty
plugin for LMS has matured for the better, I have now switched back to
spotify. Also, I like the fact that Spotify offers a direct Linux app
whereas Deezer does not which requires the web player. Deezer, however,
does continue to provide the LMS plugin. So, for now, I am sticking
with Spotify and I have had my Deezer fix for the moment.

2018-07-14 Thread freelsjd

Partly answering my own question, I researched the new service a little
bit. I have not actually tried it, and there is a free month trial.
But, from what others have said, the bit rate tops at 128K which seems
very low for a $9.99/mo fee. That combined with new direct LMS service
will eliminate me as a potential customer.

Re: [slim] Which Streaming Music Service works best for You and your system?

2018-07-12 Thread freelsjd

The main thing that I like about deezer, apart from the fact that it
works well with LMS, is that the download speeds are very good; at least
to me. There is a noticeable difference in downloading the local copy
of an album to my phone, for example. Really much faster. I don't know
why. Deezer also seems to improve their service to my liking. About
the only thing that I dislike about Deezer that I had in Spotify is that
Spotify had the ability to create folders within playlists. So, for
example, I can setup a playlist in Spotify as a genre of music, say
acoustic-rock. Then I can go into that folder and setup different
playlists. Deezer has only flat playlists.

Re: [slim] Latest Plex updates Music features

I tried using plex for everything (movies, home-movies, photos, music).
I have been a LMS user for many years and still have my squeezebox.
Eventually, I dropped the music server from plex, and went back to LMS
for the music server. The plex server is much to slow. It cannot
handle a large music library nearly as well as LMS. Plex has a nice
interface, and works well for the non-music applications, but it could
be faster and more efficient; even for LANs at home.

Re: [slim] does anyone still use squeezelite anymore instead of chromecast audio and if so why?

2016-09-19 Thread freelsjd

I have tried plex media server, and decided to just use it for photos,
movies, home movies, TV shows, but not the audio collection. For the
audio collection, I am retaining my LMS. It seems that plex is very
slow for larger collections by comparison to LMS. Also, the LMS is much
more configurable to play at different rates and also adapt to remote
players direct to my server instead of through the plex server in the
cloud. If plex could get a more efficient DB manager going, it could
probably beat out the LMS.

You can still cast by using a squeeze player on the android phone and
cast it to the chrome cast. I have both a roku and CC. roku and it's
remote seem to have more apps than the CC, but most of it is junk. There
are some very unique apps on the roku that are very interesting for the
individual taste (for example, old TV shows, movies, etc.).

Logitech missed the boat when they did not expand the LMS to include
movies, photos, TV shows, etc. The LMS is still hands down the best
audio server I have seen; and combined with the squeezebox, it was one
heck of a system. Too bad.

Plex is pretty awesome with the Roku. I have pitched in for the
lifetime membership and I am 61.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2016-08-07 Thread freelsjd

Hello Stefan !

I recently installed your Squeezeplayer product on my Google Nexus 5X
phone. This phone does not come with an sdcard, which may be import to
solve this problem ?

I also am using the Squeezer player. My logitechmediaplayer server is
running 7.9 on my debian linux jessie server which is up-to-date and
running ssh server

I have followed your 5-part usage recommendation, including the 5th
part, which describes the ssh-tunnel setup. To get this working, I also
installed you squeezetunnel package (outside the google play library,
but installs and works well).

All this is working great over wifi or cellular. Thank you so much for
a great product !

Now to my only problem. I run my ssh server to only accept ssh keys,
and not allow ssh password authentication. Reason ? It says right in
the sshd_config file:

# Change to yes to enable tunnelled clear text passwords
#PasswordAuthentication no
PasswordAuthentication yes

I commented out my usual "no" line, and set to "yes", and then the
squeezetunnel package works as expected.

I checked your comments and found your recommendation to use
/sdcard/sshtunnel/key or perhaps /sdcard/squeezetunnel/key. I do not
have this in my phone.

Any other recommendations ? Do you have a way to set up an ssh key in
squeezetunnel ?

Re: [slim] Beats Music to replace MOG..Where does that leave Squeezebox?

2014-01-29 Thread freelsjd

I used to use spotify before switching over to MOG. It is really a
shame to have lost MOG. I really did like it; especially on my
squeezebox. Losing MOG is only 2nd to losing squeezebox; squeezebox
being a slow death due to Logitech buying them out. I have been a loyal
purchaser of Logitech mice, but that may change in the future due to the
slaughter of squeezebox. Logitech just sucks right now to me.

I have tried out Beats and it really is a BM. Force feed my playlists,
make it really hard to find stuff. It is just tacky. They are going o
have to really improve before I send money that way.

The one good thing that has come out of this is a research of what is
out there. I discovered pono (http://www.mypono.com/) which is expected
out soon. This appears to be much smarter; not the least of which is I
really like Neil Young. Maybe we can get pono to make themselves
available on the squeezebox.

Meanwhile, I will also probably swtich back to spotify since it is now
going to be the best thing on the squeezebox.

keep on the squeezebox ...
