Logitech could rule this world if only they would made an effort on

Go for Touch now, this is a good pick. Every new SB annoucement get

Re: [slim] What would make it easier to recommend a Squeezebox ?

2011-07-23 Thread your momo

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88939

Question: What would make it easier to recommend a Squeezebox ?

- Simplified installation and initial configuration
- Simplified usage after initial installation/configuration
- Integrated support for ripping music from CD and tagging it
- Support for more online streaming services
- Improved stability of mysqeueezebox.com
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in Squeezebox Server/Firmware
- New Squeezebox hardware which have reliable support for local music
  without a computer
- New Squeezebox hardware with built-in speakers and stereo support
- New Squeezebox hardware with support for video
- New entry level Squeezebox hardware with a lower price

Streaming FLAC music w/o a running computer was the enabler deciding me
to go for SB line. However I have to admit that this was not easy going
in the late 2006 as NAS based solutions where either over expensive or
under powered …or both.
I can barely recommend normal people to try this way.

In the mean time Logitech released SBTouch, which is per spec capable
of acting as a server, unfortunately the HW choice driven first by cost
makes it being under powered to do this job reliably. FW/SW also makes
out of the box experience being very confusing for a none techie guy.

So I vote for having such an SB that reliably and seamlessly support
local music (USB or LAN) streaming w/o a computer …BTW it should also
being able to tune on web radio avoiding the need of mySqueezebox.com
mess that just confuse everybody that is not SB customer since the
early 2000.

Such a product can be easy recommended and will allows my friend
staying my friend after their purchase ;-)

Would the creation of an account solve the point ...I doubt since the

Rather impressed by the performance browsing into a 600 cd collection

[slim] Moved back on SS6.5.1 and XP ...where is SS6.5.4?

2008-03-16 Thread your momo

Was forced to resum on SS6.5.1 and XP as my NAS DS107+ solution is not
able to work reliably.
Mid December 07, I update my server from SS6.5.1 on XP to SS6.5.4 on
DS107+ running SSODS. Installation works easy and performance was close
to perfection during about 6 weeks.
Then sometimes DS was not able to start or was freezing during playback
...each time I was forced to cut the main power. I try re-installing
same SS and SSOD, but it only works fine on that day. Next power up the
same mess was back with never ending start and freeze...

So I move all my music back on an external USB HDD and I was looking
for to get SS6.5.4 for XP to download, but no way to find it on Slim
Devices site, I can only have SC7.0...

As I'm really not ready to risk the move to SC yet, I jump back on the
SS6.5.1 copy I keep on my HDD. It works fine but my Transporter
downgarde FW from 31 to 27 and my product is now back from Logitech to
Slim Devices...
I don't dropped yet the idea to be Windows free, but I will use my PC
based setup for listening until the bug on DS station is understood
...it may takes time.
On the other end I would appreciate if somebody can tell me where to
find SS6.5.4 for Windows ?

Question: How do you control the Slimserver?

- Stock Handheld Remote
- 3rd Party Remote (Harmony, Nokia, PDA, c)
- Web Interface
- 3rd Party Computer Interface (Moose, JRMC, c)

I use standard remote 99% of time, it's quick and efficient, I mostly
browse by folder and play full albums and all this is working fine.

Sometimes, I use my Palm LifeDrive (WiFi) to access the Web interface
but only for show off effect as it's vague and fuzzy ...not all
functions are working well.
Up to now, I doesn't understand the real potential of Web interface,
except rescan function all the rest is useless to me, it's just to
complexe to play with, i.e. I don't catch the play list stuff, so I
don't use it.

As I'm not running my PC/server 24/7, I first need to boot and launch
SS6.5 prior powering the SB3, which is always cut from the power line
while not in use.
I would by fare prefer having some server functions like rescan,
server launch and shut down available by direct access from the
remote to avoid to be in front of the PC to do this.

[slim] Re: SlimLite + NAS on board

2006-12-08 Thread your momo

I'm back, I follow your hints and install SlimServer 6.5 on a 4 years
old Laptop (PIII,1GHz, 512MB, XPproSP2) it went nice …ok it tooks me
slightly more than 10min, but after one hour I was able to play music
(MP3 192kB files) from the server Laptop on a 2nd Laptop using
SoftSqueeze. I was proud of that, it works also while 2nd Laptop was
connected by WiFi.

This motivate me for more, so I install and configure EAC + AccurateRip
+ FLAC.exe following the installation guide in the Wiki. I also manage
this to work even it tooks me about 5 hours effort until I got my first
ever .FLAC file. I was also able to stream those new files using
SoftSqueeze, but obviously could not differentiate them from MP3 due to
the bad Laptop embeded speakers sound quality.

I had the oportunity to borrow a SqueezBox3 for this w-e and bring it
to work …user interface is straight forward.
This evening I was listening FLAC on my HiFi system since about 3
hours, audio quality was really good (SB3 - optical out – HT (preamp)
-Power amp). Now I could feel the power and superiority of FLAC against
MP3 (same file back to back). I was very excited of all the tests and
comparisons I plan to do this w-e until …the music suddenly stop.
The raison is the die of the server Laptop HDD, luckly I have a copy of
all the music I've ripped, but this is the end of my SB3 test…

Now you maybe better understand why having a stand alone mode would
have allow me to listen SB3 streamed music (direct out from my backup
HDD) while I reinstall a new HDD + all the apps in my Laptop …instead
of that, my CD player will do the job.

This first experience convince me on two things:
- FLAC quality is really good and can/will replace all my CD
- Slim products need a stand alone mode to become a real CD player
alternative

[slim] SlimLite + NAS on board

2006-11-27 Thread your momo

As already told here
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29897 my biggest
concern with Transporter is the lack of a stand alone mode.
As music lover and audio enthusiastic I'm interested to find a solution
to get free of all my CDs and enter in the music streaming age.
The fact SlimDevices products act like pure server clients, and need a
running SlimServer to be able to navigate and play streamed music, is
very frustrating.
It prevent them to be a CD player direct replacement, especially from
an usability point of view.

Therefore I'm proposing to implement a minimal stand-alone mode on
board.
I'm targeting especially on Transporter as it offer enough inner space
for that, his higher price point also allows more freedom.

My proposal is following:
- Build a reduced SlimServer version which focus on the essential and
permit to navigate and play music located on an external HDD.
To be efficient this SlimLite should be shrink to the maximum and like
a SafeMode guarantee this device be able to play music at any time.
- To host this SlimLite a NAS Main board (custom or commercial) should
be added in the Transporter.
Power supply can be external, it just need a separate NAS input plug,
in order to not disturb Transporter's well designed supply.
- Data connecting should be made through Ethernet connector as like
this NAS would be external.
HDD storage connector should be added, it can be Ethernet
(Networkdrive) or USB2 ...or both if there is no limitation.

I know this proposal could sound strange for the one who find current
SlimDevices products easy to install and had no concern on their
usage.
On the other hand I really think this solution would be a serious
improvement for users who simply want to listen streamed music...

2006-11-27 Thread your momo

I think I was not clear enough, the goal is to fit the NAS Board inside
Transporter's body not to build a 2nd full box.
HDD must not be located close to Transporter it can be a network drive
hooked behind several meter of LAN cable...

About customer unfilled attempt, Slim's claim on Transporter:
Transporter's sound quality surpasses even the most exotic compact
disc players. Its no-compromise design minimizes jitter and distortion,
so you can enjoy the best your digital music collection has to offer.

Before be able to beat most exotic CD players, Transporter first needs
to be able to start playing music ...I mean always like a $30.- CD
player.
I agree my above statement is not really fair but sometimes I'm loosing
control :-}
